Pros
-You'll be incredibly strong
-4-1-2-3 combo almost always kills
-hunters/mages will hate you
-support lanes thanks to gank threat
-anyone under 50% health will hate you
-can tower dive with ult then escape with 1
-anyone retreating will hate you
-unaware assassins will hate you
Cons
-can be squishy at times
-if played wrong you will fall behind, badly
-super tanky cc guardians will almost always counter you
-bad in team fights for most of game
One of these things will happen
you will either get too many kills or
you will force the enemy team to waste 1-2 item slots on just defense (lowering their attack)
Okay so let's begin.
(how the item purchases work)
For every set beside the start of the game, you buy one item from that bar, the
wards are their because whenever you leave spawn take wards with you.
I am going to show you how to build Thor so he can be effective all game long (hopefully)
This strategy works well when you have 1 or 2 targets only, trying to counter an entire team will only work if they all build the same thing which is unlikely, this guide is to build against the solo laner, mid laner, and maybe the ADC. Just be careful for their support.
Bumba's Mask 800
Boots 300
Ward 50 x2
Healing Potion 50 x2
Goal of boots is to help out run opponents and give a small power boost, Bumba's mask will help you sustain to limit the trips to the spawn, + the 10% health from camps and mp5 will come in handy for sustaining. Make sure to ward so you can help your team.
Eventually upgrade to
Warrior Tabi which will be about 650.
SanctuarySanctuary vs. PurificationPurification
If your fighting against a team with heavy cc(crowd control) go for purification,
if not go for Sanctuary.
Then later on choose the other one (at level 12)
Always refill on Wards. A well place ward can save your teammate, can save you, or get you a kill on an enemy escaping into the jungle when he is low on health. Always! Always! buy wards and nag at your team as much as possible and tell them to ward. You don't know how many times I've died when a ward could have alerted me and i would be alive. VGN
Ok next item to buy is your choice, you must choose what fits your current situation best.
Titan's Bane 2050
Buy Titan's Bane first if your dealing with warrior's or guardian's. Or if the enemy your ganking is building protections early.
Jotunn's Wrath 2440
Buy Jotunn's Wrath if your main targets are squishy meaning they have low def (mages/hunters) or arn't building protections early.
For the most part i recommend
Jotunn's Wrath because of the 20% cooldown and mana boost really good for early game kills (spam out your ultimate). Also early game the 10 penetration is decent and it has 40 + power which is better than the 30 from
Titan's Bane. Enemies who build +60-80 protections early on would be more effected by
Titan's bane.
Enemy Def=30 - (33%) = 21 ehh ok
Enemy Def=70 - (33%) = 48 wow, good difference
Enemy Def=30 - 10 = 20 not bad, + 40 phy power
Enemy Def = 70 - 10 = 60 bad :( 40 phy power vs 60 phy def
Ultimately realize who your up against and build to fight them.
moving on...
Shifter's Shield is a good item for both damage and defense. However here is your next choice, decide whether the enemies you are up against are a little bit tanky or are they more on the damage side.
If your enemy is leaning toward damage, they probably have low defense or are a squishy hunter / mage. If this is your current situation then purchase
Shifter's Shield.
It's def will help you suck up some of that damage plus it will add 20 more defense when your below 50% health which will aid you in escaping.
Damage - When you are above 50% health it will add +20 power on to the original +40 which will give you +60 total.
So now those hunter/mages deal less damage because of your def plus your +60 power will destroy them because they haven't build protection yet.
Choose
or
(whichever you haven't bought yet) if the enemy is building defense or is just tanky and your trying to slow him down.
Say the enemy has 100 def early game because he bought armor early.
Let's look over how each item would do against a tanky early game god.
+
Enemy Def=100 - 10
= 90. 90def vs 140 pow (enemy god would be able to hold against you because he still has a lot of def)
+
Enemy Def=100 - (33%) = 67def vs 130pow (With titan's bane you would have a slightly better advantage)
+
Enemy Def=100 - (33%) = 67 - 10 = 57def vs 110pow (You have less power but ultimately you will do more damage according to smite formula(i believe) and you will get all the benfits from Jotunn's Wrath like mana and cooldown)
Base your decision on your current situation, for the most part if your enemy is getting tanky and building defense, go titan's bane and Jotunn's wrath. If not go for Shifter's Shield.
This one is quite simple, now that you've dealt with countering the enemy early in the game. Just buy the item you haven't purchased yet. Yeah simple.

The point of this is that it will help with both squishy and tanky gods, observe my awesome math skills=
Tanky Enemy Def=100 - (33%) = 67 - 10 = 57def vs 170pow (he's rekted)
Squishy Enemy Def=40 - (33%) = 27 - 10 = 17def vs 170pow (he's... well thats just not fair)
Super Tanky Def= 200 - (33%) = 134 - 10 = 124 vs 170Pow (This is unlikly but it is possible that an enemy guardian or maybe warrior has build their class to counter all your damage, if this is the case you won't do much to them in the early/mid game, remember that they have wasted all or most of their items on defense so their attacks won't hurt you either. Try to avoid these targets and aim for those who are squishy)
This decision is always the hardest for me in game,
Golden bow vs.
Transcendence
Golden Bow gives you an 8% speed boost, this is extremely helpful if you ambush an enemy with all your abilities but he still has 10% health left and he is running away, sometimes since you both will usually have boots he has a decent chance of escaping, however the golden bow will lower his chances because this means you will outrun him and usually finish the job.
Also if your in danger and your abilities are on cool down, this can also help you outrun your enemies and escape with your life.
Golden bow helps secure kills and live to fight another day.
Transcendence does not give you the 8% speed boost however with this build it will give you a +29 power boost over the bow (after 50 stacks) + 300 mana (eventually an extra 750 mana on top of that) + 6 mp5 which will help in sustaining.
After Transcendence is built it gives you more power than the golden bow, so maybe that enemy doesn't survive your 4-1-2-3 combo.
Plus the added mana and mp5 will help you stay in the fight longer. However this eliminates the speed boost so chasing enemies is harder and escaping is riskier.
Okay at this point you should have 304 power.... that's alot (assuming you got all 50 stacks and not including thor's passive or any other effects beside
shifter's shield) You can cap it with a jungle buff or potion of physical might and elixir of power for a total of = 396dam potion of physical might
elixir of power.
Now let's see how the enemy gods hold up
(High Atk Hunter/Mage/Assasin) Def=50 -(33%) = 33 - 10 = 23def vs 304pow (look that's really scary, your 4-1-2-3 combo will wipe out all hunters/mages that are squishy)
(Average Defensive Warrior) Def =120 - (33%) = 80 - 10 = 70def vs 304pow (At this point you might still be wiping them out as long as they have around 50-70% health)
(Super tanky all-around guardian) Def=200 - (33%) = 134 - 10 =124 def vs 304 pow (to take down guardians you will need the help of your team, realistically you will do around 20-50% damage but ultimately try not to ambush a guardian unless they have around 30% or so health remaining)
(That one guy who unrealistically built against your damage) def=300 - (33%) =201 - 10 =191def vs 304pow (To be honest ignore this guy completely because you won't kill him alone, he probably wont kill you either but he might try and root or cc you so his damage dealers will. Avoid him and attack low health enemies or hunters/mages)
Having 304 Power is awesome but unnecessary. Eventually the game can last very long and you have to help end it. Thor in the late game becomes very weak against warriors and guardians. Also he isn't very good in team fights with this build.
You do a lot of damage (304). however it is unneccesary, near the end of the game i reccomend (something i myself do often) is switch your
Shifter's Shield for a
Mantle of Discord.
Doing this lowers your power to 244 but you gain 15% cooldown which should now total to 35% in total, helping you use your abilities often in team fights,
plus
now your phy def = 132
and your mag def= 108
You now will no longer be 2-3 shoted by strong gods because you are no longer squishy so now you can stay in the team fight and help. Yes you are weaker in attack but that can easily be fixed,
Go for the jungle buff (atk damage) and also purchase a potion of physical mightpotion of physical might and a
elixir of power.
In total your 244 power now becomes
+(45%) + 30 = 138
new total power = 382
That is incredibly close to the [400] power cap for Thor. So now you can survive a team fight, your damage is basically maxed out, and your ultimate can eliminate every squshiy out their.
For the most part always try to use your ultimate to start a fight,
your fights should end really fast, staying for too long is dangerous.
Always target enemies with 50% health or lower or
hunters and mages with 50-70% health or 100% if they have no armor built against you.
or 80-100% health if they are alone and no one can help them anytime soon.
Remember always ult, as soon as you do keep clicking your mouse to basic attack while doing all your abilities.
4-1-2-3 combo.
At 300 power this is the total damage it should do
710 + 300 + 300 + 300 + stun + 600 + 300 + 235+235+235+235+235 = 3685
ult--basic---1---basic----2/(1 returning hammer)basic--3---3---3---3---3
Total damage is 3685, yes it's a bit overkill but this is not including any enemy defense, but also remember that this not your final attack damage, we didn't include thor's passive ability or jungle buff/ power consumables.
