Introduction

Hi everyone. I love playing this god, and I want to share what tips and strategies work best for me.

So in a nutshell, here are Odin's strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths

Weaknesses

Here are some terms and abbreviations I use throughout the guide:
Terms and Abbreviations

Skill Order

A curious topic I wanted to explore in this guide: I see some people build Transcendence on Odin in arena for more damage. However, will you benefit with the raw power from Transcendence? Or will you do better with more penetration? The chapter: Build Comparisons and a Discussion on Transcendence vs. Titan's Bane will give you an idea on which is a better fit on an ability based, damage build for Odin. I'll also compare some early game items and a few listed offensive items to explore their effects on Odin's damage. I'm hoping you learn something out of these comparisons to help you choose items more efficiently for your future builds.
Legit Spoiler. Only open if you don't wanna read all the test data

Arena Guide

INTRODUCTION
I like playing Odin with close to 40% CDR (maximum) in Arena. In some cases, 20% CDR is acceptable for me, but I personally will not play him below 20% CDR. This allows me to consistently harass enemies and escape more efficiently.

He's great for supporting and initiating. Keep in mind if you miss your Raven Shout and Lunge combination, you're pretty much a sitting duck. However, if you are great at aiming your abilities and you want lots of damage, you can try your luck with lots of penetration items (See Bird Bomb Damage Build).

In the following sections, I'll explain why I chose certain items for my builds:

Ability Combinations, Tips, and Teamwork

1) The infamous "Bird Bomb"
Use Raven Shout followed by Lunge.

Using Lunge detonates Raven Shout shield. If you're trying to escape, use Lunge first, then use Raven Shout.

2) Gungnir's Might
Slows down an enemy on BOTH hits. Great for harassment or escaping.

Allied gods that pair very well with Ring of Spears:

Joust Tips

INTRODUCTION
It's best to play Odin with a team that complements him very well in Joust. I prefer Cupid and Zeus/ Hades due to their amazing synergy with Ring of Spears.

If you don't have a good composition, you might as well just play a real guardian.

I usually play in casuals with friends, and we're pretty synchronized. I play as an offensive support, so that's the only example build I've included in this guide.

Unfortunately, I don't have as much experience playing Joust as I do Arena. If you have specific questions about the Joust build, please leave a comment and I'll get back to you ASAP. I appreciate your feedback!

So here's the quick rundown on the build:
  • Joust isn't like Arena where your base is 3 feet away from the battleground. You're going to need some sustain. Buy health and mana potions to stay on the battlefield longer. This is important because if you have to constantly return to base, you can't farm experience/gold from minion waves. Mark of the Vanguard is my preferred starter item since I need to soak up damage for my team (and minions HURT early game).
  • Reinforced Greaves: I need to be tanky, so this is my preferred boots.
  • Breastplate of Valor: I build this second to rush CDR and have early mana sustain. The physical protections are also very helpful.
  • Void Shield: I build this 3rd or 4th depending on the situation.
  • Shogun's Kusari: 3rd or 4th depending on the situation. The 20% CCR combined with the 20% from greaves gives me my max CCR. I've finished my offensive support build for my ADC.
  • The last two items are completely your choice. Consider damage options if your team is pulling ahead or strong defense items if hard hitting enemies are starting to come online.

RELICS

Meditation Cloak
Good first relic to pick up. Keeps you and your guys alive.
Meditation Cloak

Also a good first relic to pick up. Good for chasing a kill or setting up your ultimate for your ADC and mage to follow up. If you set up and initiate properly, your team will get early kills, you'll get Ring of Spears stacks, and you guys will pull ahead of the enemy team. Unlike Arena, you have snowballing potential in Joust.

TIPS
  • Your Bird Bomb has very good damage. Use it to steal camps and bull demon king.

  • Unsuspecting Bird Bombs are the ones that are hardest to dodge. Go into the jungle (the area between the Bull Demon King and the Main Lane) for some surprise Bird Bombs.
Yell: FOR ASGARD!!! As you leap out of the jungle

  • You can use Ring of Spears to block off objectives and almost every lane in the Joust map. For example, you can block off one of the entrances to the Bull Demon King, buying your team some time, if the enemy is coming to steal the objective.
Yell: YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! As you slam Gungnir on the ground

    Fly you fools

Needless to say, you can also block off the enemy tower/phoenix/titan to limit enemy interference as you and your team attack the objectives.

Build Comparisons and a Discussion on Transcendence vs. Titan's Bane

TRANSCENDENCE VS. TITAN'S BANE
Alright, let me give you guys some insight on how certain items affect Odin's damage. Again, I hope you can use this data to better plan future builds for ability based gods.

So... if you're going for a damage build, and you have enough flat penetration, should you build high physical power with Transcendence or build EVEN MORE pen (percentage based penetration) with Titan's Bane?

Keep the following in mind:
Frostbound Hammer build:

Brawler's Beat Stick build:

Void Shield build:

Let's further compare the Void Shield and Brawler's Beat Stick builds with a fully Stacked Ring of Spears

BALANCED BUILD COMPARISON
Let's see how the Balanced Build compares to the damage build at level 20. Again, this was tested against a level 20 Artemis bot.
The items for the build are:

In the past, I would build Transcendence instead of The Crusher in my balanced builds. So just for the hell of it, let me show you the comparison:

EARLY GAME COMPARISON
Alright. Let's see how Odin's damage is affected by different 2nd item choices. We'll look at Jotunn's Wrath, Shifter's Shield, and Void Shield.

Hi boogie...

Speaking of boogie...
  • That's a pretty big picture. Good picture though.

  • Good listing of strengths & weaknesses. Forcing enemies to waste a slot on Phantom Veil is definitely a pro...but fact that Veil exists is obviously a con. I think you wrote that up just fine. I might also point out that, besides being somewhat easy to dodge, if you commit to a bird bomb, you have almost nothing left...you've sacrificed both your escape/leap and your tanky/shield aspect.

  • LOL on the spoiler.

  • Oh, and you talk about being a sitting duck after missing bird bomb in the intro.

  • FYI, spoilers within spoilers always have the inside spoilers fully opened. Suggest against it, and just find a better presentation for when you've got options on a specific item like boots.

  • You could provide a bit more explanation on some of the items...for example, with Hide of the Nemean Lion, you might more specifically say it's not just annoying physical gods...cuz Herc fits that billing, but rather...it's a very specific counter to basic attacking gods (e.g. most hunters and some assassins, and more specifically great against crit builds). As another example, Void Shield can be functional, but it's a bit weaker the later the game gets...and also, you could mention that as it provides an aura of protection reduction, it's a more functional choice the more physical gods YOU have on your team.

  • If you just straight up know Titan's Bane is better and you prefer it, I would just eliminate Transcendence altogether from the situational items. Also, you're already getting Breastplate of Valor...you don't need any extra mana, so you're mostly just getting it for the power, you need to stack it, etc...basically, it's unnecessary.

  • Now, with the build itself, you and I have slightly different preferences in build order...I personally like giving options depending on situation. Where you always have Jotunn's Wrath 2nd, what if you end up being the main tank? I'd likely get protection before Jotunn's. What if there are way bigger magical threats? I'd consider Genji's Guard instead of BoV. Things like that. Jotunn's is fine if you're not the main tank and you're not always using bird bomb, and saving Raven Shout sometimes in the early stages for added survivability.

  • In your balanced example, you don't have any magical protection (and no added health to offset that) until item #5. I understand the appeal (although I'd consider it situational) of The Crusher...but again, I would prefer that magical protection and health before it.

  • In your tanky build, you do have the greaves for added protections, but if I'm calling it tanky, I'd be getting Bulwark of Hope before Titan's Bane. If you're tanky, you want to focus on soaking up damage before dealing some added damage.

  • You might consider Spirit Robe as an alternative to Mantle of Discord in your damage build...2,900 gold as 3rd item is a bit expensive, but I understand the utility of the passive. Just a thought.

  • I like your experimental arena build. Still think Spirit Robe is a functional alternative to Mantle of Discord...and (at work computer, can't see youtube on it) if that's the Sloth video I think it is, he's also comparing Spirit Robe and he also determined it as a good option.

  • Blink Rune should just straight up be the first relic. It's a necessity. You talk about getting Purification Beads first for messy CC situations...but if you blink in, you won't be using your Raven Shout for added protection, and you also have your Lunge as an escape. I'd say you should usually be more than safe if you initiate properly.

  • In your ability combinations chapter, you have only one line talking about using the Ring to save yourself or a teammate. I'd give examples here to better emphasize this, as it's a key function of the ability, especially with the low CD that's going to drastically outwork Blink Rune's availability.

  • I like that you did a comparison of different items. I didn't run numbers on this myself, but it's good to see a visual...I've never been a proponent of Arena Odin using Trans. That said, you talk about damage against a squishy, and yes, they should probably be your main target...but with the fact of Titan's Bane being more effective the higher an enemy's protections, you're going to do increasingly higher damage against tanky enemies as well. Just something to point out.

  • So...in the end...I'd say the general builds as a whole are functional. I'm not as sold on The Crusher as you are, and I wouldn't wait (in most cases except against only 1 magical god) to get my first magical protection as item #5, but these builds can and will work. And you definitely, definitely need Blink 1st. Hope these comments have been helpful.

Hey Bran,

Thank you so much for your insightful feedback. I'll make the necessary changes.
Some points I'd like to discuss:
  • You're right, there should be an explanation somewhere saying you should use your judgement and get some protections before jotunn's if you have to be the main tank. Sorry, completely forgot about adding that.
  • Likewise, I should make mention that it may be a good idea to build Bulwark of Hope before The Crusher if magical enemies are a threat. I meant to put that down somewhere. I should just make a note that players should build according to their own judgement instead of flat out saying something like, "I build it 4th due to the attack speed boost"
  • Thank you for pointing out the flaw in my tanky example build. That was a mistake and will be corrected.
  • I think I should expand a bit on the situational items. For example, If there's a really good, enemy Freya, it may be advisable to buy Winged Blade and Runic Shield. I think my builds right now are mostly focusing on damage dealing and simple tanking instead of countering and supporting. What are your thoughts on this?
  • As for getting Blink Rune first: The reason I get it second is because I've had some bad experiences where my team mates weren't reliable and didn't follow up with my initiates. So it's just been instinct for me to get Purification Beads first. That's why I mention getting beads first: to test out your team. If they help you and communicate with you, buy blink rune next. If they are absolutely unreliable, buy Aegis Amulet instead.
But you're probably right. To become a better player, I think I should get used to buying and using Blink Rune first, even with potentially unreliable team mates.
Should I remove the option of getting Aegis Amulet?

@boogie, sweet. Oh, forgot one thing...rather than default to auto-level, you really should indicate build order for people reading the guide.

Generally, it should be max Raven, then Lunge, then Gungnir, then Ult. Check my guide for reference.

And as for an enemy Freya, I wouldn't use Runic Shield as a counter...she's not so reliant on magical power...rather, you just need to slow her down as much as possible. Catch her in your ring when you know her ult is down (huge attack speed reduction), get decent magical protection (Bulwark is fine), and consider, if she's not the only basic attacker, to get something more like Midgardian Mail or Witchblade as a counter, rather than Winged Blade.

For the relics, yes...I've gotten screwed here and there, but I think some of those were still avoidable. Never initiate so far ahead of teammates that your ult isn't a threat...if they're close, you can at least retreat in some numbers, and remember that the ring is only a threat because it's a trap for your teammates to deal damage...not you.

And should you remove Aegis Amulet? No, if there's an enemy Anubis or Scylla or Poseidon, it can still be helpful. First should be a mandatory Blink Rune, second options could be Aegis, Beads, or more team-oriented things like Magic Shell (or even Phantom Veil if there's an enemy Odin and you're being a wonderful teammate for those that have no escapes and are too stupid to get it themselves).
