Introduction

Hi everyone!
My IGN name is Aramey, I've been playing Smite for a year now, maining Arena mode and Bastet since the first day. I've played there over 1200 matches (250+ on Bastet with 60% winrate) and scoring on her my first quadrakill.

I'm from EU region, almost not touching Conquest and leagues, not streaming, not doing Youtube videos, but if you want to see some ****py fanarts check out my deviantArt page.

My stats for February 2016:

Pros and Cons

PROS:
- Probably safest assassin for Arena
- Great poke and ability damage potential
- Easy to learn
- Only Declaw requires some aiming

CONS:
- Mana-hungry early game
- Has no hard CC and no CC immunity
- Is squishy and has no sustain abilities
- Cat Call falls off late game

In my opinion Bastet is one of the best assassins to be played in Arena. Also easy to learn - there's nothing too complicated in her kit. She's the only god in game that can get in and out of fight using a single ability. In early game she can poke mages for 1/2 HP (expierienced it on my own skin too) and force them to recall with a simple Pounce + Razor Whip combo even before finishing Jotunn's Wrath. The 2 cons I mentioned (being mana-hungry and squishy) are not that bad, since you can back to base in few seconds. She can contribute to teamfight only with damage and slows, so her kills are usually considered as KS even if you're top damage player (Cats or bleed lasthitting someone while you're far away or someone dieing from a single Pounce). Overall Bastet is rather easy to learn, safe to play, has great poke damage, but doesn't have that lategame hypercarry potential and at the end of match you might fall from a perfect 7/0 score to 7/5 if you're not careful.

Abilities

Open Wound Open Wound ( Passive )
Simple just as the description says - if someone gets hit by your ability they get 15% more damage from your next ability. This doesn't work with Cat Call. This passive is one of reasons why Bastet is pure ability-based assassin and why she needs mana so badly. Abuse it to the maximum, spam double ability combos and poke enemies as much as you can.

Pounce ( 1 )
That part is gonna be a bit chaotic to read. Pounce is rather unique ability and Bastet's signature move, there's a lot I can write about using it. In my opinion this is the best (as well as most annoying) leap attack in the game. Some people might be wondering why I level this up before Declaw - from my personal expierience I think it's better poke ability than Declaw, it has slightly higher damage and way bigger AoE radius. It's not just an escape or just an initiate - it's BOTH. Always remember about this. It allows you to go aggresive, harass the whole enemy team and get away safely.

4 Seconds! After using Pounce you get a speed buff for 4 seconds and the ability to click Pounce again to jump back to your previous location. There's a clock with a paw indicating how much time you have left to Pounce back (both teams can see this icon). Don't overdue it, you might get CCed in the middle of it and not be able to escape in time.

Speaking of CCs... Bastet is really vulnerable to heavy CCs. Jumping into enemy team that has these without buying Purification or Magi's Blessing might be a suicide.
This ability can be easyly broken. (For more info read : Return Pounce and its reactions to CCs)
Avoid jumping close to gods that have AoE stuns like Apollo or Kumbhakarna. If you're facing enemies that can cast a CC in a line like Anubis or Scylla try to get in range to leap BEHIND them. Pounce will still do the damage, they will most likely waste their CC ability thinking that you'll land in front of them, it will confuse them and they'll have to turn away from the rest of your team which might use this situation to attack. Pounce might also be disrupted for example when you're pulled by Awilix' Gravity Surge. I feel like you're still able to Pounce back if she pulled you on the initial jump. It's a bit messy.
Don't start your Pounce too deep on enemy side! Always be wary of your surroundings. Expierienced players will often ignore you and focus on setting traps in the place you jumped from (like Artemis putting cripples, mages setting damage circles or Odin waiting to set the ring). Look at your minimap before jumping back to see if enemies are chasing you or waiting for your return Pounce.

Razor Whip ( 2 )
This will be your main damaging ability as well as wave clear. Always try to use this as a second ability after Pounce or Declaw to get the extra damage on enemies from Open Wound passive. Get Razor Whip to Level 2 at the start, you'll clear camps faster and level up right after that to get Declaw. Nothing really special to describe this ability - it's a 4-tick bleed that's rather easy to land. Pounce + Razor Whip + Pounce back is my most used combo to poke.

Declaw Declaw ( 3 )
It's the only ability in Bastet's kit that requires actual aim. I level this up last, it's a situational ability for me, probably way more useful for chases in Conquest's jungle, not so much in the Arena which is a nonstop teamfight field. I usually use it to snipe out enemies that are out of Razor Whip's range or to slow them for my teammates or cats to secure the kill.
Note: Some people might forget that Declaw is not a single target ability, it hits the target AND creates a small AoE around it in similar way to Kukulkan's Zephyr or Freya's Pulse

Cat Call Cat Call ( 4 )
This is not the greatest ultimate in Arena where enemies usually have their teammates to help them survive, Improved Sprint not even needed. Late game cats can be killed with 1 strong AoE or even help the enemy team (once Thanatos healed from my cats and proceeded to kill me...). Early and midgame are a different story. Cat Call can be used to finish off enemies, slow them down for your teammates, block them next to walls or even initiate teamfight as they spread panic on the battlefield. You can also use them defensively to block enemies chasing you and use the cats as a shield against basic attacks.
Note: Cats prioritize bleeding targets ( Razor Whip). Don't yell at them when they attack wrong person, they're a bit dumb sometimes.

Items

MY CORE ITEMS:
Warrior Tabi (1550)
The main stats that Bastet needs are Physical Power, Physical Penetration and Cooldown Reduction. Since boots were changed in Season 2 and Ninja Tabi lost the 15% CDR, Warrior Tabi is the only right choice.

Jotunn's Wrath (2440)
This is Bastet's bread and butter - it has all the stats that she needs - power, penetration, mana and CDR. Buy it as a second item most of the time, it's pretty standard and solid start.

Brawler's Beat Stick (2400)
Since its passive was changed to work with abilities rather than basic attacks it should be renamed to Bastet's Beat Stick. It has lot of power, flat penetration and 40% heal reduction from passive. It makes Bastet's abilities hit like a truck. The passive is useful if enemies don't have healing abilities, because it also reduces healing received from the fountain, so that makes them stay in base longer.

Void Shield (2600)
This item is actually pretty similar to the mace tree. It provides power, protections and strips 20 protections from the enemies nearly - so it works like extra penetration, but not only for you, but your whole team which is pretty handy on Arena. Remember that if you get too far from the enemy they will get their 20 protections back making the bleed, cats and max-range Declaw deal less damage.

Shifter's Shield (2400)
It got cheaper even than Void Shield in recent patch. I'm a fan of hybrid items, if gives you lot of power or protections depending on your Health. I usually buy it later on as 5th or 6th item.

Titan's Bane (2050)
Pretty cheap item, more penetration is always welcome on Bastet. It's more helpful on tanky enemies. If the enemy team went full damage, maybe it's a better idea to not buy this item at all and take a defensive/hybrid item instead. If the enemy is really tanky, for example 2 guardians + warrior and you feel safe enough rush it as 4th item.

SITUATIONAL ITEMS:

Winged Blade (1850)
It can save your life from many cripples that let you move, but prevent Pounce like Poseidon's Whirlpool, Ares' Shackles or Cupid's Fields Of Love. It can be also used offensively to chase enemies trying to slow you down like He Bo using Atlas of the Yellow River or Ah Puch spamming the whole map with Gem of Isolation's passive.

Magi's Blessing Magi's Blessing (2350)
Due to the amount of new gods that get free CC to poke you (like Skadi's Permafrost or Jing Wei's Persistent Gust) I moved this item to situationals. There's really not many situation where Magi's really pays off these days. It has only one good use - the CC immunity, noone builds it for the stats, they're sh!t.
As I said in Pounce description - Bastet is really vulnerable to hard CCs so the immunity is pretty nice. Though I think it might be a waste of gold if you face gods like Nox, Geb, Isis or Sobek who can easyly break that passive by poking you with their AoE CCs. For others like Ares it might be essential item to survive.

Runic Shield (2250)
I find this item to be quiet broken right now. It's an equivalent of Void Shield against magical gods, but it's much cheaper and has a stronger aura. Enemies get Magical Power reduced by 50 and Attack Speed by 20%. Counting that Arena team comp usually has a guardian, 2 mages and some hunter - you're practically neutralizing their 2 full items. This aura is a nightmare to magical ADCs like Freya, Chronos or Sol

RELICS:
Curse Curse
Slows and reduces healing of all enemies in it's radius. It slowly starts to be my first core relic, as I'm feel more aggressive and ballsy this season trying to overcompensate Purification nerfs. Curse will help you catch up to enemies, stick your cats to them, maybe even slap some basic attacks and with the Brawler's Beat Stick in your build they're unable to heal at all.
Purification Purification
It got nerfed to death this season. Now it has a muuuch longer cooldown of 160s and no longer reduces cooldowns of your abilities. The only good thing is that it doesn't cost gold anymore. From a core relic it starts to become my situational pick against gods like Ares or Awilix.
Sanctuary Sanctuary
I use it mostly against few ultimates like Neith's World Weaver, Nu Wa's Fire Shards, but there's a lot of new gods with annoying poke damage these days like Chiron, Sol or Raijin. I usually pick it up as second relic.

I'm also testing some agressive relics like Frenzy or Sunder.

OTHER MENTIONS

These are mostly the items that I don't use that much anymore or I haven't tested them enough.
Hydra's Lament (2150)
The name fits this item really well now, it got nerfed hard in Season 2 - lost 20 power and the passive got halved. I found Hydra's Demise on Smitefire that shows the previous stats. I'm honestly including this item, because it's cheap and Arena matches rarely end with full 6-item builds. Since Jotunn's Wrath lost 5% CD reduction Hydra might be useful if you try to build more CDR, which is totally fine on Bastet, especially for her passive.

Transcendence (2600)
Some people might not like this choice due to higher price and building stacks, especially on Arena. I used it commonly in Season 2, because Bastet lacks mana sustain. It was a nice item, but I think new Brawler's Beat Stick is just better. It makes Bastet stronger midgame when it's really her time to shine. The loss of MP5 and extra mana doesn't hurt that much when the base is next to you.

Masamune(2200)
I'm mentioning this item, because of the 20 power buff it received. I called it the most interesting katana item at the beginning of Season 3 and now it might actually be pretty viable on Bastet. It's pretty cheap for 50 power, more movement speed and a passive that can add damage to all your abilities (that includes cats, I tested it).

I haven't played much with Mantle of Discord and Bulwark of Hope on Bastet and I'm not a big fan of building full defensive items, but the passives are really strong and can save your life, if not also help you kill the enemy.

Counter-plays

Overall Bastet is good against no mobility gods and melees that rely heavyly on their basic attacks, but problematic against high mobility targets, heals/shields and hard CC gods. Just few examples I found interesting.

Awilix
Let's counter the counter. Awilix's ultimate Gravity Surge was made to shut down gods with leap abilities and Bastet's Pounce has 2 leaps. You might not be able to pop Purification in time, unless you predict her ult and think "Remember of Awilix, remember of Awilix!" everytime you leap, that's bit risky. I recommend buying Magi's Blessing earlier as 4th item, maybe even 3rd item if Awilix focuses you hard. Remember that her Feather Step and Moonlight Charge can wear off Magi's Blessing's passive - try to move away from her melee range and don't turn your back. Engage only when her Summon Suku is down and remember she's immune to damage when she flips over someone with Feather Step.

Bakasura
Bakasura's usual strategy is to jump in wasting Take Down, then spit Regurgitate on the enemies to cripple them and then go crazy with buffed basic attacks. If you have Winged Blade or Purification Beads up you can escape, if you don't - don't run away, but fight back. You would die anyway, so why not try to turn the hunter into prey? First use Cat Call to protect yourself, then use Declaw to activate Open Wound passive and follow it up with Razor Whip. Baka's Eat minions does not work on the kitties. After the cripple wears off finish him with Pounce.

Thanatos
When you're low on health and Thanatos is using Hovering Death you have a moment to Pounce away when you hear his scream right before landing. If your Pounce is on cooldown you can lower it by 3 seconds using Greater Purification. If it's more than 3s all you have left is juking. Using Cat Call mid/lategame might turn against you. A good Thanatos will use your cats to heal himself with Death Scythe and Harvester of Souls passive. That's where Curse might be very useful.

Medusa
If you want to initiate a fight try landing Pounce behind Medusa. All her abilities are hard to aim, that way she might miss them and if you're lucky she will Lacerate right into you and waste her escape. Running away from her is a bit more tricky. If you use Cat Call for defence the cats will block Viper Shots, but won't block Lacerate and Medusa can explode Acid Spray on them. Remember about that.

Decided to try out Bastet, and I'm really glad I followed this guide! It's really useful, and I actually got 15 kills with 0 deaths. Ah, this is really great! Thank you for taking the time to make this. Arena for the win! //I'd actually like to try her out in Conquest, but I'll probably try to get more used to her first. :P

I'm glad to see that someone else doesn't do conquest all that often. I find it rather boring to be honest and it just takes too long.
Anyways, I like your guide. It has given me some ideas for not only bastet but other gods as well.

Could this work jungle?

Aramey (1) | April 17, 2016 1:50am
It is, maybe not as essential as with the healers, but still annoying as hell. The passive affects the healing from the fountain, which means people you poked must waste few extra seconds to sit in base. I guess you can buy Transcendence instead of it, but I don't like to fight for the stacks with other people.

I like the build, but is it reliable to get Brawler's Beat Stick with no healers? <3

@DeathByDribbling I think the best solution against this teamcomp is to click Alt + F4.

But seriously, this is probably the worst hard-counter team comp (even more cancerous if that damage mage is a Poseidon...). I don't think the build will really matter if you get caught. You might survive if you use some defensive items like Spirit Robe or Mail of Renewal, but you'll be rather useless then since Bastet's only strong point on Arena is the damage. I'd just go with my regular build with maybe 1 hybrid/defensive item like Shifter's Shield or Runic Shield. Positioning will be more important. If that team is hugging each other you'd better just sit back and play the minion game. If you jump in you might get CC-locked and even if you manage to land some damage there's Khepri with shield and revive waiting. Wait for them to split up, waste their CCs or focus your other teammates. Prioritize the most squishy target (like mage without escape) or someone who's lazy-backing while ignoring guardians. As for actives I always buy full beads + aegis against Ares. I always split up against him and look at his position. I try to counter his ult with aegis to save my beads for other CCs or the next ult. When both are on cooldown I play supersafe. That's really costly, but hopefully with the free trinkets in Season 3 Bastet will have easier life against CCs, at least cheaper.

DeathByDribbling (1) | January 12, 2016 4:06am
The problem with Bastet in arena is she is very vulnerable to hard CC. Hence all your builds above basically work when they don't have a lot of hard CC - i.e. you are facing hunters + warriors mostly. Then she is almost op and easy to play - you just build lots of cooldown, power and pen. Personally I'd build more pen then you do (warrior+jotans+titans+brawers at least, and some combo of asi/hide/magi's/crusher) but it doesn't matter much. Jump in and out to your hearts content doing lots of damage and making lots of kills.

However that all falls apart if the team has lots of hard CC in which case you are in big trouble. Even with magi's + beads you'll spend the whole game creeping around the edges not able to do much as the moment you jump in you're dead. Yesterday I faced nox + ares + kepri + hunter + damage mage. Give me a build that works vs that?

@Branmuffin17 That's why the experimental build IS experimental. It wasn't very effective for me either lately, makes the early game really weak. I think I'll just remove it and stick to the classic Warrior Tabi -> Jotunn's Wrath -> Transcendence order.

About the Shifter's Shield alternatives: If you want pure offense you can replace it with Brawler's Beat Stick, if you want something defensive, but cheaper I'm a big fan of Runic Shield at the moment.

I'll edit the guide and add some BBcodes after HiRez shows new patch notes.

Dude, I played Bastet a couple of days ago, and got pretty wrecked! I need some practice, and I think the matchup wasn't great for me either.

I used the experimental build sequence, but got Titan's Bane before Shifter's Shield. With Transcendence 2nd, it felt like it took FOREVER before I was able to finally build it. I think I'd be more comfortable with Jotunn's Wrath 2nd, as per your original build...more trips back, but more spamming of Pounce and Razor Whip.

Do you see any potentially better items than Shifter's Shield? For the price, it just doesn't feel like it's worth what it brings...

Anyway, I'll keep trying.

Hi Aramey,

Good guide. Just a bit hard to read because everything looks a bit lumped together. Would you consider adding a bit more BB coding to space things out and emphasize things more and less? Maybe use spoilers a bit?

I need to try Bastet in Arena...I never get Transcendence but it makes sense for her.

Also forgot that her Declaw hits a bit of an AOE, nice pointing that out.

I would usually default to an earlier Titan's Bane (like 4th item), before an item like Shifter's Shield, because of the cost difference and the penetration, which should still be pretty effective against all enemies (though of course more against tankier gods, as you mentioned). Brawler's Beat Stick is an interesting 4th in some situations...I've always loved that item, and the flat 20 pen might be more effective in the earlier game against squishy gods.

Anyway, will try this out soon! Upvote.
