Recently in Smite, the meta has been full of tanky characters. The best have typically been those that also pack a punch, such as Bellona and Xian Tian. A new strategy has recently been added to the game and is creeping its way into competitive play. The strategy I am referring to is known as the Dirty Bubble. The premise of the strategy is using a mid lane mage with few getaways (He Bo, Ah Puch) and turning them into a tank. On paper, this strategy seems to have too many flaws to be viable. To implement the strategy, a mid must transform his/her build into max protections and CDR. However, this is absolutely counter productive to the Gods' strengths. The most likely culprits are Ah Puch and He Bo, but these mages rely on bursting down opponents quickly with a combo of abilities. The build takes away all burst capabilities by eliminating power, as most DB builds include Vampiric Shroud, Shoes of Focus, Breastplate of Valor, etc. The strategy works well in the right hands, however, as the afore mentioned gods are turned into front line presences with nice damage output. Therefore, I have a build devoted to stopping this tactic.
This build starts off much like any other Thor build. At the start, Bumbas, a red pot and a combination of mana and health pots are to be bought. After this, the typical Warrior Tabi into Jotunn's wrath. Next is transcendence. Transcendence is an extremely good item on Thor anyway, as it provides Mana for more time between backs and also utilizes Thor's impressive lane clear to build stacks. For the dirty bubble strat, this item could pay huge dividends for the smart player.
The next item is extremely dependent on how well the other mid is doing. If the opponent is somewhere between fed to huge, the next item needs to be Mail of Renewal. The physical protections are nice for the physical presences on the other team, but the true benefit lies in the health and CDR. The health will allow you to stay in fights a bit longer, as the mid is most likely hitting hard if they are fed, even running Dirty Bubble. The CDR is always great on Thor as his kit is incredible.
However, if the strategy was able to be contained in the early game and you are either keeping up or fed, feel free to go straight into Brawler's Beatstick. The additional penetration is needed against a mid running so many chest plates, and this can help slow down the strat even further.
After the fourth true item, build whatever wasn't built fourth (MoR or Brawler's)
The last item is also up to how big the mid is, or how big various roles are. If Thor is ahead, go straight into Titan's Bane. Thor can secure many kills in the late game, and this item will help punch through any protections built. If there is an extremely potent magical threat on the other team, such as a sol, Freya, zhong or Xian, Bulwark of Hope is the way to go. The health is great for the oft-occurring team fights and the protections and passive allow you to ult in and eat some damage before being forced to retreat. Finally, if you are behind or if the other team just hits really hard, Hide o the Urchin should be the sixth item. The overall protections and health/mana will allow for more time in combat and can offer a nice stacking opportunity late game.
Same as all Thor builds ever. Upgrade the 3 for clear followed by the 1 for more clear followed by the 2 for stun. Upgrade the ult at 5 and then leave it alone until 16. Upgrade the 3 all the way, then the 1, then the 2, followed by the ult.
This build can be used in any situation, but is best when facing the annoying dirty bubble strat. The build is high on penetration but has variations, as this build can result in an almost completely damage-dealing Thor or a more bulky Thor late game.
