Update Log

Updated as of Patch 4.19

Introduction

Hou Yi is a strong choice for an ADC in today's meta. He has several tools to be successful, and is a constant threat in lane. He performs very well against other Hunters, and his passive, Suntouched, makes him effective against other ADCs who opt to build crit.

Overall, he is a versatile Hunter who has good variability in how he can be built. He has the ability to do both high single target damage and high area damage. Because of this, it is best for his build to give him a good balance of power, penetration, and attack speed.

This guide will be focusing on 2 main build paths. A Qin's Sais route, and a Critical Strike route. It is important to note that both builds have the same starting builds, as far as the first 3 items go. This way, it gives you some flexibility and time to choose the build path that best suits you in a match.

Items

Qin's Build

This Qin's build will give you a good balance of power, penetration, and attack speed to get the most out of your abilities and boxing potential. You may opt for this build path when the enemy team is very tanky with high health. For example, the enemy team composition may include a Geb support, whose passive Hard as Rock reduces the power of Critical hits. This could discourage you from following the Critical Strike build path.

The Qin's build provides consistent damage, meaning you won't have to cross your fingers in hopes for a Critical Strike to proc.

Ninja Tabi

The attack speed from Ninja Tabi isn't as strong as Warrior Tabi in the early game, but moves nicely into the later stages of a game. They provide your Qin's Sais more procs, and give you a higher DPS once getting your Devourer's Gauntlet stacked.

Because Hou Yi doesn't have any attack speed steroids in his kit, you won't have to worry about overcapping attack speed by yourself. It's important to take note of your team composition, though. If you have a support like Fafnir, his Coerce can potentially overcap your attack speed. In these cases, it is acceptable to opt for Warrior Tabi (See Alternative Items).

Devourer's Gauntlet

Devo's is a strong item for the cost, and has good synergy with the ADC playstyle. As a carry, you will want to spend most of your early game farming, and occasionally boxing in lane. This item provides you with stacks that increase your power as you farm, and gives increasing lifesteal to help sustain you in lane when taking poke damage. As you farm, this will give you a nice power curve moving into the middle game.

The Executioner

As it is currently a very strong item, The Executioner can greatly benefit ADCs like Hou Yi. Providing power, attack speed, and penetration in the form of protection reduction, it covers all grounds as a solid item. It is also a nice setup item for Qin's Sais.

It is important to note that the protection reduction is applied by basic attacks. Therefore, hitting an enemy with a few basic attacks before executing your ability combos will help you maximize your damage output. This item also works well together with your other physical teammates, as your protection reduction will increase their physical damage on a target when ganking or team-fighting.

Qin's Sais

This is the core piece that this build is centered around. Once built, it will provide you with a nice power spike that makes you a threatening offensive force. The attack speed and penetration from The Executioner will combine well with Qin's Sais to get the most damage out of the passive when auto-attacking. The strong physical power will increase your basic attack damage, as well as your ability damage, giving you multiple ways to add pressure to enemies.

Odysseus' Bow

Odysseus' Bow will combine well with your Qin's Sais, and also give you more area damage as you transition into the team-fighting stages of the game. Again, it is important to note that you don't overcap attack speed in your team composition.

Titan's Bane

The final item in this build is mainly based on the user's preference. For general purposes though, I recommend Titan's Bane, as it will give you strong objective damage as you attempt to close out a match. The immediate penetration will also ensure that you are doing good ability damage when you don't get the chance to land basic attacks for The Executioner to proc.

Alternative Items

Critical Build

When facing less tanky compositions, this build will allow you to outburst other gods that may try to box with you. It gives you strong single target damage potential while also providing you with good power for ability damage. The Critical Strike aspect of this build will give you crazy-high late DPS numbers, and allow you to be an offensive driving force in team fights.

Ninja Tabi

The attack speed from Ninja Tabi isn't as strong as Warrior Tabi in the early game, but moves nicely into the later stages of a game. They provide you with more opportunities to get a Critical Strike, and give you a higher DPS once getting your Devourer's Gauntlet stacked.

Because Hou Yi doesn't have any attack speed steroids in his kit, you won't have to worry about overcapping attack speed by yourself. It's important to take note of your team composition, though. If you have a support like Fafnir, his Coerce can overcap your attack speed.

Poisoned Star

As a first Critical Strike item, this will give you nice boxing potential, as the passive reduces enemy movement speed and damage output. As enemy ADCs and Junglers begin to get their power online, it is important to have a way to box with them effectively if they try to focus you. Conversely, this item also makes you a strong threat, which could allow you to play more aggressively moving into the later stages of the match.

Deathbringer

This is a core item in the Crit build, and provides a huge DPS spike when built after your first Crit item. Deathbringer will establish you as a big threat for the enemy team, due to your massive damage potential.

Wind Demon

This item slot is more situational, and can be substituted by other options (See Alternative Items). In general cases though, Wind Demon is a strong choice that can give you some pretty insane damage potential, as well as some added mobility when chasing targets. Make sure that the passive attack speed boost doesn't overcap you, though.

Conclusion

I hope you have found this guide both helpful and informative. Thank you for reading, and good luck in your future matches.
