Revision History

Hello everyone, and welcome to my first major venture outside of my original project, The Overarching Assault Guide. I've made this guide because it doesn't seem that there are many popular guides for Loki, and, although Greenevers' Conquest guide is awesome, it's not for Arena. I'm just enjoying playing him so much, I had to make this guide!

I'll assume you know the basic gist of Arena gameplay, so I won't be teaching or talking much about tickets, minions, etc., except in the direct context of Loki's gameplay. If you want general Arena information, I invite you to check out my other guide:

The Overarching
Arena Guide

This is a work in progress, as it should be. I'm always open to new ideas and different approaches.

Loki is a high-power, get-in & get-out kind of god, who employs his incredible mobility and stealth to the utmost advantage. The Arena setting is perfect for him, and with the frenetic pace of a constant teamfight, some of his general weaknesses, such as his distinct ability sounds under stealth, will often be overlooked or otherwise lost in the clash of battle.

........... Strengths ...........
+ Extremely high single-target damage
+ Cheap full build, quick to complete
+ Great escape capability
+ Controls minion wave
........ Weaknesses ........
- Very squishy
- Ability-reliant
- Has to get in close for max damage
- No sustained boxing capability

When going into an arena match planning to play Loki, you should probably choose quickly. He's extremely popular, as according to Smite Guru, he's chosen about 3.5% of the time, placing him around 2nd out of the 80 or so gods!

As of 2016/11/09, I have the following stats with Loki in Arena:

  • 55 games played (33 wins, 22 losses, 60% win rate)
  • 490 kills, 261 deaths, 632 assists

This build focuses on the most efficient way to get maximum damage for your abilities through high penetration. It is not meant for boxing and elongated fights. Let's get our hands bloody.

Smite Builder: If you haven't seen or used it before, check out this site by EliteOwnage. Similar in purpose to KrettCalc, but with an easy-to-use interface, you can theory-build to your heart's content, and set up head-to-heads to see how your build will fare against different enemies and builds.

Abilities

Passive:

Behind You!
Deal 20% bonus damage from basic attacks when hitting enemies from behind.

Of course, you want to utilize this whenever possible. Easier said than done. Enemies will constantly be changing directions, so this works best in the following situations:
  1. Against retreating enemies (easy bonus)
  2. Against minions, jungle camps, and the Arena Juggernaut (often with the aid of Decoy)

Skill #1:

Vanish
Loki disappears in a puff of smoke. While invisible (up to 4 seconds), he moves 35% faster and takes 25% less damage. His next basic attack from stealth or 2 seconds after applies a bleed for 2 seconds, and reveals him. 25% scaling.

Max this 2nd.

This skill can be used as an escape option (especially if Purification / Sanctuary is down). You can also use it to chase and pick off a lone enemy, or add to your damage if you feel safe enough without an invisible escape option. Use with a bit of discretion, since Relic CD is relatively long.

Skill #2:

Decoy
Loki spawns a decoy that taunts all nearby enemy minions. After 3 seconds, it explodes, dealing damage to all enemies in a radius. 100% scaling.

Finish this skill off last.

This skill GREATLY improves Loki's utility. Instead of being a one-shot god, using this completely stops the standard minion wave in its tracks, helping you push forward when your team is doing well, or giving you precious time to kill the wave before it enters your team's portal.

Has secondary, tricky function as a body block against a directed attack.

Skill #3:

Aimed Strike
Upon activation, the next basic attack does additional damage, and the enemy is also slowed by 25%. 100% scaling.

Max this first.

Your bread-and-butter damage ability. Strong one-hit damage + a slow, and when Hydra's Star/ Hydra's Lament is built, its damage increase piggy-backs onto this. At 30% CDR, you can use this almost every 5 seconds!

Ultimate:

Assassinate
Teleport to your ground target location. If an enemy god is within the radius, backstab that target, doing damage and stunning them for 1 second. 120% scaling.

Level this whenever you can.

When this ability is available, you'll mainly use this to initiate your damage combos. Best used against a partially damaged god, to help ensure a kill.

Can also be used as an alternate version of Combat Blink as a last-ditch escape attempt, but don't, unless it's absolutely necessary (e.g. you're trapped in Odin's Ring of Spears).

Ability Combos

Here are the standard combos you can use for Loki, depending on the availability of your ult, Assassinate.

Assassinate is down

Items

Standard Arena Build (with options)

Core Items

Starting Items: Combat Boots, 1 or 2 Mana Potions, Relic ( Purification or Sanctuary).

Item #1:

Warrior Tabi
40 power, 18% move speed.

Loki is an ability-based god, with great scaling on Decoy (for wave clear), Aimed Strike, and Assassinate. This provides the highest base power of all of the mobility items, and should be the standard first item.

Item #2:

Jotunn's Wrath
40 power, 10 penetration, 150 mana, passive (20% CDR).

Huge CDR, with high power and a bit of early penetration. Essential item on Loki to help spam his ult.

Item #3:

Hydra's Lament
40 power, 10% CDR, passive (for 8 seconds after using an ability, the next basic attack deals an additional 30% damage, and increases MP5 by 2.5 per 10% of your missing maximum mana).

This will get you close to maxing your CDR (now at 30%), and the additional damage your basic attack does after using any ability is significant. With no CD between ability use, the passive has the potential to provide a good amount of extra damage, especially when using combos.

Item #4:

Titan's Bane
30 power, 33% penetration. Huge penetration, becoming ever more effective the higher the enemy's protections.[/color]

Huge penetration, becoming ever more effective the higher the enemy's protections.

Item #5:

Brawler's Beat Stick
40 power, 20 flat penetration, passive (enemies hit by your abilities have 40% reduced healing and regen for 8 seconds).

This is a solid choice when you're facing a healer, multiple tanks, or tanks with healing potential (e.g. Chaac, Hercules). The high power and penetration works incredibly well, regardless, and the 20 flat penetration is key for this build.

Item #6: Utility (Choose One)

The Crusher
40 power, 20 flat penetration, passive (useless, no objectives in Arena).

Offensive Option #1 - Full Power: This item completes your full power/penetration build for maximum damage. Against enemies with 60-80 protections, you're essentially dealing true damage! Also very effective against enemies with higher protections. Trust me when I say that 40 power + 20 pen (Crusher) does more for your ability damage than items with higher power, such as Transcendence or Shifter's Shield.

Bloodforge
75 power, 15% lifesteal, passive (killing an enemy god forges a shield providing 200 +10 per player level for 20 seconds. While the shield is active, gain 10% move speed).

Offensive Option #2 - Kill Protection: Against multiple squishy gods, where you are confident of getting kills each time you initiate, this is an interesting, if expensive option. The lifesteal isn't going to do much for you, but the high power will help your general damage, and the shield and move speed will provide great protection to help get you back to safety.

Masamune
50 power, 10% move speed, passive (deal additional physical damagea against targets with more maximum health than you, equal to 1 power for every 10 health difference, max 50 damage).

Offensive Option #3 - Increased Mobility: Since items 1-5 do not have any health stats, any enemy that has built any health at all will have more health than Loki, which makes this a very functional item for some additional power. The added move speed is enticing for added mobility, especially if the enemy team doesn't stay together often, giving you opportunities for lone ganks.

Shifter's Shield
40 power, 20 magical & physical protections, passive (while over 50% health, gain 20 physical power. When below 50% health, gain +20 protections).

Hybrid Option - Power & Protections: If you want balanced protections (when you need it) but don't want to sacrifice added offense, this is the item to get. Don't look for this to be your defensive savior, but it can allow you to take a couple of extra hits while you escape.

Magi's Blessing
350 health, 15 magical protection, 15 physical protection, passive (absorbs 1 hard CC or root effect and gain 1 second of CC immunity. CD 70 seconds).

Defensive Option #1 - Anti-CC: You will get this for the health boost and the anti-CC, for the sole purpose of making like a tree (hi, Biff!). This is an emergency backup for when Purification is down, but the passive isn't very reliable.

Winged Blade
300 health, 20% CCR, 10% attack speed, 10% move speed, passive (when hit by a slow, you are immune to slows and your move speed is increased by 20% for 4 seconds. CD 30 seconds).

Defensive Option #2 - Mobility/Anti-Slow: The added base mobility can help you set up for a kill. However, you'll get this item for its defensive properties, as the high health, CC reduction, and even greater move speed when slowed can get you out of all sorts of trouble.

Bulwark of Hope
60 magical protection, 200 health, passive (when you take damage and are below 30% health, gain a shield with health equal to 150 + 10 per player level, CD 60 seconds).

Defensive Option #3 - Anti-Magical: If facing 4-5 magical enemies that play a strong team game (never separating themselves too much), and you're having issues with them (especially with CC from guardians), you should consider foregoing some damage for significant survivability. At level 20, the new passive gives you an added 450 health, which might save your bacon.

Gameplay & Tips

Throughout the game, remember that Loki isn't a team fighter, nor is he particularly adept at 1 v 1. You may feel a bit stupid or useless for mostly staying out of a big fight, but it's in your (and your team's) best interest. Counter your periods of ineffectiveness by watching the field, positioning yourself well, and helping gank a retreating, injured enemy to secure a kill or adding your damage at an opportune time in a bigger team fight.
