Introduction

About Me

Hello fellow Smite players, and welcome to my first guide on Bastet: Goddess of Cats. I was a jungler main in LoL before I picked up Smite and absolutely fell in love with it's high skill and risk mechanics, and when I first came to this game, I immediately looked at the jungle gods. Fenrir and Bastet were the ones that caught my eye first, and I eventually settled on her. (It wasn't because of her chest, I promise. >w>) Since then, I've become Legendary with her, and sport an average K:D of 8:1. In this guide, I will teach you how to play Bastet, the fundamental mechanics of jungling, when to gank with her, when to prioritize farming, how to build her, and how to keep your map presence up so high that the enemy team will be afraid to come out from under their towers if you're MIA.

Why Should you Jungle with Bastet?

Bastet is one of the most underrated and rarely played gods in the game. You don't see her much, in ranked or casuals, and she is rarely (if ever) streamed. So if so many people consider her to be low tier, then why bother playing her? Because of how rarely she's seen, many, many players don't know how to counter her, or what to do when Bastet is attacking them. Many players never figure out that if she has her return Pounce buff, she's immune to CC, many players don't realize a huge amount of her damage comes from DoT's, and surprisingly, many don't even know she can return Pounce back to her original location, making her a low risk ganker. Many players will be unable to react in time when they're suddenly suffering from an onslaught of slows, DoT's, and cats. Those who decide to turn around and fight will find themselves attacking thin air as you nonchalantly Pounce back into the jungle to come around for another pass.

In Conclusion, or TL;DR

Bastet's remodel is coming out soon, which will probably make her become popular, not to mention give her a real autoattack which will be a massive buff for her. I thought I'd write this guide beforehand so people can pick up some helpful tips and master her before everyone else starts playing her, and because she is an amazing, and highly under-rated god.

Note: If you're familiar with jungling, and familiar with Bastet, and just wanted a build, then skip straight to "The Build: What and When to Build It" section. A lot of this guide assumes the player is completely new to Bastet, and mildly new to jungling.

Bastet Breakdown

Pros Versus Cons

Pros
Amazing escapist, amazing chaser. Very few counters, and even fewer people that know how. No other assassin is better at taking out back line gods in the middle of a teamfight, and surviving it. Able to solo the fire giant in less then 30 seconds. Healthy assortment of self speed buffs and enemy slows. Never really need to buy Beads if you're smart with Pounce, save for an enemy Ares (His No Escape seems to be able to yank you out of the air even mid Pounce, which I find kind of BS).
Cons
Extremely squishy. Extremely low damage output unless you go full high risk, which speaks for itself. Terrible early game, almost completely unable to gank until level 5. Requires you to snowball/have a low death count, or you will reach the endgame much later then everyone else. Ares and Nemesis (Two very common Gods) Directly counter Bastet. Weak to medium clear times, depends on Hand of the Gods for buff camps.

Passive

Open WoundOpen Wound
Every time Bastet lands an ability, it applies an Open Wound, increasing the damage of her next ability by 20%. ALWAYS try to time it so that your Razor Claws get the boosted 20%, IE initiate with your Pounce, use Razor Claws after you land, if the Pounce doesn't hit/deal damage, hit with a Nine Tails, then use Razor Claws.

Abilities

Pounce
Your initiator, and the ability that makes Bastet shine the most. Pounce allows you to leap towards an enemy (or away) hitting them for damage and applying an Open Wound, and for a few seconds afterword you get a buff. While this buff is active, you have a boosted movement speed, and if you activate the Pounce skill again before the buff vanishes, you will immediately Pounce back to where you started, from anywhere on the map, regardless of any form of CC, silence, or cripple (however, knock up can and will stop you), and make you immune to such effects while flying through the air.
Razor ClawsRazor Claws
A very amazing damaging ability, and the one you prioritize above everything but your Cat Call when it comes to leveling. This ability applies a damage over time bleed effect, hitting massive amounts of damage per tick for a few seconds afterword. This will land you many kills, even when you least expect it. It's extremely nice to Razor Claws a fleeing enemy just before they run under their tower, and laugh as you get the kill while running back to yours. ALWAYS try to land this ability after applying an Open Wound with one of Bastet's other abilities.
Nine TailsNine Tails
Bastet's most underrated ability, but one you should learn to use. Nine Tails hits a decent amount of damage, applies an Open Wound, and causes slow. It's a skillshot, with a nice amount of range. I've sniped people out from under towers with this before, and it's an amazing chaser. Someone skilled can even whip around and Nine Tails an enemy that is chasing them and continue running without slowing down at all. This is a skillshot, with a slight delay, so it's mildly difficult to land for some, but get good with it, because it is an important skill.
Cat CallCat Call
Here it is, the ultimate, Bastet's Coup De Grace, the ability that enemies know and fear no matter how rarely they see Bastet. Bastet summons a trio of cats who will charge at the nearest bleeding god, or if there are no bleeding gods present, the nearest enemy (including minions!), and immediately begin to AA them. So make sure you land a Razor Claws before you hit this skill, or it's a wasted ultimate. These AA's hit hard in the early game, but start to become lackluster as the game progresses. The great thing about them though is that you can use the cats to box gods in, and because each of their autoattacks slow down the god it hits. Use your cats to score kills in the early game. After that, save them for only two situations: When you think an enemy will get away if you don't use them, or to keep a god off your back while you flee.

Bastet's Role

Bastet's role is really dependent on how far along the game has progressed, it changes constantly and unfortunately a lot of your teammates probably won't understand what you're trying to do or can do as Bastet, but that you should know.

Early Game

Farm, farm, farm, cover a lane, farm, and farm. During the early game, Bastet's only gankability comes from her Cat Call, at level 5. Albeit, in certain situations smart use of her Razor Claws and Nine Tails abilities without her ultimate can land kills as well if you work together with your lane.

Basically, until you hit level 5, the only thing you should be doing is farming, prioritizing the mid harpy camps, getting buffs for your lane teammates (keep the speed buff for yourself), and covering a lane when teammates have to back. Don't try ganking before then unless you get a golden opportunity thrusted into your face. Once at 5, gank pretty much every time your Cat Call comes off of cooldown, as well as when the opportunity presents itself to land a kill. If you're confident, you can rush to the aid of fleeing teammates by using your Nine Tails ability to slow down the chaser.

Mid Game

Kitten is almost all grown up now, you can now reliably gank and kill squishy or low health characters. Always prioritize the mid harpy camps, but when an enemy pushes to your tower and their health is lower then 50%, or they're a mage/ADC with low phys prot, then go for the gank. Most of your damage output will come from Razor claws at this point.

End Game

You've finished 80% of your build and are level 18+, you are a snowball turned into a wrecking ball now. Your goal is to roam around the map, protecting teammates and AA'ing down enemies that go out by themselves. If you max your build, you are fully capable of solo'ing the fire giant with just auto attacks assuming your team keeps the enemy team occupied.

Teamfight Presence

This is Bastet's biggest flaw, her only failing. She is terrible in a team fight unless you build bruiser--and then her damage becomes abysmal. Bastet can't commit to a large scale fight without quickly getting destroyed, so only join in teamfights when Pounce is cooled down, and get out before you lose your return Pounce buff. Your job during teamfights is to:

1. Pounce past the enemy guardian and take out a mage or hunter hanging out in the back. At the very least you can send them home, but I have quite easily taken out ADC's and Mages who built no physical protection items with just autoattacks alone in the two seconds before the return Pounce buff wears off.

2. Harassment- Pounce into the middle of the team, DoT everyone up with your Razor Claws, then Pounce back to safety. If your team is lucky, the enemy team will have blown a lot of their cooldowns/cc's at the Bastet landing in the middle of them, distracting them for your team to burst in as you flee away to go find some minions to AA for lifesteal heal.

The Build: What and When to Build It

If you're familiar with jungling and with Bastet's playstyle, and just came here for the build, then this is the section I recommend you read. If it's your first time running a high risk build, I also highly recommend reading the next section, "Starting Out", as Bastet's early game is abysmal, and doing poorly can cause you to lag behind your teammates, or worse, the enemy.

What to Buy at the Game Start

Bastet requires a vastly different starting loadout then other Jungles, due to her weak clear time, and the zero benefit she gets from Bumba's Mask. That's right, Bumba's Mask is a NO-GO for Bastet. You will never get back as much health as you lost to clear that camp, leading you to have to recall due to low health anyway long before you run out of mana.
Death's Toll
This is why I recommend Death's Toll. The +15 power is actually a drastic and noticeable increase in clear times in the early game, and combined with the faster clear and the +5 health every time you AA, you actually return more health then you would from Bumba's Mask.
Hand of the Gods Rank Two
The second item you should get is Hand of the Gods rank 2. Why rank 2? It cools down 30 seconds faster, and that means you can use it more often to clear buff camps. Unfortunately Bastet relies heavily on Hand of the Gods for clearing these camps, not to mention Hand of the Gods is great for Pouncing into the middle harpy camps and stealing the kills right out from under the enemy jungler or mid, then Pouncing back out.
Consumables
The consumables are really up to you, but my recommendation is a Healing Potion and a Mana Potion. You will need the Healing Potion to clear all of the camps before your first recall, the Mana Potion is just a "just in case" you need mana to go gank a lane while you're in the middle of farming. If you so desire, you can scrap the Mana Potion to grab a Ward instead, and ward the middle harpy camps or something.

Getting Your Priorities Straight

(1).Heartseeker
The first item I recommend rushing is Heartseeker, the core of this high risk build. For every creep you kill with a maxxed Heartseeker, you gain a stack. For every god killed, you get two stacks. Every stack, to a maximum of 50, gives you +1 power, not to mention the inherit 8% move speed and 25 power from the item itself. This is what starts you on the snowball, and every camp you clear will make the next one that much faster. Note, if you die, you lose half of all your current stacks, hence high risk.
(2).Devourer's Gauntlet
Another snowball item, and the second one you should prioritize. Luckily though, you keep these stacks regardless of death, though this item will make you that much harder to kill. Devourer's Gauntlet gives you a stack per creep kill, and 5 stacks per god kill, to a maximum of 60. Each stack gives you +.25% physical lifesteal, with the base item itself giving you +30 power, and +10% lifesteal. A lot of Bastet's survivability in the endgame depends on having max devourer stacks.
(3).Warrior Tabi
This is the obvious one, in fact most people rush their boots first, but I prefer to depend on Bastet's slows, self speed buff, and the jungle speed buff to catch or flee, so it isn't a priority until you've started building stacks. Ironically, the most benefit you're getting from this is the +10 armor penetration rather then the speed, as you won't be doing a lot of long distance running with Bastet except to clear camps. Nevertheless, it's good to have when fleeing from gods like Thanatos or Nemesis.

From this point on, the build order is really your choice, and paying attention to what the enemy is building, IE if the enemy team is building high offense or defense, is what you should do from this point, but here is what I generally prioritize except under extreme conditions. (Ex. Some weird anti meta 5 tank god team or something.)
(4).DeathBringer
This item is just so awesome, it's hard to not get it on any physical god, it adds so much damage. A whopping 50 power from the completed item as well as a 20% crit chance, AND 50% more crit damage. With max Heartseeker stacks, and a max Deathbringer, Bastet can autoattack for up to 800 damage on low protection gods. And all the while they're taking 300 damage ticks from her bleed. Yikes!
Note, if it's your preference, the next item could be built before this one. You have several choices here, and it's mildly dependent on your preference of play, and the way the enemy team is building.
Asi
If the enemy is building lots of +damage items and not getting any protections, save for their one tank, then they're probably depending on lifesteal and burst. This is why I like Asi. A massive boost to Bastet's survability because of the attack speed and +lifesteal, allowing her to win a 1v1 against just about any god. Asi boasts bonuses of 15% lifesteal, 30% attack speed, 15 armor penetration, and whenever your health drops below 35%, you get a bonus 25% lifesteal for 5 seconds, allowing you to burst your health back up in a pinch.
Titan's Bane
If the enemy team is building lots of physical protection, or they have a large amount of tanky gods ( Sun Wukong, Chaac, and Tyr specifically, who will wall a Bastet.) Then in those item's place, you can build a Titan's Bane. Titan's Bane gives you 30 power, and boosts your physical penetration by 33%, so build a Jotunn's Wrath or Asi after this to further increase that number and crack those shells.
Rage
And finally, Rage. Build this to compliment your Deathbringer, and make those crits extremely common. Your single target damage will be unmatched by any god, and with that little bonus to attack speed, you get a decent survivability boost as well. I've actually taken to building this over Asi as of late, EXCEPT against a tanky team, where I stick to Titan's Bane + Asi.

(6).Jotunn's Wrath
Note: If it's your preference, you can build this as item number 5, or if you build Titan's Bane, build Asi instead of this.
A lot of people consider Jotunn's Wrath to be a must have for Bastet, since shorter cooldowns on Pounce means she can leap into teamfights more often and help more. I honestly don't think it's that amazing and didn't actually start building it until Focused Voidblade was removed from the game. With few other armor penetration alternatives though, and with a lot of Bastet's utility dependent on her cooldowns, it's become a good, staple item for her, but I generally only get this item if the enemy team isn't building tanky. Jotunn's Wrath gives you +40 physical power, +150 mana, +11 armor penetration, and reduces all of your cooldowns by 25%. The power and armor pen is actually a nice addition, not to mention the 25% cooldown reduction. You won't really feel that +150 mana in the endgame, unless you choose to rush this item after Warrior Tabi, in which case the mana bonus is a nice boost.

I was just reading through this again, and I realised: You should make a build without Heartseeker, since some people (like me) like to have a safer build.

Right, um, this review is going to be fairly long, so I'll divide it up into segments. This one is about the build/item explanations.

Okay, firstly, Death's Toll does work. You do get a boost to early clear and get a good amount of health. But the problem is, you WILL run out of mana often, and that will make it more difficult to gank and clear.

Secondly, Hand of the Gods rank 2 is generally a bad idea. Why? Let me paint a scenario: You use it on your first buff camps. Then you leave the solo lane, before returning to the mid camps. You use it again on the mid camps, before recalling. My point is, in the segment of time between the first jungle buff you take and the second set of mid camps, there is simply not enough situations where an earlier Hand of the Gods would be useful. You'll just be wasting gold for an extra 30 seconds you won't need.

Thirdly, you forget the alternative of Bumba's Mask, Hand of the Gods, and potion of physical might. You no longer have mana problems, you gain more health this way (because you aren't forced to basic attack a camp, which isn't always possible), and you gain 20 extra power over 15, which is very useful when you see Bastet's 100% scalings on all three of her primary abilities.

Seriously, Bumba's Mask just works better. Bastet uses her abilities to clear and your early build favors power over attack speed, so you won't even get much chances to use Death's Toll's passive. I get the benefits of DT, I just don't see anything that outweighs the downsides.

So basically, I think you should not get HoG 2, and get a power pot. The starting item is more of personal preference, anyway.

Now, for the actual items.

This could be just me, but I hate getting Heartseeker on junglers. Not only because junglers can die pretty easily, not only because this assumes you'll be snowballing, but because getting stacks as a jungler is stupidly difficult, and unlike something like devourer's gloves, dying is a really big setback. But again, this part is more of personal preference.

I have no issues with Warrior Tabi and Devourer's Gauntlet, although I'd personally buy Boots somewhere down the line.

But the Deathbringer is a really odd choice. If you're building crits, you should get Malice or Rage; if you're building power, there are other things that would be better, like penetration or cooldown reduction, especially Hydra's Lament, which would be insane with the double power stacking items you built. To put it simply, 20% crit chance is just too unreliable for me to use, even if a crit would deal massive damage.

Math for DB vs HL

Asi is an odd choice, especially when you already have a lot of lifesteal. I mean, I see why it could be a useful item, it just seems odd when you're building a lot of power and already have lifesteal. (Not to mention how basic attacks don't work so well with Bastet, considering her 100% power scaling on all of her basic abilities.)

Golden Bow is just bad. Seriously, it is bad. Don't get it, it is NOTHING like Ravenous Hydra. Nothing.

I have no objections to Titan's Bane or Rage. Or Jotunn's Wrath.

As for the skill build, you give an odd skill order and don't explain why. Seriously, why are you stacking them like that?

Overall, the build and items section were alright, but I still dislike some parts of the build, especially the starting items and Deathbringer.

I totally agree with Jordenito, now I am faaar from an expert jungler or even kinda good, but since I play Bastet kind of a lot I thought I'd share my opinions:

I also feel like you should go with Bumba's Mask, since it can keep me in the jungle for a lot longer. I rarely go base because I have low health, it's almost always because of mana problems.

Also, I think your early game segment is absolutely not true, if you play well, you can get a lot of kills early game, even before you reach level 5.

Also, I would like to see a counter-jungling section, it's kind of the only part I'm missing :)

Jesus F the messed up item icons are confusing...

Anyhow, let's get to the review.

I'm not a Bastet expert, but I'm pretty sure I know her general play style.

I myself, like mentioned before by other people, think that Bumba's Mask is better than Death's Toll, especially on Bastet, seeing as she isn't as auto-attack based as someone like Kali. But, if you say you've tested it, I can't argue, though I still think Bumba's is better. Moving on.

Like I've mentioned, Bastet isn't a very auto-attack based god, unlike Baka, but she isn't 90% ability reliant, unlike Thor. She is somewhere in between, tending towards more ability-reliant. About 60% abilities & 40% AA (late game speaking, early game she is more about abilities). I don't think that building Asi is right on her, and even more if you build devourer's gloves. Asi mainly provides lots of attack speed and lifesteal, but you already get enough lifesteal from Devo Gloves and the attack speed isn't so good when you don't build other on-hit effects items, IMO.

Personally, I don't like Heartseeker and devourer's gloves in the same build. They take too long to stack, especially for a jungler (and while yes, you can go to a lane and "borrow" some minions, I still don't think getting these two items in the same build is viable). Also, you don't need much lifesteal on her since she doesn't auto attack that much. But some is still useful.

I do think that Jotunn's Wrath needs more credit. CDR on Bastet is essential, and in the early game much more than in the late game. It should be your 2nd-4th item.

As for Deathbringer... I'm not a fan of it. I'd rather see an item like Qin's Sais, which IMO is one of the best items you canget on Bastet since her abilities do a lot of damage so the passive on this item works wonderfully. Getting a bruiser/defensive item instead of Deathbringer and/or Rage is a good choice.

And no, I don't think that if you don't build her full glass cannon she won't do any damage. 1-2 defensive/bruiser items (like eye of retaliation, Void Shield, magi's blessing or Hide of the Urchin are good choices on her.

Moreover, I don't think you should start with tier 2 Hand of the Gods. In your build/entire guide, you did not mention potion of physical might, and while you might not like this 'risky' choice, it's certainly a wise pick if you can manage not dying in the early game. And for a goddess with a long-range skill-shot slow and a jump (and what jump.. Pounce] is so safe and useful), you will rarely die early game with her. Getting Bumba's/DT, tier 1 HoG & the red potion of manhood is a standard start for any jungler and a very good one. Especially on Bastet. If you don't like getting this item, at least mention it and say it's a viable start, as it'll yield more effectiveness if you done right.

BTW, Golden Bow is a bad item in general, and even more for Bastet.

I believe there's a place for some situational items, such as Void Shield, Runic Shield etc. Also, you did not mention Actives.

I will say this though, you do a good job explaining the item picks.

As for the skills.
The skill order start off great. You'd want to max razor claws ASAP. And you do it perfectly. But, afterwards, you should max Pounce. nine tails should be maxed last. Pounce simply scales better. nine tails should always be maxed last. Of course, a point into your ult whenever possible - which you did fine.

Also, the skill combo, and how you explain how to use your passive its best, is perfect.

Your skill explanation is great. Really nothing else to say, you explain how to use them very well.

It seems that you know how to play Bastet. The gameplay section is good. But I'll have to disagree with you about this;
Her early game is very, very potent. Sure, she isn't as strong as someone like Arachne or Thanatos, but her early game beats pretty much any other standard jungler aside from those two. Forget the early game of Kali or anything like that, which is plain terrible. You beat Hun Batz, Bakasura, Fenrir etc. Bastet's early game is very good. And once she gets those cats, it's even better, but her early game is far from being bad. You can gank with her even before level 5 and yield victories.
Other than that, nothing else to say. You really do know how to play her and in team fights as well.

For a first guide, and even in general, for a guide, the BBCoding is nice. It's neat and quite clean.

All in all, I can't vote for this guide. It seems like it could be a very good one, and we lack good Bastet guides. But, it's unfinished, the build could use some changes... But this guide can be very good. I won't vote for now. I'll for you to finish this guide so I could check it again and vote. P.M me when you've finished it.

I hope my review helped.
