This build for Ares is meant for players not worried about getting kills, but instead more focused on helping the team as a whole. This build only shows final items needed to complete the build.
THIS BUILD IS ONLY FOR PLAYERS LOOKING TO PLAY A BULKY SUPPORT ROLE.
Side note: I have had some success running this build in Arena, but I would suggest grabbing something to boost your speed if you need to fall back.
This build for Ares is mainly focused on building his defenses for lane sustain while also taking advantage of his passive to also get a damage buff. Every item minus the Ethereal staff grants an aura effect, giving Ares +30 magic damage per item. While the first four items will mainly focus on building your defenses and health to maximize sustain and bolster your team's HPS and MPS the last two items are meant to round out Ares in damage, making him have a very strong late game presence. Depending on the enemy team, the items after the actives will help to replace one physical or magical defensive item to fit the situation without losing the power buff from Ares passive.
While it would make sense for this build to focus on Ares' bolster defense skill, that skill will be the last thing you put skill points in. For example, it would help you with sustain and let your teammates take more hits, maxing out searing flesh and shackles first will keep you as a threat early on even with your lower magical damage. Shackles will slow down enemies trying to get away for you or your teammates to get the kill, while searing flesh will not only make opponents think twice about rushing you, it will help keep them off of your teammates. using Ares' ult in conjunction with searing flesh will also do massive damage to your opponents, either securing kills for yourself, or lowering health enough for teammates to clean up
Pros
This build is great for players not focused on getting kills, but driven by making the team stronger while also doing as much as you can to keep the momentum in your teams favor. If getting high assist numbers and being a team player is your thing, this build is for you.

No boots? or any speed item? Couldn't this backfire badly?
I run this build all the time, the only time speed gets you killed is when you are trying to 1 v 3 the whole opposing team without the threat of a tower or phoenix to fall back on. Because it's more focused on taking damage and letting your team do damage and aura boosting while you play cc/clean up/tank, when you need heal you can fall back without a problem.
I do tend to get a low amount of kills using this build because you don't do much damage until late game, but with all the defense you get early on, you tend to survive most battles especially if your team build for more damage and speed.
I guess my only warning to players using this build is that if you are going to use it,you will be playing a support role with a low damage output until late game. I will also add that into the intro for the build so that people don't have to come all the way down here for them to figure that out.
