Replace Shoes of the Magi with Shoes of Focus late game (optional).
Get Bancroft's Talon before Typhon's Fang. You can rush Bancroft's Talon first item if you like a more aggressive playstyle and want to take advantage of Sorrow ASAP.
Typhon's Fang allows you to overcap on your lifesteal while giving a large power spike. The power spike is larger if you are hurt and Bancroft's Talon's passive activates. This one is ALMOST core. You can consider something else if enemy anti healing is very relevant.
Assuming you already have Bancroft's Talon, building Typhon's Fang earlier will allow for more aggression (thanks Kriega).
Great on him due to his ticking damage. This item, by itself, will give you all the penetration you need for your kill combo.
My preferred slot for this item is usually 4th.
Gem of Isolation works great with his abilities as well. The added health is a plus.
Divine Ruin For anti heal. Don't buy if enemy healing isn't relevant.
Shaman's Ring is usable in damage builds. I get this item later in my build. I don't have issues stacking it late game, especially after Spear of the Magus is online.
Rod of Tahuti works well in helping you 100 to 0 an enemy faster with the kill combo.
Obsidian Shard interacts negatively with Spear of the Magus. However, you may need to get both if the enemy team has 3+ tanks.
Spear of Desolation: More pen, high power, and some CDR. This is an OK item, especially if you don't feel comfortable buying Potion of Magical Might and plan on swapping out Shoes of the Magi for Shoes of Focus.
I like building this early in Arena for more ability usage.
Build Warlock's Staff very early so you can stack ASAP.
Health from Warlock's Staff + protections from Mantle of Discord + lifesteal from Bancroft's Talon and Sorrow = decent survivability.
Blink Rune is kinda troll too, but it's fun to blink in, wrap with Mummify, and finish with Death Gaze. Remember boys and girls, spicy plays get the lays.
This gives an extra 10% cdr along with some power. Definitely buy if you're not having trouble staying alive (benefits go away if you die).
Rushing lifesteal helps you make full use of Sorrow ASAP.
Get Shoes of the Magi first and sell for Shoes of Focus late game (optional).
Getting Bancroft's Talon, Shoes of the Magi, and Typhon's Fang gives you crazy lifesteal and makes you a bit harder to kill. Due to Sorrow, this allows you to delay Spear of the Magus to 4th item slot. Credit to Kriega for teaching me that one.
Use your abilities wisely since this has no CDR. If you have $ leftover, I recommend getting Potion of Magical Might and the blue buff.
Good for arena if you need to spam your abilities early. Getting the late Bancroft's Talon heavily delays your passive's full potential.
Can sell Shoes of the Magi for Shoes of Focus late game (optional).
Replace Shoes of the Magi with Shoes of Focus late game (optional).
I love it when Mantle of Discord's passive denies Loki the kill (the passive may not work if it activates when he ults you because his ult makes him CC immune).
Most Loki players will build a ton of penetration. The HP from Warlock's Staff along with the protections from Mantle of Discord increase your survival chances against him.
This build focuses on survival first. Build Mantle of Discord earlier if receiving a lot of focus. Otherwise, build later if the Loki is kept in check. Or get something else if he's irrelevant.
Credit to BranMuffin for helping with explanations:
Spear of the Magus is definitely great when you can build it early. Dealing with squishies = true damage. Mid-game, when you face tanks with some protections (but not a full build), you'll also punch through a lot of their armor.
Late game, the switch to Obsidian Shard is good IF dealing with FULL tanks who have magical protections over 150. You should still have at least 1-2 items with flat penetration to help with the squishies.
Summary: The Spear of the Magus is good mid game because you'll deal more damage to gods who have at least one protection item. I would only recommend this build against tanky enemy compositions. If ALL enemies are building VERY tanky (for whatever reason), keep Spear of the Magus.
Tap each threat level to view Anubis’s threats
I find Grasping Hands safe for wave clearing/harassment. I max this first.
I don't like Anubis's Plague of Locusts too much since it roots him, leaving him VERY vulnerable. However, this is one of your damaging abilities. After maxing Grasping Hands, whenever you can't put points into your ultimate, put points into this.
Max Mummify last. Other than a slightly longer stun duration, it doesn't give you too much use per level.
1. Aegis Amulet: Prevent being deleted by high, single hit damage ( Searing Pain for example).
2. Purification Beads: Escape from ultimates that will gurantee your death such as Fenrir's Ragnarok and Ares's No Escape.
Also note that your ultimate, Death Gaze, gives you CC immunity. You can consider that to save yourself from ultimates like Ragnarok or No Escape if your purification beads are down.
This item pairs well with Aegis Amulet.
3. Phantom Veil if there's an Odin. He may not be able to kill you by himself, especially if he's building as a full tank, but his Ring of Spears is a blaring siren that lets his team know a squishy Anubis is trapped and can't utilize his lifesteal.
1) Stay in the back and let your team do the front lining. Clear minion waves and harass enemies with Grasping Hands.
2) Kill combo:

Just remember that Anubis' passive gives prot reduction and u don't need typhons for the full benefit. So with passive and deso u don't need magus lategame, even more so if there's a void stone on your team.
Also now that I think about it, Typhon's Fang isn't that good at all. It's expensive and only useful if no one is building anti-heal.
I understand that Anubis passive gives prot reduction, but he has to get all three ticks before he gets full benefit.
Where magus really shines is in his kill combo. 3 - 2 - 4
Magus provides more overall pen, than what you proposed, for that ult set up. In the late game, you're damage is fully developed. Selling magus late game, you just lose some damage potential on that kill combo. However, if the enemy guardian isn't building heartward and thebes for his squishies, then your point is good and definitely something I'll be testing.
Mantle of discord should also be a situational pick up.
I do think your proposed build is good for tank shredding if you don't sell spear of magus.
Also, I don't agree with the Typhon's statement. I feel it's still absolutely a viable and functional item. The healing boost from the passive can counteract standard anti-heal, at least to keep your lifesteal functional.
I do like Kriega's build order, and think it would work just fine, but I think the old builds are still very viable.
Spear of the Magus is definitely great when you can build it early. Dealing with squishies = true damage, and mid-game when you face tanks with some protections (but not a full build), you'll also have a chance to deal close to true damage.
Late game, the switch to Obsidian Shard is good if/when dealing with full tanks with full builds and magical protections over 150. At that point, Anubis will also deal so much damage that he doesn't need the true damage potential from Magus to still kill squishies.
Obsidian shard can be the cherry on the cake.
Maybe with kriegas build, you need 2 item slots (deso and obsidian) vs. Just 1 for magus.
Anyway, what do you think about this?
Pythags
Cdr boots
Divine ruin - if no one else is building it
Bancroft/magus
Bancroft/magus
Sitiational. chronos pendant maybe if you're fighing a lot or maybe something else like tahuti or gem of iso? Any other suggestions?
Maybe get Pen boots if you plan on getting Chronos' Pendant and are delaying Magus until after bancrofts.
For large power spikes, I prefer Typhon's Fang (especially if there's no relevant anti healing) and Shaman's Ring. Anubis has nice AoE with his Grasping Hands. The Shaman's Ring offers a nice movement speed bonus as well.
Preference can come in to play, but if we look at the item for what it provides, I think it can serve Anubis well. As a burst mage who can quickly drain an enemy's health pool, Rod can significantly enhance your burst potential and works well with your high scaling. This also works in combination with your lifesteal to give you better survivability.
That being said, additional utility could be preferred over an expensive item like Rod, but in terms of a full damage build, I think the item is a viable option and is worthy of consideration.
yea i'll put rod of tahuti as a consideration for sure. I used to build it all the time in season 4.
Arena is teamfight focused, and you will rarely be alone. Base is nearby and you won't miss out on a lot if you head back early, therefore lifesteal early is not a necessity.
Sure his passive benefits from lifesteal early, but in this case building it as a 3rd item outweighs building it second or first.
Thinkabout it. If all im doing is laying down grasping hands from the back line, do i really need lifesteal second?
If i need the regen, id just walk back to base, which is literally half a meter away from me.
I also explained that yiu could rush lifesteal or more pen as your second item. Its in the guide.
The thing is if you have Bancroft's Talon though you don't need to play that passively.
When i update, i will be sure to make this more explicit.
Your job will also 90% of the time be to kill a carry, mage or assassin. So penetration is not your key stat in arena.
Lifesteal is and will always be your first priority as anubis. So the start is good (except the boots should be dps boots). And then you put in a breastplate or chronos pendant (between pythag and bankrofts imo) instead of spear of the magus. Then it is spear of desolation or rod. I would say rod first actually, just because you will most likely get more out of the rod passive than the spear passive if you end up only being able to finish your 5th item.
Skill priority is good for arena, maxing loctus swarm can work. But grasping hands and lvl 2-3 mummify is my pref skill priority in arena as well.
All in all its a solid build and guide imo. :)
In Arena, then, I would give less weight to Spear of Desolation, even though it's got great stats overall, and especially the 10% CDR. Sure, you can use the 20 flat pen too...but with no stacks, Spear of the Magus is already almost there. If I were to propose passing up Deso (or at least getting Magus first), I would suggest a nice, cheap Sands of Time at the start to make up for that CDR.
As for double-lifesteal...I don't suggest it for Anubis. It can work, sure, but it's generally considered inefficient for basically any god. One other key stat to consider...As your life goes down, Bancroft's Talon's lifesteal goes up. At 25% health, he's getting 40% lifesteal out of that...but he's actually getting higher, at least potentially.
See, you can't forget about Sorrow, his passive. At 3 stacks of damage against a target, he gets an additional 100% lifesteal. And magical lifesteal caps at 65. So really, when your health is at the point where Bancroft's lifesteal is providing 32/33% lifesteal (which is probably around 60% health), you're capping your lifesteal as long as you've got those stacks. As such, I couldn't support the idea of double-lifesteal.
So, with these 2 things in mind, I'd be looking to max CDR (or get close), likely use Spear of the Magus for my main pen item, use one lifesteal item (choice determined by user preference), and see about a bit of enhancement to survivability...one protection item on Anubis is fine, since he's so vulnerable. How would I do it?
Sands of Time (10% CDR), Shoes of Focus (now 20% CDR), Spear of the Magus / Bancroft's Talon in whichever order, Chronos' Pendant (now max 40% CDR), Rod of Tahuti, and if you get that far, sell Sands for maybe Magi's Blessing (if more Purification effect is needed) or another protection item against the biggest threats.
If you prefer Pythagorem's Piece as the lifesteal item, and since it also has CDR, I would go: Sands of Time, Shoes of the Magi (early flat pen so you don't need Spear next), Pythagorem's Piece (now 20% CDR), Spear of the Magus, Chronos' Pendant (now max 40% CDR), Rod of Tahuti, sell Sands for Spirit Robe.
Oh, and Bracer of Undoing is a totally functional relic...you might want to include that.
Make sense? Thoughts?
Thanks for pointing that out.
If the late game is going well enough, what do you think about selling Sands of Time for Spear of Desolation instead of a defensive item?
I feel that Anubis is way too squishy for bracer of undoing, so I never considered it. But in a scenario where you get to 1v1 an enemy, this could definitely provide you an edge.
I'll archive this guide, play with your suggested items, and post an update. I've been holding off on doing this, but thanks for commenting and reminding me.
You mentioned that my main targets will be ADCs, mages, and assassins. Your suggested build gives a flat +30 penetration from dps boots (shoes of the magi) and spear of desolation (assuming I can complete the build since spear of desolation was the last item). Will +30 flat pen (or less if I can't finish the build) be enough to 100 to 0 a squishy?
Also, if I'm unable to finish the build, I won't get 40% CDR since Spear of Desolation was the last item.
Overall, I agree with what you are saying, it's just that I was having way too much fun with spear of the magus after its crazy buff :P
I will try out some games with your suggested build, clean up the guide, and give you the due credit. Thank you for the suggestions! I'd love to hear back from you.
