Finally, HE GOT BUFFED!!! The recent buff increased his slow on Warriors Will by 10% and his passive will also stack when you hit foes. These buffs are GREAT!!! Still, they prove that to play Guan Yu you must rely on his kit to bring you to victory. This guide is more hypothetical than anything and is made to get you thinking about how one can play Guan Yu in a new way.
For those new to the game the solo lane is the short lane on the map where you will most likely fight 1v1 with another player. This solo build is very flexible and you may have to purchase items out of order ti make it the most effective. That said I am going to just talk about the items themselves and when you will want to use them.
First of all in the starter items section of this build there are items adding up to a total of 1200 gold. Chose a 1st tier active to complete this section.
Warrior Tabi and Runeforged Hammer are under my "get immediately category". In almost any situation you will want these to start.
Spirit Robe is best used against foes with good CC. However if your foe does not have high CC this would be a good time to get one of the items from the "pick one" category. This is because you always want early game cool down reduction with Guan Yu.
Shifters Shield is a very versatile item because of its passive. While it is a defensive item in this build a lot of people don't realize how much power it gives you if you're over 50% health. It gives you 60 power. That's more than Deathbringer. Use this item if you want some defense but think your not doing enough damage as well.
Titans Bane Chances are that a solo laner will have a relatively tanky build so extra pen can always be of use.
Jotunn's Wrath or Breastplate of Valor? The choice is basically yours. The first adds penetration and some power. The second adds a lot of mana and physical defense.
I would personally say that support is Guan Yu's best Conquest role but don't take my word for it I play everyone support. The support role is much more defined with Guan Yu. You always want Talaria Boots for the gold bonus and Witchblade to weaken their ADC's damage. In the rare case of a magical ADC get Runic Sheild instead of Witchblade. GET BREASTPLATE OF VALOR FOR MANA!!! After that get his defensive items to help your ADC. His utility items are something that you should judge for yourself. The best way to chose is to ask yourself what you don't need. If you don't need sustain and you ADC is fine on protections don't get Soul Eater. If you don't need healing reduction don't get Pestilence. If neither you or your ADC need more penetration (PEN) don't get Void Shield. All I have to say about actives in this category is GET Wrath of the Gods for objective secure.
Generally, in arena you want to play really tanky with Guan Yu. His mobility is a huge asset and his ability to steal protections is invaluable. However, in arena it is important to make sure you can get out when necessary. Having reasonable auto attacks in this game mode allows you to use your mobility more as an initiation and escape than a main damage source. Also remember that in arena you should use Cavalry Charge for the stun rather than high damage. Be sure to cancel it early if you are in a position to stun a large number of enemies.
Healing allies with Conviction or hitting enemies with Warriors Will will reduce your cool downs by 2 seconds each. Use this in group fights to spam your abilities.
Taolu Assault steals protections from your enemies. This will give you up to 30 extra protections for the duration and reduce your foes protections by the same amount. Protections stolen maxes out at 1 second.
Cancel Taolu Assault after 1 second and follow up with Warriors Will for maximum damage.
Both Cavalry Charge and Warriors Will slow your foes.
Canceling Calvalry Charge early will instantly initiate the stun. Use this while chasing.
Your passive will increase the healing from Conviction based on how many hits you've taken. This will double your healing at 20 hits. This means any hit INCLUDING MINIONS AND JUNGLE CAMPS. Pulling agro on minions late game will allow you to heal more, faster.
Attack speed effects his Cavalry Charge but it cannot crit.

My opinion (solo build):
ACTIVES
Take out HOG, being able to clear half the wave every 60 sec is not worth 900g and a active slot IMO. It is still good for gf/FG and buff invades, but there are more useful actives for both you and your team. FOG is not worth it either imo (unless you are going to 100-0 someone during the stun).
Would like to see heavenly and TP in adittion to shield and curse.
ITEMS
Bluestone is fine imo as a general build, but would prefer to see Mystical or Gaia tier 2 depending on matchup (but it is mainly personal preference).
Warrior Tabi ofc. Runeforged is good, not sure if I would rush it (unless you got Mystical), but I don't play enough bruisers to speak to loudly on the issue.
Spirit robe is OP as **** on everyone so why not? Would like to see it as situational spirit robe against hard cc teams, Winged blade against teams with slows and a luxury item against teams with neither (maybe MM here or something else).
I keep forgetting how good shifter's really is, but you got other items with more utility (MM, witch blade, jotunn's). But again I don't have enough experience to really give a evidence based opinion.
Titan's is a bit questionable IMO, it is good ofc. But I would prefer to see more sustain because you are a frontliner after all. MM is OP ;) or some magical prot. But again it's personal preference IMO,
Jotunn's is good (better early ofc) don't really like Breastplate. Qin's, frostbound, witch blade etc etc are good at least if you got the AS from Winged blade.
But over all I like the build, not a fan of boots 1 start though AT ALL 6% movement speed? Ewww... would prefer more pots, an active or wards (to give mid a heads up on when jungle rotates from blue).
SKILLS
Don't really see the point in maxing the ult, at least not before you got 2 and 3 maxed. At least save a point a lvl 8 to get 3 maxed at lvl 9.
GENERAL THOUGHTS
It's a short and easy to read guide, Maybe add some situational items and explain when and why you would pick them up etc. I would not lift an eyebrow if I had someone going this build in my games (except from HOG).
Thanks for the advice. Yeah I realize my solo could use some help. I play mainly tanks and supports so I normally build a bit off for solo.

Solid guide, ****py character as you noted. Don't worry, Hi-Rez will eventually tell Bellona to give some of her power to Guan Yu ... maybe
In regards to build: Witchblade can be a decent item, but Guan Yu doesn't benefit much from the attack speed. I'd only recommend it if you're soloing against an AA god like a hunter or Osiris, Ravana, etc. Even then, you could do a Mystical Mail rush or grab Runeforged Hammer to much the same effect. For support Guan Yu this is a much better item since you're focusing the enemy adc much of the time.
I agree with your use of Bluestone Pendant. This is not a useless starter item, it's a balanced one. Guan Yu is probably one of the most mana hungry warriors and he doesn't use basic attacks as often clearing mostly with Taolu Assault. This makes Death's Toll less desirable and Bluestone Pendant more so.
While I don't agree that Wrath of the Gods is a useless item (it's far from it, it's still a fantastic objective finisher), I'd probably grab Shielded Teleport for guan in the solo lane. It helps Guan Yu's mana problems a lot and helps you rotate to other lanes leaving you less time on solo island.
Finally I would advise against Brawler's Beat Stick since you can just grab Weakening Curse instead. Generally I find shield of regrowth to be great for filling an early item space on Guan Yu since it makes you more mobile and gives great stats for its price.
As for support guan... don't get meditation. I know he has mana problems, but this is not the answer. Worst case scenario, grab Breastplate of Valor first item and move on from there. Wrath of the Gods can be a decent support pickup, but I'd only grab it if your team lacks an ultimate to guarantee objectives like Release The Kraken! or Circle of Protection. Otherwise some desirable actives would be Weakening Curse, Greater Blink, Shell of Absorption, etc.
I would also personally advise against getting Soul Eater solely because Guan Yu has a heal and he doesn't benefit much from the lifesteal since physical lifesteal only affects your basic attacks. I'd probably grab magi's blessing instead so you're not shut down by enemy CC.
Finally for arena, I wouldn't recommend going full AA as others have said. Generally the best auto-attack item on Guan Yu is Qin's Sais since he has built in penetration on his Taolu Assault and because he doesn't need base power since its passive deals all the damage.
Hope this helps, I personally love Guan Yu. I always do great with him! (I think my casual conquest k/d with him is like 2.5 :3
*just for reference my personal unpublished conquest build for him is here
@WalrusLyfe
This guys has a great sense of build, I don't understand why there are so many haters hating this guide. THIS GUIDE IS ALMOST THE BEST I'VE READ!!!! GOD! Walrus, you're the immature child here.
Yours Sincerely, Jeeyeung.
This isn't a great guide. There are many better builds for a solo bruiser. Also lookt how I replied and look at how you and your buddy replied. You were way more immature. And if you want to cause an argument at least back up your statement which you evidently cant do as all you want to do is reply like a child.
