Take the defense buff at lvl 9 and then go in and use ulti to prevent getting destroyed.

Fire giant/Gold Fury

Be the tank, Tank the Fire giant at 20~25 mins into the game.

Tank the Gold fury at 20 mins and 30 mins and 40 mins into the game.

Team Work

Try to have a anubis on your team you can stun then the anubis uses his 3 and 1 if they are about to get away anubis use his 2 and you your ulti for the slow then the anubis ults if the group is big.

I think your start is excellent: breastplate is THE item to get in a tank ymir. However, your build has barely any magic resist and ymir has the best natural hp gain in the game. Replace gauntlet of thebes with a stone of gaia or void stone and i think you'll have a good tank build going: the former for more "pure" tank, with ridiculous regen, the latter more "support/offensive" tank with the magic defense reduction aura, 20 focus, and 50 ap.

Also, consider the vanguard starting item for mid game: you'll replace it endgame, but for 750 gold no other item gives tanking stats that good, and the 5 damage reduction from all sources can help a lot when having to tank team fights with gods AND minions in the mix.
