During 2025, the SMITE series has undergone significant changes, including a brand new title, major cutbacks at the developers, and a paused competitive scene. Here is the current state of things.
SMITE was originally released by Hi-Rez Studios in 2014, and Smite 2 launched as an open beta earlier in 2025, with a temporarily limited count of gods but the ambition to become the new main title in the franchise. Alongside this soft launch, Hi-Rez also announced that SMITE 1 will remain playable, but will no longer be the primary focus.
Throughout the year, Hi-Rez has taken steps to ensure long-term sustainability through major staff reductions and restructures in the organisation. In February, the company announced that they would no longer develop any major updates for SMITE 1, as well as for titles such as Paladins and Rogue Company, shifting all main resources toward SMITE 2. In June, another round of layoffs hit senior management positions, with the explanation that the organization needed to be aligned with its current priorities.
These cutbacks have resulted in there being no planned tournaments for SMITE 1, as the developer no longer provides the organizational or financial support required to maintain a full esports league for the game. For loyal fans, this has naturally come as a disappointment, but Paf.es offers several other esports titles to follow on their betting platform under the esports section.
The plan moving forward is for SMITE 2 to be the main project, with focus on future content and new gods. SMITE 1 remains in a maintenance mode with minimal support, but still fully playable.
Even though SMITE 1 now only receives maintenance updates, SMITE 2 has been much more active during 2025. In early November, the Open Beta 22 – Keeper of the Wild Update was released, following the Open Beta 21 – Goddess of Magic Update in October. Earlier in the year, several other beta versions such as OB20 and OB19 were also released. Alongside these updates, major patches introduced additional balance changes, including adjustments to maximum health and defensive stats.
A release date for the finished version has not yet been announced, but the free version continues to be updated regularly, giving players system improvements to ensure the game feels fresh.
If you choose to engage in esports betting, it is important to do so responsibly. Paf actively promotes responsible gaming and offers several tools to help you stay in control of both time and spending, such as limit-setting and self-exclusion options. Betting on esports should always be a safe and enjoyable experience.
Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat. And, instead of clicking a map, you use WASD to move, dodge, and fight your way through the detailed graphics of SMITE's battlegrounds.
