Powerful Chipmunk (Non-crit power build)

Notes Classic Ability-based Ratatoskr. Good early game, great at mid-game, kinda ok at late.

Use auto-reset (1 basic between every skill you use) to maximize your burst power.

Brawler's Beat Stick is a powerful power spike that even if you don't have an enemy with strong lifesteal or healing, it's too good right now to not build. But if you prefer CDR, get jotun's as first item.

Get CDR totem (blue) on your buff until you finish hydra, then pick lifesteal (red).

Extended Build

Nuke Bomb Chipmunk (Crit Build Example)

Notes Crit build focusing on bursting targets. It almost one-shot people with Dart and a basic attack. It has extremely high DPS and can make you a mini carry at late game. Tyhe downside is that your early is awful and mid-game is meh. It's very effective against squishy comps (few or no tanks at all).

Get Devoted Deathbringer as 4th item if you are ahead.

Get CDR totem (blue) on your buff until you finish hydra, then pick lifesteal (red).

Starter options

Notes Starters you may pick.
  • Manikin Hidden Blade - offers great burst damage when you are the one that hits first (nothing hard to do with your ulti/dash) but the base version IS TERRIBLE, so think twice if you want to suffer until late game.
  • Bumba's Spear - Standard start for your matches, offer great stats and great passive to help you one shot people.
  • Protector Of The Jungle - great start if you intend to go on a tanky build.
  • Seer Of The Jungle - great option only if you are with your friends in a call, so you can see the enemy wards and alert them. It has good stats so can be kinda helpful, but I do not recommend this if you are alone.

Notes Your item options for most of the games.
  • Titan's Bane - Pick if you need a lot of %pen and do not need the lifesteal
  • Hydra's Lament - Great damage option, offers cdr, power, pen, mana regen, everything you need.
  • Jotunn's Vigor - Great option for pen and cdr. Gives you a "fight for your life" passive when dying.
  • Serrated Edge - If you need a good amount of %pen + lifesteal, this is the item.
  • Heartseeker - Your option to melt tanks. Offers also good stats even against squishes, but pick for the tanks.
  • Bloodforge - Can be an option if you want power spike to snowball or at late game to increase your survivability.
  • Transcendence offers a lot of power and flat pen, great when you want to keep your pressure late game.
  • Runebreaking Hammer - great option since you can easily engage with a stun or knockup.

Crits

Notes If you want crit rat, choose 2 items from this pool. Only pick items from here if you know how crit rat works and got Bristlebush Acorn.
  • Devoted Deathbringer - Must buy on every crit build as your 5th or 6th item. OP Glyph, always get devoted.
  • Bladed Boomerang - It's cheap and does not need any stacks, great if you don't want to fall behind/is not stomping. However, you have to pick the drops to increase the crit chance to great levels.
  • Demon Blade - If you are needing Crit and %pen on your build, get this item. The attack speed is a minor bonus that is welcome.
  • Rage - combined with your acorn, this item when stacked gives a great amount of power and elevates the crit chance to a very high level.

Situational Items

Notes Items you will want only in some specific situations.
  • Brawler's Beat Stick - is only useful against lifesteal/healing enemies, and only if you didn't get crits and glyphed DB on your build (that also reduces shields). Has power and great flat pen, but the passive is trash.
  • Thickbark Acorn - Is your best option if you are not going on a full power build (tank/bruiser builds). Not so good on builds without defenses.
  • Arondight - Great if you are having trouble to reach/keep up with someone after ulting.
  • The Crusher - Gives you tick damages after hitting abilities on the enemy allowing you briefly see where a stealth target is trying to run/break the stealth.

I want to tell you everything you need to know about this cute little guy so you can play with him in solo or jungle. I personally love this character because he is fun, funny, and has the best VP and personality on the entire Smite and whoever disagrees is wrong >:( !!!

Anyway, as his Eager Skin would say, LEEET'S GOOO!!!!!

Pros and Cons

Jungle

Pros
  1. Excellent early/mid-game
  2. Extreme oppressive when ahead
  3. Excellent chase potential
  4. Excellent self setup
  5. Great Burst
  6. Easy to play (and stomp)
  7. Cutest god of all the game
Art by vangel4e via DeviantArt
Cons
  1. Very squishy
  2. 1 less item on your build
  3. Very hard to build
  4. Damage fall a bit at late game
  5. Mana hungry at early game
  6. A lot of Nerfs
  7. Can be annoying sometimes :p
In other few words...
RATATOSKR STRENGTHS ARE that he's easy to play, can stomp and get ahead because he has a great self setup which means he usually does not need anything from anyone to 1 v 1 during lane phase, being capable of burst people fairly quickly and when ahead is extremely oppressive with the semi global ulti to engage or chase people. He is also cute. ON THE OTHER HAND, he is very hard to build because the acorn takes a slot from your build, so you have to deal against 5 people using only 4 slots. To get worse he is extremely squishy becoming very hard to do anything late game by yourself even you can 1 v 1 due to a lot of nerfs he received.

Solo

Pros
  1. High damage early game
  2. Extremely oppressive against squishes/low pressure gods
  3. Great wave clear and poke
  4. Complete kit for solo
  5. Can tank and yet hurt a lot
  6. Great chase/escape potential
  7. Cutest god of all the game 2.0
Art by JT via DeviantArt
Cons
  1. Can't tank well without
    losing a lot of damage
  2. 1 less item on your build
  3. Very hard to build
  4. Damage fall at late game
  5. Very mana hungry early
  6. Nerfs, nerfs and nerfs... 2.0
  7. Can be easily snowballed
In other few words...
RATATOSKR STRENGTHS ARE that he's easy to play, can stomp and get ahead fairly easy on solo if you are not facing the top meta picks or gods with insane early pressure as Hades. Once ahead he can totally dominate and snowball the solo, especially against physical enemies and even though he's an assassin, he still capable of frontlining due to his complete kit with CC and debuffs. He is also cute. ON THE OTHER HAND, he still an assassin, so he won't tank as much as guardian or warrior and if the enemy puts you behind, since you are an assassin, made to deal damage, you probably will stay behind, plus the build problem remains with 1 less item, making it even harder to build on solo since the builds are usually more complex than jungle (that is usually only deal burst damage).

How to play in Solo

solo

How to play in Jungle

Tips to your match

  • Your job as solo is now to start fights, tank a little, force some relics of the squishes and help your team get kills. You are NOT supposed to be a total tank and frontline in a team fight, a meat shield.

  • You may also hold your ultimate in case of ganks (if solo), or hotter situations, 'cause you can really save yourself. I strongly recommend you build CDR in all rat builds.

  • If solo, you can be aggressive and push your lane against your enemy tower and if you see yourself in trouble just retreat using your ultimate or Dart. By doing this, you will force your enemy solo to stay near the tower more than the normal, lowering the possibilities of the gank/help other lanes and making him lose some money.

  • If you have ever played Ratatoskr solo you probably know that Evergreen Acorn is the best choice by far for early sustain. However, ratatoskr CAN SELL the acorn and buy another one, so if you are playing solo, maybe switching the evergreen for Thickbark Acorn (that's better late game on teamfights) is a good thing. Plus if you were healing a lot the enemy made antihealing but now you are tankier and reducing twice their protections and stealing those for you, they are probably not ready for that :v
Art by nahiti via FurAffinity
  • Help people whenever is possible. Remember you have Through the Cosmos, one of the best ultimates in the game, so USE IT.

  • No matter which acorn/build you have, it's part of ratatoskr gameplay:
    1. Strong early-game (after level 2 or 3)
    2. Very Strong mid-game
    3. Okish (mediocre) late-game
Why? Well because once you have unlocked your acorn and abilities, they have a lot of CC/utility and damage, so when facing 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 1 on a gank it's extremely easy to you get a kill, but at late game, you have 5 man teamfights so you have to worry about multiple threats plus you are really squishy, any cc can be a sentence of death when jungling and on solo although you may die that quickly, you still lacking the extra HP/Prots warriors and guardians natively have.

Warding

what are these points?

Acornization

Acorns! Humm yummy!

Understanding each Acorn

Now I will talk about each rat acorn so you can understand each one and choose the best option for your match.

Evergreen Acorn
This acorn is made for sustain. Whenever you need to heal yourself a lot during fights this is the acorn. Due to the %HP healing it works better in a bruiser/tank build and can be combined with Soul Eater for insane regen. On solo, it is a particularly effective way to compete with your enemy in sustain, especially if he doesn't have any sustain at all or can heal only on ultimate, but it cannot outhealing gods with a standard healing ability. It doesn't shine as much as the other option, discussed later, so it feels kind of a meme most of the time.
.

Thickbark Acorn
This acorn is made for tank/bruiser builds. It steals physical protections, which means anything in the game deals less damage to you (including your enemy if he is also physical) and you do more damage to them too. Usually, the standard option for solo and support because you heal yourself a bit but can deal good damage while tank due the protections stole. You actually can use it in jg since Flurry is the skill that normally hits harder in your kit plus you have 2 charges meaning double damage. However, it is only useful on bruiser builds because you do have to spend a lot of time using 2 flurries and if you are purely power you can die for a combo doing that (plus there's already an acorn to burst damage that I will talk next). Remember that you can always switch Evergreen Acorn into this one late game if you have built it during the early game for sustain.
.

Thistlethorn Acorn
This acorn is the most traditional Ratatoskr (before this last rework). It allows rat deal good damage using only his skills and auto-resets. This falls a bit at late game but you may still capable of 100-0 a squishy target most of the time. This one is better the end of the early game, mid, and the start of late game when compared with the crit one, exactly the opposite. Pretty standard option for the jungle and burst damage in general.
.

Bristlebush Acorn
This acorn is also made for burst power. If you are facing multiple squishes or just want to blow the enemies very quickly, this can be an option. It provides a giant burst with crits and although rat is not a basic attacker he can use the crits well due to Dart being able to crit with this acorn, plus the increased damage on basic attacks and extra lifesteal, doing massive damage with 2 buttons (almost an Anubis). If you get ahead, you are totally unstoppable, capable of dpsing as much as an ADC.
However, keep in mind it's a totally mid-late game build. Early game/mid game it's a full gambling since you are throwing yourself in front of the enemy to kill or be killed, and you literally can't count with the crit hit on Dart due to the low crit chance, so it is very risky and kind of meme to be built sometimes, and since the Thistlethorn Acorn exists, that has a bit less burst but is consistent basically throughout the entire course of the game, so crits usually aren't the best option.
Also remember Spectral Armor exists, protecting even squishes against crits, so yeah, very risky but very fun and funny.

Builds

Before reading this section, remember that Solo and Jungle builds are completely different and your playstyle will also be completely different too, so, don't forget to click on the "Solo build" button on the top right near the "Newest gods part" ;).

Random Facts

  • Ratatoskr was released at SMITE Version 2.7.2766 (June 2, 2015) (Season 2)

  • This guide name is based on a Ratatoskr line when he destroys a Structure.

  • Ratatoskr is the smallest playable god in SMITE.

  • Ratatoskr had 4 different acorns at his launch, each one doing something different (opening a lot of possibilities of builds).

  • All Ratatoskr skills were balanced/modified when he was reworked at patch 3.9.3413 (Season 3) (May 24, 2016).

  • Ratatoskr is mentioned in INCREDIBLE 24 different patches, where ONLY 2 WERE BUFFS. The rest of the patches were bug fixes, reworks, and nerfs after nerfs. (And yet he is NOT WEAK!)
Art by TheYaminoTenshi via FurAffinity
  • Ratatoskr used to be able to use, incredibly, 6 dashes of 35 unities when he was launch using Dart. Every dash could fire lightnings that were able to crit, allowing ratatoskr to deal almost 8k damage with this skill against squishy comps. That's 1 skill, you had other 3 :p.
Art by Hirez via Smitegame
  • Rat (along with Bellona, Baron Samedi and Guan Yu) is considered one of the most overpowered gods ever launched on this game.

  • Ratatoskr first rework was a mistake because it removed his other acorns keeping only one as a single option and his kit became a " Thor but better", until Thor, at patch 6.8.5557.1 (July 24, 2019) received major buffs and a slight rework on his 3, then Thor became a " Ratatoskr but better". At least Rat was always more fun/funny than Thor.

  • Ratatoskr received since his launch 35, I repeat, THIRTY FIVE nerfs and ONLY 4 buffs in all patches he is mentioned (not considering PTS changes). Ironically, 2 of these buffs were directly reverting previous nerfs.

  • Ratatoskr is a Tree Squirrel. (I guess)

  • The skin "Squirrel Squad" could have been based on the character Rocky the Flying Squirrel from the American cartoon The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.
  • The Curious Creature, his the best skin, is a reference to the Disney movie Zootopia. This skin was based on A Fanart made by Ena Lorenzo, who works at Alacrity Arthouse, and made a draw called "Smetitopia", honestly, best skin theme ever. Both this skin and Heavy Hitter Anubis are in the card art of Geek Beak Thoth skin, which shares its theme with both.
  • The name "Ragnatoskr" is a mix between the word "Ragnarok" and "Ratatoskr". As you see, he wears a costume of Fenrir, the bringer of Ragnarok. Rat shouts a lot in this skin Voice Pack so it might be a bit annoying during a stressful game.

  • Kitsune was the first skin where Rat is not a Squirrel, instead, he is a Fox. This is the first time a Ratatoskr skin with a custom VP doesn't mention nuts and it's also one of the few skins in the game to use cell shading (those black lines around the body) (which also made it kinda "ugly"). It also has 2 recolors, Kage (Shadow in Japanese) and Zenko. By having all the 3 you automatically unlock a 3rd recolor "Final Fusion" skin. Although they are all recolors of Kitsune, each skin has its own voice pack.

  • Curious Creature used to be one of the banned skins of SPL along with Kitsune + its recolors, probably due to low sound on some abilities, especially the Ulti. However, at Season 7 HR fixed it and all these skins were allowed again.

  • Rat also has one of the most annoying laughs in the game. His Standard VP is also pretty damn good, better than a lot of Standard VP and better than a lot of skins...Including Curious Creature.

  • Ratatoskr dance is based on "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Born This Way" (At 0:53) from their 3rd movie (I do hate that movie, they should have made it based on "How we Roll" from the first movie. Even the music would fit him better).

  • Ratatoskr received a second rework on patch 7.7 (July 14th, 2020) "bringing back" his acorns. They didn't come back as they were but after this patch, he was allowed to choose between 4 acorn options again, each one with a different passive and stats.
  • Ratatoskr tail always glowed according to the color of the acorn he was holding. During his first rework, as he only had 1 blue acorn option, his tail remained blue. However, at launch/after his 2nd rework, with each acorn having 1 color, his tail changes the color according to the acorn you have.
  • After 2nd rework, they added a acorn near ratatoskr for a dumb reason. In their words: "it should help people see which acorn ratatoskr has and find the best way to fight against him". Apparently, they think that we can't press the score button (TAB on PC) to see it :p

  • Ratatoskr is one of the few characters in the game that ACTUALLY IS NOT A GOD. Other examples are Scylla, Medusa, King Arthur, Merlin...

  • Ratatoskr along with Baba Yaga and Baron Samedi are currently the only gods who can build special items from either abilities or item store that no other god can own by default.

  • On his festive Skin, Rat is dressed like Rudolph. He also seems to sing when saying his "Ultimate is ready/down" line. This skin has the calmest voice lines of all ratatoskr skins.

  • Ratatoskr Deep Space skin is the first skin he is not an animal and one of the worst skins in the game.

  • Ratatoskr, Cupid and Ne Zha are the only male gods voiced by a woman.
Art by Simibutts via FurAffinity
  • Ratatoskr is one of the few gods in the game that is a complete animal (Egyptian gods are most part made by a head of an animal and a human (humanized) body). Other examples are Kukulkan, Camazotz, Jormungandr, Fenrir...

  • Ratatoskr Raxolotl (the skin on the picture) is the first skin where Ratatoskr is not a mammal. In April of 2020, the Smite main Twitter account conducted a poll to decide which species this skin would be based on. The choices were between a red panda, an otter, a cat, and an axolotl.

  • Ratatoskr Raxolotl on the full card art shows Kuzenbo and his kappas minions, Cove Queen Nu Wa and Poolseidon Poseidon in the background. This was the second skin of ratatoskr that is not a squirrel.
  • Ratatoskr along with Chang'e and Gilgamesh are the only gods who can obtain certain items from anywhere on the current game mode being played.

  • If you search for Ratatoskr images, select one, and see the "similar results", you will see the algorithm thinks Ratatoskr is Gnar from league of legends. This picture explains why (Art by miyuu490 via DeviantArt). Do I need to say anything else?

Remember what rat says!

Ratatoskr just want to ask to hirez...

If you have any doubt that rat can do any role, watch this!

Final Considerations

"I'm here to crack nuts and pick flowers and I'm all outta flowers!"

Best skin ever

My final considerations are that he is incredibly fun/funny to play and is extremely versitile, allowing you to have a different game everytime you play a match.
He can be an excellent jungler, ultra fun to play with and a real solo laner that is inferior in 0 aspects to warriors.

If you follow the tips and ideas posted here, I'm 100% sure you will dominate the battlefield and he will become your favorite god to play with!!!

Tbh before the nerfs, the new one was even better, even more burst. But now, yeah, I miss that too. You still can get anti healing on hydra slot but no good anti shield anymore u.u

What do you think about items like Dawnbringer or Runeforged Hammer?
1
xmysterionz (71) | October 19, 2023 4:09pm
They are ok items tbh but rat problem is that acorn take a slot, so everything you must do, you need to do it in 5 slots. Usually, it's barely enough so I can't see you fitting those items on a jungler build. On solo, it's easier and they can work after you already own your protections.

Note that runeforge is meh without the glyphs, and I'm not sure if you should kill a pridwen/breastplate glyph for it.

I've seen Runeforge perform decently for him in Jungle lately

Soul Eater is a good item for him. I don't see it listed anywhere.

It could be a good item if you didn't have to deal with 4 slots only.

On jungle I'd pick Jotunn's Vigor since it's as cheap as SE but does not need any stack and offers 10% extra CDR and tbh I don't think you need sustain when in jungle because you simply explode people and get out. On a crit build is even pointless because dart + red acorn and serrated already offers plenty of lifesteal. It could be relatively useful if you get the bruiser build in jungle if you pick as 1st item.

On solo it would be very decent but simply there's not a slot to fit it in. If you do, you will have only 3 slots to become tank + counter the enemy. So it's much safer just pick sigil that offers healing on hit combined with your "tank" acorns, plus the healing is based on your hp, much better for a tank than based on damage.

It is useful in very niche situations, I could add as a situational, but I'm really sure you are better serverd with other item 98% of the times.

I can definitely understand the reasoning behind Jotunn's Wrath over Soul Eater. However, I still think it deserves some merit for the better sustain at a cheaper price point.

Where would you put Hun Bats in terms of threat/do you have any tips for him as a counter? I seem to have a lot of trouble with him
1
xmysterionz (71) | August 15, 2023 4:43pm
Hun Batz is a minor threat, in fact he is not a threat, Fear No Evil is the only threat he is to you. Grab Purification Beads and try to use it a mile second before the ult stars, so you can avoid losing target on him during the fight (because fear forces you to turn your back to him). Not too early but not too late.

You are a threat since you get your acorn, especially Thistlethorn Acorn, but he needs some 3 items to really start bursting, so you should be aggressive early game. Late game, you can chase him if he escapes with his jump, but the ideal scenario is to burst him immediately on a fight with your stun + auto resets and of course hold your beads for him.

If you aren't able to hold your beads, Magi's Cloak (the bubble) is something to be considered, the cloak for his team, your beads to him. And I also suggest you upgrade the beads ASAP to reduce its cdr (T2 beads is only 300 gold) if he is using the ulti on you a lot.

Could you describe your typical interactions with Hun while you're Rat? Is it mainly his ult where you end up having the biggest problems? Is it more early-game jungle, mid-game smaller fights or late-game full teamfights?

HB has a slow in his leap, and obviously the fear in his ult. That ult has a long CD. Obviously it can still outwork your beads, but otherwise, you have a lot of more readily available CC in your kit. If he closes distance with either leap or monkey, you have the immediate capability of stunning him with your acorns. Your dash and his leap sort of cancel each other out with regard to distance, so perhaps it's more of an initiation thing...who is determining the interaction? If you're reacting to him because you're intimidated / he's ahead, there's only so much you can do maybe.

I think my problem was getting blink instead of beads starting the match. I just played a conquest against him, grabbed beads first, and had no issue with him. Thanks for the tip!
