Introduction

Thanatos is a challenge to play. Though he can dish out INSANE amounts of damage, he is also one of the squishiest gods in SMITE. Adding onto that last statement, ALL of his abilities cost a percentage of his own HEALTH! That's right, it's not just a flat amount of health you're losing, it's a PERCENTAGE. In conclusion to this intro, if you are fighting with below 20% health, I would like to wish you the best of luck.

Pros and Cons

PROS

- Thanatos is insane in the early game
- His (1), Death Scythe, can easily destroy the health bar of many gods
- Thanatos can use his (2), Scent of Death, as an escape or a chase. It also gives him a large amount of penetration. This ability is an extremely useful buff

CONS

- Thanatos can be nearly useless in late game team fights.
- His ulti, Hovering Death, can be easily called out, leading to a welcoming group upon his arrival, finally leading to his death.
- Soul Reap takes a while to silence apposing gods, meaning, Thanatos may have a rough time taking down gods such as Thor and Fenrir

Skills

Harvester Of Souls (Passive)

Enemy gods within the execute threshold are shown to Thanatos. Dealing the killing blow to enemies gives Thanatos based upon the max HP of the enemy. Thanatos's abilities also cost both Health and Mana. When Thanatos kills an enemy god, his cooldowns decrease.

Cooldown Decrease : 5 seconds
HP Restore(Gods) : 20% of god's HP.
HP Restore(Minions) : 10% of minion's HP

Death Scythe (1)

Thanatos throws his scythe at the enemy, dealing damage and an additional 10% damage based on the target's current HP. Takes 5% of Thanatos' max HP.

Damage : 100/170/240/310/380
Bonus Damage(Gods) : 10% of current HP
Healing : 75% of damage dealt
Slow : 20%

Death Scythe Usage
This is going to be your main source of damage early game. At around levels 9-11 it's a massive nuke. Doing about 400-500 damage total. The 10% additional damage is tremendous especially considering it's based on Current HP. You can basically hit a mage down to half health with this ability.

Scent Of Death (2)

Thanatos senses death, it grants him immunity to slow effects, movement speed, and penetration for 6 seconds. His movement speed doubles when he is moving towards a god within the insta-kill threshold of his ultimate. Takes 5% of Thanatos' max HP when used.

Penetration : 15/20/25/30/35
Movement Speed :10/15/20/25/30%
Bonus Speed (Low Health) : 10/15/20/25/30%

Scent of Death Usage
This buff that Thanatos has is huge. Your movement speed increases by 30%, that doubles if someone is within the insta-kill threshold of your ult. You gain +30 Penetration, which is the same as 2 Warrior Tabi's. It can be used to chase, or get away from the fight.

Soul Reap (3)

Thanatos swings his scythe, dealing damage and silencing his enemeies. He moves at a reduced rate while he swings. Consumes 5% of Thanatos' max HP when used.

Damage : 100/150/200/250/300
Silence Duration : .5/.75/1/1.25/1.5

Soul Reap Usage
This is used to combo with your 1. Both of these abilities can do tons of damage. The silence is handy too. When you find that Fenrir is currently mauling your face you can also press 3 and stop the pain, same with Thor. Note, that this ability does go through walls. This ability can be used as an easier way to clear camps, but getting scythe first allows for early kills on enemy gods.

Hovering Death (4)

Thanatos takes flight and stays afloat for 5 seconds, unable to be hit, he can still be damage by DoTs while using his ultimate, which means Tornadoes and Vanish can still kill you. While airborn, he moves unimpeded at nearly twice the speed and can dive on the target location. Enemies within the insta-kill threshold are instantly killed, anyone else who isn't is stunned and gets damage dealt to them. Consumes 10% of Thanatos' max HP.

Damage : 90/125/160/195/230
Kill HP Threshold : 24/28/32/36/40%
Stun Duration : 1 second
Movement Speed : 150%

Hovering Death Usage
Thanatos' ultimate can be dodged. You should, for the most part, use this ult to pick off those guys who just have a slight amount life left in them, but also use it for escaping. That being said, you can help your other lanes by ulting in and slamming the opponents with his (1) Death Scythe

Item Explanations

Death's Toll

This item is the way we need to start on building this Jungle Thanatos. All that needs to be said is that this item adds to our already infinite jungle sustain.

Ninja Tabi

Many people will criticize my choice of Ninja Tabi over Warrior Tabi. My reasoning for choosing this version of the boots is due to the simple fact that once we have bought Jotunn's Wrath our penetration will jump to heights unthinkable. That being said, getting Warrior Tabi leads to having a very useless late game item. The Ninja Tabi also, obviously, allow for Thanatos to use his abilities at a faster pace and provide him with a helpful speed boost.

Jotunn's Wrath

This item is very self explanatory on Thanatos. Jotunn's Wrath gives Thanatos more penetration, cool-down reduction, and even more physical power.

Qin's Sais

These sais let Thanatos take even larger chunks of health from his enemies. Qin's Sais are a fine item to have in the late or early points of the game. Finally, this item allows you to have a slightly smaller Death Scythe as your basic attack, which is insane.

Rage

Rage is a very helpful item because it helps Thanatos stay in the late game with the added crits. Before we get our final item, we need to be critting as often as possible to stay in the loop.

Deathbringer

FINALLY WE GET TO THE FINAL ITEM OF THE MAIN BUILD!!! Deathbringer is a very simplistic item for the simple fact that we use it to increase our crits already being dished out because of Rage.

Magi's Blessing

The reason we sell Death's Toll and build Magi's Blessing is because Thanatos is VERY weak to Crowd Control. This blessing helps us to actually be useful in late game fights.

Optional Items

Hide of the Urchin

This item can help Thanatos take hits that he could not before. Hide of the Urchin is especially good on Thanatos because of the passive which can easily be stacked up to 10 when playing a destructive god such as Thanatos

Shifter's Shield

Oh my, where to start. Shifter's Shield can increase our Solo-Kill rate to it's maximum capacity. Not only does it add some power, but it also keeps us a good bit more safe during solo fights. This item can give Thanatos a tanky-feel and increase it even higher when dropping below 50%.

Titan's Bane

This item makes your penetration even higher leading to even more kills than before. If there are a couple of tanks or characters building defensive items, Titan's Bane is the way to go. Titan's Bane is a great item and can easily be used along with Bloodforge in the main build instead of building Rage

Bloodforge

This weapon is a fine replacement for Deathbringer in some cases. Going against a very squishy team means the enemy gods are also strong, so to counter this, we get some lifesteal. Bloodforge is a great item and can easily be used in the main build if it's your preference.

As said by DMBrandon "you can't play Thanatos like Hun Batz or Serqet, you have to maximize the early game to make it through the rest of the game" I really feel that your start is not adequate enough to maximize the early game. If you want to see, IMO, the best way to do it: https://www.smitefire.com/smite/guide/thanatos-and-season-2-a-death-story-7708

You say for his ult that he gets double movement speed but in the skill explanation you put 150%. it is actually 150%. Also item explanation, ability combos, and situational items

Reasonably good guide, build makes sense given Thanatos's strong points and his built in penetration with Scent of Death. Only note would be that you may want to note when to buy Magi's Blessing in order to have more survivability as you begin engaging in teamfights, as well as just add a section explaining your item choices (ie: your choices make sense to me as someone who has played Thanatos, but may not to a less experienced player). Overall decent guide tho, good job.

Thank you very much for the review! As you can probably tell, this is my first guide. I will be sure to add a section about why I chose the items I did for this set. Thanks again!
