Introduction.

Howdy folks, ready for some reading? No? Then go find another guide. Otherwise, thanks for staying. This guide is a bit unusual because most people jungle with Thanatos, but I've tested this build out multiple times, and it has worked out for the most part. I know this build isn't fancy with all your fancy pictures and snazzy intros and outros, but I decided to keep it clean and simple, with lots and lots of words to help break it down bit by bit. So if you think you can read everything, and add a plethora of new words to your dictionary, including "plethora", then this is definitely the right guide for you! Let's get's started, go on, just scroll down and read the next chapter! Now! Stop reading this chapter! You just read this sentence! wanna know how I know? Because you won't listen and read the next chapter!

Thanatos' strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:
1. High sustain - Thanatos has rediculous sustain. He sustains himself by using his 1 to get HP back, and just by killing things he gets a percentage of their HP back. Not only can Thanatos sustain his own HP, but his own mana barely runs out, if you recall regularly, you won't even notice it running out half of the time.
2. High Damage - Thanatos early game has quite a bit of poking potential with his 1, he can dish out a quarter of an enemy god's hp early game with just 1 hit, and he even gets hp back for hitting! He is also a force to be reckoned with late game depending on how you build him, especially with critical strikes, this guy almost never goes down in the right hands.
3. Great chaser - Thanatos can seek out any god that is in the threshold of his ultimate, and can chase them down no matter how fast they are going. His 2 will catch you up with anyone that doesn't have an escape, and his ultimate can lock down your target as long as you don't miss the landing.
4. Incredible ganker - As long as you get the first strike on a successful gank, you are sure to either get the kill, or send the enemy running back to base before they have time to counterattack.
5. Very sustainable mana - Even early game, you'll find that Thanatos almost never runs out of mana before returning to base. This is your advantage when soloing, you can keep yourself alive with your 1, and keep using your 1 with the use of very little mana.

Both:
1. Risky escape artist - Thanatos can use his 2 or his ultimate to escape enemies, but both abilities use HP, and using your ultimate as an escape means you won't be using it to get an easy kill.
2. Risky skill shots - Missing your abilities can hurt you in a big way. They have relatively high cooldown, and missing just means your depleting your own HP. This is just about pure skill though, if you don't miss, this isn't a weakness.

Weaknesses:
1. Weak to crowd control - Thanatos' ultimate weakness is crowd control, with just one freeze or stun near the enemy team, you will go down before you even get a chance to move.
2. Low HP - Although Thanatos has high sustain, if you aren't careful his HP can drop quicker than any other god, and even most mages can 1 shot him if fed enough.
3. Abilities cost HP - This isn't much of a weakness as long as you don't miss your abilities. But if you are low on HP and are just barely about to die, your only chance is to run because even if you have full mana, you can't use your abilities with low hp.
4. High cooldown - All of Thanatos' abilities have some very high cooldown, this pretty much forces you to either use them wisely, or build some sort of Cooldown reduction. If you are building more towards focusing down squishy targets when you get the chance, you shouldn't have to worry about Cooldown unless you miss, otherwise Cooldown will help you engage fights more often.

Abilities and how to use them.

Passive - Harvester of Souls: Enemy gods within his ultimate's execute threshold are revealed to Thanatos. Dealing the killing blow to enemies also empowers Thanatos, healing him based on the max hp of his target, 20% if it's a god and reducing his active cooldowns by 5s, or 10% if it's a minion. Additionally, all of Thanatos' abilities cost health and mana to use.
How to use: Basically anytime Thanatos kills something, he gets HP back. great for keeping yourself alive in the solo lane, because you can kill minions for HP instead of using HP potions. Thanatos can also see any enemy god that is within the threshold of his ultimate, which he can use to instantly kill any enemy god. Also Thanatos' abilties cost both HP and mana, so make sure you don't miss or you are basically just killing yourself. None of Thanatos' abilities use too much mana, infact you might never run out as long as you return to base regularly which negates the need for mana potions. Probably the biggest downside is that when you have low HP you can't use ANY abilities even if you have full mana, so be careful!

1 - Death Scythe: Thanatos flings his scythe at an enemy, dealing 100/170/240/310/380 (+60% of your physical power) damage and an additional 10% of the targets maximum health against enemy gods. Enemies hit are slowed by 20% for 3s and heal Thanatos by 75% of damage dealt. Consumes 5% of Thanatos max hp when used.

Cost: 25/35/45/55/65 mana.

Cooldown: 13 seconds.
How to use: This is your key to taking over solo lane. Use this whenever you can on the enemy god, it will sustain your HP as long as you don't miss and it will heavily harass the enemy. It is good for engaging because it will slow anyone hit by it, but you shouldn't engage early game, even if it's a 1v1. Early game just use it to keep yourself alive. You can use this on a minion to get HP from hitting the minion as well as killing it too which is good for keeping yourself alive at range.

2 - Scent of Death: Thanatos senses death, removing and gaining immunity to slow effects and gaining 10/15/20/25/30% move speed and 15/20/25/30/35 physical penetration for 6s. His move speed bonus doubles when moving toward an enemy god within the instant kill threshold of his ultimate. Consumes 5% of Thanatos max hp when used.

Cost: 20/25/30/35/40 mana.

Cooldown: 13 seconds.
How to use: This is useful for chasing enemies in the threshold because your movement speed bonus increases by double, making it easy to secure the kill. This is also a great anti tank ability, because even if you built no physical penetration(which you probably should anyways), you are still a force to be reckoned with(for 6 seconds). This doesn't mean you should focus down any tanky god's, it's only 6 seconds and even at that, Thanatos is better off focusing squishy targets like mages.

3 - Soul Reap: Thanatos swings his scythe, dealing 100/150/200/250/300 (+60% of your physical power) physical damage and silencing enemies he hits for 0.5/.75/1.00/1.25/1.5s. Thanatos moves at a reduced rate while swinging. Consumes 5% of Thanatos max hp when used.

Cost: 25/30/35/40/45 mana.

Cooldown: 15 seconds.
How to use: This ability is amazing. It silences anyone it hits, which makes it great for engaging mages. although the duration doesn't last long, it is long enough for you to deal massive damage before the enemy can react fast enough. Use this whenever you want to gank an enemy as it will negate them from using an escape fast enough or push you away with a crowd control ability. This can also be good for hitting lane minions with it's wide range.

4 Ultimate - Hovering Death: Thanatos flaps his wings and goes airborne for 5s, unable to be hit. During this time, he can see through the Fog of War, moves unimpeded with 150% additional speed and can click to pounce to his target location, dealing 90/125/160/195/230 (+80% of your physical power) damage. Enemies below a 24/28/32/36/40% health threshold are instantly killed. All others are stunned for 1s. Consumes 10% of Thanatos max hp when used.

Cost: 40/50/60/70/80 mana.

Cooldown: 90 seconds.
How to use: This ability has more utility than you think, it can be used to engage, escape, secure kills, or even save teammates. It's main purpose is to secure kills when the enemy is in the threshold. It is best used on enemy tanks so that you don't have to deal with their heavy crowd control. you can also use it as an engage to stun unaware enemies and take down their hp while they are stunned, and can be comboed with your 3 to make them unable to use abilities for even longer. You can also use it as an escape because it cannot be interrupted by crowd control, however it is slow, so use it as soon as possible before dying. Lastly you can use it to save teammates by dropping down and stunning enemies while your teammate gets away, but make sure you can get away too if the enemy numbers are too big for you to handle.

Important things before starting.

Here's some things that should be noted when playing Thanatos in general:

Important tip: Thanatos(and pretty much most assassins) is very weak to crowd control, so stay far away from heavy crowd control. if the enemy team has large crowd control, build beads whenever you get the chance. Don't be afraid to use your ultimate as an escape, as it cannot be interrupted by crowd control.

Don't get too cocky if you are winning a fight, this build is all about waiting for the right moment to strike. As long as you are winning a fight, even if the enemy returns to base, it is still a victory. focus on pushing them back and making them return to base, this will give you time to buy items at base or deal damage to the tower(this should be noted when playing ANY god).

You do not need to buy potions with thanatos, You don't have to take my advice if you don't want to, but thanatos can keep his hp up with his 1, and his mana depletes much slower than every other god. If you are being harassed quite hard, don't be afraid to use your 1 on a minion, as it will give you hp for hitting the minion as well as killing it too.

Don't use your ultimate just to get a kill when it isn't necessary, Even if you successfully kill the target, it could leave you open to getting ambushed by the enemy team then you won't have an escape, so make sure you and the enemy are alone when using it, or at least make sure the enemy isn't too close to the enemy team for you to get pummeled.

If you are going for jungle buff, take the red buff early game and the orange or red buff mid-late game. The red buff will help you poke with your 1 and finish off enemies. and the orange buff will help you to box more efficiently, and engage or retreat.

If you are boxing near enemy minions, take out the minions while hitting the enemy god, the minions will sustain your hp, and are easy to hit because Thanatos' third hit hits everything in front of him.(very useful and can help you win most 1v1's). This also works for when boxing near jungle camps.(not recommended to box near jungle camps early game, but definitely late game when you get your critical strikes up.)

Don't worry too much about building penetration on Thanatos, his 2 will help him with that immensely when fighting warriors or guardians(You shouldn't even be focusing tanks anyways, just with your ultimate).

If you plan to engage an enemy god, make sure YOU strike first, 50% of the time that you die with Thanatos is because you didn't strike first. Fights with Thanatos usually take about 3-6 seconds late game if you are only fighting squishy targets due to how much damage is being dealt at late game, and engaging with your 3 can assure you that your target won't fight back half of the time.

Lastly, as an assassin, you should focus anyone squishy, specifically mages because your 3 can shut down mages easily with it's silence. you can try your best at boxing other assassins or hunters early on, but i wouldn't try it until you have a stronger build.

Shop/Abilities

Starting items/abilities:
At the shop, start off by buying a spiked gauntlet, boots and an Aegis amulet(for surviving enemy abilities). For your skills, start off with upgrading your 1 twice, and your 3 once. you will not need your 2 early on because you will not be engaging, and you will not need the extra penetration this early in the game. Other than that, just follow the skill sequence near the top of the guide.

Early-Mid game items: after saving up enough gold, finish of your spiked gauntlets into a Devourer's gauntlet. Next buy combat boots(DO NOT FINISH YOUR BOOTS YET)

Mid game items: Now is the time to decide between a few items depending on the majority of the enemy god's builds. Here is what you should build for which situation(The item sequences are also at the top of the guide).
Enemy PHYSICAL gods building Attack speed: Build a WitchBlade and Warrior Tabi.
Enemy gods building lifesteal: Build a Brawlers beatstick and Ninja Tabi.
If the majority of the enemy team's stats is even: Build Shifter's Shield and Warrior Tabi.

Late game items: Now that you have built your counter items, time for your finisher items. now that you will be focusing more on killing god's than laning, you will need more boxing potential. Immediately start building a Rage, then a balanced blade, then shortsword. with enough gold, finish your balanced blade into qin's sais, and your shortsword into a deathbringer. hopefully your team is winning, now you should be focusing their teams mages and hunters. engage with your 3, sustain with your 1, and take out the tank or remaining enemies with your ultimate.

Actives: I recommend Aegis Pendant for dodging abilities and retreating, Combat blink for engaging or escaping, or purification beads also for engaging or escaping. (i highly recommend bringing Aegis Pendant first, and you can choose between the other 2.)

Early game laning.

Now usually you will be going against a warrior in solo lane, but you never know. Warriors tend to have higher hp than most gods other than guardians, which is bait for your 1 since it deals high damage and 10% of the enemy god's HP. Typically warriors don't have many pokes, which is also good for your 1, so you can harass them all day.
since one of your early game items is a devourers gauntlet(read the "Shop/Abilities" chapter for item builds), you want to build those stacks as quickly as possible.

You won't be engaging the enemy god this early on due to the lack of your defensive capabilities. but as long as you keep throwing out your 1, you can sustain yourself without having to return to base.

Thanatos' mana depletes slower than any other god, so you wont need to buy potions, and as long as you poke your opponent's hp down, or dodge their abilities, they will be returning to base more often than you, giving you more time to take out their tower. Don't get to cocky though, the enemy jungler might surprise you every now and then, so keep your distance until they recall.

If you do get ambushed early on, immediately use your 3 to give you a bit of breathing space between the times they can use their abilities, and use your 1 to sustain you if you are close to the tower. If they continue to harass you inside the tower, just use the aegis amulet you bought and that should help you stall before the tower deals too much damage to them.

Mid game laning/ganking.

Around this time, you should be ganking mid lane whenever you can. if you do decide to gank, engage with your 3 immediately so that the enemy cannot use their abilities to either escape or react fast enough. then immediately use your 1 to slow them, and finally your 2 to chase them.(if they are in threshold, your 2 should keep you on them while they run away)
If you feel like you might not catch them, just harass them back to the tower and you can still call it a victory and you can either push their tower or go back to the solo lane.

Mid game is also a good time for you to engage your solo opponent more often. Instead of engaging with your 3, you should engage with your 1, because it will slow them to give you enough time to close the gap between you two, then immediately use your 3 so that they cannot push you back or use any escapes, and finally your 2 to chase them or run away if the enemy jungler is nearby.

P.S. if there are any nearby enemy gods within the threshold, use your ultimate. You can also use your ultimate to save teammates by using it to stun enemy gods and harass them down, but don't use it if the enemy team's numbers are too overwhelming for you to make an escape. If you are way ahead in kills, you can use your ultimate as an engage to stun anyone you like and kill them quickly, but only if your team is way ahead, that way if you die you wont feel as though you fed.

Late game laning/ganking/roaming.

Now is the time to go where you please(as long as you aren't losing), and kill whomever you please(even tanks, if they are the only one left).

This is where your ultimate comes in handy in any situation, as long as your team isn't losing you should use your ultimate to engage anyone that is squishy and use your 3 to silence their escapes. if you are boxing anyone, your 1 should sustain, while your 3 helps keep the enemy from using their abilities.

your 2 will help you chase anyone that runs, as well as take out pretty much anyone building armor, since this build only requires 1 penetration item, your 2 will automatically bring your penetration to the max 50%, making it easy to kill tanky warriors, and finish off the lonely tanks.

From here on out, it is up to you as to what you do, whether you push with your team, or assassinate any enemy gods, whatever brings your team to victory.

Hey got a question for you, what if we are facing a mage in the solo lane? Half of the time I would be facing Ao or Ra in the solo lane, sometimes chang'e or NuWa. Good question, ive went up against mages a few times like poseiden. Believe it or not, it's actually easier for me to fight a mage in the solo lane. Remember your 1 is your key to harassing the solo lane, even if you get poked by a mage, your 1 is stronger and heals back whatever you got poked with. As long as you can push back the lane opponent you can get some breathing room for farming. Here's a tip I use: wait for them to run out of mana. they will eventually have to go back to base unless they grabbed the mana buff, and when they do you should still have plenty of mana to sustain yourself. It's all about skill shotting your 1, this is why Thanatos is difficult to play, but done right he can be really annoying.

Edit: ALSO, don't forget you can use your 1 on minions to sustain yourself if YOU are being harassed, it's all about how much mana you and your opponent have, because a mage early game is nothing without his abilities.
