Data-Driven Building

Rather than a traditional "I know best" build guide, I decided to take a data driven approach and test existing builds item by item in Jungle Practice with a lvl 1 turret hitting the Odin bot with 100 protections as I incrementally add to the build, recording the results in Google Sheets and graphing the resulting damage build-up over time including some other relevant information like anti-heal, health, mana, mp5, movement speed, and CDR, so the graph will show the trade-offs of how quickly each build gets you online in different aspects.

Google Sheets Document

I'll test any Vulcan builds that get updated to the latest patch and any builds you guys post in the comments, so share yours if you think it's better than what's tested here so far.

This data doesn't go over situational items, it's meant to be a reference for comparison and extrapolation, not to copy builds exactly.

Results

Remember to look at the Pros : Cons section below for comparisons involving utility: Not all of a build's value can be put on a graph.

Damage values meant for comparison, not scaled by increasing player or ability level.

While this is a way to approach item building I don't think the builds will help in a real game. your data does provide a power curve but does not factor in a natural game progression. You only noted 1 discrepancy that being the stacking item. Still, there are way too many factors you left out.

First, even though you mention it having a weird progression in the calculations, during the game depending on the game phase (or game mode) you stack your items at a different speed.

My biggest problem with your data generation is going to have to be your static 100 prot Odin bot. While a bruiser or tank the damage would be accurate for a squishy it won't. The reason for this is how the damage mitigation has diminishing returns (as in removing 15 prot from 100 prot provides less damage than 15 prot from 30). So pen items can potentially be influenced negatively or positively depending on the target.

Also if you ask me a lot of vulcans damage comes from his backoff meatball combo, which does proc item effects. compared to the turret.

If I was more awake etc. I could probably find more things that are super different between practical and theoretical things. but atm I don't really think the damage numbers are in any way shape or form accurate

Pretty sure tanks/bruisers would have a lot more than 100 prots if we're including base stats.

yes that was why I ended it with that it can negatively view someones damage or positively.
I am quite tired today so I probably messed up some more in the comment

These concepts should be considered at 50 (squishy), 100 (light bruiser), 150 (heavy bruiser), 200 (full tank). Yes, full tanks can pretty easily have over 200 prots (especially phys), but those prots start becoming less impactful the higher you go.

FYI, base stats at level 20 are 48 magical prots and typically around 60-80 for physical prots.

Pretty cool idea for theory crafting and efficiency calculations. You could consider adding a separate field for total gold cost per build and maybe item timings based on average GPM for Conquest?

Just a thought, I'm not very experienced yet but that might be cool to have to better time your items.

This is good data, but there's a bunch of stuff that isn't being considered (Correct me if I'm wrong)
-Your lane opponent. How hard does he counter you? How hard do you counter him?
-Power curve. Some items take longer to come online than others. For example, crits vs. qin's sais.
You need to build 2 crit items or maybe stack Rage before it's fully reliable
-Team composition. How well can your team mates set up for you? Example: Ares into Vulcan ult.

@Devampi is really good with this kind of stuff. So I'll let him handle further feedback.

I will check back at this after work. I don't have the time during my break right now. But yes there are some considerations missing.

Book of Thoth is built a bit late; generally you want it 1st or 2nd item so you can stack it ASAP to get the most benefit out of it. I can't really comment on whether or not it's still viable, but I do know it's an early game item.

I hope this is just meant to be for testing purposes because none of these builds are good in practice.

So link or submit or comment a good one. I dont know the patch meta, and there's only one updated Vulcan build posted so far, which is included here. The other two were me testing.

For current patch:

Shoes of Focus > Deso > Divine > Reaver > Shard/Charon's > last 2 items (and selling boots) from: Tahuti, Myrddin, Chronos' Pendant, Ethereal Staff, Pythags.

Can also go Shoes of Focus > Doom Orb > Deso > Reaver > Shard > last 2 items (and selling boots) from: Tahuti, Myrddin, Chronos' Pendant, Ethereal Staff, Pythags.

Next patch you're gonna see more Magus (likely instead of deso, or we might see triple flat pen builds) being built likely.

Starter being Mage's Blessing, Magic Focus or Lost Artifact and pots.

Also Gem of Iso isn't good on Vulcan, he doesen't have any DoT abilities and his turret does not proc item effects.
