Start

Notes The standard start I use for support role. You don't need Mana Potions due the Guardian's Blessing passive (unless you cast unnecessary skills). Everything you need to stay enough time to get money to finish your shoes.

Consider make less potions and start with a tier 1 defense as Iron Mail, Druid Stone, Talisman (and others) if you want to get defenses as soon as possible instead Shoes.

Shoes Options

Notes You can choose between these shoes:
  • Shoes of Focus - The standard shoes that provides mana and CDR. Usually everything you need for a standard early game.

  • Shoes of the Magi - Higher damage shoes due the high early power and minor lifesteal for sustain. Usually built when you are looking for strong early pressure taking advantage of it to maybe snowball.

  • Reinforced Shoes - High protections early game. Usually bought when you are behind and need to protect yourself/stacking Gauntlet of Thebes right after the boots. Also the most recommended boots when you get a duo with tick damage, like Heimdallr + Bacchus

  • Traveler's Shoes - High movespeed. Usually bought when you need to rotate frequently and get back to your lane asap.

Skills Combos

Wave Clear (For Solo Only)/Poking your enemy

The combo to clear the minions wave. Usually more than enough to clear the wave and it also provides an Insta clear at end of early/mid game until the late game. Can also be used to poke your enemy. First you reduce the protections with Ghastly Breath and put all heads ready for the next step, then you apply the (true) damage from Paralyzing Spit.

Do not use this combo for wave clear as support or you will do the last hit on minions and wouldn't be able to stack your blessing/will make your ADC suffer.

Wave Boost (Support)

This is what you will use to help your ADC clear the wave. This is usually more than enough. If you can, try to hit the wave and your enemy with this skill.

Peel to Kill (Surprise)

This is what you will use to prepare an enemy to die. This combo will bring the enemy to the position you've marked, remove his magical protections and stun it up to 2 secs (If you hit everything) and due the blink, enemies usually don't have coordination/time to avoid it putting them in a situation "Or you use Purification Beads or you die"

Peel to Kill (Normal)

This is what you will use to prepare an enemy to die. This combo will bring the enemy to the position you've marked, remove his magical protections and stun it up to 2 secs (If you hit everything). This can put the enemy in a situation "Or you use Purification Beads or you die" but they will see you coming so I recommend you use this if you somehow get the enemy distracted or if they already used their escape or beads.

Killing an enemy (alone, recommended for solo)

You will have to poke your enemy and when he is low life, you go and cast this combo to get a kill.

How to play

Early game
  • (For support role only) The art of support: As the name suggest you are a Support which means you have to help other people, mainly the ADC, your partner-in-lane. Avoid farm alone, kill the wave minions of your ADC, getting the last hit of anything (mainly minions wave) and try don't get the kill, give it to your ADC. Remember that although you are important, supports CANNOT CARRY the game late game, but ADCs can, so help your ADC get bigger as soon as possible.

  • Watch you Health and Mana closely: Watch closely your health and mana bar. Cerb without mana is nothing and with a low health bar is an easy target at early game. Don't try to force, if you see yourself without sustain (health/mana) return base. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

  • Be careful with the mini-gods...I mean minions: Early fights usually happens with minions around. When you attack the enemy god, their minions turn to you and start to hit you. Be careful. Minions at early game are almost like gods and can do more damage than the enemy god (mainly the ranged ones) so be careful fighting around enemy minions, also you can use this tactic in your favor, trying to force the enemy fight near your minions.

  • Be aggressive: At early game you do a lot of damage (combining Ghastly Breath followed by a certain Paralyzing Spit) so use it at your advantage. You can probably force your enemy go to base and if he is squishy you can even get a kill!!!

  • Be careful attacking the enemy tower: Different from Ratatoskr that can get out of any situation just by using Through the Cosmos, you can't do it. If the enemy get you inside his tower you are at a serious risk. Just attack the tower if you know that is safe to do so.

  • Never dive a tower at early game: Diving a tower at early game is a difficult task without defenses. NO MATTER WHAT EASY THE KILL IS, DON'T GO.There are high chances of dying in the process and even die without the kill. A tower shot is good part of your HP at early game so be careful, remember that you are really slow.
Mid game
  • Your rotations are important: As soon as possible (when you destroy the enemy tower) start to rotate and gank other lanes. Remember: Your ultimate is so powerful and useful so don't be afraid of use it in teamfights/to burn enemy beads. If support you can start to rotate early, as soon as you feel you little baby...I mean ADC is capable to stay alive alone.

  • Invades: Invade is the tactic of try to steal farms of the enemies such as buff and jungle camps. You can easily do it and mainly if you have cooldown you can try do this. Remember that your lane is priority so invades are only possible after clear you wave just because the wave gives much more XP and gold. Your priority to invade must be the enemy blue buff. A lot of characters are mana hungry and controlling it can be a nice way to win the lane/force your enemy retreat or play safer. You can risk yourself and go to steal other camps like the enemy speed, but be careful to don't die ;) .

  • Help your teammates with their objectives: Although you are not a carry, you can really force enemies retreat play safer and it can be helpful to your allies destroy their objectives.

  • Diving towers: Dives are possible now are possible now that you have physical defenses. Try to poke your enemy before the dive then you just go and finish the job.

  • Combining skills and Defending Objectives: Try to combo your skills with your teammates to defend/attack objectives such as Gold Fury. Use Blink Rune + Stygian Torment to land into the battle surprising the enemies.
Late game
  • Time to Group up: At late game group up with your team. Stay ahead and try to protect them. Although you are a tank walk alone late game is a big invite to the enemy team kill you.

  • Tanking: At late game be careful tanking. You can take a good amount of damage and capable to tank entire towers or phoenixes, however you can't heal yourself easily so be careful to don't tank it and die right after.

  • Focus the Squishy targets: You usually can still have damage and still very tank, so squishy targets, although they have a good damage, probably will suffer in your hands since you do a considerable damage and do not take much damage (mainly with bruiser builds).

  • Be the frontline: Stay ahead of your team to start the fights and try to tank as much as possible for them get kills.

  • Don't forget the objectives: Firegiant and gold fury are important objectives that can be really important late game so don't forget to do them asap. Also, don't forget to call your teammates to attack the titan/phoenixes/towers when it is possible.

Final Considerations

"Who's a good boy? I'ma a good boy!!!" - Pup Patrol Cerberus

Art by Paulo-Namikaze via DeviantArt

My conclusion is that Cerb is working very good at solo lane (An A to A+ solo laner), and still a good character at support (an A to A+ support) and can be a very fun character to play in both roles.

Following the quick guide I posted here you will do a nice job with him in both roles.

Perhaps it's just me but I like Gem of Isolation on Cerberus due to the tick damage on his Ghastly Breath, which already slows, and it gives you some extra control since the stun is relatively difficult to confirm.

Big Damage (37) | March 8, 2021 8:41am
It's nice but expensive and other item choices are just better to round out a build, Ethereal Staff is just a waaay better option.

Big Damage (37) | September 4, 2020 6:51am
I would sell Stone of Binding after replacing Shoes of Focus.

xmysterionz (71) | September 4, 2020 7:45am
Why would you do it? Does stone have that much relevancy late game?
1
Kriega1 (143) | September 4, 2020 7:55am
I think either way is fine, can also prioritise upgrading relics first also.

What relics would you recommend? I know shell and reflect are the common ones but I see blink on him every so often for his ult? Is that a thing?
1
xmysterionz (71) | September 4, 2020 5:26am
I like Shell early game 'cause you are already very offensive and may get in trouble easily and Shell can really save your life. 2nd Relic, 99% of the times I do think it's the best idea. Relic Dagger + Blink Rune allows you to execute a surprise combo very often and can really get some people off guard.

S7evin424 (2) | September 6, 2020 4:07am
Ah ok thanks. Maybe I'll try out blink ult after learning him a little better.

Yes blink is a very common relic on him

I know I'm totally new to this game as well as this God But just wanted to mention that I use a slight variation of your standard solo build in arena as my main build and seems to work pretty well for my playstyle which is overly aggressive to say the least so thanks. Upvote

Just a question for people who are more experienced playing Cerberus; i know this guide says to max the 2, but should i max it over the 1? I know awhile back people maxed the one, but the 2 got a buff to protection shredding. Should i still max the 2 over 1? (i'm talking about in any gamemode really, not just conquest)
1
Branmuffin17 (394) | July 29, 2020 12:35am
I'd say there are a few things to think about when choosing to prioritize the 1 or 2. Both have good damage potential, and both have similar CD.

Paralyzing Spit features:
  • Goes through walls
  • Is burst damage
  • Has a slight increase in stun duration per level
  • Requires activation or multiple basics to awaken all heads for the spit
  • Can be easy to miss hitting all 4 for the stun
Ghastly Breath features:
  • Provides increasing protection shred per level
  • Provides increasing slow per level
  • Easy to hit 1 or more enemies in a generous cone
  • Since it is a channeled ability, can be easily interrupted by knockups, silences, stuns, etc.
Overall though, I'd say it absolutely depends if you're playing Conquest, at least the way I see it. In Conq, you typically want to go with the easier to confirm damage, which would be Ghastly. That said, if the enemy can interrupt it, they'll probably hold their ability to do just that, so it would then be better to prioritize Spit first.

In teamfight modes, any of your teammates will gain increased damage due to your protection shred. Even if you can be interrupted, you can usually get at least a couple of ticks off before they react. And of course, you'd also want to try to play around that, and use Ghastly when you see those abilities being used so you can get full effect.

Your other option is to prioritize Ghastly early, but stop before max level and switch over to Spit and max that before finishing Ghastly. This might actually be good early, as getting say 3 points into Ghastly and getting all stacks on a squishy god would probably get you (and teammates) close to true damage.

Overall, I'd say it's okay either way.

Im starting to really like Charon's Coin on Cerberus. If you can afford a power a boost its usually my go-to for the pen%/hp5/movement. Surprised i didnt see it listed any reason why?
1
Kriega1 (143) | July 13, 2020 4:13am
Because it's trash on him. You want a hybrid/damage option? You have Ethereal Staff, Soul Reaver, both high power boots early game, stone of binding, Divine Ruin, Deso, and next patch you can add Magus as an option.

As a lone percent pen item (or simply just damage), Reaver > Charon's Coin, against both tanks and squishies.

When you're considering building an average power, high-ish percent pen item like Charon's Coin on a tank, you need to seriously re-evaluate how you build.

Not to mention, you don't build full power on Cerberus, which would get more use out of Charon's against tanks. Still, the passive from Reaver + extra power combined will outclass the extra 10% pen from Charon's. Charon's (or Shard) is more of a complement to typically go alongside Reaver (in a Burst Mage build).

Is lotus crown against a physical healer actually worth the pick up? Does it proc on the passive or just on his 3?
1
Kriega1 (143) | May 19, 2020 2:51am
No it’s not worth the pickup, he cannot provide the Lotus passive to teammates. Tyrannical isn’t good either.
1
xmysterionz (71) | May 19, 2020 12:15pm
It's 80 physical protection all the time since even pots will proc it. Also, Both Jade And Tyrannical are in the same spot at my view right now, so no difference for me. Celestial Helm may be a god option but is easily countered by tick damage.

Procs on passive, so it procs literally with ANY healing, even pots.

I have mostly been doing pretty well with Cerebus in arena(only place i play) and i can't remember whose it was, but I modified from a conquest guide that had Tyrannical Plate Helm as core and I have had mostly positive result using that item in my builds. stats for smite is currently under maintenance so I can't show exactly how i've been doing and smiteguru has been completely unreliable in updating with everything going on or i'd give a bit more input into how i've been doing. I will give a few build variations i've used that have mostly worked well for me there.

Edit: stats for smite finally came up for me.
winrate 75% 18/6, kda 3.52, KD 1.64, kills 202, assists 461 deaths 123. just started playing him this season.

Shoes of Focus Void Stone Tyrannical Plate Helm Pridwen Pythagorem's Piece Ethereal Staff(have also gone Ethereal Staff Bancroft's Talon in the last 2 spots and have also gone Gem of Isolation and Ethereal Staff at 5 and 6) have sold boots when able and bought Rod of Tahuti. Gulfwulf (81) | March 16, 2019 12:21am
CDR, maybe Gem of Isolation (for the breath), Horrific Emblem/ Heavenly Wings. It really depends upon the matchup and what your assassins need: do they need help chasing? The slows/haste will help. Do they need someone to CC their target? CDR. Do they need someone to peel/block? Protections and health. Because Cerberus has a good bit of CC in his kit (all but one of his abilities applies some type of CC), I'd get an early Stone of Binding right after boots and keep it until/unless I needed something else.
1
DownToEarth (7) | March 16, 2019 1:22am
It's usually a focus on slows for me with maybe an item for CDR, so that helps thanks.

How does Shoes of Focus, Stone of Binding, Gem of Iso, Thebes, Void Stone, and Mantle of Discord sound?

Yep. I'm doing (at least trying to) a deep revision on my guides until the contest ends so all my guides would be ok with the rules. (However I doubt they will win, EXCEPT Love, find your mark!)

It would need to be updated first.

I wouldn't get Breastplate of Valor in the Support build, but Spirit Robe instead. I'm also not a fan of Pestilence being recommended 100% of the time, since it's a counter item and Cerberus already counters healing with his passive. I'd replace Pest with Gem of Isolation.

I'd also put Gem of Iso in the recommended and agressive builds for Solo.

I know the BoV has controversial opinions but Cerb definitively needs the cooldown (he has VERY LONG COOLDOWNS). His skills are REALLY useful for the team and you will need them asap.

About Pestilence, it brings to you something to potencialize even more your passive canceling a very good part of enemy healing (includes the HP5/potions and of course the lifesteal). So this combo counter a lot of characters that build lifesteal, usually the ADC and a big part of the mages. So I guess generically talking, it is a good item to be built in mid/late game for him.

Gem of Isolation is not missing. It is there in both roles as an offensive option in both cases.

You can get CDR with more useful items, like Shoes of Focus, Spirit Robe and Mantle of Discord, and maybe even Genji's Guard if you want to get 40% without Potion of Magical Might. I don't know, I REALLY hate BoV in support builds.

I know Gem of Iso is listed, but I meant you should put it in the listed builds, not in the alternative items :p
