Introduction

Welcome to my guide for Athena, Goddess of Wisdom

My name is Prism. I am a Veteran and a Guide Writer on SmiteFire, who loves playing smite, mainly in the jungle, solo and support roles !

This was my FIRST smitefire guide, at the moment I have 11, so I hope you enjoy it !

This guide uses BBCoding from BBCoding masters like Zilby, xZeroStrike, and FemFatalis, already wanting to thank them for their kindness and their friendship.

Nevertheless, lets move on to Shield Woman herself, Athena!

Pros/Cons

Athena - Pros & Cons

........ Pros ........

....... Cons .......

  • Dash needs to charge
  • Allies can block your ult
  • Ult damage is unreliable

Skills

ABILITIES

Athena's abilities are very powerful in the CC element, which includes a slow and a taunt. She has two high damaging abilities, which helps her with her viability and her ability to be played in multiple roles

REACH
Reach is a vary straightforward passive. It increases your basic attack magical power while making it a ranged attack, that goes through walls, after using an ability, making it a very useful execution/poking tool

This ability can not be leveled, and is active at all times.

PREEMPTIVE STRIKE

#1
Preemptive Strike is a dash,
which has a charge up time of 1,5 seconds, that goes through minions. but stops at enemy gods, dealing 80/130/180/230/280 (+50% of your magical power), and applies a 25% slow to enemy gods for 2.25s

This ability should be leveled third, after Shield Wall and before Defender of Olympus

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Disrupt Enemy Team Escape/Chase Potential.
- Getaway and Chase
- Clear Wave with Reach.

CONFOUND

#2
Confound is a CC ability, which forces enemies to walk in Athena's direction, while basic attacking.
The duration goes up by the level (1/1.25/1.5/1.175/2.0s) and also has a damage increase of 40/65/90/115/140(+20% of your Magical Power).

This ability should be leveled first

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Force enemies to use Purification Beads.
- Initiate teamfights.
- To force an enemy to attack you, and not your teammate.

SHIELD WALL

#3
Shield Wall is an important ability for Athena and her combos. This ability has 2 states, the first, when the ability is activated (70/110/150/190/230. (+50% of your Magical Power)), and, after 2 seconds, when the ability disappears, it applies a second roll of damage (70/135/200/265/330. (+50% of your Magical Power))

This ability should be leveled second, after Confound and before Preemptive Strike.

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Main Damage Tool to attack Minions/Creeps with.
- Apply damage to the enemy team.
- Use it to zone choke points

DEFENDER OF OLYMPUS

#4
Defender of Olympus certainly deserves its name. It allows you to select an ally, and you'll teleport to him, after 3,6 seconds, dealing area damage (350 / 430 / 510 / 590 / 670 (+90% of your Magical Power)), and it mitigates 30% of the damage taken by him. On top of that, it also makes you CC immune].

You should put 1 point in Defender of Olympus at level 5. From there, it should be leveled last.

Use this ability in the following circumstances:
- Deal insane burst damage.
- Become CC immune and avoid high amounts of CC.
- Force Enemies to Relocate.
- Become Globally present

Items

Starter item - Protections / Health / Mp5
Sentinel's Gift is our starter item. It gives +10 Magical and Physical protections, +75 Health, +7 Mp5 and a passive that gives us bonus gold and regeneration.
This is the starter you'll want to pick for most matches when playing Athena. The protections it provides allows you to tank more damage earlier on, which is always an amazing thing to do. It also gives you some health, which helps suppress early game aggression issues. The Mp5 and passive make you more capable during the laning phase as well as making it easier to build your itens.

Core #1 - Health / Hp5 / Passive
Gauntlet of Thebes is the first core item. It gives +300 Health, +15 Hp5 and an AoE Passive, that increases Physical and Magical Protection.
Athena plays best as a tank for her team, and since her playstyle is heavily focused on helping her teammates, she works best with items that increase stats for her allies. The health it provides allows you to stay in combat longer. You need this since Athena's can be relatively squishy, depending the enemy team combination. It also gives you some Hp5, which helps you in recovering some of the lost health, and this can help a lot. Lastly, this item's passive is a mix in between Sovereignty's and Heartward Amulet's, increasing efficiency

Core item #2 - Protection / Health / Passive
Sovereignty is the second core item. It gives +45 Physical Protections, +250 Health, and a passive that gives AoE Protections and Hp5.
This is the physical protection item you'll always want to pick when playing Athena. The protections it provides allows you to tank more damage, which is always an amazing thing to do. It also gives you some health, which helps with tanking as well. The passive makes you help all your allies during combat situations.

Core item #3 - Protection / Health / Passive
Heartward Amulet is the third core item. It gives +55 Magical Protections, +250 Health, and a passive that gives AoE Protections and Mp5.
This is the magical protection item you'll always want to pick when playing Athena. The protections it provides allows you to tank more damage, which is always an amazing thing to do. It also gives you some health, which helps with tanking as well. The passive makes you help all your allies during combat situations. When you approach Late Game, you should look into evolving this item into Amulet of the Stronghold, which will convert part of your physical protections into magical.

Possible Item #1 - Health / Protection / CDR / Speed
Witchblade is the first possible item. It gives +250 Health, +30 Physical Protection, 10% Cooldown Reduction, 7% Movement Speed and a passive that reduces enemy attack speed by 25%.
Athena plays best as a tank for her team, and since her playstyle is heavily focused on helping her teammates, she works best with items that make sure she stays alive, while providing buffs or debuffs for our teams. The health and cdr it provides allows you to stay in combat longer and spam more abilities. It also gives you some Physical Protection, which helps against ssassins and hunters.

Possible Item #2 - Protections / CDR / Passive
Mantle of Discord is the second go to item. It gives +60 Physical and Magical Protections, 10% CDR and a passive that stuns enemies in an AoE while making you CC Immune.
Athena benefits from the multiple stats this item gives her, the protections giving her more survivability, the CDR giving her more frequent abilities, coupled with the passive that allows her to mitigate damage Really helps her become a power house to be reckoned with in the transition from mid to late game.

Relics

Relic #1
Heavenly Wings is a relic. It gives 20% Movement Speed, immunity to slows and, when upgraded, immunity to movement penalties to auto attacks or rooting enemies in an AoE.
Athena's team benefits from this in multiple ways. It allows her to make her team more mobile, for either closing the gap to a escaping enemy god, or to help herself and her team escape an enemy engagement. It's quite useful early game, especially considering possible early ganks to duo lane, may it be an enemy or an allied gank.

Relic #2
Horrific Emblem is a relic. It does a 30% Slow, 25% Attack Speed reduction, -15% Damage Dealt and, when upgraded, either increasing the effects or trembling enemies.
Athena's team benefits from this in multiple ways. It allows her to make the enemy team less mobile, while also affecting their attack speed and damage done, which not only is a tool to help destroy, the now immobile enemy, as it decreases the efficacy of hunters and the damage done by mages. Overall, this is an amazing item that, when used correctly, can completely favor the team fight in your way.

Relic #3
Cursed Ankh is a relic. It takes away 40% Healing and 75% of enemies shields from the enemy team, and, when upgraded, eitherredirect the healing to your team or create a miasma that deals damage based on their maximum health.
Athena's team benefits from this in specific games, when they're playing againts healers. If healers are left unchecked, they'll just heal away all the damage your team deals, effectively winning engagements. Taking away half of that healing not only renders them useless, as it also helps your team burst through the enemy team, if you have this relic upgraded. This is a situational relic, and it works best while it's used together with Pestilence.

Relic #4
Magic Shell is a relic. It gives a shield based on your god level and, when upgraded, it either gives 15% damage mitigation or allows you to pass through players and player structures.
Athena'steam benefits from this in a simple way, receiving a shield to soak up some damage and up to two auto attacks, which could seem like little, but this could be the difference between winning and loosing a teamfight. However, it's not enough to make it a truly important and must-have relic.

Steps

Early game
Levels
Level 1 - Level 9
What to do?
- Farm as much as you can.
- Damage the wave! Don't take last hits!
- Punish enemies trying to move forward!
- Remember, you should start at the Green buff!
- Use your ultimate to gank!
- Make sure your adc is safe!
- Don't forget to use the Free Ward from your Vision Shard!

Mid Game
Levels
Level 10 - Level 15
What to do?
- Be more aggressive!
- Don't forget to farm!
- Stay more at mid but keep ganking!
- Keep your Preemptive Strike Block counter charged!

Late game
Levels
Level 16 - Level 20
What to do?
- Farm less, fight more!
- Use your dash to slow enemies!
- Be sure of your teams position, don't be alone in the enemy frontline!
- Stay safe!

Combos

Combo #1 "Comin' in Hot!"
>>>>> >>>>>
This combo is one that you'll will use the most. Close in to the enemy with Preemptive Strike, applying your slow, if possible, and then use Shield Wall for the first tick of damage, then proceed to use Confound to drag enemies back into your Shield Wall so that they receive the second tick of damage and are forced to retreat, either from the damage itself or from the burst your allies will apply.

Combo #2 "Meet My Other Friends!" (Aggressive)
>>>>> >>>>> >>>>>
This combo is the one that you'll normally use when you use your ult to rotate aggressively. Use your Defender of Olympus on your ally, and, when you land, immediatly use Shield Wall, follow up with Confound to bring them back to the Shield Wall and already charge Preemptive Strike to attack them and slow them, to give your ally either a vantage at attacking them, or to retreat.

Combo #3 "In Between Olympus and Earth" (Defensive)
>>>>> >>>>> >>>>>
This combo is the one that you'll normally use when you use your ult to rotate defensively. Use your Defender of Olympus on your ally, and, when you land, immediatly use Confound, and go in the opposite direction of your ally. Follow up with Shield Wall to apply some damage and already charge Preemptive Strike to escape, either to your ally to continue helping him or to escape yourself.

Summary

This was my guide for Athena, Goddess of Wisdom
Athena is, by far, one of the best guardians of this game. With Jungle potential, Athena is pretty versatile for a lot of stuff, from Split Pushing to changing the fate of a enemy/ally. If you are going againts a Athena, be on your feet. If you are Athena, prepare to save everyone's life while also changing some fates.

Pris,

Welcome back. About time. Some feedback:
  • Relic Dagger is often standard now in the spot right after Gauntlet of Thebes. I wouldn't always get it, or get it there, but since the price is still super cheap, it should be a very strong consideration. Maybe you offer 2 build examples to show some variation, and have it in the other build?

  • Personal pref, getting better mana sustain can be important. While I get Pridwen's popularity, and Sovereignty is always a solid item, I prefer Breastplate of Valor to bridge the gap between the two, and I'd get it either immediately after Gauntlet of Thebes or after Relic Dagger. I think both glyph upgrades are functional so I wouldn't identify one over the other. But BoV solves any early mana issues, and the earlier CDR is always appreciated. Also, Prid's passive isn't always going to be super helpful, especially if you're ulting over to a teammate to help extract them (rather than to get the jump on the enemy).

  • If you're identifying Heartward Amulet as core, I would just clarify it as Amulet of the Stronghold. Amulet of Silence is just meh right now IMO.

  • You should still have Spectral Armor in your situationals list to counter crits.

  • If you're doing well early, you can also consider an offensive item. Spear of the Magus should work well since you have easily-applied CC in her 1 and 2, and since her 2 also provides some damage now, it can be nice having the buffed flat pen Magus just got.

  • Suggest adding a couple more relics. Actually a lot of them can work really well right now, but I think Frenzy is a good one for aggression, and even Beads might be considered Temporal Beads specifically, in case you get cc'd and need to peel for a teammate.
That's what I've got for now. Thoughts?

Oh also... 1.45/10.

ThePerfectPrism (56) | February 24, 2022 2:14pm
Hey bran, thank you so much for you feedback!
  • I do believe Relic Dagger is a really strong item, especially for supports, but I've seen lots of AA ADCs and AA Jungles recently, which is why I prioritized Witchblade over it. If I see a shift in that, I will return Relic Dagger to it's spot.
  • I will add a more "greedy" build, with less aura items using other items. I also love Breastplate of Valor and still use it a lot over Sovereignty
  • I will do that!
  • Ah I might have misclicked and removed it accidentally, will fix it, thanks!
  • Hmmmmm I love the idea of getting a damage item on Athena, but for the purpose of a guide for starting/returning/doubtful players, I think I'll stray away from that
  • ... Which is also the same reason I won't recommend [[Temporal Beads]! I feel like that's just asking for people to flame them and maybe put on some bad habits on the player, but it is a possible relic.

My only thought is that I'm grateful you're always so thorough and helpful whenever I majorly update or ask for your insight. You're the best!

(1.45 is your nose, old man)

How do you counter Athena? i play as achilles lately and ive been getting ripped by this lady
2
ThePerfectPrism (56) | March 25, 2021 6:27pm
Hey Tripp! I would listen to Big damage's advice, but there are also some other options. As Achilles, she's going to use her taunt a lot at on you, but you can also use Purification Beads, you can juke her with your own dash backwards, you can stun her as she comes comes, and so many more!
2
Big Damage (37) | March 25, 2021 2:57pm
Her dash has a long wind up before she can close the distance and taunt which is her main strength. If you have a leap like Anhur, long dash like Agni or a CC immunity like Ravana you can pre-emptively hit your abilities to avoid the taunt.

VesTheStepdad | March 15, 2021 12:41pm
Isnt midgardian just bad witchblade?
1
ThePerfectPrism (56) | March 15, 2021 1:44pm
Personally, Midgardian feels nice on Athena. Especially when you're using your taunt against the ADC and they turn doing aa's for free. On other supports I wouldn't recommend the item, but I feel like it's quite justifiable on Athena. Witchblade is also an amazing item tho
2
Branmuffin17 (394) | March 15, 2021 2:01pm
Agreed, and as of right now (before 8.3), Witch and Midgardian DO stack.

*Edit* here I was thinking of Winged providing Magical prots, not Witch (Thanks DV-8)

When you can force a god to basic attack you, Midgardian retains function. And while they may not be your initial target, if you can get in their face and body-block, you still get good effect. Not to mention, it also provides an MS slow in addition to the AS slow.

Hi! how's blink on Athena support? X
1
ThePerfectPrism (56) | July 14, 2019 10:27am
Hi Foot! Blink isn't a bad relic on her, but I feel as thought other relics bring more to the table since Athena already has a lot of mobility in her kit.
1
Branmuffin17 (394) | July 14, 2019 12:50pm
Although she does, her dash has a somewhat long CD, and if you used it recently, there's no way you're going to catch a fleeing enemy. But you have a taunt that, if you can use it on them, allows your teammates time to catch up and secure a kill...so in this, Blink provides an additional way to help control...if you don't find a major need for other relics.
1
Kriega1 (143) | July 13, 2019 11:34am
Not bad, but not the most necessary relic on her. Early game the taunt won't be levelled much so it's definitely bad as a first relic on her.
1
Branmuffin17 (394) | July 13, 2019 11:54am
Agreed. 2nd relic can be great when you're chasing...catch up to the enemy, taunt them to bring them back to your team to secure a kill.

Stone of Binding should probably be your first item after boots because it's a bridge item that can be sold late. I'd also get Void Stone fairly early, either 2nd instead of stone or 3rd after sov. Other than that, looks good.

I would probably put a point into Preemptive Strike at level 3, rather than a 2nd level in Shield Wall. The mobility that provides is important, and adds additional CC to her kit.

A few mistakes, its seems you mixed up CDR and CCR in a few of the Item descriptions and in the guide explaining them

Hi Rumrunna, I Double-Checked the items (Cuz I do mistake myself / forget to update certain informations after patch) but I didn't find the mistakes you referenced. Could you say the otems you meant?

I did a once over and couldn't find any mistakes either. Then again, I didn't look very hard.

Prism! Where is your Celestial Legion Helm option?

I've seen EmilZy build that on supports before. Is it really that useful for non-mid/solo?

EmilZy builds it when he wants to “carry” his games as a support, but I believe it only works for very aggressive supports (like Athena and Bacchus), especially when paired with Void Stone. You can also build Thebes after core to make up for the lack of Sov aura.

However, both items got nerfed in the last patch. Don’t know how that’s gonna affect this strategy.

What do you mean? It's right there *wink wink*

(Lol, all jokes aside, it wasn't on the guide but I've been experimenting with going Celestial Legion Helm + Genji's Guard in the place of Spirit Robe and Mantle of Discord, then selling boots for Mantle of Discord if the game does reach that point. So far I've been getting good results from that, but I haven't made up my mind on it yet. Maybe 2-3 more games and they'll transition to the main build)

Pris, good to see the guide updated...just in time for you to maybe adjust further for S6 in a week or two XD

Some current comments:
  • Note that you can now put comments in with the item listings at the top, for easy / quick reference. You don't have to, but it can be helpful.

  • I'd suggest keeping the relic out of the starting items lists. That relic choice is going to depend on preference to a degree, and you should just have Heavenly Wings listed with the other relics below.

  • At least situationally, you should include Genji's Guard (maybe), Heartward Amulet, and Witchblade. Witch's and Midgard's slow can stack, which can be particularly powerful. Heartward can still be functional against a team with 3 magical gods.

  • I know and understand the purpose for maxing Confound first, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that exact skill order. With Athena's high damage on Shield Wall, she can venture into the jungle and get some extra farm that way efficiently, if you level it a bit more. In addition, 0.25 seconds per rank is functional but not huge, and the damage potential on Shield can also be good for ganks and whatnot. If nothing else, I'd perhaps level Shield to 3 or 4 before switching over to Confound. Just a thought.

  • In your writeup for Preemptive Strike, you say to use the ability to disrupt enemy escape/chase, and for your own escape/chase potential. However, it also has good early wave-clear potential, especially in combination with Reach.

  • For Shield Wall, you say it's to clear the lane...but again, also for jungle camps. Just a wording choice, perhaps, but you can generalize and just say minions and it'll cover them all.

  • For Sovereignty, note also that the physical protection helps against minion and objective damage (e.g. towers).

  • You need to update the stats you state for Oni Hunter's Garb, as they've changed significantly.

Braaaaaaaaaaaan
  • How does one do that?
  • I'll fix that
  • I was torn between putting Genji's, but I feel like, if someone is coming to my guide to learn more about Athena, maybe they're a newer players, that could maybe go out of their way to get an attack by a magical god just so they get that 3s from the passive, and that's why I didn't put it. I thought Amule was already in the situational, I'll adapt. What you say about Witch + Midgard is interesting, but I feel like using both at the same time would be to cover a more AA-Based team (Let's say Ao Kuang jg + Xbalanque adc + Neith mid), so it's a bit too much "specific", but I'll test it out if I have a chance and see it's effect.
  • I feel like the leveling on those two abilities depend a lot about the jungle meta in the game. Considering the current one, which I've been ganked several times prior to level 6, Getting extra points in Confound seems a bit more logical to me at the moment. If you use that site that cheecks the pior version of websites, if you check out this guide, you'll see that I used to say to level up Shield Wall first, as duo lane was more "Babysit the ADC and make sure he gets ahead". But I do agree that, generally, getting 2-3 points in Shield Wall to then go to Confound is more interesting.
  • It is really good to lane clear, but it's also quite risky, and I don't want newer players to think that they have to dive to lane clear, so that's why I omitted that scenario.
  • I'll change the wording
  • Interesting
  • But I literally did the item thing based on the current description! Are you referring to the S6 patch?

Look carefully at the item listing in the builder. You'll see the notes section.

You can leave Genji out if you really want. For magical prots, Oni, Pest, and balanced prots like your Spirit/Mantle/Thebes are plenty in general.

For Midgard + Witch, it was an example of good synergy/function against a specific comp, as you say. But I don't mean to use that as an example...just that Witch should be an optional item listing.

On using the dash and Reach to help clear wave, after they use their abilities on the wave, you can run right in, dash back toward YOUR side, and then reach through the whole wave. It's a functional strat if you feel you need the dash at level 1.

Your writeup of Oni, when I read it, said 200 or 250 health and some other things that were off, I think. It looks okay now at first glance.

For Oni hunters you should mention how the damage mitigation can't be countered by titans/exe/demonic/obs shard or qins/reaver.

Do u have a guide/description/blog that I can link to on attack speed (in attack chains) /power scaling (in attack chains)/basic attack progression? (both physical and magical) Or is it included in one of your guides? Because if there isn't it would probably be a good idea to make one.

After all, we are doing Hi Rez's job one step at a time.

LOL

It's not directly addressed in my guides as a whole, though I talk about it situationally in different god guides and as examples in like the Qin's section of the Items guide.

I can probably address that. What specifically were you thinking? Just describe attack progressions, basic attack scaling for phys (100%) / mag (20%), etc.?
