Introduction

Hello to all the lovely people on SmiteFire. Stuke here again for another guide. In this guide, you'll learn how to play not just the face of the game but also a master of weaponry, a pure harbinger of violence, and a true trooper, Bellona.
Note: you don't have to follow this guide to the smallest detail. These are suggestions on how to play Bellona. I encourage you to see the comment section below and other tips.

Who is Bellona?

Bellona is a Physical Melee Warrior who utilizes her Swiss Army Knife of a kit to control opponents and provide effects to her attacks depending on which weapon. Being a true frontliner, Bellona wants to charge in, take out weaker targets, and be a big distraction for the enemy team.

Pros / Cons

Pros
  • High Damage
  • High Utility
  • High CC
Cons
  • Hard Time with Ranged Targets
  • Countered by Ability-Based Gods
  • Weapon Forms only last as long as you're in Combat

Bellona is a pure bruiser who utilizes her kit and controls the fight in her favor. Utilizing control and enhanced basic attacks to pressure the enemy, Bellona becomes a highly aggressive force to go again any lane opponent.
Bellona's most prominent problems are getting close to and staying close. As well as the issues Bellona has when she's the one getting CCed. Hard CC or effects hamper her movement and leave Bellona struggling to escape or chase down a target.

Abilities

Master of War
You gain a stack of protection and movement speed every time you hit an opponent or get hit by an enemy god's attack. In theory, you could build full power and still be tanky enough compared to the enemy jungler.
This passive gives Bellona most of her speed outside her first and ultimate ability. Build up this passive before chasing a target to shorten the gap as much as possible.

Shield Bash
A short distance dash once reaching the end, or when you hit an enemy, any enemy god caught in the cone is slowed, and you gain a stack of Blocks for the number of enemy gods hit.
This Weapon Mode gives Bellona a Shield and Longsword that, when you get three successful basic attacks, adds a Block stack with a max of three. An excellent weapon form to use when boxing as you'll not be taking so much damage in a close-quarters fight.

Bludgeon
The ability you want to use for lane clear and dealing high damage. You spin a 360 and slam your hammer on the ground, but there's more. If you hit a target with the spin, the slam will do more damage, increasing for each enemy god caught in the slam.
This Weapon Mode gives Bellona a large Warhammer that provides her Auto-Attacks AoE damage (like Osiris). The AoE effect, the ability that provides your basic attacks, gives Bellona significant lane-clearing power.

Scourge
The ability you want to use for control and sustain. A long-range attack deals damage, but if this ability hits any enemy god, they become disarmed for a duration. An excellent tool for making AA Based gods nearly useless.
This Weapon Mode gives her a Scourge that gives her additional range on her melee attack. Still, every three successful basic attacks give her a percentage of healing as this is something she needs to stay in a fight.

Eagle's Rally
This, ultimate, is what gives her that significant teamfight presence. Bellona leaps through the air and stuns anyone within your landing radius. She is a great initiator of escapes; this is a massive part of her engagements or when you need to stun the enemy for a follow-up. Once you've landed, you place a War Flag in the location that provides AoE protection and damage for you and your allies.
Best to use the ability at the beginning of a teamfight to provide you and your allies that significant power and defense boost which can sway a fight in your team's favor.

Tips, Tricks, & Combos

  • Warmonger
She has an excellent kit for it, so make sure you build her with that ability to fight, as she will be in the thick of things.
  • Swiss-Army God
Being in the proper weapon mode will depend on how you fight. Sword and Shield will make you more resistant, War Hammer makes your in-hands AOE deal more damage to multiple targets, and Scourge will give you more sustained healing every third hit.
  • Fight-or-Flight
If the enemy manages to fight back, use your passive, 1, or ult to get away before things go wrong. Use this boost to keep fighting or to run away.

1
🠞
This combo will be the most commonly used in your arsenal. Charge at your target with Shield Bash but make sure you hit the enemy god since you want to apply the slow. A stack of Block after active Bludgeon while the target is slowed, and make sure to get the two hits on the target. If you want to use Scourge to disarm and provide yourself some sustain while you keep fighting.
Ultimate Combo
🠞 🠞 🠞
Bell's abilities can be combined however you like since she can. This combo is how you maximize her damage output and have the tankiness to stay in the fight. Start the fight with Eagle's Rally to jump in the middle of a fight and stun valued targets. Once you land, use Bludgeon while the targets can't move and get both hits off. After that, use Scourge to disarm would-be threats or enemies that rely on auto-attacks for damage, then Shield Bash to build up stacks of Block to keep fighting while taking reduced damage.

Stages of the Game

Early Game

You'll most likely be in Lane or Jungle farming up, but if the opportunity comes, use Bludgeon to harass the enemy until they die, as Bell has tremendous damage in that stage.

Middle Game

This stage is lackluster for Bell as the enemy will be building up their defense, but if you managed to snowball in the Early Game, it would be a breeze.

Late Game

All that damage Bell lost in the Middle Game makes its return, while also building up your defenses will make you a front-line force throughout this portion of the game. As usual, gank the lanes, secure objectives, and win the game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Bellona is great for beginners for her significant damage, defense, and utility. Bellona is easy to get into if you're relatively new to Solo lane or even warriors. Use her high aggression to rush the enemies and take out weaker targets no matter how many enemies throw themselves to stop you. Utilize your vast arsenal of abilities for their effects and the different Weapon Modes. And finally, make your presence known as the Goddess of War.

Kinda surprised I dont see the Shifters Shield on here. I think it's a staple item for bellona in Conquest cause you can imitate with Rally from the jungle with high power and then once the counterattack starts you get alot of protections. maybe I'm missing something.

Void Shield is usually a better choice unless someone on your team already has it. Gives prot reduction to both you and teammates.

what about the item "Pridwen"? Is it viable? Seems good in Protection and one uses the ult often, no?

Especially, since Bellona is not as straight tanky as some of the other tank types, I don't feel that it will be as viable as it will be for some. In limited testing I have done with it on her I feel like to really benefit from it she will definitely need to be built full tank any time you want to place it in her build to feel like you are not squandering it's potential.

Kriega1 (143) | August 7, 2019 5:56am
Please look when the build was last updated.

Yes Pridwen is viable. It's pretty much core even on many gods.

CafPow | August 7, 2019 6:24am
sure. But i had the impression that stuke still updates every now and then, when i followed here. Besides: i really have NO idea when which Item came out since i play this Game for a few weeks.

i don't get the hate. Is she so overpowered?
There are a ton of other Gods worse imo. But well .. really helpful guide, thanks.

I made this guide in 2016, around the time of Season 2, and during that time Bellona was THE most overpowered god in the game. Like having her on your team with someone who can play her competently was like a win condition. I had that mentality in mind when this was being written so I decided to pretend I love her, when at the time I despised her, and then have the eventual snap at the end of the guide. The joke might not work anymore but I really don't feel like changing it. Other than that, thanks for reading my guide.

CafPow | August 4, 2019 7:48am
the guide is super helpful AND funny to read too. :)
i just asked myself if she's still that OP. Cause she sure is strong and has a tool for every situation, but that's the fun i think ^^

What Kriega said. She definitely has her weaknesses and can get blown up just like a lot of other gods. She is more flexible, yes, but in being that way she is not as good as other gods in some of the specific roles. She is kind of a swiss army knife character that is a hybrid, but not really in the sense that some of the other characters in the game are. Her stances kind of put her in that category, but she doesn't gain completely new skill sets like true hybrids.

I am more curious as to what hate you are talking about though. I guess it was from the the guide not being updated for awhile causing problems as to how effective the build(s) would work at the current time the comments were made. Pretty much the only 'hate' I could see was maybe from back in January or so probably before it was updated for season 6.

It looks like a solid build, aside from like most, I prefer Ninja Tabi on her as well. I don't really play conquest but it falls in line with what Bran and Gulf were talking about a warrior needed to do in solo with the flexibility to replace Berserker's Shield and add a sturdier defensive item, a more offensive option or a hybrid item depending on need on a match by match basis.

Why do you level Shield Bash so late? Wouldn't the block stacks be really helpful early game in Solo?

How come you list frostbound as a jungle option but not for solo?

Also you listed brawlers twice for solo. Maybe swap one of them out and add Toxic Blade considering Bellona is AA-based.

Wouldn't it make more sense to go Ninja Tabi for Solo lane and Warrior Tabi for Jungle? Also no blink for jungle?
1
Gulfwulf (81) | April 4, 2019 6:55am
That's what I'd do. I think the lack of Blink Rune is an oversight.
1
Kriega1 (143) | January 24, 2019 7:37pm
In place of frostbound should be your lane opponent defence item.

Also for jungle get Warrior Tabi not Ninja Tabi.

Gulfwulf (81) | January 24, 2019 2:42pm
Isn't Berserker's Shield a bridge item that should be sold for something else late game?

Yes. Read Stuke's notes in the build list.

In all seriousness is a good Bellona build? Or is it a troll?

Not really a lot of health in the build. I would swap Masamune for Urchin. Also Beserkers gets sold lategame (e.g. for Void Shield). Add sprint as another relic option. Also not really many situational options (no midgardian etc...) and I have no idea why u would build Soul Eater on Bellona.

I would list Frostbound over Blackthorn for Bellona. For the jungle build add ancile as a situational/alternative.

Lastly, don't build titans bane on bellona jungle. (titans bane on bellona???)

I would never call this a troll build. It's defensive, as most Warrior Solo builds should be. If this was a full offensive build, then yes, that might be troll. We really need to reign in these "troll" statements.

As it is, it's as Kriega has said...outdated. Not suggested for current play, and I also agree it's important to either list multiple builds or at least talk about various item options.
1
Kriega1 (143) | November 10, 2018 9:13am
It's very outdated. Look at the date it was last updated, it doesen't even have Berserker's Shield , and Ninja Tabi is better on Bellona than Warrior Tabi. And I also have massive problems with listing only 1 build for a solo laner, when many variety in builds is needed for different scenarios.
1
UPLAR (9) | November 10, 2018 9:23am
Fair enough cheers Kriega

DrinksAdmirer (1) | May 20, 2018 5:56am
Isn't this too much of a defensive build for her?
3
Branmuffin17 (394) | May 20, 2018 11:14am
Bellona, like any other Warrior Solo-laner, is just fine building full tank. She DOES have good damage in her abilities, and really nice basic attack function especially from Bludgeon, so you can definitely consider hybrid items that have some offensive function.

On the general hybrid side, you can consider items such as Masamune, Shifter's Shield, and Gladiator's Shield (the latter of which is listed in Stuke's build). You could also consider Mystical Mail in that group.

On the focus on basic attacks, you can consider Frostbound Hammer (slows on basics) and Shogun's Kusari (group attack speed).

But it's generally not recommended to go with things like Jotunn's Wrath or other full offense items, unless you're just messing around or stomping the enemy.
1
Gulfwulf (81) | May 20, 2018 2:05pm
What Bran said. Generally warriors in the solo lane want to go with items that have a mix of power and protection, along with some CDR. Your job is to clear your lane and try to prevent your opponent from being able to do so. The power is to help do that while the protections are to help prevent your opponent and/or the enemy jungler from preventing you from doing that. You don't need aura items like a support because you're not there to support the team, but you do need to be able to both dish out and take damage. Otherwise you'll be a non-factor in the match. It's better to go 3-0-x than 12-11-x.

Stuke, your starter costs 1350 gold. Where’s the other 150? Is it supposed to be Round Shield instead of Shoes?
1
Branmuffin17 (394) | May 13, 2018 9:30pm
I'm not Stuke (but I'm buds with the bleach drinker), so I'll answer for him, and he can agree or contradict me to his shriveled heart's content.

His starter is a base example. Seems like he prefers to rush Tabi, so Boots is the starter over Round Shield. He only shows 3 potions, and yes, it adds up to 1,350 gold. At your own preference, you can get up to 3 more potions of your choice...BUT...if you can get away with it, starting with 150 gold gets you that much closer to completing Ninja Tabi.

If against a physical solo, his build progression goes into Gladiator's Shield next. This is a good item in this situation to provide some health sustain, since he didn't start with something like Chalice of Healing, and Scourge just doesn't heal enough to really count (and you don't want to use that on the wave, as it'll drastically slow your wave clear compared to Bludgeon).
