This is my first guide so plz dont hate!
This is the build that i found out best work's for my playstyle, so it might not fit yours!
also sorry for bad english!
Let's start of with the starter items.
the purple pot is a pretty standard start these days because it gives better clear early and more kill potential. add some mana and health pots for sustain.
Now for the rest of the items.
shoes of the magi is a standard item that gives you movement speed, power and penetration.
Polynomicon is an item that gives you lifesteal, power, mana and the passive on the item really helps you burst down an enemy.
Obsidian shard this item gives you 70 power and 33% magical penetration and is probably the best magical penetration item in the game.
soul reaver gives you 100 magical power and 300 mana, but the big thing here is the item's passive. it straight up deals 15% of their maximum hp as true damage, which really helps out your burst potential. btw the cooldown on the passive is 1 minute.
Rod of tahuti is a fairly standard item on mages, gives you power, mp5, and the passive simply increases your magical power by 25%.
Spear of desolation is an item that was introduced in season 3 that gives you 20 flat pen and 120 magical power, the passive can be extremely useful at times, the passive almost removes the cooldowns on water illusion, dragon call and wild storm
blink - this relic will allow you to instantly teleport a short distance if you are out of combat, i like this relic because it allows you to engage with it, so if it goes south, you can use water illusion to get out quickly.
purification & sanctuary - these are both defensive relics that can be used to get out of sticky situasions with.
sprint - can allow you to chase kills, and it can also be useful to help your team to either engage or disengage.
ao kuang's first ability is called water illusion. this ability is very useful to escape from a sticky situation. the ability will makes you unvisible for a limited amount of time(invisibility is cancelled if you take damage). you can press the ability key again to blow up the illusion you left behind when you used the ability. this will also cancell your invisibility.
ao kuang's second ability dragon call summons 6 dragons. For every successful basic attack , a dragon will dive to the target dealing additional damage. This ability ends after all dragons are used, or after 10s. you can activate this ability again to send forward the remaining dragons in a ranged attack. The dragons damage and slow the first enemy they hit.
he's third ability wild storm do damage in a cone in front of you. if your second ability is active a single dragon will dive upon each target hit, for additional damage.
ao kuang's ultimate ability King of the eastern seas allows you to execute a target below the health threshold and heal you for precentage of your max health (presentage depends on how many points you have put into the ability.
Pros
in teamfights you don't want to be the first one in, you will go in after the enemies have expended some abilities and burst down their backline, and if possible execute a one of their tankier targets.
that was my first smitefire guide, i hope it helps you, and feel free to leave some feed back ;)
thank you for reading!

First off, the build is not too bad, though I would highly recommend changing Spear of Magus for Obsidian Shard with its recent nerf. The reason is that Ao Kuang is purely a burst assassin. He has no time to set up shredding from Spear of Magus. It is better for him to get that straight % penetration off of his first ability.
Second, I would highly recommend changing the order you level your first 3 skills. It should be Dragon's Call > Wild Storm > Water Illusion (unless playing against very agressive start i.e. Isis + Awilix). Beyond level 3, Wild Storm > Dragon's Call > Water Illusion priority of course. The reasoning is that often the person clearing camps with you at the start have the aoe necessary to take care of the lesser minions, allowing you to do more focused damage on the fat minion in the camp. As long as you don't get greedy on mid camps, you should not really need water illusion until level 3.
Third, Pythagorem's Piece is not a great item for Ao Kuang. As stated before, he is purely a burst mage so he typically can't stay in a fight long enough for cooldown to matter. Same goes for lifesteal. The amount he will get to lifesteal will be nil. You are better off going with something that has more burst (Spear of Desolation), or grab Magi's Blessing to block CC which has saved me in countless fights (block panic ults, etc.).
Yes i agree that swapping spear of the magus with obsidian shard is the best option after the nerf. (i sort of forgot the fact that it was nerfed while i was making this xD)
on the other hand i don't like starting with dragon call due to the shorter cooldown on wildstorm that you can easily use it on both the back harpies and the mana buff when starting the game, you could go dragon call before water illusion for some more damage, but i just dont think it's worth it.
I don't think pythagorems piece is a bad item due to the new meta where the jungeler and the mid keep a lot together so if your mid is a mage (which is usually the case) it will help them out as well, and if your support is magical, it will help them thou most of them don't need the power, however if your support is a bacchus or an ares it will help.
and lastly the items you suggested. spear of desolation, worked. really well. I didnt reallly expiriment too much with it due to the high cost but it worked really well in later stages of the game. i will be putting that up there, however i really don't think magi's blessing is needed if you position yourself correctly.
