Playstyle

This is a basic but very useful tip on what you should be paying attention to.

Please note that if your enemy has Purification Beads or Aegis Amulet off cd and you go all-in and burn your entire combo including ult and get only their cooldowns in the exchange you failed and you're a useless jungler. Yes.

To avoid finding yourself in that situation you should first ask your laners if they burned any enemy relics and if not then you go ahead and gank the normal way using your 1 and wall. The goal here is to get an important relics cd and if so then the gank was successful and you'll then have 160 seconds to wait for them to overextend and punish with your full combo using ult. It's that easy to secure a lead... serious. Doing this alone is enough to carry yourself to low diamond.

To add on to that: So when your team types "X god no beads" or "X no aegis" you start counting down 160 secs. Farm your nearby camps, recall, buy an item and head straight to that lane using your full combo with ult. Most times tho your ganks will be the main reason a relics cd gets burned especially as you start playing against better players but in any case you get the point always be mindful of those relics cds. Those things matter more than you can imagine, especially in ranked and especially for you as the jungler. Knowing when your enemy has their relics on cd and using that info to make a play on them is at the essence of winning ranked games and is imo the most telling factor to help distinguish bad from good players.

about transcendence and conquest

Bruiser Thor

This is only ever needed if you're having a really bad start. It's rather rare that you go with something like this bc thor is extremely strong right now and doesn't need def other than a mantle or a magi's.

Going this route your job is to rotate around the map nonstop kinda like a semi-2nd support. You make every effort to put your adc and mid ahead and then as the game transitions to late you become your teams main teamfight initiatior by doing 3k elo ults and expecting your adc and mid to make all your early efforts worth by providing all the teamfight damage and winning the game (which if they don't then make sure to flame them in chat and lobby).

You're the frontliner now so don't be a puss, you'll have so much early def you'll be unkillable.

Build:

After you build get Void Shield. Your 5th item should provide lifesteal/regen cripple e.g Brawler's Beat Stick or Pestilence/ Contagion. Your 6th item can be anything from pen to cc reduction; choose based on the situation. As my 6th I'd go either Mantle of Discord, maybe Magi's Cloak situational. After Elixir of Speed choose between ccr and hp, maybe more lifesteal cripple.

Same idea but if 3 mages comp so you don't go death landing ult on lategame hebo jungle and scylla mid. Good sh.it.

Combos: Single target vs AoE

Make sure there's enough distance between you and your target before ulting cuz if you're too close they'll know you're coming since the channeling sound his ult makes is loud as ***

Single target combo:

So after you land throw in your hammer Mjolnir's Attunement and follow with autoattack, then use your 2 Tectonic Rift into an auto and quickly finish off with 3 Berserker Barrage and an additional auto if necessary. Make sure to practice the combo against bots (arena) until you can do it fast without screwing up. As long as the target lacks phys defense and you executed it correctly this combo should guarantee a kill.

Combo: 4 > 1 > AA > 2 > AA > 3

AoE combo:

You'll use this to start teamfights by aiming to land on at least 3 players. Before you look to initiate a fight tho 1st make sure you've your Purification Beads up (you'll get blown up instantly if you don't). When you land begin execution by 1st using your 3 Berserker Barrage then as the ult stun runs off ready your beads for inc cc chain and cleanse whatever they use to try to lock u down then move back a little and let your team join in. As the fights underway look to snipe the squishies in the back with your 2 Tectonic Rift and your hammer 1 Mjolnir's Attunement. Teleport to the hammer to finish off with autos if you're confident but be careful cuz if thats not enough to secure then you'll probably die without trading 1 for 1.

Combo: 4 > 3 > 2 > 1

Pros / Cons

PROS

+ Great engage/disengage with Anvil of Dawn and Tectonic Rift.

+ Strong through all stages of the game bc his kit allows for utility frontline based builds if you end up falling behind early.

+ Implemented an escape, a gap closer and high damage in his 1.

+ Perfect auto resets boost your damage output by an enormous amount.

+ A well placed Tectonic Rift wins teamfights.

+ Strong in skirmishes.
Thor has one of the most diverse kits in the game which allows you to build many different ways each very beneficial. He has 2 CC immunity mechanics implemented in his kit - Anvil of Dawn's cc immunity while channeling and Berserker Barrage's knockup immunity. This is huge because well-timed usage of either of them can play a crucial part in surviving sticky situations e.g when Ares ults and you have purification on CD use Anvil of Dawn to avoid the pull. If someone's chasing you with a knock up ability try to time your Berserker Barrage right as he's about to use it to avoid being cc'd. Finally you get an instant 30 power steroid when around more than 3 enemies which is like being an entire item ahead.

CONS

- Steep learning curve. If you can't aim your spells properly Thor goes from S tier to "Loki" tier.

- Bad usage of Tectonic Rift in a fight could potentially result in a lost game.

- If you fall behind you should NOT build the full glass cannon damage build above bc you'll be useless.

- Very mana-hungry early game.

- Cripples shut you down really hard.

How to not suck as Thor (and in general)

  • Look to position yourself well and snowball off of your enemy's smallest mistakes.
  • Play around your stuns and try to avoid finding yourself in a position where you're left with cooldowns in the middle of a team fight.
  • Always try to establish vision control and play for objectives.
  • Ward the enemy jungler's speed buff and look for an opportunity to put him behind.
  • Play smart and analyse each situation i.e. ask yourself the following questions before you act: can you fight? can your team help you if you fight? what would the consequences be if you failed an attempt and left your team 4v5? can you trade 1 for 1 and will your team be able to 4v4 without you and their adc? think before you act.
  • Always build according to what is the most optimal for the current situation you're in, never follow a certain build mindlessly.
  • Try to learn from your missplays and try your best to avoid repeating them.

Items & Relics

ITEMS

P
E
N
Not much explanation needed here just an overall great item on Thor you get flat penetration, cdr, mana and damage for 2350 gold. Note that Thor tends to be really mana hungry in the early game, for example a 2-1 combo burns like half your mana pool so you need to learn how to manage your mana correctly and avoid wasting it on unnecessary things before you can afford Jotunn's Wrath.

P
E
N
The general rule of thumb is the more pen you have the more true damage you'll deal. This shreds 15 flat protections and reduces your enemies healing by a total of 40% which is huge against healers like Ra Terra Hel and sustained gods in general cuz it reduces all sources of getting health back. This is an excellent buy for shutting down mages and warriors with heals and assassins and hunters with lots of life steal.

P
E
N
The new 20% additional pen on 1st ability cast greatly benefits Thor's dmg from 4>1>2>3 combo. The more armor your enemies choose to stack the more valuable this item becomes. The % penetration from Titan's Bane will go through the amount of armor your target has left after it has been reduced by any armor reduction item like Void Shield so that means Titan's Bane becomes less effective when combined with either % or flat armor reduction. So if you plan on building this don't buy Void Shield. Titan’s Bane stacks very well with more flat penetration, but it noticeably loses effectiveness the more reduction is applied.

P
E
N
The aura is what makes this item so good. The AoE 15% armor reduction can do wonders in both team fights and 1v1 scenarios, not to mention the 60 armor you get which drastically reduces the amount of damage taken when clearing jungle creeps or minion damage when ganking a lane. Get this if noone in your team plans on building it.

D
M
G
Snowball oriented item. Gives you huge mana pool and power. Expensive but worth it if utilized well. Build this as your 3rd or 4th item when you have already established a lead over your opponents.

D
M
G
The main benefits of this item are cost efficiency, 10% cdr and 40% increased damage on your basic attacks every time you use an ability. This passive pairs really well with the 4>1>AA>2>AA>3 combo overall great item when used by players that can auto reset with their abilities.

D
M
G
Passive turns you into a monster after ulting. Combined with Hydra's Lament Runeforged Hammer and Heartseeker you can just go 4>auto>1>auto and its a frag.

D
E
F
As of 7.7 movespeed + hp seems to be the go to stats on bruisers. It provides massive 300 hp and movespeed for just 1850g. Because of its cheap price, this item is incredibly cost effective and super high value on conquest. If you plan on building bruiser then consider this.

D
E
F
Out of all the defensive items Hide of the Urchin provides the most well rounded stats at full stacks, giving you 51 physical and magical protection, 250 health and 250 mana. This is by far the best defensive item you can buy on Thor. I would recommend building Hide of the Urchin early-mid game so you can have the item more or less stacked by mid-late.

D
E
F
Best lategame def item on divers like Thor. Great vs instagibbing melee assassins like Ao Kuang and his 30% execute threshold from King of the Eastern Seas. It provides durability in team fights and the passive serves as a cleanse and a 1s stun. One and only con is the cost at 2900 oof. If you plan on building Breastplate of Valor you should sell it late game for Mantle of Discord.

D
E
F
This is your go-to item against bursty mages like He Bo, Poseidon, Scylla, Kukulkan obviously because of the shield you get when you drop below 30% health. If your intent is strictly on survivability, Bulwark of Hope is the best option out of its tree.

D
E
F
This item is pretty self-explanatory you get 65 Physical protections, 20% cdr and 300 mana it's built along with Jotunn's Wrath for the 40% cooldown reduction cap. However never pick this up just to cap the maximum amount of cdr, in fact you should only build this for safer clears and better early/mid sustain if you fall behind.

D
E
F
Another item built solely to cripple the ability of a god to restore health from all sources. Its passive is there to directly counter gods with healing, making it an effective item against teams with gods like Hel, Chang'e etc. Note that Brawler's Beat Stick and Pestilence aura DO stack so you get 65% healing reduction but the difference is that Pestilence's effect is static 25% healing reduction within 55 units while Brawler's Beat Stick applies 40% healing reduction for 8 seconds while attacking the enemy.

RELICS

R
L
C
If you played other mobas like the more popular ones eg League where there's Flash, well blink in smite is used for the same purpose. You use it as a way to close the gap between you and your target or to escape sticky situations. One difference between League's flash and Blink Rune is that blink in smite isn't as broken as to be able to cast it during combat like flash in League is xD. League is for the less skilled MOBA players true facts.

R
L
C
Beads is probably the most important and commonly used active in Smite. Using this item grants the user CC immunity for a short duration, even while under the effects of crowd control. Always a must-have against gods with hard crowd control/lock down abilities like Ares's No Escape, Kumbhakarna's chain cc. It's also the best tool for countering[/color] Ao Kuang's ultimate. Always get purification unless your opponents lack crowd control.

R
L
C
Get this if you're a bad player.

R
L
C
Pick this up if your support is a playing like a boosted animal and you noticed that enemy healers and heavy on lifesteal gods are losing you the game. The upgraded version does wonders.

It looks like the shoes start was removed.

Just curious, what do you think about multi pots instead of Mana pots for start?

And also, I understand the BoV build is to rush cdr. But what if you were against 3 magical and 2 physical?
1
copyrightnenov | May 17, 2020 8:56am
i dont like them for start and i dont think they will put you ahead or at a disadvantage compared to regular pots. Many people say you should just go multis Hand of the Gods or just health pots + Hand of the Gods or just start all multis. tbh as long as you start assassins the pots you start will make little to no difference you can even go chalice + multis ull be just fine.

about BoV so minions in smite deal probably the most dmg out of all mobas ive ever played excluding dota and that is especially true in the early/mid game so when you buy breastplate ull have all the def u need to get your mind off of giving a f about whether youll get rolled by minions upon ganking and if laners have pushed or still killing the wave - you just dont need to care about minion dmg anymore u can gank away all u want. Sure you can buy Ancile or even better rush [[Runic Shield] both cheaper than valor and great if u really feel like u need to stack resistance agaisnt mages as early as possible but when u weight the pros and cons i dunno if rushing magic def over BoV comes on top no matter the situation. All mages are lategame (some mid/late) and most times unless early-fed dont do jack sht till like boots + 1st/2nd core item. Naturally you will tweak your build later on by buying runic right after valor instead of voidshield.

Pre rework you had to do a lot better in order to be able to afford building full dmg and the margin for error was very limited so it used to make a lot more sense to build def on thor. Now you can pretty much build full dmg all the time. The bruiser build is only if u fall behind imho

Dubious fashion sense aside, I too wonder why you go with an item that only provides a small amount of movement speed over one that provides 15 power for quicker camp clear.

void shield and titian's bane dont have the best synergy due to the way they calculate pen, so if you use titans dont use void

Hey there, very well thought out guide- with Thor being one of my main characters I can definitely tell you know what you're talking about. I like the details on ability combos the most- builds are bound to work as well; and my only concern would be regarding the very first one.

While there's nothing wrong with the idea behind it, I think that it'd make use of at least a bit of magical protection in order not to be demolished by a single mage ult; maybe a Spirit Robe instead of Breastplate of Valor would make sense- it still gives some CDR, a great passive and a decent amount of both types of protection.

Speaking of items, I am curious what did you mean under the Stone Cutting Sword description saying that armor reduction is capped at 40 points (or at least so did I understand)- I can't recall such thing; but is it the case actually?

And the last thing that you might want to consider; I personally think that including some items' and abilities' descriptions in double brackets would make the "notes" section even more visually attractive.

All things considered though, it definitely deserves an upvote.
1
copyrightnenov | September 16, 2016 9:19am
Thank you for taking the time to read my guide Daelinn. About the double brackets with items/abilities now tbh I have no idea how to do any of that stuff because my knowledge is very limited when it comes down to BB coding and my formatting is obviously not that great but if you feel like giving me some quick tips i'm totally up for it. About the Spirit Robe and the Breastplate of Valor now the "example build" section i put there is nothing i'd usually build, i put that there to give people a general understanding of what is optimal and that's it. My builds are heavily situational, the only thing i'd build for sure is JW. The flat armor reduction isn't capped that was my bad sorry if i confused someone. Also Spirit Robe i find extremely lackluster - the stats is garbage and the passive is even more garbage especially on Thor. If you want survivability with both def stats combined Hide of the Urchin and Mantle of Discord are your best bets.

Since you say your knowledge to BB-coding is limited, I'm going to try and help out by placing this spoiler here. It's a very small "basic BB-coding guide" that I made. You may allready know everything in here, but perhaps you may learn something new you can use to enhance your guide.

My bad then, I simply meant something like:
Code:
[[Berserker Barrage]]

which you're already using on the items' names; I just thought it'd be a nice subtle addition if you did something like that to abilities' names as well, as it helps newer players/and those interested in more detailed values.

But of course the whole looks solid as it is; I'd only suggest considering XZeroStrike's advice not to have the whole text in white, as it can make reading less comfortable at times- white color would be better used to make some phase/description stand out for example; just a thought.

Nice guide. However, could you cut down on the White a bit. The entire guide in white is going to give somebody a headache someday! .-.

+1 though, nice guide.

I agree with your core general build, but thats really all the power he needs. Those four items allow you to 100-0 almost any god in the game full combo albeit guardians.

The item I dont like is Void Shield. Its expensive, it works against titan's bane, it doesnt give any mana, and offers nothing against mages. Ive seen some pros building this, because theoretically it outtrades other physical gods, but its still not a good purchase IMO.

Thor's job is not to trade, its to gank. If you want raw DPS, you rush beatstick. Its cheaper, gives more power and pen, and has a better passive. Because you want jotunns for the cooldown and titans for everything else, that takes care of your damage. Def can wait until item #4 where your early game ability damage starts to fall off and you become more frontline. At that point, breastplate and oni's/bulwark become better options.

copyrightnenov | September 1, 2016 4:13pm
I am very well aware that VS is underwhelming when combined with TB for obvious reasons but the point is when you land your ult on multiple targets your passive will give you 30 instant power and VS's aura will chunk 20 flat protections leaving them with around 40 protections making them take around 100 more damage from your 3 so yeah it is an expensive buy but if u have some1 to set yo *** up for a good ult VS is a must!
1
Lucioo | September 1, 2016 6:30am
I belive [*] Void Shield its a great item because its pasive allows you to ult in a team fight and let all the squishies without 20 protections for you and your teamates to finish them off, it is a expensive item but can change the course of a team fight.
sorry for any bad english.

overld1 (18) | September 1, 2016 12:48pm
For Thor if you ever want to put defense that actually doesn't interfere with Titan's Bane is actually Shifter's Shield. This still give you power and protections. This is also useful item if you like to start team fights.
1
masterricu (12) | September 1, 2016 12:08pm
Its no problem. The thing is, I treat Thor just like every other assassin and focus on ganking people instead of teamfighting. I find ulting on multiple people isnt always a great idea because you can only use your full combo on one person, not to mention you just blew your cc immune escape.

Void Shield does have okay stats, but if you are going to get it I wouldnt recommend item 2. Beatstick is cheaper and gives more power, and who know, that 200 gold difference might be enough for them to finish their defense item before you finish you damage item, so timing counts as well. If I were to pick it up, I would replace breastplate (item 5) with it. Thats if you want more power, but not necessarily as much cdr or defense.

Because thor isnt teamfighting early game, build beat stick sooner. The team fight item can wait until late game when there are actually team fights. I still like breastplate better though. :/ That mana, cdr, prot, and price are too gud!
