Ymir is an incredible support with amazing team-fight capabilities. Ymir has incredible ability damage with his ultimate doing a base damage at maximum level of 1100. He has a very reliable stun and has a moderately good wave clear. His walls can prevent enemies from fleeing and can even start a gank if placed correctly. Mana is a problem at the start of the game which is where the starting item choices come into play.
The Watchers gift allows for mana to be regenerated relatively quickly while adding sustainability, allowing for you to stay in lane for long periods of time as long as you do not spam abilities and allow for your teammates to wave clear while you support. Boots do what you would expect them to do, make you move faster and giving you a part for one of your core items. If the watchers gift just isn't enough or heavy aggression is encountered inside of lane potions can be bought to restore your mana and health.
Reinforced shoes give some much needed CC reduction to the table as well as some bonus health and Magical power, as well as further increasing movement speed. Hide of the Urchin is just a great choice for an all around defense item. it can stack protections allowing for greater defensive capabilities. The Spear of the Magus gives extra penetration and allows for Ymir to dish out more damage. The Ethereal staff also gives a nice amount of extra health and passively converts health into magical power for extra damage.
With Ymir's high base ability damage any extra magical power items (within reason) are a viable purchase. This is apparent in buying the Rod of Tahuti which just makes you hurt...really bad. The Void stone complements Ymir as a character because you will generally be up in the enemy's **** while supporting your team. With the Void stone close proximity to enemies results in their base magical protection being reduced. The Void Stone also gives a nice amount of both magical power and protection making it an incredible item for Ymir.
When it comes to "Extra items" I'm talking about Items that you can use to fill the last slot in your inventory. Honestly you do not need these items if you do not want them; a full damage build IS what this is however I'm going to give you some insight on some useful substitutions that can be made to ensure the win for your team. Sovereignty is always a great choice for supports that have teams facing constant aggression. This item paired with a Stone or Gaia allows for you to have a ridiculous amount of HP5 and some solid magical and physical protection. Another great combo is the Magi's Blessing paired with the mystic mail makes for a nasty combo to deal with during team fights, allowing for bonus constant damage and the ability to nullify a hard CC. There are many combos that can be put into unique situations during a game so be creative and experiment.
Thanks for reading my guide! I hope it may help many people with becoming better players as well as helping veterans to come up with their own style of build. Any feedback is obliged and once again, thank you!
