Introduction

WARNING: SEASON 3 HAS DROPPED ON PC. This means I'll be slowly adding a new build and information explaining it as I test out item combinations. The items in the new Season 3 build are likely to change as I experiment and the explanation of the build is likely going to take a while to get done as the build changes. In case you want to follow my train of thought as I work out the new build, here are some notes:

Season 3 Notes

Welcome, Smiters, my name is Goldenwolf and I'm here to deliver to you my first guide, centering around a god I never expected to main. Fenrir was my one love until I gave The Monkey King a try and found my true calling.

My God Stats

And I can give a lot of credit to this build.

Sun Wukong is a god ripe with potential for utterly demoralizing your enemies. In order to achieve this, however, he must be built and played in a way that I have seen very few players adapt.

Granted, not many people play as our monkey friend anyways, which is sad considering how terrifying he can be.

Hopefully this guide will show you how to be an unstoppable destructive force in any situation, as this build has been tested in Conquest (both mid and solo lane), 3v3 Joust, Seige, and Arena, and has not let me down yet.

Now, let's get on with Sun's strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Like every god, Sun Wukong has his ups and downs. Understanding these is important to understanding how the items in this build highlight his strengths and compensate for his weaknesses.

Strengths:
  • Multiple escapes from battle make Sun Wukong hard to kill
  • Can deal a large amount of damage while still being a tank, due in a large part to Undefeated Body
  • Quick and effective lane clearing ability thanks to The Magic Cudgel and Master's Will

Weaknesses:
  • Very low mana at beginning of game
  • Low sustain due to lack of mana without aid and only an ultimate to heal him
  • 72 Transformations can be hard to use quickly and requires a lot of practice
  • CC can still hit and affect you while in your 72 Transformations

Undefeated Body

Sun Wukong's passive is key to why he is capable of staying alive for so long. The increased protections and critical strike chance when at low health give you the opportunity to survive an extra hit or two that you normally wouldn't have or beat down a god with basic attacks while on the brink of death. By far one of the most infuriating things in Smite is to see an enemy that just killed you with a health bar that looks almost empty. This is The Monkey King's specialty.

The Magic Cudgel

Your basic poke move, The Magic Cudgel is the best way to get under the skin of whoever you are laning against. The Cudgel has a range that will make any mages and hunters you are against hang a little further back than they would like to. Although many people think that 72 Transformations should be leveled up first because of the damage it does, I think that this skill should be leveled up first. It does good damage, allowing you to cut out a nice chunk of health from your adversary, making them keep their distance, as well as clear waves of minions as a startling rate, thanks to the 25% more damage minions take from this attack, ultimately giving you the upper hand in the laning phase.

Master's Will

Your second ability is a powerful Area of Effect(AOE) attack that also slows any god it hits. For laning purposes, this is best used after you use you cudgel the line of minions to clear up any of the melee minions that survive your first strike. As far as god killing goes, always use this right after you stun anyone with the tiger version of your 72 Transformations, as it will keep the enemy from getting away quickly, allowing you to keep hitting them, finally finishing them off with The Magic Cudgel if your basic attacks weren't enough.

72 Transformations

The most versatile ability Sun Wukong has, 72 Transformations gives you the ability to knock-up an enemy, stun an enemy, or escape from/chase an enemy. The bull form allows for the knock-up which, admittedly, is really only useful in team fights for knocking up multiple enemies at once, giving your allies more time to take them down. The tiger form is your main way to initiate a fight with an enemy god. It does massive amounts of damage while also stunning your opponent, allowing for you or your allies to burst them down. BE WARNED: this can hit minions and if it does, you will be taken out of tiger form, having essentially wasted the ability. Lastly, your eagle form is your main way of escaping an otherwise deadly situation. You are given a major speed boost and become untouchable by basic attacks (some abilities can still hit you if aimed properly). Although it's main use is escape, you can use it to hunt down an enemy if you're feeling especially bloodthirsty.

Somersault Cloud

Lastly, your ultimate. This is one of my favorite abilities in Smite. When activated, Sun Wukong becomes immune to Crowd Control(CC) as he charges up, while still being able to move, for a second. He then leaps onto a cloud in the air, invisible to the enemy, and summons a decoy that charges at enemy gods, attacking with basic attacks. As you are in the cloud, you regenerate an absurd amount of health and can aim yourself to leap back down into the fight, dealing AOE damage. If the decoy dies, you are revealed on your cloud and your intention of where you want to leap is easy to see. This is another way Wukong can escape death. He can ult, heal, and then either leap back into the fight or out of it, depending on how confident you are in your ability to finish it. My favorite use for this is tower diving after a low-health enemy, as your decoy will tank the tower hits and you can leap down on the god and escape with your 72 Transformations.

Items

Ok so I've decided to put the explanations for the Season 2 build items into a spoiler so that when I start explaining the Season 3 build, the guide won't be miles long.

Season 2 Build Explanation

Season 3 Build Explanation

Will start this section once I'm satisfied with the new build. Shouldn't be too long.

Counter-Building in League - Joust

It is always important to change up and customize your build to counter whichever god you are playing against. Since, in most game modes, the enemy team will have a combination of magical and physical characters, this build will normally cover all your bases and keep you alive against whatever combination your enemy throws at you. But League Joust is an entirely different animal. League Joust pits you against one god and one god only, letting you and your opponent fight to the death in an epic duel. It is vital that you change your build based on what type of damage they do as well as what protections they are building.

Luckily this isn't too difficult to do by switching around the items I've listed above.

If you are against a magical character, such as a guardian or mage, simply replacing the Hide of the Urchin with the Stone of Gaia should be sufficient to keep you alive. I would recommend keeping the other items that give you physical protection since the minions, towers, phoenixes, and titan all do physical damage, and you may find yourself in a situation where you want to tower dive to take down the tower or the god cowering under it.

If you are against a physical character, such as an assassin, hunter, or warrior, replacing the Hide of the Urchin with the Hide of the Nemean Lion or Mystical Mail will remove the unnecessary magical protections on the Hide of the Urcin and replace them with big physical protections. Which chestplate you pick is really personal preference. I would recommend that you pick up the Hide of the Nemean Lion when against hunters, since they mostly rely on their basic attacks to kill, and get the Mystical Mail when against a warrior or assassin since they tend to use more abilities for killing, although it is really up to you to decide which would help you more since each god is different and a different chestplate might work better in different situations.

Lastly, when it comes to countering the protections your enemy is building, you don't have much work to do. Since most gods will build physical protections against you (because you're a physical character) the penetration in Jotunn's Wrath and [Titan's Bane]] should be enough to get through. If not, you can sacrifice the extra mana of Jotunn's Wrath for the increased penetration of the Brawler's Beat Stick.

Game Progression

And now onto how you should play Sun Wukong with this build throughout the different phases of the game.

Early Game - Laning Phase:

Stay in your lane. For this first phase of the game, maintaining lane presence is key. And as long as you have mana potions or a mana camp buff, Sun Wukong is great at dominating a lane. Since you are leveling up The Magic Cudgel first, you will have infuriating poking abilities that will clear the lane faster than your enemy expected and can cause damage to the enemy god at ranges they wouldn't have expected. As you go through your build, the Reinforced Greaves and Hide of the Urchin will give you the extra health and mana, along with some CC reduction to counter any such abilities the god you're laning against may have. Your opponent will start to get frustrated as they realize how difficult it is to kill you and will probably begin to lose confidence and start to play more defensively, giving you more lane control. REMEMBER: Use your ultimate if you are low on health or want to take down a tower. You can hop up and heal and hop right back into the fight with plenty of health or you can fire off a decoy to tank a weak tower and land to finish it off.

Mid Game - Ganking Phase:

Around level 10, lane assignments will begin to dissolve and people will stray from their lanes to catch enemy gods off guard. If you were winning in your lane and maybe even got a tower down, you should break off and help your teammates kill gods whenever they ask for help or you see an enemy with low health on the minimap. Rush out from the jungle in your tiger form of your 72 Transformations to stun an enemy when your teammates are ready and you can combine abilities to melt the enemy's health. You should still return to your lane every now and then because your teammates will be breaking off from their lanes too and might come help you keep the enemy in your lane from gaining too much ground while you are gone. If you had been losing your lane, now is when you'll probably get some relief as your teammates will come in to help push back your adversary.

Late Game - Team Fight Phase:

Finally, when people begin to finish their builds and towers begin to fall more frequently, you and your team should start to work as a pack, hunting down the enemy team and working as a cohesive unit. This environment is where Sun Wukong thrives. He can launch into the enemy team with his bull form of 72 Transformations and knock up as many enemies as he can hit, then follow it up with Master's Will, basic attacks, The Magic Cudgel, and lastly his Somersault Cloud to heal and chase down any fleeing enemies. The knock up is especially helpful because it gives your teammates time to close the gap and CC the enemy team with their own abilities and break them apart. Also, when you go after the enemy team's remaining towers and phoenixes, you'll probably be able to tank them without minions if you've kept up in level and have your complete build. Sun Wukong at this point in the game is a deadly tank that will mop up kills for himself and set up kills for his teammates late game.

Conclusion

Many people underestimate Sun Wukong, not giving him the attention he deserves. He is a great god that can be a bully in lane and a nuisance in team fights if used properly.

This build is one I haven't seen before since I basically pulled in different ideas from different guides and sources to put this together to create what I believe to be the perfect Sun Wukong guide.

I'm sure people will disagree but I just wanted to put this out to let people try out a new build for Sun Wukong and see if they have as much success as I have with him. I would love to see more people play him and I hope I helped convince you guys that he shouldn't be benched so quickly.

Thanks for reading!

Hey I played Sun Wukong for the first time today and I used your build I went 8/4/23. I usually play as Ravana or Ra so it took some getting used to. The only thing I changed was added the devourers gauntlet for some lifesteal. I am also still kind of new to this game. Great build though.

I agree, waiting to do a full overhaul of the guide until season 3 drops. The way I have been playing Wukong recently, I'll buy beads if who I'm laning against has a good cc move and HoG if they don't. Teleport has become my main second active that I tend to pick up when I recall for the first time. HoG is still nice for clearing the mana camp fast if your jungler is preoccupied and I try to get it so long as I'm not laning against someone like Xing Tian or Ravana, who can cc you pretty hard.

HoG is unnecessary. Teleport can be a much better option as a solo laner.

Just used this to build my Sun Wu Kong. After using the build I went from very mixed results to almost (1 game against a team that worked together very well) always having a positive K/D and winning every match I played in. Great guide with lots of details and very good observations/hints (like using the ultimate as a heal or to an escape or to tank enemy towers; tried all three). I knew I wanted to play Sun Wu King just because I loved the character, but this makes it so I can actually play him and contribute to a team and win.
