Common / Alternative Offense

Notes Divine Ruin may be necessary in some matches for Anti-Heal.

Obsidian Shard is the higher damage alternative to Charon's Coin.

Pythagorem's Piece is a decent lifesteal / penetration option to pair with Typhon's Fang in certain build paths.

Ethereal Staff can be picked up potentially into tankier comps and if you also need some extra health in your build.

Demonic Grip is good for some extra protection shredding, although harder to fit in a build path.

Hastened Ring isn't strongly statted and can be harder to fit in a build path, however the passive can sometimes get good usage in fights with the extra mobility for both helping to land more AAs you wouldn't hit otherwise and to act as a pseudo defensive option.

Bumba's Hammer is a strong starter upgrade for Chronos (lets him spam Time Rift / Stop Time constantly and keep Accelerate active), though let down a bit by it's weaker early pressure tier 1 starter.

Gilded Arrow is suitable for extra AA damage early game, though the lack of power reduces your early clear speed and poke damage with abilities, especially compared to Conduit Gem.

Common / Alternative Defense

Notes Mantle of Discord is a generally decent lategame anti-burst option to help you get your Rewind off / help survive heavy dive.

Magi's Cloak is situationally useful into heavier beads burning enemy comps / comps reliant on a single hard CC setup.

Winged Blade can be decent into slow heavy comps, the extra movement speed can not only be used to run away but also to chase or juke better while boxing.

Celestial Legion Helm can be considered if the enemy team has a lot of physical damage and/or you're going to be being targeted by a high burst physical jungler.

The Alternate Timeline can be considered to give you a chance to recover (if you aren't positioned too poorly) in a fight if you think you will be focused and bursted down, although the long cooldown is a heavy drawback. Can sometimes work better than Mantle of Discord if you think you'll be bursted before the passive procs.

Abilities

Abilities

Passive - Time Lord - Chronos becomes empowered as time flows around him. Every 1.5 minutes he gains a stack that increases his Magical Power. Stacks up to 25 times, stacks are permanent (Grants up to 125 Magical Power after 37.5 minutes).

This passive helps Chronos scale stronger into the lategame, with the extra power equivalent to having another full tier 3 item when fully stacked, but also can help with making you feel less punished damage wise for getting a defensive item in your build if needed.

Ability 1 - Time Rift - Chronos creates a rift in time, damaging all enemies in the area.

This ability is your primary wave clear and damaging poke ability, with the low cooldown you can use it often for lane harassment and poking enemies that out of position / that are easy targets due to being CC'ed (whether from ally CC or setup by your own Time Rift).

Ability 2 - Accelerate - Chronos accelerates himself over time, allowing him to move faster initially and gain speed over time. While active, his Attack Speed is increased. This ability also stops the Wheel of Time.

Section I: Heal 1.5% Max Health Per Second.
Section II: 100% Mana Refund On Abilities.
Section III: +25% Magical Power.
Section IV: +35% Magical Power Contribution to Basic Attacks.

The attack speed from this ability helps your auto attack dps, especially when paired with Section 4, while the mobility can be useful for rotating across the map, chasing, dodgding abilities / auto attacks, or to help retreat.

Section overview:

Although not too useful, especially once you have lifesteal online (unless there are no enemies around to lifesteal from), you can use the first section for health sustain if you need to regenerate lost health from being poked. Going a higher mana sustain starter ( Death's Toll / Sands of Time), can possibly let you gain more usage out of this section early game.

The second section of Accelerate helps to reduce his massive mana consumption in the early stages of the game until you have an item like Charon's Coin or Rod of Tahuti online to help with any mana problems, unless you went Death's Toll / Sands of Time (which means you can be a bit more lenient with your ability usage early game when not using Section 2).

I would heavily prioritise the fourth section (over the third) to deal incredible damage with his Auto Attacks - whether that's to enemy players, objectives or structures. It has generally higher damage potential than using the third section, though the third section can be used in burst focused builds to more easily one-shot kill squishies with a Stop Time / Time Rift combo, especially in scenarios where you don't think you'll be able to land auto attacks without putting yourself into a bad position.

Most of the time, you'll be using section 2 for early game wave clearing, and section 4 for mid to lategame dps.

Ability 3 - Stop Time - Shooting forward spinning gears of time, any enemies hit by Chronos' attack have their Attack Speed reduced and Ramp to a Stun, taking damage on the initial hit and again when they are stunned.

Although typically used to help wave clear with Time Rift, you'll often want to save it to either use it as a offensive tool to help box an enemy / lane opponent to help guarantee a hit from Time Rift and follow up auto attack damage, or the stun can simply be used to help for ganks and team setup. Otherwise, it is used as a defensive tool if being aggressed on or being ganked yourself.

Ultimate - Rewind - Chronos travels through time to where he was 8 seconds ago, gaining Health and Mana back to the values of that time. All of his Cooldowns are instantly reset as well.

Besides being a source of renewed health, mana, and ability cooldowns, Rewind is very effective for getting you out of sticky situations and possibly relocating you out of danger. While often used defensively, it can be used offensively to take advantage of the cooldown reset and/or to reposition closer to where an enemy may be retreating to depending on your prior positioning. The initial wind up will also make you CC immune, though in the case of high ping / lag you can sometimes be disrupted during the animation, though it's rare. Keep in mind you can still be bursted during the windup, so timing / positioning is crucial to getting a successful Rewind off.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths and Weaknesses
Pros:
  • Scales well into the mid to lategame, having high lategame damage
  • Higher auto attack damage and structure dps compared to most mages
  • Can flex between ADC and Mid
  • Often is a good lane duelist, provided you're not behind
  • Good at rotating with Accelerate
.
.
.
.
.
.
Cons:
  • Generally weak earlygame (especially in duo lane)
  • Can have a hard time getting Rewind off into heavy burst comps
  • Can struggle into enemies with lots of CC immunity
  • Can often be locked down by heavy slow comps without the assistance of Winged Blade or Heavenly Wings
  • Lacks a big teamfight AoE damage ultimate compared to many mid lane mages
.
.

Gameplay

Gameplay
  • General Tips: Your primary burst damage combo is to use Stop Time to guarantee (unless the enemy immunes the stun) follow up from Time Rift with as many auto attacks (usually between 1 to 3) as you can fit in as possible just before landing Time Rift.

As the incoming minion wave approaches, you can auto attack the melee minions to hold them back a bit as they approach so that they group closer to the archer minions, making it easier to hit and clear themm all with Time Rift.

With the extremely low CD, spam Time Rift for poke damage on enemy gods when the wave is not around. If poking them while the wave is around, you'll need to be wary of drawing minion aggro (also chances are the attempt could backfire and the incoming minion wave may end up having to go into your tower radius). Try not to spam it too much early game though or you will run out of mana quickly.

Remember to Ward around the Jungle areas to your Lane after your first trip back to the fountain (or subsequent trips if you do not have enough gold on the initial back / need the gold for a item power spike), if not through Wards then through your Vision Shard.

If you've been bursted to very low health and your relics are on cooldown but your ultimate is not, then consider using Stop Time on the enemy to stun them before you use Rewind so you are not killed during the windup.

  • Early Laning: Try avoid getting too aggressive early game, unless you've got a level advantage / map vision on enemy Jungler or some help in Lane (E.g. Your Support in Duo lane, or Jungler in Mid).

Avoid tanking the minion wave and use Time Rift to poke the enemy if you have already cleared the minion wave (but if there is not a easy kill opportunity, you should try prioritise farm if it is spawned, such as mid xp camps or duo lane harpies), though if you go a low sustain start, be conservative with your mana and avoid taking poke in lane, as otherwise you may have to back at an inconvenient time which could result in you losing waves to tower and/or be too late to contest any neutral farm that may be up, putting you behind.

If outclearing your opponent in lane, consider stealing their Buffs if you are not too low on health and mana and if you seem to be safe from ganking, otherwise farm safely in lane.

If facing the prospect of being outcleared and pressured in duo lane, then focus on clearing fast, farming passively during the laning phase and securing your own jungle side farm while contesting what neutral farm you can without too much risk (Purple/Red buff, Gold Fury Oracles, XP Harpies etc...). If behind, make sure to not only farm safely but also to Ward nearby jungle routes and try to split push when it is safe, but don't look for fights if you are underleveled.

As a late-game hyper carry, your early game is generally weak and you're especially vulnerable before you've got your ultimate.

Itemisation

Itemisation
  • Key Core Items: Telkhines Ring is core on Chronos due to the extra AA scaling it gives (can be seen as a Qin's Sais for magicals, but as a more general DPS item against all targets), scaling stronger as the game goes on, while Nimble Rod of Tahuti is core due to the attack speed glpyh that makes Rod of Tahuti an even stronger choice on any Magical ADC.

  • Starter Items: In Mid, you're mainly considering Conduit Gem for the extra clear pressure early game, with other starters such as Sands of Time being good but not as potent. In ADC, you're more often likely to box with auto attacks, which is where Gilded Arrow proves it's usefulness with it's flat basic attack damage (allowing Chronos to hit just as hard as hunters in the early game, without needing a high amount of power + Section 4 active) especially with the attack speed passive proc, and the bonus gold can help you recover slightly if you have fallen behind or to help push a lead further.

  • Penetration: Other than Nimble Rod of Tahuti which is core, most matches you're generally going to want 20%+ penetration by full build. Some examples may be:

Charon's Coin/ Obsidian Shard + Nimble Rod of Tahuti (+ another possible 10% pen option if desired),

or Pythagorem's Piece + Typhon's Fang + Nimble Rod of Tahuti (+ another possible 10% pen option if desired),

or Warlock's Staff + Typhon's Fang (assuming you have Spear of the Magus or/and Ring of Hecate to make use out of the passive) + Nimble Rod of Tahuti (+ another possible 10% pen option if desired),

or simply just Typhon's Fang (assuming you have Spear of the Magus or/and Ring of Hecate to make use out of the passive) and Nimble Rod of Tahuti.

Typhon's Fang in particular can also be considered almost core if you're going Pythagorem's Piece or Ring of Hecate in your build, and sometimes with Spear of the Magus - though not always, since there may be a situational item (e.g Divine Ruin) or cheaper power spike (e.g. Obsidian Shard) needed instead (Especially if you don't have that much lifesteal other than just Spear of the Magus).

As for the flat magical penetration options if it's being considered (depending on your role and planned build path), you'll generally go for Spear of the Magus (not only due to the passive, but due to the lifesteal from the item giving you bonus value to Typhon's Fang's passive). Spear of Desolation / Divine Ruin can also be considered if you're going a more burst focused build and/or are reliant upon to get Anti-Heal in the case of Divine Ruin, which may especially be the case when playing Chronos in Mid. Spear of Desolation's cooldown reduction from it's passive and base 10% CDR pairs also pairs well with Bumba's Hammer, so is more often seen on Chronos with that item.

  • Attack Speed: Other than the attack speed from Telkhines Ring which is core, and with Nimble Rod of Tahuti also providing some, you may optionally go for 1 other ring in your build (any more and the build will be inefficient to varying extents) if you want a little more attack speed. Ring of Hecate being the most likely due to it's solid base stats, early game boxing power spike (that still holds up lategame due to the percentage based debuff/buff), and obvious synergy with Typhon's Fang.

Demonic Grip could also be considered as a mid game attack speed spike for the extra protection shred outside of the 20%+ magical penetration (although a separate type of penetration) you should generally aim for, however the need for the protection reduction to be stacked is usually what makes it ignored compared to percent penetration - since percent penetration acts instantly, which helps for initial ability poking/burst without needing to auto attack beforehand and target swapping (relying on Demonic Grip's passive alone as a protection shred option hurts a bit when needing to engage another target, due to the time needed to get your dps to the necessary amount it should be). Not to mention that Demonic Grip passive does not work on towers/phoenixes, unlike percentage penetration.

Hastened Ring can be considered for it's passive (which situationally can get strong usage), however it's base stats are medicore for the cost, there are stronger power spikes from other items, and the passive itself has a cooldown, so it's usually not seen.

  • Defensive Options: Mantle of Discord is a generally decent lategame anti-burst option to help you get your Rewind off / help survive heavy dive.

Thank you for reading this and I hope you find it useful. Builds from a long time Chronos player (Wish he still had Basic Attack penalty removal on his 2.)

Hi, all is fine, but Build 1 lacks early to mid game penetration... all you have is +10 flat from boots which you sell later ofc, and obsidian shard which is not flat. You should replace bancrofts for Demonic Grip or keep Bancroft's Talon and replace Hastened Ring into Demonic Grip.

Kriega1 (143) | July 23, 2019 3:20am
Build 1 is getting changed anyway due to the price increase to hastened for next patch. But, the original build before was fine, at it was mainly aimed at focusing squishy targets until I got Obs Shard online. Besides, i've seen some mid lane players in conquest focus exclusively on power/flat pen on a mage build so they can 100-0 the enemy team's mid/carry/jungler despite the lesser damage output to tanks (and in my 1st build, again, I still list Obs Shard).

Just ringing in on this guide again real quick because I am now also using it as my starting point for using Chronos in Joust since I am getting back into that now as well. From what I have seen, most of the conquest guides I have used as a baseline for arena work a lot better in joust. I think that with maybe a bit of tinkering and the tools you have laid out with this guide that Chronos will be a really good flexible choice for me in that mode, provided I continue to progress with him. This is just basically a kudos post to you because I have really enjoyed playing him and received a lot of help from your information here.

In Joust i’ve seen Trelli Relli (GM Ranked Joust player - check their YouTube) go Soul gem or reaver early on Chronos. I’ve tried it and it’s decent. Start mage’s blessing, tiny trinket and pots, then go a build something like: pen boots, soul gem, soul reaver, demonic, obs shard, Telkhines/Tahuti

Kriega, I'm seeing Pythagorem's Piece being built frenquetly on Chronos recently, both in SPL and Ranked games. It's replacing Bancroft's Talon as the go-to lifesteal item. What do you think about this?

It’s a decent item but it’s not my preferred choice for an early game pickup. Most times I consider this item as a boots replacement. Of course, the item is cheaper than Bancrofts, offers a little bit of health/cdr and I believe offers higher lifesteal than Bancrofts unless your health is a certain percentage. But as for the actual power it offers it’s less than Bancrofts plus the passive getting good use from teammates isn’t certain.

Edit: On 2nd thought I tried it in a recent game and I quite like it with cdr boots and dynasty early. I updated the builds anyway.

Hey Kriega, I was looking at your tanky builds and for arena purposes what would you put as a suitable replacement for warlock's in arena? Something like Ethereal to give some health and some tanky utility with the health swap or just run with bancrofts in the 1 and boots in the two like the other builds you have and then follow the tanky builds as follows? Gem of Isolation maybe as well as an option there in that 2 spot?

You probably shouldn’t run him tanky in arena but I would go: start: warrior’s blessing and tiny trinket , Build: Bancrofts, cdr boots, Breastplate, void stone, winged blade, divine ruin. Or maybe pen boots, Celestial Helm, shoguns, Demonic, Witchblade, gem of iso/e-staff. Yeah these are some pretty wacky builds. Don’t recommend tanky Chronos in arena.

The only reason i ask, for situations like i had earlier, when i had locked in and no one went guardian/warrior. yeah, not something i was looking at wanting to run but maybe help a bit when no one chooses tank and i have already locked in.

Would you have any suggestions/modifications for building arena with him? I bought him yesterday because he is one of the few mages i liked just from initially viewing and i may actually try him out sooner than anticipated. Well put together guide. If my browser is not being wonky again you have my +1.

Start tier 2 Bancrofts. Build: Bancrofts, pen boots, demonic, Telkhines, hastened, obs Shard/Tahuti for AA-based. For ability based: Start: tier 2 Book Of Thoth, build: Book of Thoth, cdr/pen boots, deso, obs Shard, shamans , Tahuti

I was figuring in Arena, you could back if you were hurt. Rushing and picking spots for basic attack kills was what I was going for, hence the late Bancroft's.

Granted, this wasn't a very balanced match that I played with you, but my default if playing Chronos would be to build him like a normal carry.

Right now speed is OP, so I didn't mind going shoes, into the rings, into Bancroft late.

Shoes of Focus
Demonic Grip
Hastened Ring
Telkhines Ring
Bancroft's Talon
Situational

Only reason I got Celestial Legion Helm was because we were facing 4 physical.

But you could very easily build him more of a standard mage-type early and just nuke with your 1 a ton...transitioning to more basic attack function late. Here, I'd probably suggest something like this, and Kriega can suggest adjustments as necessary.

Shoes of the Magi
Chronos' Pendant
Bancroft's Talon
Demonic Grip
Hastened Ring
Telkhines Ring

also, considering that it looks like he is so auto attacked focused how you feel Polynomicon would fit into the end of that first build?

Man, quick response. Good on you, old chap. Thanks for laying that response out so quickly.

Also, i already love your first build idea. when i first started and was lvling Ymir and tinkering with Telkhines Ring I was really doing everything i could to justify having all three of those rings on him. I actually made some fun builds with 2 of the 3 in there on him but my noobier self at the time really lamented not fitting all 3 in.

No he's A tier (A+ if we're talking about Ranked, especially for his ADC). And I've already seen that tier list, also im not sure whether DM's tier list is for Ranked or SPL.

Edit: Mid: A, ADC: A+/S-, Solo: B+.

Probably ranked. SPL has a much smaller pool of players than ranked Conq.

Kriega, have you seen emilitoo playing Chronos today?
1
Kriega1 (143) | May 16, 2019 4:48pm
I did, and I saw him build Warlock's Staff, same as Joshy (Luminosity) did, which we haven't seen much of for his adc builds this season, meanwhile "Reddit Balance Squad" was saying warlocks needed a buff. Also Divios was building warlocks Hades too.

Vini_sds (13) | May 16, 2019 5:06pm
(I don't have experience with Chronos, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.)

I'm divided when it comes to Warlock's Staff. It makes sense when we keep in mind that Chronos is a lategame god due to his passive and itemization. However, doesn't it hurt his early game, making it harder?

I don't think Warlock's needs a buff, but they definitely could reduce the number of stacks required. 70 would be fair.

I don't think I ever build Warlock's on Hades solo, but I remember building it one time I played in mid.

I've been reading your guides and following the builds due to lack of knowledge but I see some of you saying Conquest and I find the builds viable in Arena without changing them majority of the time, I've also been successful with paticular builds because I change my play style towards the build if that makes any sense, all in all I found guys like yourself Boogie and others beneficial to anyone serious about learning Smite I've tried other sites and they SUCKED !!!!! Thanks and great job fellas.....

Oh, indeed at times they can still work in Arena, but if Arena was the focus, certain item choices would be more attractive, and others less attractive (e.g. Warlock's Staff is pretty bad in arena).

silentshell (5) | May 25, 2019 11:22am
Rahsaan7, I too, am pretty inexperienced still and only play arena currently and I can certainly agree with Kriega here. Pretty much any character i tried to build warlocks with in arena...it was terrible.

Anytime man! Happy to help, and welcome to the site. If you have specific questions, branmuffin17 is also a really good resource. Fountain of knowledge and a nice, approachable guy.

Kriega, how do YOU pronounce your name?

KREE-guh? Kree-eh-guh?

Boogie pronounces it the 2nd way, and it honestly drives me crazy.

Boog...

Kriega1 (143) | March 2, 2019 12:20am
"Kree-Guh" is the correct way - same as in the video. I've also heard it pronounced before as "Cry-Gah" but thats FakeNews.

Also im not sure what you have to do to intrepret Kriega as "Kree-eh-guh", you're literally inventing extra syllables.

Vini_sds (13) | March 2, 2019 8:41am
I always read “cry-eh-guh” :(

Ugh. You had to spam his guide's comment section with this nonsense? You couldn't take it into the group PM we made?

If you want me to sweeten the deal for Kriega, I can talk a bit more about you and some of your...leveling habits.
