Introduction

First off, thanks for checking out this guide. This is my first ever guide. I would very much appreciate suggestions to the formatting, as that's something I still need to work on.

Every game is different in some way, so remember there are certain situations where you will need to stray from this guide. I have over 600 games played and a majority of them are with Sobek.

Pros / Cons

Pros:

  • VERY good initiator
  • His Sickening Strike reduces enemy healing by 50% (Not a lot of players realize that)
  • Great at chasing/escaping
  • Great at disrupting and being a pain in the ***
  • Good at tanking Gold Fury and Fire Giant earlier on because of his passive (armor of the nile)
Cons:
  • Miss your Charge Prey and you could be in some trouble
  • Not the best farmer/pusher

Skills

armor of the nile
Armor of the Nile
Passive

Sobek's basic attacks that hit an enemy grant him +10 physical and magical protection for 4 seconds (max 3 stacks)

Be sure to take advantage of this passive, especially early on. What I love doing right before I use Charge Prey is attack the melee minions 3 times. That way, whether you throw the enemy back or miss, you'll receive less damage from the minions and enemies.

Charge Prey
Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 mana
Cooldown: 15s

Sobek charges forward at a frenzied pace. If Sobek hits an enemy god in his path, he stuns him doing 70/110/150/190/230 (+50% of your magical power) magical damage and throwing the god behind Sobek.

This ability is what makes Sobek so useful. It has a pretty good range so use the enemy's fear of being thrown back to your advantage (which will be talked about more in the next section). Not only is it good at initiating, it's also great for chasing the enemy that is trying to escape as well as an ok escape.
Just be careful when using this ability though. If you miss, you could be in a very bad position. If you and your laning parter is chasing an enemy, be aware that your partner could have a leap/dash of their own. What I see time and time again is that a Sobek's partner uses a dash/jump at the same time that sobek uses this ability.
One last thing to be careful about is, when escaping, try to stay clear of enemies in your path. If you are running away towards your base, you might accidentally charge into an enemy, slowing you down a lot and shortening the distance that you charge.
You can also use this ability to throw Arachne right off of your ally when she is using Drain Life.

Tail Whip
Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 mana
Cooldown: 12s

(Update 10/4/12) After a .4s buildup Sobek whips around in a circle, knocking enemies back and doing 80/125/170/215/260 (+50% of your magical power) magical damage.

This is a great disruption ability. You can use it not only to knock back an enemy in a certain direction, but it also cancels a lot of abilities! It cancels the types of abilities that take a brief moment to cast as well as Anubis's Plague of Locusts channeling ability. It also knocks Arachne off of your ally when she is using Drain Life.
Use this ability RIGHT after you use charge-prey to briefly keep the enemy from using their jump/dash. But be careful though. It could cause your partner to miss their skill shot.

Sickening Strike
Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 mana
Cooldown: 13s

Sobek does an axe attack that damages all enemies in front of him for 60/100/140/180/220 (+30% of your magical power) magical damage and lowers their healing received by 50% for 4 seconds. In addition, Sobek heals 20/30/40/50/60 (+10% of your magical power) for each enemy hit.

What a lot of people don't realize about this ability is that it lowers the healing received by 50% to all hit enemies. In some ways, it's better than the items that reduce healing received; Brawler's Beat Stick and Divine Ruin (Both items are 25% with stacks up to 75% and only lasts 3 seconds). Try to hit as many enemies as you can with this ability, especially if the team has a lot of healers. This is the ability you'll want to max first because it gives you a good amount of sustain in lane. If you position yourself right, you can hit all the minions in lane for the maximum amount of healing.

Lurking in the Waters
Cost: 80/90/100/110/120 mana
Cooldown: 90s

Sobek submerges himself into a pool of water for 4 seconds. While Sobek remains underwater, he regens mana and is immune to crowd control. Enemies within the pool are slowed. When Sobek emerges, he damages all enemies in the radius for 350/500/650/800/950 (+80% of your magical power) magical damage. Cancelling the ability early results in decreased damage.

This ability has a pretty large radius for the amount of damage that it does so try to hit as many enemies as possible. What's great about it is that it gives you mana as well. It makes your lane sustain pretty amazing. Especially since Sickening Strike gives you health. If you are ever wanting to dive an enemy that has half health or lower at a tower, just wait till the minions get in tower range and use this ability. The slowing affect doesn't aggro the tower to you. If the enemy hasn't jumped or dashed away, you should be able to finish the kill and then Charge Prey out of tower range taking only 1 or 2 hits. Don't forget you can use this right before you get CC'd so you aren't affected by it.

Items

For the basic tanky sobek build, it's basically based on the enemy team having a good balance of AD/MP team with an equal amount of gold per player. Of course that's not normally the case, so feel free to switch up some items in the basic build. I've included my Magical Power build at the bottom of this section.

To start off, you'll want to get a couple Mana Potion and tier 2 reinforced boots.
(In higher level play, you may start out with hands of the gods and tier 1 reinforced boots)
This will give you a decent amount of protection. The reason you will want Mana Potion instead of health potion is because Sickening Strike can heal you.

Core Build

reinforced boots
Reinforced Boots

This item gives an all around decent amount of tankiness and crowd control reduction by 30%. You'll definitely want to start off with this for the basic stats.

Gauntlet of Thebes

This item gives you health based on the amount of minions/players you kill. They do not go away after dying. If you think you can keep your farm up, then go ahead and get this item as early as you can. If you're already having some trouble farming and want the extra health, then consider getting Silverfox Girdle instead. The HP5 will also help you sustain if you are by yourself protecting a tower.

Void Stone

I like picking this item up 3rd because it adds nice damage to Sobek's abilities as well as protect him from magical abilities. It will also allow your allies to do more magical damage due to the passive of this item (Reduces Magical Protection by 30 within 55 feet).

Wall of Absolution

I usually pick this item up 4th, unless I need the physical protection early on. It gives you a good amount of physical protection as well as a magical protection debuff on enemies that hit you with basic attacks. Combine this with void-stone and your magical carries (as well as your own abilities) will do a great amount of damage, even to the tanks.

Situational Items

Breastplate of Valor

This item gives you a very good amount of physical protection. Not only that, but it reduces your cooldowns by 20%! I love having cooldown reduction on Sobek for his charge-prey.

Hide of Leviathan

This item gives you good all around stats that would be nice on a tank. However, the downside to it is that it doesn't have a passive effect.

Sovereignty

If the enemy team has a lot of AD or if the AD is really fed, then definitely consider getting this item for your team. It gives you a good amount of extra health and buffs your team's physical protection by 30.

Stone of Gaia

Because of this item's passive, it will give you a good amount of health regen. Pick this item up if you are having trouble tanking against the enemy's magical powered gods.

Magi's blessing
Magi's Blessing

Again, if you are having trouble tanking magical damage, then pick this item up. It works well with Stone of Gaia because of the health that it gives. The passive is pretty good too. It allows you to absorb an ability every minute. Just try not to let it get wasted on a lesser ability by the enemy.

Magical Power Build

I don't normally build magical power. I feel that since all the previous nurfs, Sobek is a lot more useful as a tank. However, I've included it for those that feel like doing damage as Sobek apposed to tanking.

warlock's sash
Warlock's Sash

I like building this item second for multiple reasons. For one, I can't let myself play Sobek without building some tankiness. This gives you both good magical power and health. Get it early so you can get started on the passive.

Void Stone

This items gives you a good amount of Magical Power, Magical Penetration and some Magical Defense as well. Again, I just can't build pure Magical Power Sobek.

Gem of Isolation

This item gives you a great deal of Magical Power, a good amount of health and mana, and all your abilities will add slowing effects!

Polynomicon

Since you are a melee mage, this item is pretty good on Magical Power Sobek. It not only allows your abilites to lifesteal, but every time you use one of your abilities, you can auto attack one of your enemies and it does as much damage as you have Magical Power. It also gives you a good amount of mana and Magical Power.

Rod of Tahuti

If everything is going well, then you should build this for a last item. Gives you an amazing amount of Magical Power.

Of course, you may feel like building different items than I choose for this Magical Power Sobek build. I don't ever play this way anymore, but I feel like this is a decent amount of tankiness for the amount of Magical Power you will be doing. I prefer to build a lot tankier though.

Abilities

Great Abilities to buy

There are several good abilities that you might want to get. It all depends on the enemy team.

Heavenly Agility

As you can see from the build, I highly suggest you get this item (unless someone on your team beat you to it). It allows sobek and the team to catch up to enemies that are trying to escape. Combine this with charge-prey and no one is going to escape!
Depending on your style, you might want sprint over this item. I just like Heavenly Agility more because it helps out the team.

Purification Beads

Buying this item just depends on the amount of CC the enemy has. If you constantly are getting stunned then definitely consider getting this item.

Creeping Curse

When it comes to this item, or Heavenly Agility you usually don't want to buy it if someone on your team already has. This item will help make sure enemies that are trying to escape, end up dying.

Hand of the Gods

I suggest getting this item in higher level play if you know what you are doing. It's still a good item, despite the nurfs to it.

Early / Mid / Late Game

Early Game

Your early game should be about Charge Prey and getting your carry fed. If the enemies laning against you are very passive and cautious (as they should be), then use that to your advantage. Freeze the lane near the middle by not auto attacking and let your carry last hit. Meanwhile, position yourself on the other side of the enemy archers to zone the enemies out of XP range. This should give your lane a huge advantage on XP and gold.

Mid Game

As Sobek you should focus on helping your team get fed. Sure, a fed Sobek is nice, but a fed Cupid/ Sun Wukong/ Ra is a lot better. As soon as you destroy your lane's first tower, start ganking the other lanes. You should also be buying a couple Ward every time you go back. Don't underestimate the power of warding. Focus on Gold Fury and Fire Giant of course. Around 15 minutes into the game, try to organize your team into getting Gold Fury. You should be able to tank it long enough for your team to get it. Just make sure to ward so you know if the enemies are coming.

Late Game

Late game Sobek is all about charging and disrupting. Focus on using Charge Prey on the carries. If they are too cautious, it sometimes wouldn't hurt to charge a tank if you think your team can burst him down quick enough. You should be sticking with the majority of your team most of late game, except when you are warding. Let the carries split push.

Team Fights

In team fights, Sobek should first try to initiate by using Charge Prey a carry for your team to eat up. Use Tail Whip and Sickening Strike on as many enemies as you can before using Lurking In The Waters. While you are using it, the squishies should be trying to avoid it, as it does a pretty good chunk of their health. When they try to avoid it, keep following them. While the rest of your team bursts down whoever you threw back, you'll keep the carries out of the fight. If they decide to just stay in the fight anyways, well, the squishies will regret that as soon as it pops. If they decide to try and burst you down while you are in Lurking In The Waters, don't be afraid to pop it early for reduced damage before dying. Don't be too bummed out about dying in team fights though. If you die instead of the carries, then you are doing your job.

Laning Partners

One of THE best laning partners in this game at the moment is Cupid/ Sobek. The lane sustain is by far the best. With both having heals and a way to get mana from their abilities. Let Cupid get 10 stacks of his passive ( Lovestruck), then Charge Prey and have cupid stun that god. The early game from both of these guys are far too strong. When it comes time for your ultimates, have Cupid use his around the same time you use Lurking In The Waters so it does a massive amount of damage when it comes time for those abilities to pop. Another amazing partner is Anubis. Charge, stun, burst down, gg.

Other good partners are Anhur, Sun Wukong, Artemis, Bakasura, and basically any carry.

How to Counter

During laning phase, it's incredibly hard to counter Sobek. One of the few things you can do is play passive or try to predict when a Sobek is about to Charge Prey, dodge it, and make him taste the pain. Also, try to have your team place gods with jumps and escapes against Sobek.

After laning phase is over, if the enemy Sobek is a big enough problem, get Aegis Amulet. Remember to wait 2-3 seconds after Sobek uses Lurking In The Waters. Consider getting Magi's Blessing as well to cancel out Charge Prey.

Also, since the Purification Beads buff last Thursday (20th Sept 2012), you are able to use it before or right as soon as Sobek hits you with Charge Prey to cancel it out.

Match History

I'm including the last games I've played as Sobek in my ranked games.

Closing Statement

Thanks for reading this guide! I'll be sure to edit it whenever I need to. Let me know how you feel about this guide please! It's my first one and I tried to make it look as good as I could. If you feel like the formatting or colors are too much, let me know before downvoting and I'll be sure to change it! Please focus more on the content than the formatting before voting.

Thanks again!

You gave the player a choice of being damage or tanky and being able to defend againt AD or AP.
Giving the player info of the dos and donts of what to do and who to lane with.
No spelling errors I could find.

This build seemed to work okay for me, although I still feel like Sobek is one of the squishiest tanks... I find it difficult to get the 3 stacks of melee up before initiating and when I'm in his attacks seem sooo slow... I too usually build my pure tanks the way Yeabby does, although Sobek still presents issues with me, with either build.

Great guide, though im building in another way. I like getting Brestplate Valor right after boots to get the mana(as sobek is very mana hungry early game) and CD reduction. I usually go Stone Of Gaia after that, but maybe I should try that Gauntles of Thebs early on, it really is a great item.

Sobek is my prefered tank, I really love playing with him!

This is a very good guide, and even though I deviated a bit from your full build, it was very helpful to start with. Thanks!

Thanks for commenting! Yeah, soon I might even upload a picture of good places to ward even. Warding is such an important factor in the game.
