Athena is one of the best guardians in the game! Not only that but she is very easy to master. Her skills are basic enough for beginners to understand how to use her, yet complex enough for experts to use without feeling limited.
She was the first guardian I picked up and now is my main god. My record with her isn't too well, but has gotten better after I changed my build to this. Have fun playing Athena!
You want to begin with Watcher's Gift because it, in my opinion, is the best beginner item for tanks. The MP5 and HP5 are very good at the beginning of the match.
Shoes of Focus instead of Reinforced because of the nerf to Reinforced. The cooldown plus mana will help you stay in lane for longer.
Breastplate of Valor for the mana and cooldown. The physical protections are just an added bonus.
Hide of the Urchin is one of the best tank items. The stacking helps you survive and stay in lane.
Ethereal Staff for the health and mana. The power isn't what you are looking for. It is more for the other stats, with the power being something that will just help your poke. This should be the first item you replace to start counter building.
Bulwark of Hope is a great item for the CC reduction, health, and magical protection. It has a pretty good passive that helps during team fights.
Genji's Guard rounds off the build. It maxes your CDR and some more MP5. You will replace Watcher's Gift with this item.
You need to pick up Bumba's Mask if you are going to jungle. It's the only jungle oriented starter item.
Next, you are going to want to build into Dynasty Plate Helm. It will give you beginning stats that you would need to deal strong early damage.
Shoes of the Magi will help you deal even more early damage, while giving you the movement speed any boot would give. You can switch this out for Shoes of Focus, because you are mana hungry early game.
Breastplate of Valor will give you the mana you will need along with the CDR that will help you clear camps faster. This along with Spirit Robe are the main reasons why I choose to use Shoes of the Magi.
Spirit Robe will give you some CCR, CDR, and protections. They all help while rotating and team fights.
Obsidian Shard is good item to break through any protections of the god or gods that you are ganking.
Rod of Tahuti will replace Bumba's Mask, giving a lot of power and some MP5 to help make sure that you have mana for your abilities during team fights.
Spear of Desolation for the pen and power. You replace Dynasty Plate Helm for this item as they provide most of the same stats but while Dynasty Plate Helm is an early game item, Spear of Desolation is one of the best late game items.
Passive: Reach- a very good passive that gives you good poke after using an ability.
#1: Preemptive Strike- one of the best dashes in the game as it lets you get away, like a regular dash. But if it hits a target, it will damage and slow them.
#2: Confound- One of the best CC's in the game! Sure this may not seem like a lot at first, but it is better than Ymir's freeze! For beginners and experts, Ymir's freeze is one of the most annoying things to deal with in the game. But Ymir's freeze keeps you in one spot... Athena's taunt takes control of your character and makes them follow her for two seconds, when maxed.
#3: Shield Wall- one of the best damaging abilities on a tank. It deals damage when you set it down and two seconds later, it explodes, dealing even more damage! Two seconds, huh? Well I can just run away from it and, possibly, only take the initial brunt of damage. Well, you are going to want to rethink that strategy, because Athena can just use her taunt and raw you into the area and force you to take the damage.
#4: Defender of Olympus- in my opinion, the best ultimate for a guardian. It is a global ultimate. For beginners, this means that Athena can travel around the map. Not only is it a global ultimate, she must target an ally. Now you may think that this wouldn't do anything but, the targeted ally gets a 20% damage mitigation while Athena charges up the jump to their location. When Athena lands, she does damage in a small circle around her.
Pros:
Overall, Athena is one of the best guardians in the game. She has amazing potential in both the jungle and duo lane. She is one of the easiest gods to master. I hope that you guys use this build the next time you play Athena!
