Purchase Order

Starter Notes This is the typical starting purchase order for most mages. In Joust, it is recommended to skip the Mage's Blessing and acquire second tier boots immediately.

Core Notes Shoes of the Magi will establish an effective early game poke, and will help in adequate lane clearing. Book of Thoth will set you up with some measure of sustainability, allowing you to farm effectively and gain your stacks. Use this in coordination with potions and the Meditation relic to maximize efficiency. Spear of Desolation will smoothly bridge you into the mid-late game phase, as it is the first item to provide penetration along with over 100 magical power, allowing you to begin taking larger risks.

Build Item Shoes of the Magi Shoes of the Magi
Build Item Book of Thoth Book of Thoth
Build Item Spear of Desolation Spear of Desolation

OP TIME Notes Soul Reaver will act as the heavy hitter here. By the time this item is fully built, Book of Thoth should be nearing full stacks. The 300 mana from Soul Reaver will contribute nicely to the magical power conversion, along with the 130 magical power on its own. Obsidian Shard is simply a safe item that will secure your spot as the dominant mage, scaling its passive to be one step ahead of the enemy at all times. Rod of Tahuti is the finishing item that will either reinforce your dominance further, or turn the game around significantly had it not been in your favor originally.

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my new and improved build/guide. The main focus for this guide will be on He Bo. He Bo is one of the most powerful Gods in this game due to the amount of damage he is capable of outputting. This build that I have created focuses on maximizing that damage, and the efficiency at which it can be used. Every item in this build has been carefully tested multiple times to ensure the best possible outcome, and various calculations have been done with special consideration to factors such as gold per minute, item price, and item stats, all in accordance to game stage and level upon time of purchase. I hope you enjoy, and maybe learn something. :)

Build stats

Build One: Pure Power (preferred build)

Stats

-711 base magical damage (capable of 1276)
-25 flat penetration
-1740 health
-2718 mana
-58 MP5
-10% cooldown reduction

-ALL DAMAGING ABILITIES CAPABLE OF OVER 1100 DAMAGE (before protections)

Build 2: All Around (Coming soon)

Skills

Steady Flow
Description: Each time He Bo uses an ability, he gains the Steady Flow buff which increases his magical power. The timer refreshes when another ability is used.
Magical power buff: 5%
Duration: 5s
Max stacks: 3
Ability type: Buff
Affects: self
This Ability is for the most part the worst passive in the game, if used incorrectly. Use it wisely, and it can occasionally get your magical power above 1000. I suggest using your ultimate directly after using the other 3 moves in sequence, to do the most damage obtainable.

Water Cannon
Description: He Bo fires a short burst of water from his hands, damaging all enemies in front of him.
Damage: 90/140/190/240/290 (+80% of your magical power)
Ability Type: Cone
Affects: Enemy
Cooldown: 3 seconds
Cost: 40/50/60/70/80 mana
This is an incredible ability, although because it requires you to get uncomfortably close to your enemy, I suggest upgrading this move second, after Waterspout. Using my build, it can reach a cooldown of 2.1 seconds.

Atlas of the yellow river
Description: He Bo unfurls his scroll in a line, releasing flood waters and causing enemies inside to move slower and He Bo and his allies to move faster while inside.
Slow Debuff: 30/35/40/45/50%
Speed Buff: 30/35/40/45/50%
Lifetime: 7s
Ability Type: Line
Affects: Enemy and Self
Cooldown: 10 seconds
Cost: 60/65/70/75/80 mana
This one is a lot different from the rest. It almost doesn't fit in with the rest of the moves. Many people think that this move was a waste of space that could've been used for another damaging move. But lets be honest, he would be way to OP. I like using this ability to move faster, but It's kinda bad when it comes to slows. The scroll is too thin, so enemies can get off of it quickly. Upgrade it last, as this move should be your last priority. My build gives this move a cooldown of 7 seconds.

Waterspout
Description: He Bo calls forth a geyser, causing it to burst out with tremendous force at his target location, damaging enemies while knocking them into the air.
Damage: 80/130/180/230/280 (+85% of your magical power)
Ability Type: Ground Target
Affects: Enemy
Radius: 10
Cooldown: 10 seconds
Cost: 65/70/75/80/85 mana
This move is the most important move out of the bunch. Don't expect to go places without this move. It will carry you through the game. Although it doesn't do as much damage as Water cannon, ALWAYS upgrade it first. This ability allows amazing pokes, and can even finish the job from a distance if an enemy escapes (highly unlikely). My build allows for a 7 second cooldown.

Crushing wave
Description: He Bo transforms into a wave and crashes forward, damaging all enemies in his path.
Damage:370/450/530/610/690 (+115% of your magical power)
Ability Type: Line
Affects: Enemy
Cooldown: 90 seconds
Cost: 100 mana
Don't take this ability lightly. If you see another He Bo, and you have under 2000 health, be afraid. This move can end team fights before they even start. I would say that this ability requires some preparation before it should be used (that is, if you are mid-lane. In team fights, feel free to start the fight with this move. Your team will quickly finish it, and they will thank you). My build allows a 62 second cooldown.

Combos

Poke combo

Just keep using Waterspout until you feel confident enough to engage in a Bread and Butter combo, or a Guaranteed death combo.

Bread and Butter combo

Almost like the Poke combo, you draw them in with Waterspout, then you use Water cannon. If you have a damage buff, you can easily kill a Neith (as early as mid-game) with this combo alone.

Guaranteed death combo

I suggest using Atlas of the yellow river first (to keep the enemy in place), and then Waterspout shortly after. Because Waterspout pushes them closer to you, now would be a perfect time for Water cannon. Remember, every time you use an ability, the next one gets stronger. If all three of these abilities are used in sequence, your passive should be at max stacks with 15% magical power. Crushing wave should be used right about now. If it is, it will hit just shy of 2000 damage. (Before protections).

Match-Ups

Arachne
There is not much advice to give about Arachne, other than to watch out for the webs. If you can avoid her web you will most likely always win. When she uses cocoon, which she will, you ABSOLUTELY NEED to successfully execute waterspout before she completes 3 successful basic attacks. Otherwise, it's over for you. From there just complete the death combo and you should be good. As for her ult, night crawler, you should use atlas of the yellow river and run INTO her ult. Due to the 40% speed buff, by the time she lands, you will have moved far enough to avoid her landing.

Fenrir
This is a hard one. he'll use unchained in an attempt to gank you, which is crucial considering when the passive is full, it'll stun. This will leave you open to large amounts of damage. All I can say about this is to make sure your jungler is there to protect you in your vulnerable state. If Fenrir uses brutalize, don't try to shake him with waterspout. I suggest using your crushing wave to get away, also doing lots of damage. Once you're out of your ult, spin around and use waterspout. On the way back down, hit him with he water cannon, thus completing the classic bread and butter combo. As for ragnarok... just purification beads.

Loki
Every mid hates Loki for obvious reasons. He can go invisible, his ult is the definition of OP, and his decoy can take care of an entire lane while he rapes you. But hopefully my advice will help ease the pain afterwards. For the vanish, you have to listen closely for the distinct sound. Even if you don't hear it, always be careful. Make sure to never over-extend without confirmation of Loki's location, or without your jungler by your side. When it comes to aimed strike, shake that fool with waterspout. Immediately after, atlas of the yellow river as far as you can. Keep your distance, as you don't want 2 daggers in your back. If you can keep poking from your tower, do it. Make sure that his only options are to stay away, or ult into a tower.

Zeus
Zeus is crazy. His damage output is unreal, his AoE presence is very strong, and his basic attacks are deadly. Yet I get happy whenever I see a Zeus walking into the mid lane, for the sole reason that he has no escapes at all. The only advice you need to succeed against a Zeus is to keep your distance. When he uses aegis assault, he WILL use chain lightning, no matter how inaccurate the aegis assault was. If you do take my only advice, we will have missed 2 moves, and wasted 150 mana. Not to mention that he's probably gonna auto attack the shield a couple of times. If he moves in to activate lightning storm, move backwards, maintaining your distance. If he still goes through with it, and the lightning strikes you maybe 2 or 3 times, don't bother popping sanctuary, or even meditation. That won't kill you. you'll be close enough to the edge of the AoE where you can just turn around and walk out, looking like a boss. He'll detonate the charges, but don't you worry. Some zeuses think they are assassins, and they'll try killing you with 100 basic attacks and then detonating all of the charges. If this happens, and you're afraid you'll die, look at his health. If it's even 3 quarters full, forget about how many charges are on you and kill that fool. Don't give him a chance to detonate them. This may sound risky, but trust me it isn't.

Janus
Lets get one thing straight; Janus is not dead. He is still very powerful, and a good fight. Getting side experience camps is a challenge, due to his portal allowing him to skip walking around to the other side of the camp. what I suggest, is luring him (and possibly his jungler) to the camp, and attempting to kill him/them before taking out the camp. Otherwise, the camp can easily be stolen. When in lane keep moving around. An immobile target is the easiest target for a ground portal. Some Januses try to be cheeky, and predict your movements when placing it. In order to avoid this, either stay a safe distance away, or try to move in the most unpredictable patterns you are capable of. If you want to hit him with waterspout, don't just walk in a straight line until the marker is hovering over him. He will most definitely place the portal 2 feet in front of you and laugh as you make a fool out of yourself. Try to move in a right or left diagonal as he is distracted with the lane. He will obviously see you, but the idea is that his moves will be wasted on the wave. As for his ult, if he decides to use it on you, which he probably won't, just keep moving and he'll probably miss.

Poseidon
Let's face it. Poseidon is He Bo but better. WWRRROONNGG. Don't listen to the fool that told you this clearly false information. Tidal surge is a line attack; enough said. Whirlpool can be just as easily avoided as aegis assault, and trident will be foolishly wasted on the minions. His ult is the only useful thing he has which, if you stay out of the direct center, will not knock you up. This is such a big deal because much like most Zeuses, Poseidons will use tidal surge directly after release the kraken. If you are out of the center, you wont get the knock up, and will have just avoided the surge. Now is a good time to ult, thus initiating the death combo. Another thing to note: if Poseidon whirlpools you, and there is no minions in the lane, 9 times outta 10, an ult is coming. If you've been on your feet (or spiraling waves, rather) you will be someplace close to the edge of the AoE. Most Poseidons will place the kraken's marker directly over the whirlpool's. So essentially, if you weren't in the center of the whirlpool, you wont be in the center of the kraken.

Updates, Thoughts, and Plans for the Future

Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making this build what it is today. I started this build over 3 years ago and have been updating it ever since, but what's helped me more than anything is all the support, suggestions, and criticism I've received since then. This guide will always be a work in progress, and as this game continues to change, so will the build. This section is the newest addition to the guide, and will help me keep everyone up to date on what I have in mind for the future. I would create a blog, but I don't plan on branching to other guides for a while.

Conclusion

Thank you very much for sitting through this guide. I encourage you to take at least some of my advice, as I have been playing He Bo since the start of my SMITE career. He is God rank 10, with over 3,000 kills, 3,000 assists, and 300 wins. Although I have been through double and triple worshiper events, I still have over 6,000 worshipers. I have experienced everything there is to experience in the middle lane and I share this experience with you through this guide.

Bancrofts should be added as an option.

As I've stated in the guide, each item was selected and tested in accordance with each other. While the individual stats of the item are good, it's efficiency cannot be maximized when combined with the other items listed. The stats of Soul Reaver combined with the passive of Book of Thoth add an additional 80+ magical power; just 20 shy of the full stats of Bancrofts. In other words, almost enough for virtually a 7th item. As for the life steal, He Bo cannot make use of it in ways that other mages can, and sacrificing another item to fit it in may compromise the builds integrity. People are more than welcome to switch out any item they please if they feel it suits them better, but it will not be added into the build. Thank you for the suggestion regardless :)

Lifesteal isn't the main point, it's just a bonus (though in joust this lifesteal is pretty useful). The whole point is for the extra power it can provide you early game, allowing you to turn on opponents and outplay them. Without some mana items / being a higher level in the match you don't really benefit from Book of Thoth early game except for early clear (which is only if you rush Book of Souls, and Talon Trinket pretty much provides the same benefit for early clear), which makes Bancrofts a stronger option early on in the match. Meanwhile Book of Thoth needs to be stacked fully to gain any major benefit from it's passive before you get more mana items online. Take Paul for instance, one of the best if not the best He Bo players. He builds Bancrofts first item since he starts with the tier 2 of bancrofts, Talon Trinket.

https://smiteprobuilds.com/Builds?p_filters_page=1&p_filters_search=&p_filters_god=1674&p_filters_pro=~&p_filters_opponent=~&p_filters_role=Mid&p_filters_league=SPL&p_filters_sort=~

He rushes Bancrofts on He Bo for the early game power spike. Add some flat pen items like Magi boots, deso or Magus and % pen from obsidian and you can get a lot of damage off early to mid game, with still highly relevant damage lategame, where Soul Reaver is still an option.

At the very least, avoid being close minded and add Bancrofts as an alternative item choice, even if you're not going to make it the focus of your main build.

Now thats out of the way, some other things need adjustments. First, remove Meditation Cloak. You absolutely should never build this item on He Bo outside of assault.

Second, your starter is lackluster. Way too much gold wasted on potions, and boots 1 is not a good start. Instead go Book of Souls, 1 Healing Potion and 2 x Mana Potions if you're building Book of Thoth. If it's joust, then bancrofts is even more important for the sustain it provides, in which case start Talon Trinket, 1 Mana Potion and either 1 Healing Potion or 1 Multi Potion.

And in regards to build stats, you do realise 900 magical power is the cap for items right? (Outside of buff passives and Steady Flow.

Oh dear what are these builds... Especially the second one.

Supposedly for all modes but I don't see a single mode that one would be good in. Maybe the first one in arena but it's still not great.

In this case, specifically the most questionable component is Ethereal Staff, and is not recommended. Yes, it provides a measure of survivability due to the health steal (different from lifesteal), but still, not recommended.

Also, because he's got such good poke and overall damage potential, you'll almost always want to go with Shoes of the Magi over Shoes of Focus. You want all the pen you can get.

Other popular items include Bancroft's Talon and Soul Reaver. Reaver in particular is great because his Water Cannon has such a low CD (3 seconds).

As for your skill leveling, when possible, you want to prioritize Water Cannon, again due to high damage and low CD on the ability, helpful for wave clear, jungle clear, etc. Yes, you have to be in close, but Waterspout has lower overall damage potential and is typically only going to used once for poke/control in a single engagement.

Which also begs the question: why are you putting more points into Atlas of the Yellow River before you max out Water Cannon?!?!?

Most of your items are fine, perhaps with some tweaks...Thoth is basically a given, and Ob Shard is generally core. But you want to show other options for items... Book of the Dead, Divine Ruin, etc. And again...probably need to get rid of Ethereal.

Also, I think you missed:
For the first build, Obsidian Shard is in there too early.
For the second build, he double stacks.

I think this was intended for conquest since tangodown mentions mid laning a lot throughout the guide. Also, lore should be removed from the guide. Someone looking to get better with this god won't care about He Bo's mythology.

Why is this guide listed under Season 5 if it is still using Season 4 starter items?

The category which a guide is placed in is chosen based on the last time the guide was updated, which was earlier this month. However, seeing as the title still mentions S4 and the cheatsheet still contains Soul Stone as part of the build, I think we can agree this author has more work to do ;)

Thank you for pointing this out. I have changed the build to match season 5, although I have not yet had a chance to test it out myself. My knowledge of season 5 comes solely from research, and not practice. I apologize in advance if the items contained in the build are no longer relevant to the meta. More changes to come! Thank you for your patience :)

This is a very interesting question... I guess it's safe to say that every mage has their own weaknesses. For He Bo, a problem many people have is escaping. He bo's only forms of escape are his ult and scroll. The problem here is that the scroll is merely a speed buff, and won't get you out of something like a Hades ult. The ult, however, will. The problem here is that using He Bo's ult to escape is usually never worth it. It is capable of so much damage, and would be a shame to use it to save yourself. There is however, the rare case when it is worth it. If your team desperately needs you, and you won't come back for 60 seconds if you die, then use the ult. Your 1 and 3 are not shy on damage, so stick with those to help the team. If escapes are the only thing holding you back, and you feel like sprint would be a good idea, ITS NOT. He Bo's scroll offers you a 50% movement speed buff, which is higher than sprint. Meaning if someone is chasing you down and pops sprint, you can and will outrun them by just using your scroll. All in all, One of He Bo's only weaknesses is escaping (alongside being squishy). If you would like to know more ways to combat this weakness, or if I didn't fully answer the question, feel free to PM me.

To be honest you can probably kill the Hades before he kills you with his ult.

get obsidian shard like the other guy said, or a spear of magus to help out other mages. Penetration is very important for all mages you should get it every game.

]for the penetration issue, i'd suggest adding the pen item obsidian shard as replacement for polynimicon in this case i've tried the build with it and it works just as fine,
penetration is very important for Hebo it helps him make his high damage due to the build very effective on basically every opponent and with the extra life, he's basically a bruiser like hercules and becomes a destructive force with high survivability!

Thank you very much for this recommendation! I appreciate the fact that you have stated why this is a good alternative. I have added Obsidian shard to the Changes and Additions section. If enough people like your idea, it might make it to the final build!!!
