The Build

[*] Starter - Death's Toll is your go-to starter item because not only do you have a cleave auto attack in your chain, but your getting an extra proc from your dog on every hit. This combined with the chalice and healing potions will give you more than enough sustain. Obviously go Bumba's Mask if you are jungling. Lately, I really like buying a Swift Wing instead of teleport. It gets you back to lane before losing too much experience and it also frees up a relic slot to help your team out. For my relics i usually go Magic Shell and Heavenly Wings.

[*] Ninja Tabi - This item is the basis for the build. This build takes advantage of Erlang's dog and how it procs on-hit effects. The more attack speed you have, the more you can proc these effects. The mana and physical power a also helpful.

[*] Ichaival/Silverbranch Bow - These are two of the most powerful bridge items in the game. The attack speed is huge, but the passive is bigger. It creates a huge swing in power in your favor when you're boxing. Go Ichaival if you're against physical and Silverbranch if you're against magical. (Added Bonus: it only takes 2 autos to reach max stacks because your dog procs it).

[*] Frostbound Hammer - Another great boxing item. This combined with the passive Hastened Katana effect from your mink makes you impossible to get away from without a dash or a leap. The health also makes you A LOT tankier.

[*] Stone Cutting Sword - INSANE power spike. Similar passive to Ichaival, but it steals protections instead of power.(Added Bonus: it only takes 2 autos to reach max stacks because your dog procs it).

[*] Soul Eater - Erlang benefits from every stat this item gives, but much like the other items in this build, you get it for the passive. Only sell Death's Toll for this item if you can finish ALL of Soul Eater. At this point in the game, you will be healing for too much for someone to kill you. You and your dog both proc it, so you heal for 4% of your max health every time you hit a god.

[*] Qin's Sais - With all the attack speed that you've gotten, you'll be able to proc this item's passive very often. Your dog doesn't help too much with this because his proc is only 15% of the damage yours does, but it's still extra damage. Sell Swift Wing for this if you bought it.

[*] The Executioner - Sell Ichaival/Silverbranch for this. This combined with Stone Cutting Sword give you more than enough penetration to kill any tank. At this point it should go without saying, but it only takes 2 autos to reach max stacks because your dog procs it.

Hi BallSacramento,

I notice that you used the bbcode for bullet points...at the beginning, you'll need to add "list" in single brackets. Then your [*] will show as true bullet points.
  • Having a cleave basic attack is not a specific reason to get Death's Toll in and of itself. It's specifically important because he is a basic attack god. Note that cleaves got partially nerfed for Death Toll...it used to proc the same value on all enemies hit with a cleave attack, but now only provides 1/2 that on consecutive enemies.

  • I believe that Qin's Sais should be absolutely core on him. Your write-up says that it's good to get because of all the attack speed you've built...but the big point is...his first 3 basic attacks have a shorter progression and lower damage.

    https://smite.gamepedia.com/Erlang_Shen

    Progression is:
    • Damage: 0.65/0.65/0.65/1/.8x
    • .75/0.75/0.75/1.1/.9x Speed; 4th attack hits all enemies in the melee area.
Those very quick 0.65 hits mean that he attacks very quickly with those, and it makes Qin's Sais all the more effective. It's part of the basis for how you would employ attack canceling in a combo...hit 3 times, use an ability, hit 3 times...etc.

  • Erlang might be the only god where Soul Eater is at all viable, but even then, there are probably better items for him to get. Granted, it does give him a lot of sustain.

  • Stone of Gaia is likely no longer a decent situational pick. With Patch 4.15, the passive has changed, and I just don't think it's worth it in any mode not named Assault.
Anyway, the rest of your build and build progression look pretty good to me, though I think my normal build would probably include at least one true protection item...to me, Frostbound Hammer and Stone Cutting Sword just don't seem like they'd provide enough survivability. This is, of course, my opinion, and I'm not an ES player.

Not an erlang sheng main either, but your points make sense. What would you think about replacing Frostbound Hammer with a protection item since 72 Transformations ES (Mink) gives him a fatalis effect? On top of that Stone Cutting Sword gives him a bonus +10% movement speed, which can help with chasing.

GGF can confirm or add his own input on what he builds, since he plays Erlang a decent amount.

In a case where you want to rely on that Fatalis effect from 72 and NOT get Frostbound Hammer, I would probably suggest building a counter item in this same 2nd item position, at least when playing Conquest Solo-Lane...this is how most do it, I think.
  • Gladiator's Shield: even though it got nerfed, it's still a good item. Earlier, he'll be relying on his abilities a good amount, as his basics won't be strong enough yet. Works also because it's a bridge, so you can replace late-game with more protections of a higher level, or look to enhance your basic attacks at the point where they're powerful.

  • Breastplate of Valor: Yes, just like Gladiator's, this screams ability-based, but it's still a good early item.

  • Hide of the Urchin: If facing a magical god (or in any mode where you just want good balanced protections), this is probably a great overall pickup. Magical protections against magical gods, physical protections against physical jungler, minions and objectives, and a nice pool of health and mana.
GGF, any more early protection suggestions?
