God Introduction

Kukulkan is an excellent mage for beginning players due to his simplicity and low cost in terms of Favor. In Conquest, Kukulkan is a viable pick for the Mid lane. As a mage, he provides not only immense burst damage, but also has good zoning, objective shred and objective secure.

Build Explanation

Starting Build

Soul Trap is an excellent tier 2 item to start with as Kukulkan since it allows you to build into Book of Thoth, a core item, sooner. With this item, Kukulkan will have more magical power (65 magical power from Soul Trap + 21 magical power from his passive = 86 magical power) than any other mage due to his Power of the Wind Jewel passive. 2 Mana Potions are built as he will have mana sustain problems since he has no form of sustain from his starting build. You shouldn't need Health Potions or Multi Potions provided you aren't taking unnecessary fights or poke early on. But if you feel that you need the health sustain, you can build into Health or Multi Potions.

Other starter options exist if you think that this option is not for you. Soul Stone is a good option, granting him extra magical power from the item's passive, and some mana sustain. Sands of Time is another option with mana sustain and 10% CDR. Bumba's Mask and Soul Reliquary are secondary items for your starting build- the former grants you generous sustain for killing jungle monsters which will be frequent and extra jungle camp clear. The latter allows you to build into Book of Thoth sooner.

Core Build

Book of Thoth is a very powerful item on Kukulkan, not only offering mana which is helpful for his own sake and for his passive, but also for the immense amount of magical power that it grants. To put into perspective how this item is very valuable on this god, this item at full stacks and at level 20, will grant you 161 magical power. Now add your passive into this and you will get 102 bonus magical power, totaling 263 magical power from one item. That is insane!

Shoes of Focus will be built to further exploit his passive with the mana, and the cooldown reduction will ensure that he will be able to apply even more pressure on his opponents by having his abilities up more often.

Spear of Desolation is a staple mage item for a very good reason. It provides not only a good amount of magical power, but it also grants a high amount of flat penetration, which allows mages to deal high damage. Spear of Desolation additionally grants 10% cooldown reduction, which is a nice bonus, plus it also has its own passive that reduces your cooldowns on a kill or assist.

Obsidian Shard is the best penetration item for mages and Kukulkan is no exception. You may say "what about Spear of the Magus" and while Kukulkan may be able to stack it easily with Whirlwhind, that makes him very reliant on Whirlwind, as that will be where the majority of Kukulkan's penetration lies, and without it, Kukulkan's abilities will deal much less damage than they would originally, especially against tanky gods such as warriors and guardians.

Rod of Tahuti is such a great item for mages, and is a must-build for any damage focused mage. The stats from the item itself makes it strong, but mostly the passive is what gives it a lot of appeal. Increasing your total magical power by 25% is huge.

Situational Items

Polynomicon is an excellent item for Kukulkan, granting him extra burst potential with his Zephyr + Basic Attack combo, which can heavily chunk mages, assassins, and hunters. Most Kukulkan players will opt for this item earlier, but it is better to build this later, as your core items are more important to build earlier.

Gem of Isolation is another great item for Kukukan, serving a different purpose than the other situational items. In exchange for more damage you would obtain from other options, Gem of Isolation provides Kukulkan with a strong slow on all of his damaging abilities. This slow can be very helpful in locking down your enemies with Zephyr, or containing them for longer within Whirlwind. It also provides a bit of health and crowd control reduction, which will increase your survivability.

Soul Reaver can be another option if you value the passive, which is helpful versus tanky gods such as guardians and warriors.

Chronos' Pendant is another option if you want to continously cast spells to pressure your opponents. With this item you'll reach the maximum cooldown reduction limit, which is 40%, with 20% from Chronos' Pendant and you'll already have 10% from Shoes of Focus, and 10% from Spear of Desolation. Take into account Spear of Desolation's passive and Chronos' Pendant's passive, and you'll be able to rapidly cast abilities, one after another in quick succession.

Spear of the Magus is an alternate option for Obsidian Shard or can even be a 6th item, if you are against a very tanky team.

Ethereal Staff can be a good alternative if you wish to counter enemies with high health, while having nice stats such as health and crowd control reduction, and don't want to invest into the expensive Soul Reaver.

Shaman's Ring is a cheap boost to your damage, which can be helpful, plus it has movement speed.

Pythagorem's Piece is an excellent utility item, granting generous stats not only to you, but also stats for any nearby teammates.

Book of the Dead is a great but expensive item that grants you survivability from the health, and the health shield, while also granting you with a lot of magical power.

Divine Ruin is the best item for countering healing and sustain, that is available for mages. If you see a god with strong self or team healing such as Hercules or Hel, consider building this item. You should not worry about "losing out on damage" because as long as you build your core items, you should still have high damage output, plus Divine Ruin has 10 penetration on it and some magical power, which also helps in the damage department.

Stone of Fal is a situational defensive item for mages, and should be bought against high burst damage mages such as Nox, Scylla, Ra, and Thoth, preventing you from being "one shot" from their ultimates and combos. If you don't consider such mages to be a threat to you, you can look for another item.

Tips and Tricks

If you're having trouble landing Whirlwind, try to land Zephyr first. The slow will help confirm at least one tick of Whirlwind, assuming that your enemies don't have their escape abilities up. The same is true if you're having trouble landing Spirit of the Nine Winds, without any setup.

In gamemodes with chokepoints and close quarter areas, you can use Whirlwind to zone enemies away from those areas, and reduce their walking space. If they take the risk and walk through Whirlwind, you can simply cast Zephyr at them, to slow them heavily, and forcing them to take additional damage from Whirlwind than they would originally. You can also fire Spirit of the Nine Winds in close quarter areas to have a greater chance at landing it on an unaware enemy.

If there is a god such as an assassin very close to you, you can cast Whirlwind at your feet, to confirm several ticks of it, and retaliate with Zephyr.

If need be, you can cast Spirit of the Nine Winds, if there is any enemies directly behind you. The targeter of your ultimate is very long, and even hits enemies behind you.

You do not need to fully level up Whirlwind to clear minion waves well. 4 points at maximum is enough to fully clear minions, but you can even get by with only 3 points into Whirlwind. And since you will save 1-2 skill points from Whirlwind, you can spend your points onto your other abilities.

Obsidian Shard doesn't stack, unless you were talking about spear of the magi. IMO lifesteal should be core
