Baron Samedi pulls the souls of the living towards his Coffin, becoming immune to Crowd Control and taking 50% reduced damage. Enemy gods within range are caught in a Vortex, dragging them towards the Coffin and take damage every .33s. Introduction

Welcome to my Smite Guide for the new God Baron Samedi! Baron has the ability to play as a Mage or Support, like Nu Wa and Aphrodite, because of his unique kit. Baron in the Mid lane has crazy sustain because of his self heal, and his early damage/waveclear is also very nice. He has the ability to really turn a teamfight with his ultimate, while also being able to heal his teammates. Remember, if you have any comments or suggestions, please leave a comment below!

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Has his own potion for you and your teammates
  • Great early game Damage/Waveclear
  • Has to ability to Support or play Mage, or even Hybrid
  • Great sustain
  • Hilarious jump animation :D

Cons
  • Your Vivid Gaze can take some time to get used to aiming
  • Need to build up Hysteria to really get full use out of your kit
  • No escapes/mobility

Items

Mage's Blessing is one of your starting items. Gives nice early Magic Damage, MP5, and when fully stacked, CDR.

Warlock's Staff is your rush item. Get it as soon as you can. You will need to start building its stacks for the great boost to Survivability and Damage.

Shoes of the Magi will give you good early penetration, which will allow you to go straight into Chronos' Pendant for the early CDR.

Chronos' Pendant is just your basic CDR mage item. If you can hold off on CDR, build it a bit later.

Spear of the Magus is a good pen item to go with after you finish up Chronos' Pendant. It's cheap and very effective with the amount of abilities you're able to cast, and how fast you're able to do it.

Rod of Asclepius gives you all the stats you require, and also pairs very well with Consign Spirits.

Mantle of Discord gives you both magic and physical armor as well as CDR. But the reason I would get this would be for the passive, which will stun enemies surrounding you, as well as giving you CC Immunity for 1s. This is very helpful for when you are playing against Gods like Ne Zha or Kali who are always all up on you. REMEMBER this is the situational slot. This can be replaced by any of the below items as you see fit.

Soul Reaver is built last and will help you get more burst damage if you need it.

Gem of Isolation adds nice Crowd Control Reduction, and will slow enemies that are hit by your abilities by 25%. Go ahead and build if you are playing against Gods who you can't catch up with.

Spear of Desolation can be built if you are playing against a rather tankier team. You would be stacking two penetration items with this and Spear of the Magus, which is sometimes necessary.

Divine Ruin is your go to item for when they have a lot of self healing on the enemy team. It will reduce enemies healing by 40% for 8 seconds when they are hit by your abilities. This includes life steal items and regenerations.

Bancroft's Talon is just for if you want some extra life steal yourself. Can't imagine you needing it, but hey, why not.

Spirit Robe is a really nice crowd control reduction item. When you are hit with Crow Control abilities, you will gain 15% more damage reduction. I'd build this when you are matched up against someone like Sobek who constantly is throwing you into his team.

Void Stone will give you some magic power as well as magical protection and health. But the passive will actually reduce enemies magical armor that are around you by 20. Build this when you are facing Gods like Hades or Hel because of them being short ranged mages. The aura from Void Stone is only useful at a close range.

Spectral Armor is built when you are fighting against crit based Gods. It reduces the amount crits can hit you for by 50%. Very helpful. It will also give Physical Protection, Mana, and CC Reduction.

Skills

Hysteria
Every time you land a basic attack/spell on an enemy, it will apply stacks of hysteria to the enemy. When the enemy gets to max hysteria, they take 25% more damage. On top of that, this passive allows all of your allies to buy Baron's Brew as well.

Vivid Gaze
This is what you will max first. It will be where a big portion of your damage is going to come from. Wherever your mouse is on the game is where the two skull beams will intersect, allowing you to aim the beams in different directions. If the enemy god is above 30 Hysteria and you hit them with this spell, their Power, Magic Power and Attack speed are lowered.
Applies up to 20 Hysteria.

Consign Spirits
Your AoE damaging ability that also heals you and your surrounding teammates. There is a delay once you cast this before it explodes though. If the enemy is above 30 Hysteria, the heal will also make you and your allies immune to slows, and increase your movement speed.

Wrap It Up
You throw a snake at your enemies that does damage over time, and slows them. If the enemy God is above 30 Hysteria the snake will also travel to other enemies that are too close to the original target after 1 second. This will slow them and eventually root them, and does all the damage over time instantly.
Applies up to 40 Hysteria.

Life of the Party
When casted, Baron jumps on top of a coffin becoming CC Immune and takes 50% less damage. You will begin casting a cone attack that pulls enemies to the coffin, dealing damage while being pulled. If they get to close to the coffin, they will be stunned, and will take a chunk of damage as well. If the target(s) are at 30 Hysteria or above, the pull strength is increased.
Applies up to 80 Hysteria.

Summary

Baron Samedi has a kit that really allows you to play him in multiple ways. Right now I only have the Standard Mage build, but am working on a Support build right now. Baron is very unique, and I enjoy playing him a whole lot. If you have any comments/suggestions/feedback, please leave a comment below.

Ok 1. This hasn't been updated since June 27th.
2. It's a mid lane build (and an outdated one at that).
3. Book of the Dead and Mantle of Discord should suffice in mid lane. (As you're building book of Thoth to go with book of the dead).

tbh you don't rally need a build he is ridiculously op in dmg health and stun no matter what

Gulfwulf (81) | June 28, 2018 9:29am
You always need a build. If you buy stuff willy-nilly, you're just limiting your effectiveness in fights.

This guy is just using hyperbole to indicate that he feels Baron is very OP.

I've been using this guide to practice Baron in Conquest and it's so nice. I clear people left and right.

Thank you!

Hi Rez (hurdy hur hur),

Some comments...
  • Like I said in Tlaloc's guide, I feel Rod of Asclepius isn't truly core. It's a great item for him, no doubt. The MS is great since he has no mobility, and his heal, when he does get it off, can be very strong for him and nearby teammates.

That said, I'd watch how the enemy is building, and consider team comp. In the case your team has other healers (self like Herc, or a support like Sylv), you're going to be more likely to face anti-heal. You can then take that one of two ways...get Asclep because you still need/want that healing and want to counter the anti-heal as much as possible, or bypass Asclep because forcing heal when it's going to see reduced function is not your preference.

  • If you then consider Asclepius to be situational and/or you don't build it quite as early, you can additionally change up some of your earlier items. You already get 10% CDR from Mage's Blessing, and you might consider a bit of earlier pen in Shoes of the Magi. You state that Shoes of Focus is needed for the mana also, but since you get Warlock's Staff online first, that already gives you a pretty hefty 400 mana (plus the Blessing's MP5 and your Baron's Brew).

  • If you THEN consider Shoes of the Magi as an option, after that, try rushing Chronos' Pendant if you'd like. Due to the passive, Chronos' CDR is way more powerful, and you can then spam your **** all day...great if you're already teaming up with others, so you can apply as much of your healing and debuffs as possible.

  • With the 5.9 nerf to Obsidian Shard, it's less appealing to me, unless facing a very tanky enemy comp. Considering also that 2 of his abilities provide ticking damage, Spear of the Magus seems like the more effective pen item. If you're winning fairly early in the game, you might also consider this before Asclep/Chronos.

  • Although he can output decent damage, he's not the burst mage others are. He's got a lot more utility, and so getting a 100% offensive item like Soul Reaver wouldn't be my preference. Using your abilities a lot for that utility to help get team kills is likely best, and with that in mind, going a bit more defensive, a la Mantle of Discord, seems like the better general option. I know you say Reaver is optional, and you do list Mantle as situational defense, but just throwing that out there, since your main example build uses Reaver.

  • Don't know if I'd consider Gem of Isolation to be one of his better options. It's not really about him catching up so much. Keep in mind his strengths. He has no mobility, so he's going to rely on hungry enemies trying to gank, or on his own teammates working with him. Those teammates will be the ones to help lock enemies down, so Gem, although potentially very functional, shouldn't be so much for YOU to catch up...but for you to help lock them down for team kills...IF your team is low on CC overall.

  • If you don't really like Bancroft's as an option (you say "can't imagine you needing it"), then why list it? Getting this in conjunction with Asclepius (if you still consider core) is just asking for anti-heal.

  • Due to his lack of escape, thinking Phantom Veil should also be a relic option, especially when facing an Odin and with your current preference to rely a decent amount on healing + Asclep.
Thoughts?

Does this work in Joust as well?
1
Rezneth (2) | June 26, 2018 12:42pm
yup! should work just fine in joust as well. Joust will give you a little bit more room to test out the situational items and see what fits you best.

Don't underestimate a good Ra player. He has, arguably, one of the best wave clears in the game.
