Introduction

This is a Chang'e duel/solo build. Although viable as a support build because "She's a healer," build her like a tank ONLY if your team is comfortable and you are comfortable with the god. I will admit that I did not feel comfortable with her support until Diamond rank. This is because the lack of a tank may cause your team to suffer late game when trying to dive enemy towers or enemies hiding out in a phoenix. Try to take a mid/solo role with this build if playing Conquest. PLEASE DO NOT BUILD THIS IF GOING SUPPORT.

As always, leave suggestions, tell me my build is horrid, and other normal things. Tell me if you would like a Conquest guide for Chang'e solo. Also, if you have time I would love to hear your stories with Chang'e, she is my favorite character in SMITE by far.

Pros / Cons

Pros:

+Amazing mobility
+An immunity to all CC and damage
+An anti-healer heal
+A 'stunning' ultimate: It even chains!
+A decent poke
+A decent team heal
+Can stay in lane forever due to Jade Rabbit
+Great chasing potential
+Cute little bunny to keep you company when alone ( You even get to name him! )
+Great tower diver (in Duel)

Cons:

-VERY VERY Squishy
-Useless if abilities are on cooldown
-Incredibly mana hungry
-Cannot easily escape a jungler's gank at level 5
-Horrible to play against
-Bunny gets addicted to so many drugs ( Chang'e Moonlight Love Skin )

Early Game-Duel

Chang'e should start out with buying Vampiric Shroud for the health, MP5, and Magical Power. Get Power pot, otherwise known as Potion of Magical Might, and three Mana Potion. At the 15 second mark before the minion wave spawns, use the Potion of Magical Might, then buy two Healing Potion. Go to Mana Camp, wait until 7 seconds after the minion wave spawns, then buy a Healing Potion from your Jade Rabbit. Use a Healing Potion as soon as you start the Mana Camp, and clear it. Get to lane as fast as possible. As soon as your bunny gets back, send him to go get another Healing Potion, and repeat sending him back for potions all game unless you can buy a tier 2 or 3 item. If you want to be safe, just buy Vampiric Shroud, Shoes, and 4 of both Healing Potion and Mana Potion, and follow the same steps to clearing Mana Camp and the wave.

In lane, poke your enemy with your Crescent Moon Dance and heal up any minion damage you take with your Moonflower Dance. Try to hit the enemy with that as well, especially if they bought lifesteal of if they have a heal. As soon as you are level five, make sure your abilities are always hitting the enemy, and as soon as you know you can secure a kill, use Waxing Moon and Crescent Moon Dance to kill your enemy. Don't be afraid to use Sprint and tower dive them: That is the beauty of her Moonlit Waltz. Kill them, and waltz out with first blood.

Mid Game-Duel

Chang'e is very powerful mid game, after she obtains Book of Thoth. She easily has 300 damage on her Crescent Moon Dance and a 200 heal on her Moonflower Dance. Just keep pressure on your opponent until you feel that they will die from your ult+1 combo. Make sure they don't get Fire Giant, or take one of your towers. It is very hard to recover if you lose your objectives first. Secure your kills, keep them away from towers, and stop any Fire Giant attempts to help secure an easy win. Make sure to take at least one of their objectives by now to keep pressure on their phoenix, or if you steal Fire Giant and kill them, it will allow for you to take their phoenix.

Late Game-Duel

This is where Chang'e shines bright and becomes unstoppable. You can dive towers, do damage to the phoenix, and waltz out. After a few waves, the phoenix will be dead and the immense amount of damage that Chang'e has will appear. Any slightly squishy enemy that has not bought magical protections will INSTANTLY die from a ult+1+3 combo with full items. Even if they somehow survived via Sanctuary, just use Sprint to catch up and use Crescent Moon Dance to clean up the kill and secure your victory by killing the titan. If you bought Gem of Isolation, late game will be much easier. Bait an enemy by appearing to have low health, and once the get close enough, use Moonflower Dance to heal 400 and then use Waxing Moon and Crescent Moon Dance to kill them. If this backfires, run to either your tower or Fire Giant. If you chose Fire Giant, wait for them to hit it, then heal and Sprint away, using Moonlit Waltz if something is headed your way. Lead them on a chase around the map. In 30 seconds, you will have full health and can turn around and kill them.

Skills

Jade Rabbit is one of the best passives in the game. It allows her to use the store from anywhere on the map ( except in Assault ), allowing her to stay in lane indefinitely and have a constant stream of wards to know exactly where the enemy is at all times. As amazing as it is, there is more. She gains a 25% movement speed on ALL of her abilities when in use!
Crescent Moon Dance is her wave clear. It does a decent amount of damage, but it has an insanely short cooldown. It gives her a decent poke to whittle their health down to get them to where your jungler (Conquest) can gank them for a secured kill. If you win your lane, level this first to have better damage and poke. If losing lane BADLY, level this second to survive until endgame ( Level Moonflower Dance first if that is the case).
Moonlit Waltz is one of the greatest escapes in the game. A 25% movement speed buff for the 1.2 second duration of the dance. That's it? No. It gives her an immunity to all damage sources, including CC and basic attacks. But wait, there is more! She gains mana back for each tick of damage from an ability and every basic attack that should have hit her. I get the first level of this and then level this last, as it does not increase the duration, but the amount of mana restored.
Moonflower Dance is her sustain. It gives a little amount of healing early game, with long cooldowns. However, by late game on a short cooldown of 6 seconds, it can heal 400+ health (end game) much faster than Hel. I level this up second for the sustain needed to survive the jungler's gank at level five. Waxing Moon/ Moonlit Waltz alone will not save you in an attack, especially if they are on cooldown. If you are losing lane horribly, I strongly advise leveling this up first, as it increases the chance that you will be able to stay in lane all game, farming.
Waxing Moon is her wonderful ultimate. It has an amazing amount of damage on it, a chain stun for up to 5 seconds, and a 25% movement speed buff ( useful for hitting people who are on the rim of your ultimate ). A nice escape if no others exist as well. This ability can turn the tide of a battle in a moment.

Items- Power

Chronos' Pendant is a NECESSARY item on Chang'e for the power and 30% cooldown it gives when combined with Shoes of Focus. It allows her abilities to be spammed for days. However, if playing against a powerful melee god, such as Bellona, you should switch it out for the Breastplate of Valor to have protections against her relentless attacks.
Shoes of Focus is always a great, reliant way for a mage to get mana and good CDR. This is better than Shoes of the Magi for Chang'e as she needs the mana and cooldown that Shoes of Focus gives, and allows her to spam her abilities more often.
Book of Thoth is a great stacking item that gives an immense boost in power and gives her the mana she needs to stay in the battle. I find that when I do not build this item, I run out of mana right before I get a kill. The power rivals that of Rod of Tahuti and Spear of Desolation and gives 15 MP5. Switch it out with Warlock's Sash if you like being healthy, with the loss of mana sustain and about 100 Magical Power.
Obsidian Shard is a good amount of power and great penetration. It gives you the penetrations needed to take objectives easily, due to its passive that gets rid of a third of the objective's protections. Replace this with Spear of Desolation if the opponent buys no Magical Protection items.(It does happen)
Gem of Isolation is a great item on Change because of the great amount of chase potential it gives. All abilities chained together can make the slow last about 10 seconds in a row, which is amazing for catching up or keeping an opponent in place. The health, mana, and decent magical power make this an item to notice. However, if there is a magical opponent, replace this with magical protections as the protections will serve you better than the health and slow.
Rod of Tahuti is an amazing addition to any mage and gives that immense boost of power that she needs to have considerable amounts of damage and heal. It makes her do approximately 25% more damage just with the passive.

Item- Physical Gods

Chronos' Pendant is a NECESSARY item on Chang'e for the power and full cooldown it gives when combined with Breastplate of Valor. It allows her abilities to be spammed for days.
Shoes of the Magi is a good item for the power, penetration, and movement speed it provides. You need this item to make up for the lost power from buying protections instead of Gem of Isolation.
Breastplate of Valor is an amazing phsical protection item and allows full CDR with this build. It makes it so the enemy must buy penetration to do anything against you if they are physical.
Rod of Tahuti is an amazing addition to any mage and gives that immense boost of power that she needs to have considerable amounts of damage and heal. It makes her do approximately 25% more damage just with the passive.

Alternative Item Choices

warlock's sash Warlock's Sash is a very safe, healthy version of Book of Thoth. It gives significantly less Magical Power, Mana, and MP5 for much more health (+600). Buy this if you are against a high burst character such as He Bo or Loki.
Spear of Desolation is a high damage, luxury penetration item that has a passive that if you kill a god, all your cooldowns are reduced by 8 seconds. It gives 5 less Magical Power than Rod of Tahuti, so it is a very powerful item. Buy this only if the enemy is physical and has bought no Magical Protections to maximize its damage.
Void Stone is a low cost penetration/protection item that is cheap and good for shredding magical characters protections if they have bought no Magical protections. Buy this only if the enemy is Magical and has bought absolutely no protection items.
Pestilence is a great anti-healer item to pick up if against a Hel, Aphrodite, or any other magical healer. It gives a great amount of Magical Protections as well.
Bulwark of Hope is an all around great item that gives a shield after dropping below a certain health threshold. It gives an amazing amount of Magical Protections, Health, and Crowd Control Reduction. Buy this against all other Magical gods besides the healers.
Hide of the Nemean Lion is an amazing item against any auto attack god (maybe not the best against Chronos, but what is really good against him?) Hunters really struggle against this item due to its counter to the effects of lifesteal. Pick it up against all Assassins or Hunters.

Good Matchups/ Bad Matchups (Duel)

Good Matchups- Opponents you forgot to ban:

Freya

...is always a pain. However, Chang'e can very easily dodge her high burst from Polynomicon and burst her just as hard. As soon as her abilities are down, no matter what stage of the game, hunt her down and slaughter her like a pig with your short cooldowns. She cannot escape you. EVER. Feel your victory, take it in. Or just get slaughtered by Freya because you time Moonlit Waltz wrong.

Loki

A high burst character, Loki seems like a worthy ban. However, he is all based on a SINGLE basic attack ( Vanish and Aimed Strike combo), so he is easy to avoid, and once he hits you once during Moonlit Waltz, he is open to a barrage of attacks, and will have to hide in tower, giving you a lead and a push that will give you a victory. All game should be a breeze unless you cannot time your Moonlit Waltz correctly. Keeped him poked and you should do fine.

He Bo

Arguably the highest burst damage character in the game, why is He Bo on the good matchups? That is because you have cooldowns as short as he does. His 2000 damage ult is easily avoidable by your Moonlit Waltz, and then he is vulnerable. Do not buy Gem of Isolation against him, as his scroll makes him immune to slows. Instead, buy your good friend, Bulwark of Hope, and make his damage drop immensly. Early game, poke him until level 5, then ult and kill him if he is under half health. His escape is horrid until late game, so take advantage. Late game, poke him until he has to leave his phoenix to go heal, and then attack and take the phoenix. As soon as you take phoenix, you have almost always secured a win.

Bastet

Her ultimate Cat Call is probably the most annoying Level 5 ult in the game. Her cats will devour you even under tower, so pick up Sanctuary or Sprint to escape devastation. However, Early Game, Bastet has terrible wave clear, so take advantage until Level 5. Then, stay close to your tower because her Cat Call will kill you otherwise. Mid Game, make sure you keep up with her, and make sure you stun her cats if she unleashes them. This should help with your escape and keep you alive. This sounds like a terrible matchup so far, so why did I put Bastet here? Well, Bastet has a mediocre late game fighting-potential compared to Chang'e. You can now kill her cats with ease and can turn the tide of the battle in your favor. She will try to backdoor your Tower and Phoenix with Cat Call, so make sure to buy some Wards. Kill her and take her Phoenix if she tries to 1v1 you. Then, push her to the Titan and kill her for the victory.

Balanced Matchup- Opponent you forgot to ban

Kali

The burst on Kali will outshine you every time. Your best chance is to try to kill her before level 5. If you do, the first blood will spiral you to victory. Until late game. Hope they surrender before then. If not, buy Gem of Isolation so her movement speed items become useless, and she cannot catch you during her ult. Ult her to give you some space from her and run to the nearest tower for your life. If you can't, try to whittle her health down until she ults. Hit her with Moonflower Dance and she only heals 7.5% of her health, then chase her until Crescent Moon Dance comes up again and slaughter her. Make sure you take her phoenix for her death, and you may pull a victory.

Bad Matchups- Opponents you fogot to ban:

Chronos

No need to explain. Why didn't you ban him? IT'S Chronos!!!

Bakasura

A menace, he will butcher you (punny) and will devour you faster than a minion at every stage of the game. Please ban him. His damage output, cone basic attacks Regurgitate, and tower dive potential are astonishing. Don't believe me? Skip banning him a game, and you will see what I am saying. Your best chance is to poke him, but sit safely in the tower and farm until late game. If he was bad and didn't buy magical protections, then you can punish him and kill him with your 4,1, and 3 combo. Then you can take your loss and instead turn it into the most unlikely victory ever. You have a better chance beating a Chronos than Bakasura.

Ah Muzen Cab

You doubt my power? You will not doubt Ah Muzen Cab power after your first game against him. (In my opinion, Ah Muzen Cab is the absolute king of Duel due to his insane mobility, extreme damage, amazing wave clear, and ridiculously simple play style.) He will butcher you every stage of the game. No matter how hard you try, he will always be faster and more powerful. Early game will seem a breeze, until level 8 or so when he gains instant wave clear. Mid and Late game are tough, all you can hope for is he fails in getting Fire Giant and you steal and kill him. That is your only chance. Take phoenix, and hold out as long as possible until he makes a terrible mistake so you can win.

Hou Yi

Wow. Hou Yi is an absolute menace in Duel, all the time, every time. Since the Throwing Dagger buff, hunters have been the supreme rulers in Duel. Hou Yi is one of the most dangerous. He can easily slaughter you at Level 5. But I have noticed that as long as you dodge the Ricochet, he cannot secure damage. If he builds Frostbound Hammer, just sell Book of Thoth and buy Gem of Isolation so he is just as fast as you. Whittle his health down early game, don't be afraid to take a little minion damage. Make sure he stays in lane to Level 5, and once he is below half health, use Waxing Moon, Crescent Moon Dance, and if he is still alive, finish him with Moonflower Dance. Make sure all abilities are up and you are secured with first blood if you land your ult. Late Game you just keep pressure, take the phoenix at any cost, even your life, and the win should be in your grasp.

I love your Chang'e guide. Chang'e is easily one of my mains and I am absolutely in love with her. Your guide is amazing and it really opens my eyes with how it interacts with my own guide because you have such strong points. I mainly go for damage and don't worry about protections unless absolutely necessary. I hope you write more guides, I'd love to read more.

How do you play this game?

Zilby (132) | April 5, 2016 1:38am
I just realized why you can't use Soul Reaver this season. In season 2, if you built power you could go for an all in attack with Soul Reaver and Greater Purification, proc the soul reaver, use your 3->1 combo, then use beads to get the 3s CDR, then do another 1->4->3->1 combo. Because those abilities cancelled into each other you could do the whole combo very quickly and burst people down, oftentimes even if they built defensively, but without the 3s beads cooldown (and also in part due to the nerf to Spear of the Magus which worked great with that combo on people that didn't build defenses) that's impossible.

Your analysis that this season is more about mobility and control makes a lot of sense given that Chang'e's burst potential was nerfed to a large degree with those item changes. Soooooo I guess Gem of Isolation may be a core item then! There's the proof of my pudding from my last comment, sticking to your guns enlightened me in ways I didn't expect!

Sorry, Branmuffin17, that is something i wrote last season. I actually started this guide in November of last year, so I need to fix that. Thanks a lot!

I tested your ideas, Zilby, and found that against a He Bo without protections is very vulnerable to attacks with Void Stone compared to Obsidian Shard. It is not overall as useful as Obsidian Shard to me, so I put it under alternatives. However, I personally don't like the passive coowldown on Soul Reaver, as many people play hunters or gods with lifesteal/heal that will just negate the damage after a wave, for example the Hou Yi I tested it out against earlier just healed due to the passive of Asi. Last season, I bought it often, but this season (personally) is about mobility and control, so that leads me to Gem of Isolation(I really love that item, If you can't tell :D ). Zilby, I really value your opinion, and I always test out these ideas myself before I put them in my guide. To me, most of your suggestions make sense and are even part of my build when I am counter-building, I just don't realize it. (Don't know if that was what you were saying :D )

Just thought I'd mention that you and others should always try to hold your points unless you truly know that what someone else is saying is correct. Occasionally I have no idea what I'm talking about, and honestly I sincerely love it when people bring up things that I hadn't thought of. Blindly accepting advice isn't nearly as helpful to you becoming a better player as discussing points of contention. Just thought I'd note that after reading Bran's comments, sorry that it doesn't really have anything to do with your guide :P

Great first guide, SilenceCalls. Good explanations for item choices and abilities, as well as some info on matchups. Read your back-and-forth discussion with Zilbster. You both have good points, and it's good that you hold on some of your points with some reasoning.

+1

Edit: oh one thing...you mention that Chronos' Pendant is a necessary item (which is true) but that it provides full cooldown in combination with Shoes of Focus (which isn't true...only gets you to 30%). Just a minor thing but thought I'd mention.

Zilby (132) | April 3, 2016 6:55pm
@Silence, you raise some very good points!
  1. I'm not used to the curse meta, but what you said makes since, that would change the starting dynamic. Obviously Shoes are a worse start unless you die, but with this meta setting yourself on the defensive with that active around would probably doom you.

  2. I still think that you're missing an important aspect of joust in regards to Gem of Iso. If you're winning all of your engages, then Gem of Isolation is going to be the best choice since it allows you to finish off your enemies, however if your engages are close, it's oftentimes best to wait things out and use items like Soul Reaver to give you an edge. You can pressure enemies into situations where they're forced to either fight, or run away and get a huge disadvantage (eg: pressuring bull buff, defending towers, etc). If you pressure enemies in those ways, you don't really need to be able to force them to stick around most of the time since they're forced to either fight or lose. Regardless, I don't think it's a bad item, I just think it's not really core per se.

  3. Spear of Desolation when you run the numbers should still make a slightly bigger difference than Void Stone simply due to the huge power it has, even without giving you extra magic defense. However, the price difference doesn't really justify the stat difference most of the time, Void Stone is almost a full item's worth of gold cheaper.

  4. Matchups are going to vary with playstyle and personal experience, I just thought I'd share mine :P

Thanks Zilby! Your Chang'e guide helped me out last season, so thank you.

1. I realize that it is very risky to buy Potion of Magical Might, but as long as you don't stand in front of the person and get shot by the entire minion wave, you shouldn't die easily due to the increased health from Vampiric Shroud, and you should have full health when going to lane( I explained that as soon as you start the Mana Camp, you should use a health pot and send bunny back for another.) The increased waveclear and damage personally helps me early game and makes her big issue early game (wave clear) go away. You have increased heal, and after a wave or two, you should have Moonlit Waltz, and your bunny should be fetching health pots early game so you don't die. I wish Shoes actually gave you magical power, but it does not. I normally find you must be aggresive with Chang'e this season to survive due to Curse.

2.Sorry, I found Gem of Isolation to be really good at pinning an enemy down, because if you buy Curse, the enemy is going to buy Sprint. My idea is then, 1. You Sprint. 2.Chase them. 3. Their Sprint wears out. 4. You proc Gem of Isolation 5. There is no escaping me now! :D My old build contained Soul Reaver until someone commented in game that I would have won faster with any item that doesn't have a passive cooldown of 60 seconds. That is when I stopped building Soul Reaver and built Gem of Isolation instead. I find that if she builds to many protection items, her damage falls off, but I see your point; you should build Hide of the Nemean Lion against hunters.

3. I put you should only buy Spear of Desolation if the opponent buys no magical protections. The power it has will almost always outshine the damage/penetrations of Void Stone, unless I am doing my math wrong.

4. I tried all of those against Hel, but she just builds the same exact build as me. As soon as the healing reduction is down from Moonflower Dance, she just sits in the tower for a few seconds and heals everything. And I just die because my damage cannot rival hers. Ever. This is for me personally, she is definitely not first ban, but is a pain for me. He Bo was an absolute nightmare for me as I forgot to ban him as Bastet and I went 0/7. Insta kill in the fountain is not okay. Ulted me, used Sanctuary, and walked out and killed the titan. Stopped every leap of mine, the leap that would have killed him every time. So, instead of going 7/0, i went 0/7. I was so afraid of him, I skipped banning Hou Yi as Chang'e. I freaked out, but I built how I normally did and went 8/2. Never have banned him since, and have fought at about 10 of them and have not lost. I do not know what changed, but Hou Yi does not do well against Chang'e unless he buys Frostbound Hammer, and then you would counter with Gem of Isolation. His Ricochet is only really effective in the camp walls or down the bridge that is between lane and Fire Giant. It might be just me, but who knows? I forgot to ban He Bo a week ago, and I started to just accept my loss. I got to wave and killed him before the 1:00 mark. Ouch. I went 6/0 because every time, I predicted his ult, waltzed out, and killed him when he was vulnerable. He Bo late game, is always a nightmare though, so hope he surrenders at the 10:00 mark like this one did.

Hey Silence.
I played a lot of ranked joust S2 with Chang'e, managed to claw my way up to diamond only using her. This is a really good guide! Still thought I'd share some advice on things I picked up along the way.
  • For your start, just take note that buying Potion of Magical Might is a risky endeavor. If you make any mistakes during the beginning and die (which given Chang'e's very low health pool at the start and her lack of Moonlit Waltz until level 4 is not that hard) it sets you back an additional 450 gold which pretty much guarantees a loss unless you dominate the rest of the game. Alternatively you can just buy Shoes and health and mana pots right out the start and play really defensively, get boots when you can and sustain the lane.
  • Gem of Isolation is a decent item, but isn't usually the best, especially if you get sprint and curse, you're already controlling the movement speed of the game a LOT. I could definitely see getting more defense items in your build, sometimes investing in 2 isn't a bad idea since it can really abuse the protections you get against a single type opponent. Things like Hide of the Nemean Lion are great against hunters. Alternatively, if you really do want power, Soul Reaver can give you just that extra bit of burst you need to win an engage.
  • The way protections numbers work, I still wouldn't recommend grabbing Spear of Desolation. A lot of its price is just for its passive which won't be used ever. The only context I can see not getting Obsidian Shard is if an opponent is a mage (ie: base 30 magical defense) and doesn't buy any protections, in which case you could replace it with something like Shoes of the Magi and Void Stone which would reduce their protections to nothing.
  • I'm not sure about your matchups section, I've beaten every Hel I've come across. You need Divine Ruin + Pestilence and the actives you mentioned and usually it's not a problem. He Bo I personally hate fighting against, but that might just be me (I just really hate that god). Hou Yi was an incredibly hard matchup last season, but that was in part because the joust map gave his Ricochet really great angles to work with, so maybe the dynamic has changed.

In any case, great guide! +1 from me.

Thanks a lot, nanoyam!

I personally also build Obsidian Shard 4th or 5th, but I felt some would rather wait until mid /late game to buy penetrations as that is most likely when you begin your final assault on the phoenix. Opponents also seem to buy protections 4th or 5th, so Obsidian Shard would be best put on mid/late game, right? I feel building stacks is important, so maybe build Obsidian Shard before Gem of Isolation? I feel if the enemy buys protections, that is when you should buy penetration. If they're that Chronos that thinks they don't need to buy protections against me because they're Chronos, that is when I buy Spear of Desolation. Beating a Chronos is the best feeling in Smite :)

I put Spear of Desolation as an idea for the person who wants to be burst and destructive. I realize now they would actually have around the same damage with one protection item bought on the enemy.

I am making the change now.

Hey,

Your build looks decent, and I have no doubts it wouldn’t work. Although for a damage build you’re picking penetration too late. If you’re only building 1 pen item, Spear of Desolation might not be the best choice. It has a high price and only flat pen. I think building Obsidian Shard as 3rd or 4th would serve you better.

Overall I really like your guide. You’ve explained everything well, you have all the necessary info and your coding looks great too ;)

I’m giving you +1 vote, but I hope you do some changes to your build :)
