Introduction

Hey there! My name is Darkscare_13 and my GamerTag is (appropriately) Darkscare13. I use the same name for every game, original me. I'm pretty new to Smite, only started in January, and I got pretty hooked due to my friend. I hope you enjoy and get lots of knowledge from reading this!

(P.S - This is going to be a long text guide without many visuals. I'll keep the visuals up, but don't expect a lot. I'll provide a TL:DR summary after the text long chapters, but to gain the full information, please read the entire chapter word for word.)

Now, my favorite god so far has been Ao Kuang. I've gotten pretty far enough that I got the tempest skin and rank 10 with the diamond skin.

I'm pretty new to this guide making, and I don't have enough free time to code, so iĺl just keep the minimum barebones text till I learn more. Sorry for no fancy images and stuff. (Nevermind, will update when I have freetime)

Now this build is pretty questionable, but it's gotten me through many games with a 2:1 KDR at least. Ao Kuang has been debuffed in the latest patch, but he still does a tremendous amount of damage. I've looked over other guides on Ao Kuang, but I feel that they focus too much on power. With this build, you have more than enough power to kill an enemy. You don't need to kill them twice over. I feel like the only power you need are the Shoes of the Magi, Demonic Grip, and Telkhines Ring, everything else should be focused on other things. With this build, I've done that thinking for you.

I highly recommend building in order as the item before usually compliments the ones after, I'll explain that in the equipment section.

Proof

Ao Kuang Summary

Ao Kuang is a great mage/assassin, who, if fed, can actually hypercarry the team. The only problem is that he's hard to use at the first time, but with practice, you can actually get no deaths and many, many kills. The greatest thing to remember is to NOT be greedy, unless you have a sure chance that you'll get out of there alive, that gets you killed most of the time.

Ao Kuang heavily relies on his combo, and should always attack with the recommended combo (See below). He excels at taking down tanks with his burst damage and ultimate, King of the Eastern Seas. He fails at taking too much damage though, as he is very squishy, but what assassin isn't? He is very susceptible to any type of CC or stun and will die easily without backup.

Ao Kuang's kit can escape, grant invisibility, execute, and slow. It's no problem to fight 1v1, but be aware of the enemies kit.

Pros/Cons

Pros:
-Very high burst damage.
-Very maneuverable/mobile
-Has an execution
- Water Illusion ability can vary from using to engage, intimidate, or escape.
-Ultimate can easily double, triple, quadra or even penta kill.
-Easily cleans up fights.
-Win most 1v1 fights unless stunned
-Not everybody uses him
-Solid Waveclear ( Wild Storm)
-Good all around the entire game except early game
-Balanced as can be
Cons:
-Very Squishy, only above Ne Zha
-Iffy in team fights
-Most targeted
-First banned in Leagues
-You WILL get hate for not playing him right
-Hard to use/get used to
-Relies heavily on both basic and ability attacks
-If stunned, easily killed
-Can easily mess up combo and have the tides be turned against himself
-Poor early game
-Kill steals like no tomorrow

Skill Sequence

My sequence in any and all game really varies and depends on how much I mess up by putting the wrong point into another skill (Gets annoying a lot).

(Note that I'm not showing the actual button presses 1-2-3-4, but which ability you should level first as a priority.)

Passive - King's Sword
Let's first talk about the Ao Kuang's passive, King's Sword. It has 3 charges and each charge, if used with an ability grants 5% more damage with only a 5 second recharge once out of battle. The passive also substitutes for mana when you are out. This could be a game breaker, so remember that in the heat of battle. This is a great significant buff, and should be used with utmost impunity.

Ability 1 - Dragon Call
You typically start off with Dragon Call, it'll give you a ranged attack and nobody wants to mess with a guy with dragons floating around him. It'll also help you get your speed buff and help your solo get his mana buff. This counts as a basic attack, and should be used for melee attacks, and not the ranged attack. By pressing two again, the dragons can be launched out as a ranged attack, slowing down the first god hit. Be aware that this can also be body blocked by minions. The ranged attack slows, but not by a significant amount. Shoot on your own terms, not on your own risk. You should max this SECOND

Ability 2 - Water Illusion
You should then get the Water Illusion, for your escape, not much to say about this except don't upgrade it at all. You're not going to use this for attack, at least I hope not. It does better late game (Tons of damage if you land it), when people finally realize you're squishy and chase you (and walk through your illusion) rather than somebody else. You should max this LAST

Ability 3 - Wild Storm
Your main attack will ALWAYS be Wild Storm, great poke damage and great wave clear, and it only takes 5 second to recharge without any CD equipment! The amount of damage it puts out is GODLIKE combined with Dragon Call. You should max this FIRST

King of the Eastern Seas
*Jaws theme*
You have an X marked on your body! Oh no, there's an Ao Kuang nearby! ****!
"You have been slain" Goes the Announcer
"Kneel before me!" Goes Ao Kuang

This is my favorite ultimate as you literally cannot miss unless you get KS'd, body blocked, or if the enemy uses Greater Purification.
This can turn the tide in a battle, because this ultimate is great for cleanup, as you can easily get a PENTA kill if the time is right. You should max this WHENEVER YOU CAN

tl:dr
1. Dragon Call
2. Water Illusion
3. Max Wild Storm first
4. Level King of the Eastern Seas when you can
5. Max Dragon Call second
6. Max Water Illusion last

Combo - The only best combo

[->] [->] [->]

With this combo, you use Dragon Call before you use Water Illusion as you can still sneak in with your dragons active, and you won't have to waste time to summon them. This saves you precious time to kill them and gives them less of a chance to react. Once you're invisible and with your dragons surrounding you, get close enough to hit the enemy with Wild Storm. This'll insure that you did the most damage you could in the least amount of time. Finish the enemy off with the remaining dragons and execute the enemy with King of the Eastern Seas if you feel that you cannot finish the job properly.

Reasoning:

Dragon Call stays even if you use your one, so that another 2 seconds shaved off, getting you more time to slice them up.

Water Illusion would be used to engage and sneak behind them. Basically, become the chinese Loki. Make sure to tell your partner, or whoever, that you're going to gank them.

Wild Storm is when you finally attack them, and if you're behind them, they're usually going to go forward into your teammates or backwards into your Hastened Fatalis.

King of the Eastern Seas, this is your bread and butter, use it when the enemy has a blue x across their body, it's hard to miss. Use it to escape or to engage more, don't go early by clicking unless they're almost out of range of hitting them. By waiting, you can charge your Wild Storm and get their health lowered even more and hopefully you'll get a double kill.

Equipment

Equipment, this is what you came here to see.

Items

Shoes of the Magi provides movement speed which is critical to rotate fast. The power and mana it gives is also a bonus, so that's only a benefit to you. This MUST be your number one.
Telkhines Ring is your main basic damage dealer, combine this with at least level 3 Wild Storm, you can clear waves pretty easily. Against enemy gods, you will drive them away with your poke damage while also giving you defense against their attacks too (only if they're a magical god of course) Remember, making them retreat is still a victory, so you don't need to chase. This MUST be your number two.

I tried getting Demonic Grip as my third, but I found out that I couldn't stick onto the god I targeted and they usually got away. I recommend Hastened Fatalis third as you already have enough power from the last two to take them down, so now all you have to do is chase and stab away at their back. You could get Demonic Grip as your third, but I highly do not recommend that as, like I said, you can't stick onto them.
So you can chase them and stick on them, but you just don't have enough power! Demonic Grip'll lower their magical defense and also it gives you +60 power and faster attack too!

Winged Blade is for all the gods who slow you down to escape from you. It doesn't slow you anymore so you can chase and it gives you extra health and a cool down rate. The best part is, it's cheap to boot!
magi's blessing
Let's say you're chasing Scylla, she's so low, but she uses her Sic 'Em and it hits you and...wait, why aren't you rooted? Let me explain.
Magi's Blessing will take out any hard CC effect. I first discovered this is great against Ao Kuang as his ult counts as a hard CC, but I digress. This is very useful to chase, just as Winged Blade is for slows, Magi's Blessing is for hard CC. The extra protections and health don't hurt you either. It hurts the enemy though.

Actives:
Wrath of the Gods is always good, as you're the jungler, and you need to get in and out of camps fast.

Greater Blink is to engage and to escape. Thanatos can't get you now if you Water Illusion away and teleport away.

Greater Purification, period. What's there to say about it? I usually only get it for anti- Ares, but knock yourself out. Be mindful of who you're playing against though.

Greater Sprint, I usually don't get this, Hastened Fatalis is already enough for you, but if you feel like it, go ahead.

TL:DR
Get all of the equipment up there and in order. Actives usually are Wrath of the Gods and Greater Blink.

Summary

Ao Kuang is great 1v1, and due to this build, he can be viable in teamfights with the high hp the equipment offers. Although he can be in teamfights, he is usually the one to fall back first.

Quoted:
"Yeah, this is the build they use for Ao Kuang in ranked". -Friend of mine

On a second note, psychology is a good way to win the game. If you appear in front of a god 1v1 and if they fall back, that means you're doing a good job as an assassin.
If you have the most kills in the game, make sure you do not die, or die the least.
Confidence drives battles and if you, the tiebreaker dies, your team will usually mop up and die or retreat and die. The enemy will charge forward, taking care of the god killer and probably taking down a tower or two before you respawn. It can be hard to recover if you keep dying, but that's how you learn. Don't be afraid to die, but don't try to die. If you get what I mean.

Practice makes perfect, you'll know a good God when you feel relaxed and can do play the match without tensing up. You'll know how it feels the moment you feel it. If Ao Kuang isn't your god, try again or try another. It's a learning experience.

A mighty sword is your best friend soldier, god speed Ao Kuang!

Like for one, you don't have lifesteal, so you have to retreat back to base many times. The chase potential augments the escape potential though, so it shouldn't be a problem to escape. Another thing you have to do is realize that you can't kill as fast. You can still kill easy, no problem, but not as fast. You also can't take down tanks alone anymore, you need a teammate or two. There's a bit more, compared to full damage versus this build, but I can't think of them on the top of my head. I'm sure you'll figure out what I mean.

change in what ways?

Darkscare_13 | March 10, 2015 1:13pm
Yeah, I found out that I kept dying way too fast and too often due to stuns and slows. The build has a lot of chase potential, but that also means you have to change how you play somewhat or this build won't be used to it's full potential.

cool , will try out this build, i've started playin ao and really enjoy his play style but he is so squishy and vulnerable to cc, I like how you addressed his weaknesses especially about not needing to go overboard on power, thats what I always do

No problem, I just didn't know what you were doing.

My bad, this is my first guide, I didn't realize it would refresh. I just change a few words here and there and update it. Sorry about that.

Stuke99 (56) | March 9, 2015 2:10pm
Are you updating your guide when someone else dose so you keep yourself on the top of the list or what? Because when I updated my Sun Wukong guide I found your sitting on top, I see other people updating their guides and you're sitting on top again. When I decided to refresh my Ares guide a moment ago and checked on this site again there's your guide again on top. I checked your guide before I updated, and when you updated your guide again, it looked like you've changed nothing about it. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, I'm just asking why are you doing it when you've done no improvements to your guide.
