I'm keeping this guide up for the time being for reference. Please check out the other wonderful Hou Yi guides for the most up to date information.

Introduction

Hey everyone! I'm OMGASIA, casual Smite addict. While I know how to enjoy all casual game modes, I mostly play Joust and Arena. I’ve decided to start getting basic guides up for new Gods as they are released so there is a starting point for players who weren’t able to test them on the PTS. This isn't meant to be a definitive end all be all on Hou Yi. This is the way I've enjoyed playing him so far, and possibly others will enjoy as well!

Introducing Hou Yi !

Why yes, that IS a bird bow.

The New Changes And You!

Season 2's patch has brought a few changes to Hou Yi, as well as the entire game. With a new UI, new and changed items, god changes, and even a new Conquest map, you may feel overwhelmed! To read all the changes click here!

Here are your Hou Yi specific changes.

In General

  • Base Attack Speed increased from 0.85 to 0.9
  • Attack Speed per level increased from 1% to 1.2%

Hou Yi will be attacking faster.

Ricochet
  • Increased projectile speed.
  • Fixed a tooltip typo on cooldown.

The arrow is finally going faster! Yeah!

The tooltip clarification doesn't change how Hou Yi is played. It just fixed information about the ability in game.

Divebomb
  • Hou Yi no longer becomes immune to damage and healing while airborne.
  • Increase the speed Hou Yi travels.
  • Hou Yi is no longer rooted upon landing.

It looks like they're trying to let
Hou Yi keep his escape while making it so he can be hit during it.

I haven't had time to look over the item changes yet. I plan on updating itemization if needed after I've had a while to look into them and mess around with them :)

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Good Damage

  • Unique kit that is fun to play

  • Can see stealthed enemies with Mark of the Golden Crow

  • That bow is wicked awesome
Cons:
  • Takes skill to fully utilize his kit

  • Slowest base attack speed of the hunters

  • His steroid doesn't help with objectives

  • He lost his wife Chang'e forever. That's pretty depressing, yo.

you should probably remove the unicorn build from the guide as even Krett said that it is a lot less effective now and greatly lags behind almost any crit build in damage. Believe me I am sad too. That and the titans bane with the executioner leads to unfavorable results as you ignore a percent of there current protections meaning you would get way more damage out of a crusher or a brawlers beatstick as that is flat penetration which doesn't Change regardless of there current protections. meaning for the most part even against tanks the combination of executioner plus titans bane leads to greatly diminishing results. Just saying.

Oh, wow my bad. I noticed there was an inconsistency between the build at top and the one below, but I can see that this was changed since then (maybe it was just something between different publications). I've actually read all the Prof Proxy articles and had been building Titan's Bane one spot early in all my builds by mistake :o . Hadn't even noticed my mistake until I just tried to point it! Now I just feel dumb >_<

No don't feel dumb! Stuff is always situational <3 If the enemy team has no healer or lifesteal and and is a bit tanky then Titan's Bane would be better first, anyway!

I've almost always seen Unicorn build with Brawler's Beat Stick before Titan's Bane. Looking at the guide I'm seeing the order listed the same up top and in the builds section, though I may be misunderstanding what you're saying abut "as you have at the top." If you check Professor Proxy's in depth analysis of Crit vs Unicorn he also has it build with Brawler's Beat Stick first. You can build it either way depending on your preferences and situation, though!

Hey, still really great guide but just one note: On the section for the Sunicorn build, you put Brawler's Beat Stick before Titan's Bane, which while not being that big a difference isn't the traditional unicorn build, as you have at the top. (Sorry I'm so nitpicky, I know it's a simple error). Great job tho, keep up the good work!

Hey there, first I'd like to say you have a really nice guide here. I mastered Hou Yi pretty quickly after release and took an odd amount of liking to his play-style and potential.

First, I see that you acknowledged in the comments that his [3] is a good escape, but it still lists in the guide multiple times that he has no escape. And Divebomb (while it being slow and not that far) is one of the more useful escapes i've seen via the suedo-invulnerability it provides.

One suggestion for the guides from personal experience and tinkering: I've found Enfeebling/Weakening Curse Actives to be very helpful with Hou Yi.

- They provide a good slow prior to using Sunbreaker. That with the 1 Stun will allow maximum damage from the Ult. I've used it many times now and it works wonders if done correctly.

- It can help chase or act as a tool to get away in combination with Divebomb.

- You can use it to prevent healing while they are slowed. = Huge in Team Fights.

- The other curse slows attack speed, which allows you yet another big duel advantage.

Anyways, that's my 2 cents. Great guide! Keep it up.

Thank you so much for your compliments and input! Yeah I wrote up the preliminary guide before he was released on the PTS, and finished it after the PTS was done. The notes didn't talk about his movement speed increase on divebom so I started with that, and totally forgot to rescind that information after! Thanks for reminding me I'll fix it. I'll also add in your knowlege as well, crediting you of course. Thanks for the help!

Holy **** that map change alone may make Xball like a high tier God, and Artemis too. It's also like an unintended buff to items like the golden bow and the oddesyeus bow!

I am no Conquest pro (I rarely play it) but I am excited to see what happens. While I don't know much more than meta basics, so I can't tell you what would change, I do know some things will be changing for sure!
