- all game modes, although there may be difficulty using this build in Conquest.
PROS:
- Death scythe is extremely strong against squishy targets early to mid game.
- With the help of Scent of Death, you can chase targets very easily, especially those in the death threshold.
- Decent life steal as long as you kill minions off
- Ultimate can be used as an escape, initiator, or a finishing move
CONS:
- Falls significantly in effectiveness late game
- Each of his abilities remove a small proportion of your health
- The delay in his Soul Reap can hinder him in combat
- Ultimate can be dodged somewhat easily or countered with actives
- If super low on hp, you will be unable to use any abilities
First of all, I would like to tell you straight off the bat that Thanatos just sucks for late game. Why? His scaling for his abilities and the abilities in general do not compete well against other assassins. Because of this, Thanatos can give people mixed feelings when considering to pick him in. Well I am here today to present to you a build that may help revive your hope back into this deathly god with the "IDC about Low Health" build.
Warrior Boots- Standard for all assassins that do not rely on attack speed.
Jotunn's Wrath- Again, another standard for ability reliant assassins.
Shifter's Shield- So now we go a bit off track to the usual assassin builds. Shifter's shield is great for Thanatos because he can go from 2000 hp to 800hp in an instant. Because of this, its important that we get moderate protections as well as buffs that help support our Thanatos from dying too easily.
Magi's Blessing- Almost every time you dive in with your ult, you're bound to face some CC up your face as people can easily disintegrate you if they manage to stop you with CC. It also offers a decent health buff with small amounts of protections for extra survival.
Titan's Bane- This one is completely optional unless there is a ruthless tank on the opposing team wrecking your entire team. Although it is more effective against brutes and tanks, it still gives you that extra penetration and damage necessary to take down any foes faster. Replacements for this item include: critical items and life steal items beneficial to you.
Hide of Nemean Lion- Ah. I already know what you are thinking. "But he's an assassin! He doesn't need to be built tanky!?" Yes, I know he's an assassin but this item is far more beneficial to you than you might think. If you noticed, one of the actives I included was Shield of the Underworld. Not only is this a mandatory active for this Thanatos build but it syenergizes super well with hide of nemean lion. To put it simply, this makes those who hurt you, get beaten the living **** out of it when the active and passive of nemean lion combine when you finish off you enemies. NO assassin can win against you in a 1 v 1 fight once this combo is active during the fight. Their only options include running away or get sent to hell for not doing so. This is the key item to help you, Thanatos the ****ty late gamer, be a force to reckon with late game.
Shield of the Underworld- As I mentioned above, this active is an important piece to the build. Although I stress its importance in combat, it can also serve as a damage mitigation to help you escape successfully with your ult. Your ult most likely will be countered very easily later in the game with aegis so its more likely to be used as a mean of escape.
I am a complete amateur at making guides so yeah. I do one day hope to be able to make decent guides in the future. Thanks for checking out my guide :D

The problem is if you build too tanky, the effect on hide of the nemean lion begins to wear off. You want them to do a decent amount of damage to you so you can pay them back with extra damage coming back at them. Hide of the Urchin is great for bruisers yes, but as I mentioned above, it may just backfire onto the whole overall build.
Leveling for Thanatos is of course completely up to you but you just want the extra punch to fend off enemies. For conquest, it may be ideal to level Scent of Death first but for other game modes such as siege and joust, its more important to finish off your opponent quickly since the playing field is much smaller and chasing may lead to your demise.
Again, this is may just be my play style that I find suitable but I will try and test whether Hide of the Urchin is viable for this build
Second, you're on the right track with Hide of the Nemean Lion. Since, as you said, Thanatos doesn't scale well into the late game, he's much better built into a tanky bruiser than a nuker. Maybe a Hide of the Urchin instead of a Titan's Bane? Otherwise, nicely done. I've seen some level Scent of Death before Soul Reap, but that's personal preference.
