Hey Rvynn, nice update, and funny writeups in tab 3 =)

I notice that in your standard non-Conquest build (tab 1), you've now delayed Doom Orb til item #5. Is this purely to max CDR/get your core online ASAP?

Hey Bran, just noticed this! (Sorry)

Doom Orb for me, personally, is still purchased as my second item. The movement speed, mp5, and power spike for the price is ridiculous early game, and Discordia already has a weaker early game than most. The build order just looks like that, because that's where I stuck it. I'll edit the guide to re-clarify regarding purchase orders on my example builds.

My example builds are always finalized, but they do not reflect purchase orders. I do this because everyone builds differently at different times, and also, situations change (counter-building).

The build that closely resembles the way I build (in general) would be my soul stone build (build 3).

I see you've updated your guide...dammit. Could have used that against you.

FYI for other readers, I was playing Rvynn's sweet Discordia last night, and got severely outplayed by her playing Nox in a Clash match.

I was struggling with a few things in this game (but sort of made up for it in a following Arena game. Anyway, so I've been playing a lot of her lately, because she's just so fun. I totally get the early maxing of CDR for constant harass.

In any case, I didn't feel comfortable in this Clash match because I felt high pressure from you, Odin, and Nu Wa. I told you in chat last night that I thought I'd have more time to turn and jump quickly, but your Nox dash + silence was crazy for closing the gap and preventing me from jumping (or pulling me out mid-jump). I guess I could have played it a lot more aggressively and jumped toward you, but with Odin constantly looking to bird bomb and ult, I didn't feel like I had a lot of choice. So having to maintain a VERY large distance due to your potential to dash along with pressure from other enemies, I wasn't able to spam abilities like I wanted.

I've been struggling the most with mage builds of all classes in S5. Here's what I did this game, and it was weird and it wasn't optimal, but it is what it is.

Started Mage's Blessing. Got Shoes of Focus, Chronos' Pendant and Spear of Desolation (then selling Mage's Blessing). Since I was getting poked and damaged so much (and forced to back way more than I wanted), I felt like lifesteal would help in this match, so I decided to get Bancroft's Talon. I personally would have preferred Pythagorem's Piece, but I had max CDR so that wasn't really an option.

At that point, I wasn't sure what to do. Probably should have just gotten Shaman's Ring for the added movespeed, but I think I had a ton of gold and just went for Rod of Tahuti. I know the nerf hurt it in ways, but the high base power still seemed like it would be functional. In any case, with only 1 tanky-ish god ( Odin), I didn't feel like Obsidian Shard would be a good choice, and again, was just so pressured that I felt I needed protection. So I bought Mantle of Discord and, because that would overcap CDR, I switched out Shoes of Focus for Shoes of the Magi.

I do need to try Doom Orb but not sure that it would have been a good choice in this match. Again, probably should have picked up Shaman's Ring...that movespeed would have been nice. Ethereal Staff is also something that might have been helpful.

So...curious, what would you have done in my place? Was it just a gameplay style where I was being too passive (scared lol)?

Honestly didn't realize it was you that match until you mentioned it in lobby chat. Whenever I play against a Discordia I intentionally bully them into my *****. No lie. Because that makes them step back and go more on the defensive rather than being on the offensive, causing you to cast less (because you're afraid of being countered/caught out during poke).

If a Nox was bullying me, I would get movement speed to make it more difficult for them to hit me with their combo. Like I mentioned in my "counter god" section, you want to bully the Nox/Scylla before they try to bully you--because it's what sets the pace of the game. If you allow it, they can be oppressive to you, and they capitalize on it with glee.

If I was playing against our team comp, this is what I would have done for a build:

> Mage's Blessing
> Doom Orb
> Shoes of Focus
> Spear of Desolation
> Chronos' Pendant
> Soul Reaver
> Shaman's Ring (Sell Mage's Blessing)
> Rod of Tahuti (Sell Doom Orb)

This is how I would have made plays:

Erratic Behavior out of Odin ult every time. The extra movement speed would have made it more difficult for me to combo you. Having Soul Reaver, you Unruly Magic my face and chunk me down. I no longer risk dashing into you (I am immediately cautious about your damage output now). Ult Nox/Serq in the face every time it's up, follow up with 2 > 1 combo. Watch as my team follows up on the kills/engage. Look for opportunities for Strife. Look for opportunities to poke with 2 > 1 (because less risk with added movement speed). Get beads/aegis or beads/blink -- with quick reflexes beads out of any combo+3 away, aegis dmg spikes (Nu Wa), 3 and blink away from odin or blink+ult someone's face (aggression).

Your Cern and Ymir were actually really oppressive towards our team and they were doing a lot of work--so just having that extra backbone from a Discordia would have won you the game. But because I made you afraid at the start of the game, it ultimately made you do less. Odin only had 2 MR items (bulwark and spirit robe), so Spear and Shaman's + Soul Reaver would have hurt him a lot. And the rest of the team had almost zero added defenses (always have to take into consideration baseline defenses imo, which is why I still build Spear of Deso early).

I also didn't get to finish my build, I was going to sell Doom Orb for Rod of Tahuti and sell Stone of Binding for Gem of Isolation, to be even more oppressive towards your team. I really like stone of binding on Nox, because it constantly procs during her root, which is a giant "GO!" flag for my team to beat the **** out of you.

But, that's how I would have played it! Thoughts?
Edit: Also, for clarity, I noticed you referred to me as a Him, I am indeed not a Him. :)

I didn't know you played at the times I do...we should play some games together (especially if you like losing...everyone needs to stay humble, right?).

Hmm yeah, overall I think everything you said makes sense. I did in fact read that section in your guide about Nox/Scylla (after the match but before I wrote the preceding comment).

I did think a few times about trying to be more aggressive, and I think I might have done it once though I don't remember if it was in opposition to you or Nu Wa, though I think I proceeded to miss my Strife, which was just bad. You definitely had me on my heels the entire game.

Curious, if I was more aggressive, would you (as in your personality) truly have become more defensive in your game, or are you naturally aggressive and would have just worked to continue to outplay me?

I don't personally like Soul Reaver, so maybe Ethereal Staff is the compromise...I don't like that it's a 40 second CD for an additional 200 (somewhat random depending on what is happening when it comes off CD) damage.

I hold back my ults a lot...always feel like I need to find the right time, and I think sometimes that means I miss opportunities where it could have worked well. I was also hesitant about even trying it on you or Serqet (no qualms about targeting Nu Wa) because of your ability to dash, while the ult charge up is a huge flashing light giving you time to make moves.

One of the last times I died, I think, was toward the middle of the map. Pretty sure you were there, and the Odin bird-bombed me...because that basically chunks 1/2 of my life, I felt I needed to use Erratic Behavior to escape that damage...but he then ulted and I was trapped. I guess I was sort of screwed either way, as I think my Aegis Amulet was down, and I didn't get Phantom Veil for that match (just beads and aegis).

Also, funny enough, when I was writing the original comment above, I had said him a couple more times, but then realized I didn't know if you were a him, and made those neutral. Guess I missed one =P Sorry about that!

A little update with my experience on this build. I've run with it for the last few weeks following the order (i know it's not a purchase order) and I've gone at 6/0 and higher with jousts and conquests. I've since incorporated obsidian shard and experimented with the order, and it hasn't really failed yet. Plus learning how to evade is HUGE benefit with her.

I'm glad to hear about your success using the double-ring build! I do think Discordia is strong at the moment, however, I have seen plenty of Discordia players not utilize her kit to it's fullest extent (High CDR), and therefore actually under-perform with the God. So I am happy to receive your feedback!

I started playing around with it, and made a sort of hybrid of yours and a mix of other builds. Start with: Soul Stone, Shoes, Beads of Purification or Aegis(depending on enemy comp).

Then I build: Shoes of the Magi, Book of Thoth, Book of the Dead, Rod of Tahuti, Soul Reaver and last item varies on enemy comp. I typically roll with Beads/Aegis and Blink. Blink has been monumental for securing kills/escapes.

Actually did well enough with the items I named, I got a star on her now. Hit 2200 worshipers the other day.

Along with keeping up on blue buff and utilizing Erratic Behavior I've noticed a pretty good outcome. Satisfying to completely melt a greedy Thanatos with solid power. I'll sometimes splash some CDR in with spear or chronos, the power has made a bit better of a difference than just going complete CDR. I would sometimes get farmed on since I couldn't do enough damage. Probably important to note that I also conquest a lot more now than when I first started playing around with your builds. I spent a good hour or two in jungle practice mode with a few friends practicing using Erratic Behavior and playing with CDR/power/pen items. Still testing which is gonna have a more balanced/effective outcome for how I play Discordia.

Your success is noted, but I think part of this is also due to Discordia being somewhat strong at this point.

And at least in the order of the first build (you said "this build" but didn't clarify which one, as he has 4), it would be strongly suggested to get the starter item and some potions first in Conquest, rather than start with Shoes of Focus.

Also, regarding relics, others that should be considered in that mode should probably include Heavenly Wings and Bracer of Undoing.

Sorry, I meant build 1. In conquest I always run Sands and shoes, then consumables. Usually Mana chalice and a couple health pots. Don't have to back until at least level 5-7 depending on enemy comp.

I'm curious as to why you pick up Hide of the Urchin so late. For another 450 gold, you could go with Mantle of Discord instead. With Hide's nerfs, I don't think it's really worth bothering with it as a final item unless you can somehow max out its protections via kills and assists. Sure extra health and mana are nice, but do they really make that much of a difference towards end-game? I'm not being sarcastic, I would really like to know. :)

You purchase your items in the order you wish to. The item build is not a purchase order, just finalized product.

Newer players may or may not understand that. You should explicitly state when it's ideal to build stacking items like Hide of the Urchin.

But anyway, that's just my opinion. It's your guide, so display the info however you want.

Unfortunately, the site presents it as the purchase order. I think you may want to consider changing it to an actual purchase order to avoid any confusion.

IMO, hide shouldn't be built any later than 4th.

Gulfwulf (21) | December 14, 2017 12:44am
That's my thought as well, Boogie, which is why I asked. I don't think the Hide is worth rushing, but you might not be able to fully stack its passive if you buy it last or next to last.

Starting a new comment thread. Hope you don't mind so many comments on your guide. Also, based on the success I've had in a short period of time, I'm giving this an upvote, though I want to try out alt builds to see with a larger sample size how it performs in comparison...always interested in getting the most out of a build style.

One more game. Relatively even teams, in acct level and SmiteGuru's Elo scoring system...enemy team had only 1 tank, which helped on the lower pen part of the equation. Also felt they didn't target me as much as they should have, but I was making it hard for them to get close, though Artio, Nemesis, and Cernunnos tried at times. I'm sure if I faced more hard CC I would have had more issues.

Highest damage on the team again...54k, even higher than last game. Next closest was Ullr on my team with 36k. Same standard build. I was more used to spamming her abilities, and got tons of poke. My score was much better this time...8/1/11.

It's seriously weird, I don't feel I move all that fast even with the full build, whereas with some other gods, getting a bit extra feels much faster. Maybe it's just her flying animation.

In any case, did well, but some things were in my favor, I think, including enemy team comp. Also, the Nem and Cern builds hurt my soul. Overall, I think the consistently high damage output is 50% due to the ASAP CDR max, and 50% is because it's just freaking Discordia. Will continue playing more...didn't get more than 1 game in tonight cuz wife wanted to watch a movie.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the build.

I do think it's probably her flying animation that makes it feel like she's not moving very quickly. But when she attacks, and is standing upright, you can feel the difference in speed, imho.

Good overview and general information for Discordia. I do wonder about your items just a bit, along with the order.
  • You list Shoes of Focus before Sands of Time. In almost all cases, I would suggest Sands first...Conquest, Arena, whatever. It's a pretty decent source of mana sustain, and as a starter item, well, it's generally meant to be purchased first. It looks like more than 75% of your games are either in Arena or Joust, so it might be good to talk about that in your guide as a reason for getting Sands 2nd...you shouldn't do that in Conquest.

  • Don't have a specific problem with Chronos' Pendant early, but you've passed up any penetration until you finally get Spear of Desolation as the 4th item (Bling build, 3rd item Maximized build). Although not the most reliable ability for poke, Unruly Magic can be pretty nice, and blasting max CDR in the first 3 items before getting any pen seems a bit less functional. (Then again, I'm still thinking about Conquest) I think you might get a bit better benefit if you got Deso first, followed by Chronos at a later point. Deso, once online, will give you close to true damage against most squishy gods that haven't built any protections, at that might get you more kills.

  • I get the idea of Shaman's Ring and Telkhines Ring, especially for the move speed since she doesn't have a great escape, but both seems a bit much for MS. Honestly, I think both items, overall, are not the greatest options for her. How often will you get all 3 stacks from Telkhines Ring anyway? She doesn't have any DoT abilities...when not using the ult, she's only likely to get 1 hit from each of her 1 and 2 (sometimes stack all 3 if you get lucky with the explosion from Unruly), so you're not often getting max stacks. It's better for gods that can easily get all 3 stacks quickly from 1 ability, then follow that up with other abilities with the maxed power. I know you have "proof" of the build giving you tons of damage, but I daresay you'd still have done tons without it. If you're set on the added move speed, I think I'd choose Shaman's over Telk.

  • I know you have your disclaimer on your core items, but why is Obsidian Shard not one of the options at least? Deso by itself might be fine against squishies, but against anyone else, you'll probably want the reliable pen from Obsidian. It should at least be an option when facing tankier teams.

  • I do like that you've recognized some defensive items as possibilities. That said, I don't think Hide of the Urchin is best for what is typically a mage that deals damage from distance. Spirit Robe is somewhat more functional due to the CDR at least giving you something useful to mages, but when you max your CDR with basically your first 3 items, one of which is Chronos' Pendant, you leave yourself no options like Spirit. You'll usually want to consider items like Celestial Legion Helm (which you did list), Stone of Fal (against high burst magical damage), Dynasty Plate Helm (early item for gank protection against physicals, plus the pen), and Spectral Armor (direct counter to assassins that might look to drop in, like Thor's ult.
Anyway, would like to hear your thoughts. Good start to your guide.

Thanks for your feedback. I don't think you fully understand my builds, as what you've suggested, or rather, what you're looking for, has already been published in the other Discordia guide posted by Dann. My builds focus on maximum CDR and mobility.

I don't play conquest very much, and if I do, I play support, not mid. I'd happily "label" my "guide" as such, however, my builds are universal. Item orders and purchases can be different per person and situation, which is why all of my builds are just generalized, with no real purchase order. It is simply the final product, and it is up to the player to determine when they should purchase what.

Branmuffin17 (221) | December 7, 2017 7:46pm
Hi Rvynn, I'm not arguing max CDR, but rather the process by which you're maxing it. Maxing CDR for the pure sake of maxing it (at the expense of other things) is more of what I was getting at. By getting 50% CDR out of your first 4 items (and subsequently selling Sands to bring you back to max) without first getting any pen is just not as optimal to me. It's really an easy fix, by getting Deso before Chronos (e.g. just switch the positions of those two items), and it will definitely enhance your damage...but in the end, this is your build, and I'm just offering my opinion and suggestion.

I understand your build idea, but didn't fully understand your intent of getting basically 40% MS as another core target. I can get behind that as an idea, and if so, I can see decent use out of Shaman's Ring, but still just really don't think Telk is a great item for her. Rather than that added move speed, I think 28% MS between Focus + Shaman's would work well with your other idea, protections, to create something that is versatile and gives you a bit more survivability than just possibly being able to run away if they don't CC you.

Again, my own opinion, and I've tried to keep an open and flexible mind, as shown by my 2nd comment. Figured you wouldn't mind the comment.

Note, I do recognize that you're stating it's up to the player to determine their preferred order. I accept that, but I was more interested in hearing YOUR opinion on that adjustment.

And both the system and I recognize this as a guide (with or without quotation marks)...you're giving direction and tips, not just a basic build, and the content is good.

Good review. I was thinking the same. You'd better get Sands first then pen boots at least if you're going Chronos early. And as you said, you'll get a hard time stacking Telkhnines, that's exactly was I was thinking, it doesn't belong here at all. And ofc Obsidian is a must. Well done sir. Dynasty, Celestial and Stone of Fal are also really good suggestions.

Branmuffin17 (221) | December 7, 2017 10:28am
Thanks, Peter.

I've been thinking more about this one...I think, a lot of times, I get a bit caught up in aligning everything with Conquest viability (unless otherwise stated). So I'm gonna continue some thought processes. I still really think intended game mode needs to be clarified by the guide creator.
  • Starting Shoes of Focus, THEN getting Sands of Time, is viable in an Arena setting. With base so close, it's safer getting full MS. It'll be very easy to get 800 gold for Sands, and at the price, it's an extremely functional way to quickly get your CDR higher.

  • Also in a teamfight setting with a god that has such easy, long-distance poke, higher ability use via Focus, instead of Shoes of the Magi, is okay...Magi really is meant for a slower mode like Conquest, in a setting where a bit of extra damage can mean making the enemy hide under tower/backing and forcing them to lose farm. Not saying it's not functional for all modes, just that Focus is just fine here.

  • But with 20% CDR so quickly, I see no need to blast up to 40% CDR. If you get Focus and Sands, it'll be more functional for your damage output to get some pen. Spear of Desolation is a better option next, in my opinion. 20 flat pen will hit hard against squishies, and it ALSO gives you CDR. 30% is PLENTY at this stage of the game. Chronos' Pendant isn't needed so much at that stage...it's a better idea if OP chose Shoes of the Magi, but much less needed with Focus. I don't see why you would look to FORCE yourself to get rid of a functional item like Sands so quickly because you'd overcap CDR. Optimize build order and just sell Sands later.

  • Obsidian Shard may not be needed all that much...depends on enemy team comp, but SHOULD be listed as at least an optional item. In Arena, it can be pretty common to see 4 squishies and 1 tank. I'd watch the enemy builds, and if they're not building protections, I might just skip over Shard for another item.

Sorry, I don't think I fully understand your question. It's focused on leveling the 1 over the 2, and filling in the 2 when you can no longer level the 1. Etc.

A normal order, prioritizing 1, then 2, then 3, and ult when possible, would look like this:

1, 2, 3, 1, U, 1, 1, 2, U, 1, 2, 2, U, 2, 3, 3, U, 3, 3, U

Sorry if it seems picky but I know when I first started Smite and didn't know what I was looking at (Which will be a decent chunk of people who look at guides, not all of course) I would have auto level on and copy the exact order that I was given. Just want the most out of guides on SF :)
