Introduction

Name: Poseidon
Title: God of the Oceans
Pantheon: Greek
Deep beneath the turbulent tides of the ocean lingers a God of idle rage. What must it be like to live forever in the shadow of your brother? To be denied again and again that which you desire, despite the power of the wrathful seas at your command? So Poseidon broods on his throne at the ocean floor.

As a child, Poseidon and his brother, Hades, were consumed by their father, Chronos. Powerless to escape, it was left to mighty Zeus to free them and slay their patron. Together, they defeated the last of the Titans and ushered in a new age of dominance for Olympian Gods, but their freedom, their very lives, Zeus would never let either brother forget were owed to him. Even as the heavens, the underworld, and the seas were divided among them, Zeus positioned himself as king of all, and what was Poseidon to do but be thankful he had been spared a fate in his father's belly? So he retired to his new realm and began the pursuit of gathering worshippers.

Soon rose a great ocean front city of mankind, and Poseidon presented himself as their God, but another had already come, Athena, Zeus' daughter. A competition was held ¬ each God would offer a gift and the people would select their sponsor. Confident, Poseidon drove his Trident, a trophy from the battle against the Titans, into the ground and a limitless spring emerged, but the people found the water salty and undrinkable. Athena extended her hand and a graceful olive tree rose from the earth. Wood, food, and oil, all from one gift. The people decided and the city was called Athens.

It may be that Poseidon never desired greatness as Zeus did. Had his father never consumed him, had he never been made God of the Sea, had his brother never crowned himself King of the Gods, Poseidon might have lived contentedly, but that chance is gone. Now, with the very tides at his command, an army of sea beasts at his back, and the formidable Kraken at his call, the glowering God of the deep seeks to quench his thirsty rage and plunge all the world in endless, wrathful seas.

Pros / Cons

Poseidon can basically be thought of as an intiator and high damage mage. Like any other mage in Smite, he has his strength's and weaknesses.

Pros
+Incredible ability to push lanes with his Tidal Surge ability. When maxed you can clear the whole wave of minons in on shot.

+Able to literally change the tide of the fight with his stun's and slows. (ex. Whirlpool & Release The Kraken!)

+Very high mobility makes him a hard target to catch or run away from when using Trident coupled with boots or speed buff, and other mobility items. (ex. winged wand)

Cons
-As any other high damage mage, you are very squishy. Use your mobility wisely!

-No jump mechanism to escape a trapped situation. (ex. Ring of Spears)

Creeping / Jungling

When it comes to jungling, there's a few buff's you'll be looking for constantly if you want the clear advantage.

Speed - +20% Movement Speed

Cooldown - 20% Cooldown Reduction

Having the additional 20% movement speed along with Poseidon's already amazing speed helps him have complete map coverage through the game, and the 20% cooldown reduction should be a must for any initiator.

Early Game Mid & Side Lane DPS

Be overly cautious when in mid lane to take as little damage as possible during early game, and be aware of MIA's on the side lanes. Until you get Tidal Surge to level 4 or 5, you could be out laned by opponents like Ra and Ao Kuang.

After about level 8 or 9 your lane should be pushed to their tower with ease. It's now time to help gank side or mid depending which lane you are in at the moment.

Initiating
Whirlpool + Release The Kraken!
Follow up by moving ahead of the enemy with Trident then push them into your team with Tidal Surge. Follow up with basic attacks as necessary to complete the job.

Early Game Side Lane Support

Let the opponents push your lane (but not so far as you take tower damage), save those abilities for when they make mistakes. If you are in the role of support you should be in lane with a DPS/Carry.

When your opponent steps out of position:
Whirlpool + Release The Kraken!
Follow up by moving ahead of the enemy with Trident then push them into your lane partner with Tidal Surge. After this, quickly remove yourself from the fight but stay close in case things go badly to give your lane partner a chance to escape. I think some people might argue to stick around and basic atack to help finish off the opponents, but you're not there to get kills. Support your lane partner as much as possible but don't risk your death. If you're dead, you're not supporting.

Mid and Late Game

As you have been doing, keep doing throughout the game. Watch your back for MIA's and ganks, keep your lane pushed up and support your team.

Late game Poseidon can be quite scary, and down right annoying with his high mobility. You can pretty much Hit an Run with him and they can't do anything about it. Don't forget the most important Con of Poseidon, which is he has no jump mechanism. Be especially wary of opponents who can trap you!!!

A good guide.
But I have to admit, I was slightly disappointed when I looked into it. I was expecting a complete coverage of all game modes - infact I was looking specifically for Arena pointers - it does call itself a "Complete" guide after all.
Maybe not use the word "Complete" or at the very least add the game mode being covered in the title!
But thanks for your contribution to the community.

Great guide, used it in my first conquest with Poseidon, had a flawless game. I was 9/0/6 and pushed all the way through mid. The enemy team surrendered as soon as we got FG right after that. To you, sir, I tip my hat.

lol I almost always start off with a starter item then potions to begin with. You can also afford to buy an active this way from the start.

Maybe he's trying to tell you to buy Vanguard to tank archer minions in the beginning since currently Vanguard is the best out of the three items. (Deaths Toll, Vamparic Cloak)

This doesn't matter much, but you have a typo in the first pro. The second to the last word you left the "E" out of "one"

ElGrizz, really useful guide, going to try Poseidon out tonight on this build!

There are a few things I'd like to see, which is more about fleshing out the guide and I think has been mentioned already. It's one of the best laid out guides I've seen for Smite gods so it's really useful!

Skills, you state what the skills actually do as per the description in the game. It would be really useful if you could write a summary about what you use the actual spells for, when to use them and how to utilise them to best effect. Do you use tidal wave for only pushing or only when you can get behind the enemy in laning? Do you release the kraken when it's a 1v1 or do you wait for 2 or more to really use it? DO you save release the kraken when you have a team-mate near by or when you level tidal wave to a particular point for enough damage or do you play aggressive when you've built the core?

Adding a similar thing on the items section would be useful, just one line on each about how important the item is to the build and why. Is it the base stats which are great or is it the passive on the item? When do you go get the items too, do you need to get the Warlock sash as soon as you have the gold for it or can you wait until you get warlock sash + part of the boots? Do you level all up to lvl 3 before moving to the next item or purchase specific things, having the descriptions above will make this really clear.

Just to mention, this cupid guide has bullet points beneath the skills, so something like that would be great: https://www.smitefire.com/smite/guide/well-cupid-is-now-magical-so-dont-use-this-guide-just-yet-cupid-underestimated-cutness-mid-duo-support-inc-video-hd-156#chapter6 Not promoting the guide, just saying that kind of information really adds to it! =D

If you add these in, it will be a perfect guide mate! Keep it up! =D

EDIT: Tried this build last night and loved it! Although I seem to put one point in trident in my first game and built up whilpool, can you explain your choice of leveling trident first? I did go with trident leveling first in my next games to see how this went!! =D
