This build is something I am used to. What Thanatos lacks in weak defense and using his life, he must make up with attack speed and life steal. Those two together and having critical chance with attack penetration is his greatest ally.
Something that you must always watch is his health if he is below at least 10% he won't be able to use his ultimate and makes it risky to use his other abilities. His ultimate is a risk/high reward chance.
He can handle most characters easily alone without friends backing you up but remember to always watch your back when alone and always watch your health.
His 1st and 3rd ability is your bff in the whole match. I'm pretty sure if you know how to play him you should know this but to new players who want to test him I'll tell you why. I'm going to explain his 2nd, ultimate, passive abilities on how they work just in case for the new players.
His first ability is a long range hit that takes 5% of your max hp but from your damage the you dealt to the target you get 75% of it to heal you.
His second ability is a buff which gives immunity to slow and additional movement speed and physical penetration. The movement speed is doubled when moving to an enemy God which is within his instant kill health threshold of ultimate. You can use this run the underworld away.
His third ability is a cone hit which cases silence on your target(s) and also takes 5% of your max hp.
His ultimate ability is his life saver and a risk taker. You can move while doing this so don't just stand still. With this you can save friends or stun you enemies if you can land the hit. This is an instant kill when they have a red skull on them and they are shown all over the map so it's useful when you are in a party with friends or with strangers.
Finally his passive is that whenever you deal the killing blow to your enemies he heals based on the enemies max hp (20% from gods and 10% from minions) and also reduces his active cooldowns.
Well I hope this helps you out and try to leave a review for cause I'm actually nervous that it sucks but oh well have fun and SMITE YOUR ENEMIES TO THEIR GRAVES FELLOW GODS OF DEATH!

That being said, in the early game Thanatos is an absolute beast- and I think you should take advantage of that fact- I would suggest taking typical Warrior Tabi over Ninja Tabi (for additional power), and swapping Asi with Jotunn's Wrath in regard of purchase order. That way you'll be dealing tremendous ability damage in the early game, and later you can focus on auto-attacks more.
