Introduction

DISCLAIMER!!!

I am a human being, I can make mistakes. Please comment if you notice any spelling errors or do not agree with anything in this guide. Also leave a reason and ill try to get back to you as soon as I can.

I might get some hate for that awful pun, but I thought it was super creative

This is the part of most guides where people just get a picture of the God and then proceed to insert some lore about them. I don't think that is needed really so I will proceed with the guide with a novice and an expert's mind in consideration.

Items

I will now proceed to explain the item choices, why and when you should build them.

First Buy

Your starting build for almost 100% of your games. Bluestone works really well with Tyr's abilities and will help with your dps for trades and clears
Boots for the early mobility and health and multi potions for the sustain in lane

Core Items

*Warrior's Boots are pretty much the only boots you should be getting on Tyr. None of the other 3 boots benefit Tyr in anyway.
Then, this is where your decision as a player comes in.

A defensive as a second item on a warrior is almost compulsory at the moment with the rise of burst Gods and late game Gods being really strong at the moment. So you could either pick up a Hide of the Urchin or a Breastplate.
After you get either of those, Pick up a Jotunn's Wrath for cdr, pen and just more overall damage.

Jotunn's Wrath is a must buy on pretty much any physical God who is ability based. Cant afford not to pick is up.

Damage Items

With the changes to Brawler's being applied to abilities rather than only basic attacks, its a valuable last damage item for ability based warriors. Also, Ancile is really good at the moment with its insane passive. Build only one of these items if you are playing more of a tank role for your team instead of the carry.

Situational Items

Basically these items will depend of the compesition. But if you are unsure you can pick op some of these items:
Bulwark of Hope: Literally one of the best defensive items in the game at the moment. The Shield is so versatile because it blocks both physical and magical damage. It also sits if if doesnt get depleted. A must buy late game
Gauntlet of Thebes: A good sustain item if you are falling behind in lane and need to get to t
Winged Blade: If they have loads of slows that really get annoying. E.g. Kulkulkan, Ymir, Nemesis, Gem of Isolation.
Midguardian Mail: If they have a team focused around basic attacks. E.g. Hunters, Osiris, Kali, Mercury

Really the choice is up to you. But make sure you analyse the game first before making your purchase.

Actives

You really should be getting Blink and Teleport most of your games.
You will need blink if you team needs an initiator. You really don't want to use your ultimate to engage a teamfight. Blink saves you that stress.
Teleport for a whole variety of reasons. To get back to lane if you are behind, teleport to help your team or just doing if for a cheeky backdoor. Just saying that teleport is an active that is really strong right know because of how game changing it is.
Only get Curse if they have a lot of healing AND your team has an initiator.

Skills

List of Tyr's Passive and Abilities

Passive

Unyielding - Stuns, Taunts, Fears, Intoxicate, and Mesmerize cannot affect Tyr for longer than 1s.

Main reason why Tyr doesnt need beads. but some crowd controll like silences do act the full duration. So be weary of that.

First Ability

Fearless - Tyr charges forward, immune to knockup, damaging enemies. Assault Stance: Tyr pushes all enemies along with him, hitting them 2 times and knocking them up in the air. Guard Stance: Tyr hits each enemy only once, passing through them.

Damage: 40/90/140/190/240 (+50% of your physical power)

Tyr's Bread for clearing lane. Quite self explanitory really. In assault stance you knock all enemies in the direction you are facing. Guard stance makes you dash through all enemies while dealing damage.
NOTE: When you blink in. Remember to try and Fearless the enemies towards your team. This will help secure kills better.

Second Ability

Power Cleave - Tyr makes a massive melee attack, hitting all enemies within a 180 degree cone. Assault Stance: Enemies that are knocked up in the air are knocked away. Guard Stance: Tyr heals twice for the first enemy hit, and once for each additional enemy (max 3).

Damage: 80/115/150/185/220 (+65% of your physical power)
Healing: 25/45/65/85/105

Ahh, you see I didn't make a mistake. Tyr's BUTTER for clearing and his combo. It basically hits in a cone in front of you. You will be maxing this in lane for more effective clear.
NOTE: No matter how many minions you hit with your Power Cleave in Guard Stance, it will only heal you as if you hit 3 minions. Please remember this in your games. Even I forget sometimes :)

Third Ability

Change Stance - Tyr changes between Assault and Guard stances. Changing stances refreshes the cooldown on Fearless and Power Cleave. Assault Stance: Gain Physical Power. Guard Stance: Gain Protections.

Assault Stance: 10/20/30/40/50 Physical Power
Defense Stance: 10/20/30/40/50 Protections

Really not much to say here. Assault Stance = More Power, Guard Stance = More Protections. Remember this when chasing, retreating, ganking etc.

Ultimate

Lawbringer - Tyr leaps through the air, bringing indiscriminate justice upon all enemies in the target area, and slowing them.

Damage: 150/225/300/375/450 (+120% of your physical power)
Slow Duration: 3s
Slow: 25%

Now dont go mental when you see that insane scaling on that ult. Its one of the main reason why he doesnt need a power build. That and the fact hes a warrior, he needs protections.
NOTE: Tyr is immune to crowd control while leaping. Use it to escape incoming crowd control or just to escape danger.

Pros / Cons

Pros

Amazing clear in Solo vs. most Gods.
Useful crowd control for teamfights.
Insane lockdown.
Incredibly persistant. Really hard to shove off as a carry.
Can help carry your assassins, hunters and mages to late game. This is because he snowballs the early to mid game if hes ahead.
Has an escape for sticky situations.
Has a pretty dank dance.

Cons

Play-making God. Needs experience to capitalize on his potential.
Not really useful if hes behind.
Gods with roots and Silences are his nightmare for engaging. E.g. Sylvanaus, Nox, Hades, etc.
Not a carry
Does not have a proper laugh :( . F**k Fenrir :)

Matchups

DISCLAIMER: These are all based on God matchups. I will mention if it is a skill matchup or not before I dwell into the details.

Warriors

Amaterasu

My Personal Experience.

This is not really a skill matchup. Amaterasu has one of the crowd control with counters Tyr's combo but the honest truth is that this is a relatively easy lane.
You will out-clear her almost everytime during the laning phase. She has a stronger team fight than you do with that 2 sec stun but do not let that ruin your day.
You have way more lock-down and overall damage than her for most of the game. Pick up a Runeforged/Jotunn's in this matchup for the lane.
Only tips I can give you is back off when she applies her 3 stack passive on you, because that shield will hit like a truck if you dont try to avioid it and if you see her use her dash on you or the wave, combo that Japanese samurai back into her next year and smash her mirror.

Difficulty 4/10

Bellona

My Personal Experience

Now this is a skill matchup. A really good Bellona will try and make sure your Fearless is down before she approaches the wave. This is because your Fearless can ruin her whole clear in the lane if you manage to hit her while clearing simultaneously. Be weary of her Bludgeon damage during the lane, as it tends to hit like a truck when she hits a single target. Its a relatively hard lane if you are new to Tyr, but relatively calm if you are confident with him mechanically. Downside is she has more damage than you the longer the game progresses.

DIFFICULTY = 7.5/10

Chaac

My Personal Experience

This is a farm lane. Nothing more, noting less. If he tries to fight you, just Fearless-Power Cleave him to next year. You have more kill potential, a better late and more crowd control than he has. Can be a pest to teammates if he gets ahead so try to not let this happen.

DIFFICULTY = 4/10

Guan Yu

My Personal Experience

This is not a skill matchup. Guan Yu has a natural advantage against you just because his Taolu Assault makes him immune to knockbacks. So he has no problem clearling the lane against you. Try to play safe and clear minions before they come under the tower. His ultimate is strong as well. His sustain is good as well. Only thing going for you really in this matchup is that you have more kill potential than he does pre-5. If you see a Guan Yu being picked, sway towards a more aggressive solo laner like Bellona or Ravana.

DIFFICULTY = 6.5/10

Hercules

My Personal Experience

Hercules is not really in the meta at the moment. But if you do face against him, it is a skill matchup. Both of you will be observing and waiting for the other to make a mistake and capitalize on it. He does have safer clear than you and your damage during the laning phase is somewhat equal. This really depends who gets ahead first. But never the less you have more lockdown potential.

DIFFICULTY 5/10

Odin

My Personal Experience

One in a hundred games you will face this guy in solo lane. He almost instaclears the lane for the first 6 mins of the game. Just try to avoid his damage while he clears and wait for him to use his combo before you approach the wave. He starts to fall off at lvl 8-9, this is your chance to capitalize on him. You have an easy escape vs. his ult, so just get out of that ring or you can use his ring against him and Fearless him into it.
Note: You cant heal in his rings so remember this when you decide to fight him.

DIFFICULTY = 3/10

Osiris

My Personal Experience

A relatively even matchup. You have better clear potential but he has more trade potential. He can also box way better than you and his Fragmented passive and his Judgement Tether makes him really durable during the laning phase. He also has a reliable escape. Just dodge his Spirit Flail before you approach the wave and be wary of his all in's.

DIFFICULTY= 4.5/10

Ravana

My Personal Experience

This guy when from the laughing stock of the SMITE Community to a absolute beast of a God. His laning phase and significantly improved because of this and this hinders Tyr a lot. He has safer clear than you do and his early trades hit like a truck because of his high power scalings. Even more dreadful is that he has one of the few crowd controls that ruin Tyr's exsistence. Try to play really safe in this matchup as one mistake can lead to almost certain death. Always wait out his 10-Hand Shadow Fist and Prana Onslaught Combo on the minions before you approach the wave.

DIFFICULTY = 8.5/10

Sun Wukong(SWK)

My Personal Experience

He has that insane clear with his Magic Cudgel and Master's Will combo. Try to avoid long trading sessions with him because you will almost come out behind. Wait for his combo before you approach the wave and be care of his Tiger stance in 72 Transformations. Also careful of his passive, Undefeated Body as he can get some lucky random critical strikes on you

DIFFICULTY = 5/10

Vamana

My Personal Experience

I have to be honest to say that I have not faced a Vamana in lane for almost 2 months. His laning phase is mediore and you should outclear him because he has no way to stop you during your Fearless. If he tries to all in you just Fearless or use your ultimate to get out and watch the baby cry as he settles for minions.

DIFFICULTY = 4/10

Honourable Mentions

Xing Tian

My Personal Experience

Tyr is one of the only gods right now that can deal with this beast in the solo lane, along with Hades, SWK, etc. This because Xing struggles in the early game because his clear is horrible. So you just clear the minions as soon as possible and leave him to the decision to either take archer damage or lose gold. You should not really be looking to fight him just because he has an easy escape and his HP5 is ridiculous. Hi-Rez please do somrthing about this guy.

DIFFICULTY = 6.5/10

Sol

My Personal Experience

Disapparate is everyone's nightmare when facing this ball of fire. If you manage to bait it out, then you can take advantage of this and punish her. Her clear is mediocre early because she still needs to land a lot of basics to clear it completely. But after a few items she can almost insta-clear the wave. Always go Warrior's into Runic shield as the passive on this item really affects her early clear and overall damage.

DIFFICULTY = 6.5/10

Nox

My Personal Experience

I will say this only once. DO NOT PICK TYR IF YOU KNOW THE ENEMY TEAM HAS ONE.
This god will make your life a living hell even if she is not solo. In team-fights she will deny you anything you want with her Shadow Lock and Siphon Darkness. She really is a natural counter to Tyr so avoid facing one at all costs. If you want to find out for yourself. Just try it. I dare you.

DIFFICULTY = 9.5/10

Note: I will not include most mages because it is really a rare occurrence to face one in solo. But you should have enough information to understand how to play Tyr in the laning phase from the previous match-ups.

Summary

Overall, Tyr is a well balanced God with a kit that is really game changing in the sense that locking down an important target for your team and really make the tides turn in a teamfight. If you enjoy versitile warriors with overall good damage and defence mechanics or you are the type of person who likes to make plays, the Tyr is the God for you.

Season 3 has not put Tyr in any spotlight nor is he not viable. I personally think hes in decent position for competitve and casual play.

This guide is really well put together. Expert formatting and good info.

Just one thing I noticed, In your gear section you seem to have made a typo... I think when you typed "compesition" you meant "composition"

Keep up the awesome work, fam!

Hello, I like your build and i know this is for season 2 but any insight on what to build for season 3? I've been on the PTS alot lately is why im asking.Your core build is still usable minus a few items and idk if that will effect the build as a whole because of it. Ill list the changes to the items first and list what i think might be appropriate.

Breastplate of Valor
Reduced Cooldown Reduction from 25% → 20%.

Jotunn’s Wrath
Reduced Cooldown Reduction from 25% → 20%.
Decreased Physical Penetration from 11 → 10.

^these two items are still viable picks I belive. You cap cdr,and have nice manna pool.

Stone of Gaia
Health increased from 100 → 350.
No longer provides Magical Protection.

Runeforged Hammer
Now branches off of Heavy Hammer.
No longer provides Physical Protection.
Now provides +30 Physical Power.
Reduced Health from 350 → 200.
Cost increased from 2050 → 2700.
New Passive: Your abilities now deal an additional 15% of your Physical power as Magical Damage against enemies, and 30% of your Physical Power as Magical Damage against Slowed or Rooted enemies.

^ These two are bad new's for alot of tanky warrior's. If your goal was to convert some of the protection from breast plate of valor and the bonus protection from guardian stance into power it doesnt work like that anymore with runeforged. Its an okay item still but the passive isnt all to useful. Stone of gaia is a weird item to replace because if you are just using it for the magical defense and not the regen then just pick another item;however, the regen is nice but no defense.

In terms of what to replace with those two items idk im still looking through all the changes myself.For Stone of Gaia i might just reccomend Genji’s Guard to get the same defense with a nice passive, or Pestilence . For Runeforged i might just say shifter shield it's not an amazing replacement (i do love shifter shield though <3) it more or less works the same.

Genji’s Guard
+80 Magical Protection, 20% Crowd Control Reduction, +20 MP5. Passive – Your HP5 is increased by +150%, and your movement speed by 20% for 5s upon taking Magical damage. Can only occur once every 30s. Cost 2600.

Pestilence
Decreased Health from 300 → 200.
Increase Magical Protection from 65 → 80.
and whatever passive this had

Shifter’s Shield
Increased base Magical and Physical Protections from 15 → 20.

passive is still the same just higher base stats

Once again i love your guide and you were well thought out just wondering for season 3 purpouses and if build changed if you tried the pts or read patch notes. Sorry for huge wall of text but yea. VVGL, and VVGF.

Hey Gambit2211, I love this review it is exactly what im looking for to get the important feedback I need. Bascially I have considered potential builds for Season 3 and are trying them on the PTS to see if they would be possible. Once the season rolls into the live servers, I will update the guild for the season. Again thank you for the review, it means a lot.

Gave this an upvote earlier but didn't comment. Really solid guide, like the build/skill order and the tips are great. As Bran said, spoilers/icons would help this guide a bit on the bbcoding end. You can also link your pictures with a url if you want as well for the god cards. eg:

Code:
[url=https://www.smitefire.com/smite/god/nox-59][img]http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/smite.gamepedia.com/1/17/T_Nox_Default_Card.png][/img][/url]

But yeah regardless great guide! +1

I second Cake on liking the matchups section. It takes a lot to scroll through it though, especially with the size of the pictures, so I might suggest using the BBCoding option of spoilers. Heard Zhong Kui is also a somewhat common solo pick, perhaps consider adding him there too?

Also, since you've got the pictures there, might as well make them functional. Suggest using the "icon" BBCoding option there. It would read like this:
Code:
[icon=Stone of Gaia size=100]

You would, of course, choose whatever size you prefer...and you can do this for all items as well as abilities.

Cake also points out your overcapped CDR, and would agree with switching out for Mail of Renewal (against a strong physical team) or balancing a bit more with something like Spirit Robe, since you already have physical protection in Runeforged Hammer.

And, welcome to SmiteFire!

Nice guide! Not sure if you realise but you overcap the 40% cooldown reduction limit with this build. Might be better to swap out Breastplate of Valor for Mail of Renewal?

I like the matchups section, really good info, but as a Nox player I can say it works both ways. Tyr is a nightmare for Nox too. Being out of position makes Nox either incredibly vulnerable or essentially useless, or both, and Tyr is all about putting people out of position. They're both very effective against each other.

Also you mention using Runic Shield against Sol, but it's not listed in your situational items. Might be worth slipping it in there.

Thank you so much for the feedback. The main reason I didn't Put so many items specially Runic Shield was simply because I wanted to leave some space for the player to actually think about what to buy in different scenarios and Runic Shield is exclusive for Sol, you have no reason to build this in any other match ups. Gaia will help you better against most mages anyway. Ill definately edit the core items segment in no time. Again, thank you for the feedback.
