Bastet Build

Start

Notes Bumba's Dagger is the best jungle starter item right now, it’s also cheap enough so you can get Combat Boots.

Starting Combat Boots and forgoing any consumables is the more popular start this season which leads to an earlier power spike.

Alternative Start

Notes Bumba's Dagger is the best jungle starter item right now. Pair this with a Morningstar for early power.

Hand of the Gods speeds up your start and helps you contest mid faster.

Multi Potion is my prefered start, however you may select whichever potions suit you best.

Core Items

Notes Warrior Tabi are the boots that Bastet uses best.

Transcendence is Bastet's core item. It gives her insane amounts of power, which works with her high ability scaling.

Heartseeker is similar in that it gives her crazy damage, however it is not as powerful and is not to be built until later in the game.

Suggested Items

Notes Brawler's Beat Stick is NECESSARY when facing an enemy team of healers. By not building anti-heal into a healing team, you are crippling your team's ability to win extended fights.

The Crusher The Crusher is a solid item in most cases, but will be replaced by Brawler's Beat Stick against healing teams.

Shifter's Shield This item is incredibly strong right now, which is partially why hybrid bruiser builds are strong.

Additional Options

Notes Hydra's Lament is a personal favorite jungle item, but it's not suited for everyone, nor is it super hot in the meta. It's still a solid pick-up.

The Sledge is no longer the powerhouse that it was in Season 7. It's still viable, but I would stick to the regular build.

Ancile is another hybrid item that is available but just not as good as Shifter's Shield. Against a team that has overwhelming magical presence, this is a good option but I would stick with the regular build.

Bloodforge is a high power item that is very situational. If you are fed or want to get more aggressive, this is a great option, but will not see the field in an average game.

Titan’s Bane is an item I wasn’t super fond of last season because your goal as an assassin was to jump onto the enemy carry and mid-laner. But now that Sentinel’s Embrace is very strong, these backliners will have a lot more protections being given to them so having percentage penetration can be useful. I wouldn’t really buy this if the opposing support isn’t building protection sharing items.

Mantle of Discord and Spirit Robe are both situational but still viable. They lack power which Bastet desires.

Example Build

Notes Example Build
This is the go-to build for Bastet when the opponents have little to no healing.

Bumba's Hammer is the preferred starter upgrade because of its decent stats and passive.

Transcendence gives Bastet her maximum damage output.

Warrior Tabi is the best option for boots.

The Crusher, while not having a high power stat like the other items, deals damage over time based on your power. With the full build, this is adding an extra 60 damage to each ability. Make sure to buy Brawler’s Beat Stick when against healing.

Shifter's Shield is a really strong hybrid item at the moment. It provides either 60 power or a really chunky amount of protections.

Heartseeker is very expensive but rounds out the build to keep up in the late-game.

Relics

Notes Blink Rune is the go to for most Assassins in the jungle, but is not necessary on Bastet at the start. It is still a very strong relic on her and opens up even more mind games.

However, when facing teams with lots of CC, you'll want to build Purification Beads first. Because Blink is not fundamental, going Beads is useful.

Aegis Amulet can be used against teams with little CC and high burst damage.

Horrific Emblem is a very niche option in the jungle, but against comps with high mobility, it may be worth considering.

Magic Shell is another niche second relic choice that works well against teams that have multiple auto attackers.

Bastet's Skill Order Notes Razor Whip is Bastet's best clear and damage option. Start by leveling this first.

Then, get Ensnaring Claw. It helps with early ganks and CC.

Finally, unlock Pounce.

Then, as we level up, we are prioritizing Guardians of Bast, Razor Whip, Pounce, and Ensnaring Claw.

Remember to skip an unlock at level 8 to finish leveling Razor Whip and Guardians of Bast at level 9. More information is provided later.

Introduction

Nyaa~!
Hiya, I'm puppeht (PC IGN - puhppeht), I'm a Smite lover and jungle main. Additionally, I'm a degenerate, which is why I'm writing a guide to help you play Bastet.

Bastet
Assassin
Goddess of Cats

Bastet is an assassin who sees most of her time in the jungle role. She is not very popular but is actually very good right now. She has some very unique abilities too. Let's cover the basics.

Stats

General
Health: 415 (+80)
Mana: 230 (+39)
Speed: 375 (+0)
Range: 12 (+0)
Attack/Sec: 1 (+1.98%)
Regen
HP5: 9 (+0.72)
MP5: 4.4 (+0.25)
Protection
Magical: 30 (+0.9)
Physical: 12 (+2.9)
Basic Attack
Damage: 37 (+2.21)(+100% of Physical Power)
Progression: 1/.7/1.3x damage

.
.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:
  • High scaling
  • High mobility
  • High burst damage
  • Strong mid-game
.
Cons:
  • Very squishy
  • Weak passive
  • Countered by long duration CC
  • Mediocre farm

Abilities

- Passive - Tracking Scent
Tracking Scent is a controversial ability due to its inconsistency, situational use cases, and lack of synergy with the rest of the kit. This passive will almost never be used, because you're a burst character and will likely kill your targets too quickly for this to come into effect. In the event that you actually use it, it is a situation movement speed buff that lasts for 3 seconds.

- 1 - Pounce
Pounce is Bastet's signature ability. It is a leap which deals damage, but can also be recasted to jump back to your previous position within 4 seconds of use. Bastet will also move faster after returning. It is not only a good escape, but a high damage ability with 100% scaling. Additionally, it is a good counter-chase tool, as if your opponent jumps over a wall to follow you, you can just jump back over. We max this second instead of Ensnaring Claw because it helps significantly with damage output.

- 2 - Razor Whip
Razor Whip is Bastet's main jungle clear ability and damage option. It swipes left to right applying a bleed to enemies dealing damage every second for 4 seconds. This ability also has 100% scaling. However, because it is a bleed, it will deal damage over time, rarely leading to a postmortem kill and a sad Bastet player. On the contrary, it will still deal damage if the opponent uses Aegis Amulet.

- 3 - Ensnaring Claw
Ensnaring Claw is your only CC option, and the weakest of your abilities. The cat's often disappointing AI in addition to being a difficult ability for little reward makes it a subpar ability. It is, however, a decent kill secure and root. This is usually the combo opener as well. Something neat is that the cats do take tower and monster aggro, which is generally useless but has potential for a small play. The root is useful for early ganks as well, which is why I suggest unlocking it at level 2. It doesn’t have great damage though so just take note.

- 4 - Guardians of Bast
Guardians of Bast is... one of the more unique yet disappointing ultimates in Smite. This is Bastet's second ultimate and is predicted to be replaced sometime this year. Bastet summons cats which increase the damage of her other abilities as well as launching extra cats with Ensnaring Claw. The issue with the ultimate is that a large portion of Bastet's damage comes from having this ultimate online, which makes fighting without it feel useless. Her Ensnaring Claw ability also launches extra cats.

Bastet’s combos usually start with Guardians of Bast. It lasts 12 seconds so you’ll usually get a full run of every ability and then 1 or 2 more if you have high cooldown reduction. You’ll probably want to use Ensnaring Claw to root your enemy and let you get on top of them. Then, hit a Razor Whip for your big damage. Use Pounce to clean it up. Then, if you’re in danger, jump back.

Itemization

Itemization

- Bumba's Dagger
Bumba's Dagger is the go-to item for jungle right now. It provides mana sustain which helps keep you farming. It also has a great upgrade in Bumba's Hammer. The only issue is that it does not provide power.

- Warrior Tabi
Warrior Tabi is the better movement speed option for Bastet because it provides 40 power, and Bastet doesn't really benefit from the attack speed of Ninja's Tabi.

- Transcendence
Transcendence is a core item for Bastet because not only does it cover your mana hunger, but gives insane amounts of power which works well on her 100% scaling abilities. It gives 100 power at level 20, which no other physical item can provide.

- Heartseeker
Heartseeker is a late-game item which grants huge damage to Bastet. It also has a little bonus power with Transcendence.

- Brawler's Beat Stick
Brawler's Beat Stick is a must-buy when facing a team with healing. Healing is very powerful at the moment, and I know it's not very pleasing to build anti-heal instead of damage but it will increase your damage overall.

- The Crusher

The Crusher is what you should buy when you do not need anti-heal. It benefits from having lots of power in your build, which is perfect for a character like Bastet. It is also a solid jungle item so never be afraid to build it on any other junglers.

- Shifter's Shield
Shifter's Shield is the final suggestion I'll make. It's got great stats, providing 60 power while healthy and 40 of BOTH protections while injured. For a squishy, 40 protections is no joke. For reference, 100 protections gives 50% damage mitigation. With this built and no other defense items, Bastet has 100 physical protections, and 50 magical protections. Under 75%, Bastet has 140 physical protections, and 90 magical.
Don'ts

- Defensive Items
Most defensive items aren't as valuable on Bastet because of her good disengagement leap. The exceptions would be items like Mantle of Discord and Magi's Cloak which provide a lot for 1 item.
- Bumba's Spear
Bumba's Spear don’t buy this.

Hey puppeht,

Good start on this guide. A couple thoughts on what might be personal preference:
  • I don't know that I'd go straight into Transcendence. It's obviously very nice for the mana and power, but you're going to get fairly decent sustain from Bumba's Dagger, and early flat pen can help if and when you want to gank. I'd personally start with Mace, finish Warrior Tabi, then build into The Crusher or Brawler's Beat Stick (or perhaps even Jotunn's Wrath as a secondary option). I'd get Trans AFTER that.

  • Your writeup still states basically "don't build protection items" and in a general sense I can understand because her scaling is so nice that you want high power. That said, when your beads are down, you don't want to not be able to go in...or if you want to save beads...and that's where something like Magi's Cloak comes into play. I'm guessing you added Magi's after Gulf's comment, and that has always been a functional option for her...but now that doesn't align with your original writeup, with which I disagree. A slightly less powerful but alive Bastet is better than a high power but dead Bastet.

  • I don't fully agree with your skill leveling. I don't know that it's worth not leveling anything at 8 just to point skip and get your 2 maxed and your ult at rank 2 at level 9. I'd just put the 2nd point into your 1 at 8, and max the 2 at 9.
Overall, solid item choices and some decent explanations on items and gameplay.

Big Damage (32) | March 7, 2021 1:56am
Skipping at level 8 makes little to no difference and is just a preference thing. The understanding behind it is that if your next basic ability to level isn't that impactful, if you were to put a point into it then it would feel no different as if you were skipping an ability level, but you don't max your ult and primary ability til level 10. This grants that same feeling because you are skipping an ability but getting your ult and primary ability sooner.

Personally I only think it's useful on Scylla and Janus, but as I said the difference is minimal overall.

Hey Muffin, thanks for the feedback.

I'll try starting Mace in a few games later, I've always done the Transcendence start so that's what I went with. I like to get the stacks early so I'm a little bit stronger when it evolves. I think it helps stress how important Transcendence is.

I'll try to expand my explanation of the defensive items. We may just disagree in regard to the defensive items though. Apart from items like Magi's Cloak or to an extent Mantle of Discord, I wouldn't buy any defensive items. Your whole point on Bastet is to deal all your damage and jump out. You shouldn't be a target for the most part. Plus, while a dead Bastet is worse than a less powerful alive one, a dead enemy is even better. It's all theoretical and that's why I simplified into avoiding them.

I've found that I personally prefer skipping at level 8. Obviously if I'm headed into a fight I'll throw a point into the 1, but if I'm just going around jungling I can afford to get the 2 maxed as quick as possible. Again, another personal preference type deal.

Thanks for the feedback again

Big Damage (32) | March 7, 2021 1:58am
Something I often explain to my friends who keep dying in a full damage build is that it is useless having 6 damage items to deal damage if you aren't alive to dish it out. Protections are always helpful no matter what the role.

Especially Shifter's Shield right now, 70 power for scaling rivalling Bloodforge and Arondight with protections with it too.
1
Branmuffin17 (349) | March 6, 2021 11:43pm
When I'm talking about defensive items, it's because you say "I know that a defensive item may make sense on paper when behind but in reality it doesn’t work. You just won’t be able to do enough damage and a single defensive item will not provide enough to make up for that lack of power."

But then you actually list both Mantle and Cloak and say they are "situational but viable," which is pretty contradictory. That's what I'm saying you need to fix.

Magi's Cloak is a good situational pickup if you're facing a CC-heavy comp that can kill you if you're stunned and your beads are down.

puppeht | February 28, 2021 1:53pm
Yeah, I just think concentrating on power is so strong on Bastet because of her scaling, and she has pretty solid escape

True, but any type of grab, pull, or cripple will prevent her from bring able to use it.
