~Introduction~

Welcome to my guide for Ymir, Father of Frost Giants

My name is Prism. I am a Veteran and a Guide Writer on SmiteFire, who loves playing smite, mainly in the jungle, solo and support roles !

This is my eleventh smitefire guide, so I hope you enjoy it !

This guide uses BBCoding from BBCoding masters like Zilby, xZeroStrike, and FemFatalis, already wanting to thank them for their kindness and their friendship.

Nevertheless, lets move on to the Blizzard Itself, Ymir!

~Pros/Cons~

Pros

  • Ok Early Game
  • Highest Base Health of THE GAME
  • Amazing CC
  • Amazing Presence
  • Some Damage
  • Killer Ultimate, no joke !
  • Can easily turn the tides of a teamfight
  • Ice Wall

Cons
  • Horrible Movement Speed
  • Unreliable Ultimate
  • Phantom counters Ice Wall

~Skills~

ABILITIES

Ymir's abilities are very powerful in the CC element, but are fairly difficult to land for players with low framerate or lag issue. His CC is increased due to him being able to conjure an Ice Wall out of thin air and block enemy passage.

FROSTBITE
Frostbite is a vary straightforward passive. It increases your basic attack magical power by 100% for 4 seconds while enemies were just hit by your abilities, and making them deal 10% less damage to every source for that duration.

This ability can not be leveled, and is active at all times.

ICE WALL

#1
Ice Wall is a powerful ice thin wall that can be used in many ways, lasting for (2/3/4/5/6 seconds) and counts as a structure, not allowing players or minions to move through it. This is a Ground Target ability

This ability should be leveled third, after Glacial Strike and before Shards of Ice

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Disrupt Enemy Team Escape/Chase Potential.
- Help your team get a kill or two by blocking away an exit.
- Use to Escape, help a teammate escape, or block away an ability.

GLACIAL STRIKE

#2
Glacial Strike is a hard hitting damage ability. It slows enemies in the area (35%), and will fire after a short period of time, dealing damage ((90/160/230/300/370 (+70% of your Magical Power)). This ability is a Line ability.

This ability should be leveled second, after Frost Breath and before Ice Wall.

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Deal reasonable damage to enemies.
- Clear minion waves easily, instantly even.
- CC'ing an enemy, easing up his death.

FROST BREATH

#3
Frost Breath is an ability that doesn't deal a lot of damage ((50/90/130/170/210 (+50% of your Magical Power)), but instead provides other benefits. Whenever this ability is used, it stuns the opponent ((1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 seconds)) inside your cone. This ability is considered a Cone ability.

This ability should be leveled first

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Stunning your enemy.
- Help Your Team Escape.

SHARDS OF ICE

#4
Shards of Ice certainly deserves its name. It has insane burst damage (500/650/800/950/1100 (150% of your magical power)), and it slow enemies inside of it. On top of that, it also makes you CC immune]. This is considered an Area ability.

You should put 1 point in Shards of Ice at level 5. From there, it should be leveled last.

Use this ability in the following circumstances:
- Deal insane burst damage together with CC.
- Become CC immune and avoid high amounts of CC.
- Force Enemies to Relocate

If you're interested to have a visual presentation of these abilities, here are the ability videos.

Another definetly interesting video to watch is Inuki's Tools of the Trade episode focusing on Ymir's Ice Wall

~Items~

ITEMS

Ymir's Items were chosen for a support that needs to be more tanky than mobile, based on his already bad movement speed and lack of movement abilities.
Shoes of Focus
Shoes of Focus is the first core item. It gives +40 Magical power, +250 Mana, +10% Cooldown Reduction and +18% Movement speed. These boots make your attacks more powerful. They also give some mana and cooldown reduction, allowing you to spam your abilities faster, and do more abilities by the amount of mana. You'll also be able to move faster, which gives you the possibility to keep up with your enemies easier.

Bulwark of Hope

~Gameplay Tips~

GAMEPLAY TIPS

Ymir's Gameplay alters from game to game, more so than other gods, therefore, I decided to do more of a "General Direction" instead of "Exactly like this" Gameplay section.

TIP 1
Ymir is all about making sure the opposing team is placed exactly where they don't want to be. Try to use Glacial Strike after you've done your Frost Breath on someone and then auto-attack them - you will hit harder because of Frostbite

CC into CC

TIP 2
Ymir is ALL about mind games. Muscle your way into the center of a team fight and stun as many people as you can. Put your Glacial Strike down on a support or a squishy mage to scare them off. It won't kill them and everyone knows that, but it will freak them out and force them to move in the heat of a team fight.

Focus Squishy, stun people and split the enemy team

TIP 3
The ult is the kicker though. You're not supposed to hit anyone with that ult. If you do, that's great, bonus points. But the ult is made to split a team into fragments so they can be picked off. No one wants to get caught in it, and everyone knows that they have the EXACT amount of time to get out of it before it goes off, but only if they pick a direction and start moving immediately. So people will often pick the shortest line out of the circle. Isolate people from their group, make their escape impossible, and push their team backwards to watch helplessly as they're murdered. THAT'S what Ymir's ult is for.

Use your ult effectively, as a support, not a damage dealer

~Matchups~

Machups in the solo lane is the key to survival. Understand them, you'll win, underestimate them, you'll loose.
(long list warning)

Ares
Ares is a aggresive god. Your best measure againts him is being more aggresive than him. make sure to freeze him so he can't chain his Shackles, use your Glacial Strike to slow him, your Ice Wall to stop him, and your ult to counter his..

Ares is an EASY god to counter
Athena
Athena is a "hybrid" god, for a lack of better word. She can be both Aggresive and Passive, without loosing her potential. Best thing you can do againts her is blocking her dash, using Frost Breath followed by Glacial Strike when she taunts you, and make sure she dies a lot. If you don't do it, you will get severrly out-classed by her in many ways..

Athena is a HARD god to counter
Bacchus
Bacchus is an aggresive god, meaning his potential comes mostly from the damage he deals from his Burp and mainly Intoxicate. Best strategy is to possibly avoid taking damage from him, using Frost Breat while he is channeling Burp, and try to outdamge him. He is not an easy counter, since he can Belly Flop over your Ice Wall.

Bacchus is a HARD god to counter
Fafnir
Fafnir is a "hybrid" god, just like Athena. He can be both Aggresive and Passive, but looses some of his purpose if played passively, but it's also pretty darn good. Even if he can jump over your Ice Wall your imidiate damage is higher than his, although, when he enter dragon form, you must make sure you do everything to make your team get away from him, cuz he will be more devastating than Miley Cirus on her Wrecking Ball video.

Fafnir is a POSSIBLE god to counter
Geb
Geb is a Passive god, meaning he is best played on the defensive, but can still hold his own on offensive positions. While he does counter your CC with his Stone Shield, you do WAY MORE damage than him, so just make sure there are multiple gods with low health that, the one that is shielded is ignored while the others are slaughtered, and you're good to go.

Geb is an EASY god to counter
Khepri
Khepri is a "hybrid" god. Hhe can be both Aggresive and Passive, without loosing his potential. The beast way to deal with a Khepri is trying always to bait his ult, and make sure he dies as often as possible, and even, if possible, bait his Abduct. It's not easy, but it's easier than many other gods.

Khepri is a POSSIBLE god to counter
Kumbhakarna
Kumbhakarna is an aggresive god, and his own fat will destroy you if you're not careful enough. Be careful with his damage output, being able to out-damage you if you play dumbb. However, if you play smart and / or casually, you will be able to out-class him in almost all categories.

Kumbhakarna is a POSSIBLE god to counter
Sobek
Sobek is an aggresive god, but nowhere near as good as you. Be careful with his bait, and you'll easily block his utility and damage output using well timed Ice Walls and Frost Breaths.

Sobek is an EASY god to counter
Sylvanus
Sylvanus is a passive god, and your damage output just destroys him. Focus him that he will be completely useless. There isn't really anything else to say....

Sylvanus is an EASY god to counter
Terra
Terra is an aggresive god, being able to outclass you in many ways, but, if she gets behind you, you will just destroy her dreams. The best way to counter her is to kill her early on, or not allow her to dash away. Her kit is really powerful, but, when behind, it's nowhere near as useful.

Terra is a POSSIBLE god to counter
Xing Tian
Xing Tian is an aggresive god, but in his current state, you're just plain out better than him. You can easily counter his ult with Ice Wall, not allowing him to throw your team in bad spots, Frost Breath stops most of his aggresiveness, and yeah...

Xing Tian is an EASY god to counter

~Conclusion~

Hope you enjoyed my guide for Ymir, Father of Frost Giants

Pris, now that the contest is over, commenting a bit more (and giving some thumbs up on the guides).

Firstly, good job overall on the guide. I know you don't like "gameplay" sections, but think it's a good addition for any guide.

Your core is solid. For your alternative items outside of core, would like to see some other situational counter items listed...like anti-ADC and other things, if you think they're functional.

I personally like sort of alternating levels between Glacial Strike and Frost Breath. Yes, as Support, it's nice to lock down enemies for a longer time, but Strike offers so much damage, that it can really help soften enemies to secure kills...and it's great to clear camps more quickly when you're rotating.

If you can mention a bit of something for situations where you might choose Mark of the Vanguard as the starter, that would also be good.

Finally, in your section on BoV/Bulwark, maybe putting only the Bulwark symbol on the left and BoV on the right would be better...right now it looks like Bulwark is discussed on the top half, and BoV on the bottom, which is confusing.

Anyway, good job on the guide, and would love to see you maintain it.

The contest has now officially begun.

Until this point, I was kinda comfortable, just updating my guide now and then, thinking "I've got this contest in the bag." And then...BAM!

Prism, may the best Ymir guide win. I might have to step up my game because of you.

@Pris, this looks very nice. I knew it was going to look nice, due to your experience making guides, so I'm not so surprised. That said, I do want to let you know that the dark blue you use in various sections hurts my eyes. Might just be because I'm old.

I'd also say that the Ice Wall is both a pro AND a con =P At least when I use him, hahaha...ugh.

The ability videos are a nice touch, but I'd also say that making some quick looping gifs and putting them in their respective ability boxes (as a spoiler) would be better...lumping them all together as YouTube videos feels a bit out of place.

Also, as you already know, my ability leveling preference is different than yours. Won't hold that against you, as long as you provide sound reasoning (won't say if you do or you don't).

Never saw that Inuki vid before...any of his vids, actually...pretty entertaining.

Your items section is extremely unique. I like it just because it's different and it draws the eyes, but the organization and alignment is a bit weird here and there (e.g. Bulwark/BoV section).

Look forward to reading your gameplay tips and matchups. Solid start. Also good funny chapter, though as you comment, it's definitely not something that we would judge. Maybe that's a good thing for you =P
