My name is x MysTeRioN z, a majority Xbox Player but sometimes I play on PC too. I'm a Brazilian nice guy who likes to play FPS, Racing, Plataform and RPG games. I like to study and read when I'm not playing and I'm also studying to be a lawyer. My xbox gamertag is the same as here: x MysterioN z.

I'm here to bring you this quick guide to play with Thoth on mid lane. My objective here is to bring to you all you need to know and something else but not making a too long guide (such as my Cupid guide: Love, find your mark! ). I want to tell you everything you need to know about this birdman to play in mid and some extra stuff :v.

Thoth is a long-ranged mage that specializes in dealing high damage in short periods of time. Besides damage, Thoth also brings utility to the table. With his Glyph of Pain, towers take less time to destroy; especially as a group. Even individually, Thoth can arguably push faster than several other mages like Ra. However, he is no Sol. Evade and Punish is useful for setting up combos for allied gods while dashing into battle. Overall, Thoth's ability as a mid-laner is what kept at the top of tier lists for some time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  1. High burst/poke damage
  2. Decent Cooldowns on 1 and 3
  3. High range
  4. Build-in penetration
  5. Very good escape
  6. Combo-orientated kit
  7. Final Judgement one-shot squishy gods
  8. All abilities can go through walls
Cons
  1. Very Squishy
  2. Low health and protections
  3. No true hard CC or immunity
  4. Skills are easy to miss
  5. final judgment is a massive hit or miss gamble
  6. Dash has a long cooldown
  7. Bad early game
  8. Disrespectful laugh on almost any skin

Skills

Passive: Dead Reckoning

Thoth pens the names of his fallen opponents in his book, recording their weaknesses. After killing 30 Enemies, Thoth gains a stack of 3 Magical Penetration, and killing an Enemy God will complete the current stack. He unlocks a new stack every 4 levels, up to a maximum of 5 stacks at level 17.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Help with damage early on. This lets you delay any penetration items by a slot or so. Always try to get the last hit on minions to obtain stacks. Same concept if you're item stacking. Also, you can achieve almost always true damage at late-game on squishy gods with 2 flat pen items on the build.

Hieroglyphic Assault

Thoth conjures three Hieroglyphs around him, ignoring the Basic Attack Movement penalty. His next 3 Basic Attacks pass through Enemies and apply Ability Damage instead.

If these attacks pass through the Glyph of Pain, their range is increased by 30.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Thoth's main source of damage, wave clear and poke. When leaving the fountain, activate this but do not cast it (fire the basic attacks). This will save you mana. This won't expire until you fire all the shots, so you can carry it with you for as long as you like. Like all abilities, aim, and fire where you think your target will be. Pair this up with Glyph of Pain to clear waves and poke. Especially poke, you'll need the range. Now more than ever due to the recent buff, you will need to hit multiple times these shots to increase your damage up to an extra 40% on the last hit.

total damage

Evade and Punish

Thoth dashes in the direction he is currently traveling. After dashing, for 5s Thoth's next basic attack instead fires a magical projectile at the target which pierces through enemies and roots the first God hit and slows every other enemy hit.

If either the Dash or Attack passes through the Glyph of Pain, their respective range is increased by 30.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Can be used to escape or engage for combos. Do not engage in fights that you cannot win. This is especially useful when combined with a gank from your jungler. Evade and Punish is also useful for the opposite; to get out of a gank as long as you combine with Glyph of Pain. You may also dash right next to a wall just to get the magic project to fire it on the wave before fire your 1 as long as you know where the enemy JG is and you will not put yourself in trouble.

Glyph of Pain

From his book, Thoth conjures forth a Hieroglyph in front of him. Thoth's ability projectile passing through the glyph receive increased damage and a range increase of 30. This damage does not trigger Item effects (anymore).

Thoth and allies Basic Attack projectiles receive a lesser damage bonus, but no range increase.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Glyph of Pain is useful for amplifying Thoth's abilities. Commonly used in conjunction with Hieroglyphic Assault. This can also be used on final judgment to snipe from an even further distance. Glyph of Pain is also useful when escaping, as it increases the range of Evade and Punish's dash. Besides, this helps when pushing structures, especially with a team.

Final Judgement

Thoth conjures a large glyph from his book, and then inscribes three more at its corners. When all four have been summoned, he sends them forward damaging all Enemies in their path.
Thoth may activate this ability again to fire the ability early, doing a reduced amount of damage based on the number of glyphs currently summoned. Alternately he may cancel this ability for 30 mana.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Useful for sniping enemy gods, acting as a finisher. When fully charged after channeling, can potentially one-shot some gods below 70% health. However, you have to wait for it to charge and aim properly, which is actually quite difficult. This can also be used to engage, hitting multiple enemies. This makes it easier to finish them off. Also, final judgment can go through walls making it great for ganks. Keep in mind that all of Thoth's abilities can fire through walls and for every glyph he draws after the first, the damage of his ultimate his increased by 40 + 20%. One more thing: If you're trying to be stealthy, his incessant screeching will typically give you away. Remember that you DO NOT NEED TO WAIT for the ulti full charge. If the target is at low HP you may fire before the full charge. You also may hold it to the last second just to try to bait the enemy uses an Aegis Amulet for example, but it will cost 30 mana from you.

Skills Combos

Notes and Tactics

Used to poke, clear minion waves, and damage non-structures in general. final judgment can be used in place of Hieroglyphic Assault to finish off enemy gods at a distance.

Notes and Tactics

Use this when escaping, taking advantage of the range boost on the dash. Fire the AA boost through the glyph on whoever is chasing you.

Notes and Tactics

Use this to engage, focusing on a single enemy. Use your 1 before dashing. Remember you are wasting your escape, so be careful.

Notes and Tactics

Against a single god, use this to finish them off. However, this is fairly risky as a stun would interrupt the channeling process and allow the enemy god to take advantage of your proximity to them as Thoth works best from a distance behind the frontlines. Remember you are wasting your escape, so be careful.

Notes and Tactics

Your ultimate combo. There's no way a squishy target (someone without protections) escape alive if you hit all these skills. Remember that you are wasting your escape and you will probably have to predict enemies' movements to hit your ultimate in this combo.

How to play

Early Game

  • Activate the three charges on hieroglyphic asault as soon as you spawn in the fountain. Remember to do this every time you return to the fountain.
  • Head to the speed buff and use Hieroglyphic Assault on the camp through the left wall, but do not take the buff. As soon as you finish all your 3 shots move to the mid lane.
  • You are VERY WEAK and an easy target until level 3/4 and 5, SO AVOID FIGHT. I'm not kidding, Thoth's early game is pure trash so avoid unnecessary early fights.
  • Try to clear the wave as soon as possible, and try to don't take damage from the wave. If the enemy cleared his wave first, retreat to your tower.
  • High recommend you take the damage buff. If you see that there is a chance of the enemy take your buff, then do it even before your jungler comes. If this chance is not possible, wait for him.
  • In teamfights try to participate from some distance and run for your life using Evade and Punish if someone focuses you (combined with Glyph of Pain).
  • PUT WARDS ON THE MAP to avoid be Ganked!!
  • Poke your enemy as soon as possible (See the "poking combo" on Combos Section) and be careful doing it, he might call for help and put you in serious trouble.
  • FOCUS ON FARMING, you need to get big as soon as possible so every farm you see, do it if possible (camps or minions waves), especially the camps on the right and left side of mid lane.
  • Be careful to don't die. IF THE ENEMY GETS BIGGER THAN YOU, YOU WILL SUFFER SO MUCH.
  • Ask for help every time you need it, and don't do anything that can compromise yourself.
  • Remember that you have a low health pool and 0 defenses early game so "be smart"

Mid Game

  • Now you do decent damage, probably you are killing a minions wave without problems using 1 and 3.
  • Now it's time to become a little aggressive. Your damage scales very well now (mainly with the build I did). Time to shine.
  • REMEMBER THAT OBJECTIVES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN KILLS, so it's time to start do rotate, taking down towers (don't forget to use Glyph of Pain to increase your and teammates damage) and kill with your team jungle bosses such as gold fury and fire giant.
  • ALWAYS try to participate in teamfights now, 'cause your skills ARE VERY USEFUL to the team and do a VERY GOOD amount of damage.
  • Now it's a nice moment to start rotating to surprise enemies and UUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHH BOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!

Late Game

  • Time to group up.
  • Now you are stronger than ever so, time to keep shining.
  • Use wisely your skills now 'cause they are powerful and can change the games' destiny.
  • Stay with your team helping them and now, more than ever, participate in the team fights combining your skills with theirs.
  • Unfortunately, you are very squishy, so YOU DIE VERY FAST at late game, BUT, you can counter it by playing safe behind your teammates. So, as long as you don't try to be a front line and stay together with your team you will still be a killing machine.
  • As you should notice, a single cast of your 1 and your 3 + 2 or ulti is more than enough to take 3/4 or kill squishies targets.

Final Considerations

My final considerations are: UUUUUUGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Spoiler: Click to view

Kidding, Thoth can be a funny god to play with and brings a lot of satisfaction when you have a good match with him. Plus he has the most iconic ulti sound that makes everyone fear him just by listening to it ;)

Oh yes, I did answer your question, just combine Kriega + mine and it was answered. Plus all the builds were updated long time ago, they no longer works with Deso.

Kriega1 (143) | September 5, 2021 6:12am
None of the build's overcap on CDR with a red pot though? Also Deso isn't in any of the builds anymore.

What Kriega said. The only build listed at the time of this post has 30% CDR before using a power pot.
1
ShadeSwornHydra | July 12, 2021 8:40am
Would telekinetic ring be a good item? It buffs basic attacks and I’m pretty sure it stacks with his 1
1
xmysterionz (71) | July 12, 2021 1:03pm
It doesn't. When he fires his it's just replace the basic attack, not add damage to the basic attack. Thoth does not get any benefit from basic attack items simply because he just doesn't fire basics, he fires projectiles from his abilities that are similar in animation to the basics but they aren't for any gameplay/damage proposes.
1
Kriega1 (143) | July 12, 2021 8:49am
It doesen't stack with his 1. Thoth is not a AA mage in any way, the basic attack firing mechanic only has to do with the way he fires his 1, it has nothing to do with basic attack item effects.

I always frustrated with Thoth cuz his biggest asset (his monitor) also minimize his positioning and outmaneuver options imo or ım just bad with him. And ı think this guide will help me a lot.

And as a Ra fan, nope Ra is the better birdman by almost every category .Plus Thoth is just a servant of Ra. Sooo begone thoth :P :D

Great Guide nevertheless

i would add doomorb as an item option propably even add a t2 boots t1 doomorb build as well because it is the dominant build in the meta.
1
xmysterionz (71) | November 16, 2019 5:34am
Yeah I noticed some people were doing it but I share the same thought "doom orb is too expensive for its price and what he offers at early game. I frequently owned people with this start which never made me never interest for it but I may try and test it if you are saying it's the "meta".
1
xmysterionz (71) | November 18, 2019 4:50am
I tried it twice and I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE IT. I didn't see any difference on the movespeed and the early power is good but the item is very expensive. I got behind the enemy on both times. I will not add it for now, but I appreciate your feedback, thanks.

Doom Orb is decent, but I don't think it's as special as it's claimed to be.

That and it's still too expensive at 3k gold.

Will you add an E-Staff build? E.g cdr > Deso > estaff > obs shard > reaver > Shaman’s/divine. Sell boots for Myrddin/Soul Gem.
1
xmysterionz (71) | August 13, 2019 7:37pm
You won't believe but I was thinking exactly it today. I watched some matches and there was a thoth with e-staff as 3rd item doing insane amount of damage and I thought about create a build doing it XD

Just need to execute some tests.
1
Kriega1 (143) | August 14, 2019 2:59am
I think Moswal also built it in SPL. He went CDR > Divine > Chronos' > Estaff > Obs Shard > Reaver > sold CDR for Soul Gem. So basically full-on item proc effect build. https://youtu.be/ESkNa_GwuNM?t=7159

Saw Prettyprime building it on his stream as well.

Kriega1 (143) | July 23, 2019 4:36am
Please do not build three flat pen items on Thoth in your 2nd build. His passive Dead Reckoning already gives him flat pen (15 flat pen). The easiest solution is change Shoes of the Magi to Shoes of Focus. Which means you have 40/50% CDR before you sell blessing/shoes but again, im not the one that came up with this build that has no mp5/mana until your 4th item.

The best solution would be use this build (early rush of Divine to counter, e.g. Ra or mage healer): Shoes of Focus, Divine Ruin, Soul Reaver, Obsidian Shard/ Spear of Desolation (either order), Rod of Tahuti. Sell CDR boots lategame for Chronos' Pendant.

Also add Mantle of Discord as a defensive option.
1
xmysterionz (71) | July 23, 2019 6:30am
Isn't the flat pen overcaping just by 5? So that's not a giant problem
1
Kriega1 (143) | July 23, 2019 7:07am
It's 5 yes, but most squishy gods have like 48 magical base prots at level 20. You don't need to have 3 flat pen items when Thoth's passive exists, 2 flat pen items is over enough (deso and divine with 15 each, which is why I suggest getting CDR boots).

Also an alternative to what I listed earlier, go CDR boots, Divine, deso, reaver, obs shard, tahuti if you didn't like the build order I listed.

Look here: https://smiteprobuilds.com/Builds?p_filters_page=1&p_filters_search=&p_filters_god=2203&p_filters_pro=~&p_filters_opponent=~&p_filters_role=~&p_filters_league=~&p_filters_sort=~

You don't see more than 2 flat pen items picked up on him.
