Introduction

My name is Matheusfirmi and i play smite on PC. I'm a Brazilian guy who likes to play Moba, FPS and RPG games. This is my most (and probably only one) rated in-depth guide here on SMITEFire. My Smite IGN is "ManoSabao", feel free to add me there.

In this guide I will show you how amazing it is to play with Ao Kuang.

First of all, A MIGHTY SWORD! In second, let me introduce you one of the best junglers in the game. As you know, Kuang is a mage type character with an assassin gameplay, he works well with any crowd control god and can burst your foes in a blink of their eyes.

The Ao Kuang gameplay is not that complicated as you thought, his 2nd ability Dragon Call can easily take down an enemy god in 3 or 4 dragons and combined with the effect of Telkhines Ring you can do even damage in a few seconds.
If your foes are trying to run, chase and annihilate then with your 3rd ability Wild Storm or with your 4th ability King of the Eastern Seas.*
If you got in a trouble and need to quit quickly, you can use your 1st ability Water Illusion to run in the opposite way that you might go and recall.**

The earlier season was crucial to impact in early game and due to this Ao Kuang wasn't the best choice in the jungle but in this new season the meta has changed to the jungle and since xp camps respawn more often you'll need to farm even more to stay ahead of the enemy jungler and still gank to cause impact in the game.

* Use this ability wisely, if your target as Meditation Cloak, Aegis Amulet or Purification Beads, make sure to force then use in their dispair before eliminate them.
** The enemy gods will think you may go straight but you want to go behind them to recall or heal yourself in a camp.

Pros / Cons

Strenghts / Pros

Great Mid/Late game.
High burst damage.
Good Stealth.
Passive gives some self heal.
Good pick off potential.
Playmaker setup.
Agressive.
A Mighty Sword.

Weakness / Cons

Poor early game.
Eats a lot of mana in early's.
Easily stoped by crowd control.
Needs strategy and positioning to be relevant.
Reliant of Dragon Call.
A Mighty Storm.

Farm Meta? Okay, i'll take it! Let me show you the way, my brother.

Hey lads, here I'm to explain how Ao Kuang works in this new season, so prepare your popcorn, take a confortable seat and ease your mind i will, 'cause now is time to learn "how to play with The Dragon King of the Eastern Seas".

Season 6 came with a lot of changes in Ao Kuang due to his new passive, which is like the oldest one with the last one plus a new one. Confusing, isn't? Ok, lemme explain.

Season 7 came with a lot of changes in the Conquest scenario. Due to Ao's changes in the previous season, you cannot execute and stack your passive as well so, Ao Kuang need to farm more to get a great late game but he needs a composition that completes is lack of early game damage. Now, lemme explain how the Ao's Passive has changed over the time, will I?
  • His first passive holded up charges and every time he casted abilities it increases the damage and when he was out of mana, he used the charges of his passive to cast abilities but to charge the passive, he needed to stay out of fight.
  • After a rework on his passive, each time Ao Kuang successfully used his dragon form to execute an enemy god he gained a stack of +15 of Magical Power and 5% of Lifesteal. it stacks up to 3 times and stacks were permanent.
  • Now, in this new one, the passive merges the first and the second in a new way, 'cause now he gains a stack and every 20 seconds in a max of 3 stacks and with a stack available, his next non-ultimate ability that deals damage to an Enemy god has a reduced cooldown and heals himself. Successfully executing an enemy god with his ultimate fully charges his passive. Each cooldown reduction of 2s, 5% of heal based on max health.

This new Ao Kuang is based on doing the higher amount of damage in a short time and dont be exposed for a long time. There's no need to spending to much time on fights, try to pick off and gank. Before he was a tanky monster due to his lifesteal, but now that Dragon King's Sword is changed and Global Anti-Healing Aura was introduced in-game, you'll need to act as burst damage assassin. To be honest Ao Kuang suits well with Season 8 meta, in the earlier season he wasn't good enough but after reversing all nerfs on Wild Storm and Dragon Call the Dragon King is ready to cause darkness and terror over the arena of gods once again.

Now that Season 8 has finnaly come, the issues with Ao Kuang are finally solved. The xp camps respawn more often, so you can take advantage to farm up more to be relevant in late game. Just farm the more you can, try to gank frequently every one that has no beads and after building Ring of Hecate and Telkhines Ring you'll be powerful enough to face every threat in front of you.

I do still love Ao Kuang so much! So enjoy the new build i made for ya.

Items

THE CHOOSING OF MY ITEMS

Season 8 came to solve all the issues of Season 7, Ao Kuang was weak and hi-rez saw what they've done to our beloved dragon king. His damage is now good for early short trades and he can also farm a lot for lategame. The past season was Team Fight based and the early ganks were essential but now farming is the priority, dont be negligent with ganks but value your xp and yourself.

Start the game with the Manikin Scepter, Emerald Ring, Healing Potion x1 and the Hand of the Gods.

After returning fountain, finish your first Attack Speed item Ring of Hecate for the passive of steal of power on each successful AA which is good for early trades, take it with no questions.

As second item, make sure to have another Attack Speed and build Telkhines Ring it has Attack Speed, addictional damage at each AA which is good for keeping the early pressure.

As third item, Bancroft's Talon will be your saving throw. It gives you lifesteal to survivability in addition to massive power based on missing health.

As fourth item, keep the old and good Demonic Grip to toast your targets with 10% magical penetration at each AA with 3s and stacking upon 3 times. This helps a lot.

For the fifth item, a situational item may fit well. Anti-healing such as Toxic Blade or Divine Ruin might fit well, otherwise Typhon's Fang ought be bought for damage, lifesteal, 10% magical pen and its synergic passive.

To finish our composition of itens, replace Manikin Scepter and look the situation of the game to choose the best direction to go. If you need even more power and one of the strongest items in the Patch Rod of Tahuti is the answer but if you need to cut heal of course Divine Ruin is viable. Soul Reaver is also a good option if you feel that enemy tank gods are driving you nuts. Are you looking for destroy structures with efficiency? Polynomicon is the wae. This is really your choice, take whatever suits you.

Given that boots are out of the game now, what would you suggest building in boots' place? I've had some luck with polynomicon, but was wondering what you think would work better, if anything.

Kriega1 (143) | July 30, 2021 12:53am
Could try Eye, Tahuti, Magus, Telkhines, Demonic, Typhon's, Protector, or Eye, Coin, Hecate, Telkhines, Typhon's, Tahuti, Protector.

If you want Poly on Ao you'd get it mid to late, not rush it.

In your AA build you advocate building Rod of Tahuti as a boots replacement, but in most cases Typhon's Fang is better as it gives you more power, additional 10% penetration, almost double the effective lifesteal and costs 200 less while losing only "25% more power against targets with less than 50% health".
Here is the math behind it - first of all Typhon's Fang actually gives 80 power instead of the 70 it says (probably a bug), then when you build Bancroft's Talon and Ring of Hecate you have 27% lifesteal already + 15% from Typhon's Fang it adds up to 42% which means 84 power from Typhon's Fang's passive for a total of 80 + 84 = 164 power, when you add the passives from Bancroft's Talon and Ring of Hecate you cap the lifesteal at 65 recieving 130 power from Typhon's Fang's passive for a total of 80 + 130 = 210 power that's 50 more than Rod of Tahuti.
You are sitting at 42% lifesteal without passives, effectively 42*1.4 = 59% (40% more healing from lifesteal because of Typhon's Fang's passive) compared to 27% lifesteal without passives when building Rod of Tahuti
And reaching the cap of 65 at 5 Ring of Hecate stacks and only 3 Bancroft's Talon stacks (64 with only 2 Bancroft's Talon stacks) 65*1.4 means effectively 91% lifesteal and let's not forget the difference 10% penetration makes.

Matheusfirmi (3) | February 24, 2020 6:52pm
I'll refute your argument with one Kriega gave me once. The main problem with too much lifesteal is that antiheal can broke you as f**k.

I used to build Polynomicon with Bancroft's Talon so Kriega told me that Ao can be countered with 2 antiheal items.

Rod of Tahuti gives +160 to power spike and +30MP5, it's passive just complements the additional damage of you already have. If u'r looking for % pen, you should look for Soul Reaver for power or even Void Stone for defense + damage + life.
1
Raichev | February 28, 2020 10:39am
From your response it looks like you didn't even bother to read my comment. Even if they build antiheal you still get a lot more power than you would if you get Rod of Tahuti 160 from Rod vs [164-210] from Typhon's Fang. Just forget the lifesteal, you get more power and more pen for less gold, and you trade MP5 for raw Mana. The 25% additional Power againsts targets with less than 50% health is pretty much counterbalanced by the 10% pen. Just test this build and compare the numbers then you will see that it's obviously better to build Typhon's Fang if you have already built two other lifesteal items.
If you haven't got the two other lifesteal items then Rod of Tahuti is much better. Or if you are planning to replace your lifesteal items with sth else.

Isn't it redundant to raise Attack speed that much using three rings?
1
Matheusfirmi (3) | February 8, 2020 10:56pm
As Kriega said, it depends, Demonic and Telkhines are core Attack Speed for Ao. But i'm having a good experience with Hecate as well, even if the enemy team build antiheal. I just need to update the order of the itens and the description of all the guide, but i'll do it soon, just wait ;)

Kriega1 (143) | February 4, 2020 2:07am
Depends on the AA mage. On Chronos/Sol/Olorun, yes. On Ao / Freya, no (of those 2 being the only ones that may use Hecate Ring well).

Any tips for Joust?

Matheusfirmi (3) | February 8, 2020 11:02pm
I'm not a experienced dude with the Dragon King on Joust mode, even in this new map. I don't recommend to play with him on Joust, but i figure that you need to farm and gank for the sides as much as possible. Maybe Kriega have any tips?

Really good guide, I like it, thanks for sharing! I've played our beloved Kuang for a long time before quitting SMITE for good two years ago. I just came back and I wanted to try my edgy boy again, hoping for some quality time using my old AA builds everyone hated back in s2 and s3. Well, this is a dream come true for me, as I always disliked the skill builds and now AA looks like the go-to choice for the Dragon King. Messing around with new items I found Pen Boots + Demonic Grip + Telkhines + Polynomicon + Bancroft + Typhon's Fang to work impressively good, I'm just curious as why Typhon's Fang is never mentioned throughout each s6 guide. Is it useless compared to other items like Chronos/Tahuti?
2
Kriega1 (143) | November 22, 2019 6:32am
>"Polynomicon + Bancroft + Typhon's Fang "

Triple lifesteal? I guess no one in your games builds antiheal.

>"Typhon's Fang is never mentioned throughout each s6 guide."

It's expensive. Mainly only Anubis and Freya justify picking it up.

>"Is it useless compared to other items like Chronos/Tahuti?"

Chronos' isn't even a worthwhile pickup on Ao. If you want a little cdr get spear of deso which also has pen.

Could add Soul Gem as an option, saw Adapting and maybe some other pros using it over bancrofts.
1
Matheusfirmi (3) | March 1, 2019 8:53am
Soul Gem is an excellent option to change on Polynomicon but is all situational, when i need a little bit CDR i build it, but when i need the burst of Poly's (almost every match) i build Poly. There's only one situation i do not build it in any cost. When the enemy team build antiheal itens like second or third item. In my sincerity, if you want to change Soul Gem to Bancroft, is better to not build even lifesteal, bancroft is like an core item in the jungle for mages.

Hey man, it's nice to see another Ao Kuang main finally who actually gives solid advice. I've been playing Ao for the last 3 years now, and I have a ton of fun with him. With the new resurgence of Dragons Ao Kuang though, wouldn't it make alot of sense to add hastened ring to stick to the enemies more and get it off as well? I tend to run pen boots, hastened ring, then spear of the magi and Demonic grip, and end it off with either Chronos Pendant or Polynomicon. I think the huge attack and movement speed alongside penetration that gets your enemies close to taking true damage seems to do more for me than when I was focusing on ability damage now than before. It helps a lot especially when I'm facing more high defense enemies, and I've seen some fairly decent results at a high level group, albeit not ranked due to my lack of a group on ps4.

Kriega1 (143) | December 3, 2018 5:26am
Should be building Telkhines Ring on him.
1
midwayrhyme | December 13, 2018 10:37am
yes telkhines ring and demonic ring are definitely core items on ao kuang
1
Matheusfirmi (3) | November 29, 2018 4:03am
Is like a situational build. I'm comfortable with demonic grip and maybe another ring, like telkhiness, althoght when i'm fighting a Bakasura for exemple, when i need more atk speed than skills, then i would run for the 3 atk speed ring, pen boots and double lifesteal. When fighting a Thanatos i run cooldown boots, bancrofts, demonic grip, poly, ant-heal item and another item of my preference for the match.

Do not listen to Kriega1, he isn't thinking outside the box and is not like every time you just build the same things. Of course u have preferences like core itens, but every player have it's own way of playing and i know my skills. He sure does know his skills and of course u know yours too. Keep playing the way you feel better and you will always be happy playing like u do.
1
Kriega1 (143) | November 29, 2018 4:04am
Ok, state why you don't build poly sometimes and why sometimes you do?

Also your AA-build is lacking. Giving Hastened priority over Telkhines is very bad. Fine, you can build both, but choosing Telkhines over Hastened? No no no no. In it's current state Telkhines is a core item on Ao Kuang. It's reasons like this why I make other builds so you don't mislead players into nonsensical item choices.

Don’t build polynomicon on Ao Kuang. Hastened isn’t the best. Also not sure why you mention “Ranked” and “group” when Ranked Conquest is solo queue only.
1
midwayrhyme | November 20, 2018 9:00am
polynomicon is definitely a wasted item on ao kuanareg, wild storm doesn't proc it and neither does dragon call I would definitely go bancrofts or typhoons instead of wasting an item slot on poly.

quack911 | October 11, 2018 4:35am
You shouldn't be needing shamans ring on ao kaung, and even more importantly wheres the idea behind going bancrofts first item? it simply makes no sense, its much stronger to go into telekhines from the start, once you finish it you can take any fight in the game. Its very important to go into demons ring after this and then you can get bancrofts, follow this by ob shard and end with eather soul reaver or magis cloak.
1
Matheusfirmi (3) | October 12, 2018 2:07pm
Why would i need shamans? I just need ATTACK SPEED for the Dragon Call procs and a little of cooldown. Have u never saw bancroft of first item? NONSENSE? Look, you are not talking to a noob, u are talking to one of the best Ao Kuang mains in the world and the Top 1 duel ao kuang! i have prints to prove it! i know exactly what i'm doing. In first place, bancroft's passive is OP and i've been won 2v1 fights in mid lane with one stack of my passive and bancroft built, but second to u Telkhines Ring that costs 600 at level 1 vs Bancroft's Talon that costs 550 at level 1, further on give me a little sustain for start levels, is better to catch an higher cost item with no safety. Are u seeing what you are saying? THIS IS NONSENSE. It's better to build Demonic Grip than Telkhines Ring bro. Have u studied? Have u tried to see what item is better early and late game? Well i suppose not. My guide is top Rated and Ao Kuang's first. I have two builds and situational itens in my guide, not only one. If u are a pro, get out here if not, just try my builds and take in consideration situational itens.

Don't bother me anymore. Kisses, be good.

I don't think he was criticising your duel build.... (Though I would like to see proof and which platform).

Anyway, Bancrofts or Telkhines is a viable choice first. Though Telkhines will improve your rotation time and improve your early Dragon Call autos, while Bancrofts is more for sustain and possible but risky power spikes during an early fight.

Also lategame attack speed will be a bit less necessary for Dragon Call as you will be using the ranged part of it at that point anyway.
