Introduction

Alright, let me start off by saying this section has no strategy! If you want to get right to that then go ahead and skip to the next section Pros&Cons!!

For those who care... This is my first guide ever on anything. I just felt that the majority of Sobek guides seemed to focus on play styles that didn't really suit me so I thought I'd share mine. Also not many of his guides are not up to date with the current patches! Also you may notice some similarities between this and another Sobek guide by JELLYz titled Sobek - Charge to win! I very much liked the layout of their guide and I also started playing Sobek using this build guide. I would also strongly suggest checking it out here on SmiteFire by clicking the that guide's title as a link, because their guide uses a different build. I do not believe, however, that their guide is up to date with current patches so do take note of that.

This guide is meant to be player friendly for both new and old players so I used wording both could understand. Also at times this guide may be a bit wordy because I have a lot of input to give, but I have tried to make it bearable. If you have any questions or criticism post a comment and I'll try to reply. And remember, by no means is this an absolute guide! It is simply a few of my favorite builds and how I use them.

As with anything try to adapt it to your particular playstyle and make it better! And most importantly HAVE FUN!! It is just a game try not to be discouraged if something doesnt work out

Pros / Cons

Pros:

  • His Blessing of the Nile now gives up to +45 to physical power and +30 to defenses this allows for great early game
  • His Sickening Strike reduces the target's healing by 50%
  • A great set of disrupting abilities
  • Amazing utility
  • Very tanky, if built right he can initiate the Gold Fury and Fire Giant earlier on if he gets help or even solo those camps late game

Cons:
  • With the recent update his Charge Prey now hits minions this makes it harder to escape/chase
  • Difficult to farm/push without the right ally
  • Missing or hitting a minion with his Charge Prey can leave you very vulnerable

Skills

Blessing of the Nile (Passive)

Sobek's basic attacks that hit an enemy grant him +15 physical power and +10 physical and magical protection for 4 seconds (max up to 3 stacks)

It is very important to take advantage of this passive, especially early on. I will usually try to attack the melee minions 3 times before I attack an enemy god at all. By doing this you will recieve less damage and deal more damage.

Charge Prey
Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 mana
Cooldown: 15s

Sobek charges forward at a frenzied pace. If Sobek hits an enemy in his path, he stuns them doing 70/110/150/190/230 (+50% of your magical power) magical damage and throws them behind Sobek

This is probably Sobek's most useful ability. It can be used to chase an enemy that is trying to escape as well as use the dash as a somewhat decent escape mechanisim, but be careful not to hit minions as that will cause you to miss your target god or hinder your escape. It is also great for initiating team fights by throwing a squishier enemy towards allies. Use this ability with caution, however because you can cause an ally to miss an attack. One final thing I would like to mention about this is that if Arachne uses Drain Life on an ally you can throw her off by aiming this at the ally she is on.

Tail Whip
Cost: 70\80\90\100\110 mana
Cooldown: 12s

After a .4s buildup Sobek whips around in a circle, knocking enemies back and doing 80/125/170/215/260 (+50% of your magical power) magical damage.

This is ability is all about disruption. Not only can you use it knock back an enemy into a tower or ally, but if properly timed it can temporarily cancel enemy abilities. As soon as they land they should be able to use it again unless, however they had already activated it. An example would be with Anubis's Plague of Locusts. Also much like the previous ability you can use this to knock Arachne off an ally while she is using Drain Life. Be sure to try and use this ability RIGHT AFTER Charge Prey to keep them from immidiately dashing/leaping away it also does a bit of extra damage and if you have Gem of Isolation it slows them even more further hindering their escape. But use caution with this ability because you can cause an ally to miss their skill shot.

Sickening Strike
Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 mana
Cooldown: 13s

Sobek does an axe attack that damages all enemies in front of him for 60/100/140/180/220 (+30% of your magical power) magical damage and lowers their healing recieved by 50% for 4s. In addition, Sobek heals 20/30/40/50/60 (+10% of your magical power) for each enemy hit.

This ability has 3 uses first and most importantly it is great for getting clutch kills so if an enemy is running or you are low on health in a 1 v 1 this should be your tool of salvation. Its second use works best if you are using Meditation because you can use it to keep your health up and sustain your lane in the early game, or it can also be used to heal while trying to escape a bad situation just be sure to hit as many enemies as possible. Its third use is probably my favorite and it also works best with Meditation, you use it on the enemy god/s as much as possible in an attempt to keep poking them and reduce their healing from Healing Potions, abilities, and their own HP5 so they can't lane as long. This use of the ability can also work well with Divine Ruin, if you are willing to substitute another item for it, as it provides additional healing to yourself and further reduces their healing especially if you used another ability before Sickening Strike.

Lurking in the Waters
Cost: 80/90/100/110/120 mana
Cooldown 90s

Sobek submerges himself into a pool of water for 4 seconds. While sobek remains underwater, he regens mana and is immune to crowd control. Enemies within the pool are slowed. When Sobek emerges, he damages all enemies within the radius for 350/500/650/800/950 (+80% of your magical power) magical damage. Cancelling the ability early results in decreased damage

This ability has a large radius so use that to your advantage. Try to keep your distance from melee gods while also trying to hit as many enemies as possible. Another technique I try to use is I will try to get 3 melee hits before I activate this ability so that my Blessing of the Nile reduces the damage I take while submerged. The other great thing about this ability is that it regens your mana providing you further sustain. The slow from this ability works great for two reasons it allows allies to chase enemies more easily and it works well with other Area of Effect slows like Ymir's Shards of Ice as it will increse damage dealt and further hinder escape. Other great things about this ability is that as long as some of your minions are in a tower this ability's slow will not cause a tower to target you the slow will also stack with Creeping Curse and Gem of Isolation allowing your ally more time to attack. NOTE: ALL of Sobek's abilities work best with Creeping Curse and Gem of Isolation as the extra slows will keep them in your tower and ally's range for more time

Items

Now a quick foreword on this Items chapter... I'll try my best to give reasoning and situations for the items/abilities that I, MYSELF, purchase. If you disagree then good for you, but no hate mail. Just build your Sobek better and if you do then great! Just be sure to make a guide about this great build of yours so I and other players can use it to get better.

Tanky Builds

Core Items

Healing Potion
This item gives +50 HP5 for 25 seconds. This is useable even lategame and try not to start/enter a fight without using one. Health Regen is a Tank's best friend in a fight especially when stacked with buffs and items. Always try to keep a healing potion on hand.

Reinforced Boots Reinforced Boots
Since Sobek doesnt really have many viable options (in my opinion) with speed boosting items I feel Reinforced Boots are the best choice. Especially early game with well rounded defenses and a bit of HP5. I always start the game with purchasing Tier 1 of this item and then max it Second. Once maxed, the reduction to all crowd control durations is great.

Breastplate of Valor
For a tank physical protection is ALWAYS important. Minions/Creeps, basic attacks, towers (yes I said towers), and Gold Fury and Fire Giant all deal physical damage. So even against a team using heavy magical power physical protection is good. I buy this item over similar items because of the mana and cooldown it provides which is important on Sobek. I will usually max this item First and if I am playing against a heavy physical team I will usually purchase Tier 1 of this item at the start of the match with Reinforced Boots. If this item doesnt suit you because you would like a little more magic damage early game or because you prefer MP5 over mana and cooldown then consider picking up Wall of Absolution instead.

Well Rounded Tank Items

Gem of Isolation
I really like this item on Sobek, it gives health, mana, and magic power! And these are all important for him to have, but the best thing is once this item reaches Tier 3 it adds a slow to all of your abilities - even submerged with Lurking In The Waters!! And these slows will REALLY help your ally get that last bit of damage in. I like to max it Third. If using slows is your thing really consider purchasing Creeping Curse as it will further increase these slows.

Gauntlet of thebes
Not a whole lot of strategy behind this one. It gives a lot of health and health regen. A very good item to have, in my opinion, I max it Fourth. This item works well with Ankh of the Golem as it increases your basic attack damage to help take down those towers.

Stone of Gaia
This item increases your health regen even further than before along with adding a nice mana regen and magic protection. I usually max this item Fifth however, if I find myself laning against two mages I will try to purchase it earlier.

Wall of Absolution
I like to pick this up very late game for a little extra magic power and physical protection against towers and physical carries towards the end of the game. I will change this item up sometimes though depending on how my opponents and allies are built. My favorite items to replace this with are Void Stone, Rod of Tahuti, Hide of Leviathan, or Sovereignty.

Heavy Physical Tank and Tower Destroyer

Hide of the Nemean Lion
As I mentioned before just about everything does physical damage in one way or another, and if you are up against a bunch of physical carries using a lot of physical penetration then you need to take advantage of that. And this is a great item to start with as it is very cheap. Also its Tier 3 ability can help keep a carry from recieving full effects from any lifesteal they may have. I max this item Third

Mystical mark Mystical Mark
At Tier 3 Mystical Mark stacks really well with Hide of the Nemean Lion to keep an enemy from getting their full lifesteal effects. I max this item Fourth. However, if you feel you have enough physical protection, but need more health and health regen consider picking up Gauntlet of Thebes instead.

Ankh of the Golem
Honestly this item isn't all that tanky but, I like the subtle boost it gives to taking down a tower with the increase it gives to attack speed and attack power it also gives health and physical protection which is nice. I like to max this item Fifth, but if you would rather use something else that increases his magical power instead, consider Gem of Isolation, Wall of Absolution, or Warlock's Sash

Sovereignty
For a final item in this build I love this one because it helps the whole team too! However in a match against several physical carries you may find that one of your allies already purchased this item (be sure to check your allies' builds with the "Tab" key regularly) if this happens then Midgardian Mail is a good choice. My only problem with this is that it's an item that works best if you're running away which you shouldn't be doing much since you are a tank. With a build like this prepare to destroy towers and tank Fire Giant with ease

Heavy Magical Tank

Stone of Gaia
This is a great item to use against mages. Magical protection and great regen perfect for walling a mage. Max this item Third

magi's blessingMagi's Blessing
A great item to frustrate any mage user ever! With the aura this item provides you can laugh at your enemies as their ultimates are wasted! Now just because you can take a free ability hit doesnt mean you should. Always dodge when you can, but dont forget you have to try and keep these abilities from hitting your allies too. This is definitely more of an early game item (the more abilities it blocks the better) so I tend to max this item Fourth

Gem of Isolation
As I've stated before, with Sobek slowing abilities really help everyone, and as there are not many magical protection items this is pretty useable with its additional health increase it provides. Max this item Fifth

Void Stone
This puppy here gives magical power and penetration along with magical protection. It's a great item for everyone's favorite crocodile and I like to max this item Sixth.

Optional Abilities

Aegis Amulet
I think this ability is perfect for Sobek. I really like to buy it at the start of the match to make his early game defenses VERY formidable. Also along with giving sobek a way to avoid damage from several attacks it allows him to better tank tower damage. Running into a tower and taking its aggression then activating Aegis Amulet gives your minions and/or your ally 2 more seconds to destroy the tower which could mean everything. Be CAUTIOUS when using this ability as enemy gods can simply suround you and wait for your invulnerability to drop.

meditation Meditation
This ability isn't all that important unless you are mid laning however I would never say it is a bad buy as it provides sustainability

Creeping Curse
Probably one of THE BEST abilities for Sobek. It combines with his Lurking In The Waters very well, and can really help allies get kills after you throw an enemy to them with Charge Prey. Not only that, but it can help you and your allies to chase down fleeing enemies or even escape from chasing enemies

Hand of the Gods
This item can help get Sobek crazy amazing early game power and sustainability as long as you can jungle fairly well. While jungling as Sobek try to focus on the green healing buff, the yellow defense buff, and the blue mana regen buff also remember that jungle camps respawn after 4 minutes so try to keep track of when to revisit the camp so an enemy doesnt get it

Ward
I know this is technically an item, but never underestimate it as it can help you see if the enemy is coming to gank you or attacking an important jungle camp like the Gold Fury or Fire Giant. In my opinion this is a better buy if you are playing mid lane but it is never ever bad.

Conquest Strategy

In this chapter I will provide a strategy on how to tank in each lane along with partners that lane well with Sobek.

One thing I would like to mention is that it is best to use Sobek when you have a friend you can verbally communicate with while you play so you can most effectively use Sobek without causing your lane partner to miss an ability.

Left Lane

If you are in left lane then your laning partner will probably be in the jungle a lot getting buffs and trying to set up ganks so you have to be able to hold your own. I like to let them push so that they are just out of your tower's range, and as soon as your partner is ready, throw one back into your tower's range with Charge Prey and then use your Tail Whip to keep them there longer. Chances are either you and your lane partner will have a kill or your partner will get a double kill which is best. A fed physical carry is better than a fed tank.

After the first time that happens the enemy will probably be overly cautious. If they are farm your levels on minions until your partner comes back to get another kill or help you push. If however, the enemy continues to push just let them push as it will be another easy kill for you and your partner. Be careful not to overpush alone as an enemy gank could kill you if you aren't prepared.

Middle Lane

If you are in Mid Lane you will most likely be all alone except for the few times an ally will come gank for you. At the start of the match you should definitely consider purchasing Meditation as you will need the sustainability. If you aren't careful Sobek can quickly fall behind a ranged god try to keep your health up wth Sickening Strike though try not to fall below half mana that way you can still get a kill if your enemies health is low enough.

Remember to move in zig zags frequently so the enemy doesn't always land their abilities. If you ever get pushed to your tower throw the enemy in the tower's range and get a kill so you can push. Also do not be afraid to run in a tower's range with your Charge Prey if you have enough health to get a kill. It is really important to just be patient and wait for an ally's help or for your enemy to mess up, because Sobek may have difficulty pushing. And MOST IMPORTANTLY watch your mini map and pay attention when left or right lane call a missing enemy as they could be coming to gank you!!! If you die an enemy could easily destroy your tower if they have help.

Right Lane

If you are in right lane you will typically have a consistent laning partner. Your enemies in this lane will most likely have a jungler so be prepared for frequent ganks. It is important to try and help your partner level up as fast as possible while keeping the enemies low level. A great way to do this is by getting an enemy god behind their archer minions, but keeping yourself between the enemy gods and minions. This is effective because while your ally last hits enemy minions for more gold and xp, the enemy gods are too far away to recieve much gold or xp. A great way to do this is harass them with Tail Whip so they are forced to keep their distance, and if they are low on health throw them towards your ally with Charge Prey so they can grab a quick kill. Don't forget to use Tail Whip immidiately after Charge Prey

The best time to push your lane is just after killing an enemy god as one enemy god shouldnt be too much trouble for the two of you. However if you find it difficult to get near the tower while the enemy plays defense you can always throw them out of their tower's range for a kill for you or your partner.

Good Laning Partners

Ra
Ra has a great support move in his Solar Blessing as it both both heals Sobek and increases his defenses. Ra's Divine Light also puts a slow on the enemy which will hinder their escape

Cupid
Cupid has amazing sustainability with Sobek because healing Sobek with Share The Love also restores Cupid's mana. Also Cupid's Heart Bomb can be used to stun an enemy Sobek has just thrown. And as if these weren't enough Fields Of Love add an additional slow if used with Lurking In The Waters and combined, the two will do massive damage

Anhur
This is a very good pair but it takes almost flawless teamwork. The combos all require Sobek to throw or bounce an enemy god to the right position so Anhur can Impale them to a wall stunning them. This can be very hard to pull off however unless both players are prepared. Anhur can also take advantage of the slow from Lurking In The Waters to stun an enemy and keep them inside Sobek's Area of Effect

Honestly Sobek works well with many gods, but it is best if they have a stun or slow

Team Work

In team fights it is important to do three things. First, try and remove a weaker enemy god from their team with Charge Prey and throw them to your team and that poor god's death. Second, take as much damage for your allies as you can so your carries can focus on killing instead of survivng. Lastly, try to chase down any low health runners with your charge prey or Lurking In The Waters.

If the enemy team has lost 3 or more gods in a team fight try to rally your team to take on Fire Giant - before the enemies respawn - for that final rush. Be sure to tank the damage from the Fire Giant by attacking it first

Closing Statement

I hope you all got something useful from my guide, and I hope you enjoyed it as well. I would like to thank you all for reading, and I would appreciate any helpful comments or criticisms.
