Introduction

Hey everyone! My name is Ninsaga and this is my first guide on SmiteFire. My main god is Anubis, and I think he is very underrated and underplayed. I hope people will see this guide and learn to play Anubis, making my favorite god more relevant.

Keep in mind, this guide if focused towards beginners. You may find a few advanced tips, but the main point of this guide it to teach players who have never tryed out Anubis before how to do well with him.

Another thing to note is that the above build is focused mainly on Conquest, as that is my main mode, but the build could still work for Arena with a bit of editing, and pretty much all the information throughout the guide will still be relevant if you are playing arena.

Class and Roles

Anubis is a ranged mage, thus he has extremely high burst damage, yet is generally squishy. He can be played effectively in multiple roles.

Middle Lane
This is the most common role you will see Anubis played in. He clears mid camps well, has great minion clear, and can be very effective when rotating out of lane. Overall, a great pick.

Solo Lane
Solo lane is a lane in which several mages can do well, and Anubis is no exception. With some penetration built he can deal with warriors very well, and he can deal with hunters as long as he uses his combo well and kills them quickly. However, because he cannot do insane damage to two people at once, the common ganks from the jungle may cause some problems. Not bad, but mid lane may be a better pick.
Jungle
Many mages struggle in the jungle, but not Anubis. He can clear jungle camps very quickly with his abilities, and can gank very well with his main combo. Not much more to say, overall, jungle is a pretty good choice.

As for all the other roles, Anubis is not going to do very well, thus it is better to stick with these three.

Pros and Cons

Here are a few of the pros and cons to playing Anubis.

Pros:

Extremely high burst damage

Has an easy to execute combo

Great minion and camp clear

Has a presence throughout all game phases
Cons:

Very squishy early game

Combo has several counters

Must be rooted for two of his abilities

Has no escape without actives

Abilities

Here you will find a brief description of each ability and how to use it.

Passive: Sorrow
Anubis's passive is pretty straight forward. It lowers protections of enemies near him, which makes it easier for him and his teammates to shred them down. It also increases the lifesteal of items, allowing him to lifesteal massive amounts of health once he is built up. The passive also lowers CC durations, which make the roots from Plague of Locusts and Death Gaze slightly less scary.

First Ability: Plague of Locusts
Anubis's first ability is called plague of locusts. This is normally the first ability you will level up, due to the fact that it can do some good damage to the opening camps. This will also be your main wave clear up until Grasping Hands gets built up enough to clear on its own. This ability will also be some of the main shred in your combo, which we will cover later.

Second Ability: Mummify
Anubis's second ability is called mummify. It is a simple stun that has a relatively long range. This ability is a relatively easy to hit skill shot, but be careful, because if you miss it your combo will be completely ineffective. This is also easily countered by Purification Beads, so if your opponent has them, try to make sure they are already used before using this ability.

Third Ability: Grasping Hands
Anubis's third ability is called grasping hands. This is a DOT(Damage Over Time) and slow AOE(Area Of Effect). Once you have it leveled up to rank 3, it will become your sole wave clear. This ability is an extremely effective wave clear, because you can place it from long range and leave the lane, knowing that the minion wave will be fully cleared. This is also one of the key parts of your main damaging combo, providing strong DOT and slowing the enemy down, making it harder for them to escape. Before it becomes very useful as clear, this ability can be used to damage the enemy under tower, or hurt them a bit if you are stuck behind your tower.

Ultimate: Death Gaze
Anubis's ultimate is called Death Gaze. This is an extremely long rage DOT skill shot. This ability is perfect for finishing of a god that is too far away for any of your other abilities, or killing them off after your combo is on cooldown. This ability is also great for stealing or securing objectives such as the gold fury or fire giant, and can even be used to deal tons of damage to the enemy titan.

Combos

In this section you will find Anubis's combos and how to use them.

If needed,

This is the general combo for Anubis. You would stun them with Mummify, quickly place Grasping Hands beneath their feet, run up and use Plague of Locusts to deal extra damage, and then finish them with Death Gaze if needed.
If you find you have trouble landing Mummify, you may wan't to cast Grasping Hands first to slow them down and them stun them with Mummify.

Items

In this section, you will see a description of each item in the build section at the start of the guide, and why you would need that item.

Standard Build

Shoes of Focus
These would normally be the first item you get on Anubis. They give him some power to get started, as well as a little bit of cooldown reduction and movment speed, all of which will help him have an easier early game.

Bancroft's Talon
This is the earliest lifesteal item you get on Anubis. It gives you more than enough lifesteal to get through the early game and most of the mid game, as well as giving you a good amount of power, which helps with lane clear and poke.

Obsidian Shard
This is the first item Anubis will get in the mid game. It gives you a good amount of penetration, which can help you deal with the warriors and guardians you will start facing in the mid game. It also gives you power to help your abilities deal even more damage.

Gem of Isolation
This items main purpose is to slow down enemies after the stun from Mummify ends. In the mid-late game, defenses will get built up, meaning people will be able to survive the combo longer. This item will ensure they still take a large amount of damage.

Pythagorem's Piece
This is a very powerful late game lifesteal item. It will allow you to sustain the massive damage coming from fully built hunters, other mages, and assassins. The passive will also help out other members of your team who can use it.

Rod of Tahuti
This is a pretty straightforward item. It gives you massive late game power, allowing you to shred anyone in your path. This is an extremely powerful item to finish off your build, yet it comes last due to its high cost.

Defensive Items

Breastplate of Valor
This is the item you should go with if you need some physical defense. It will help you survive against hunters, warriors, or assassins longer. It also has the added benefit of giving you some cool down reduction and mana. If you don't really need penetration, put it in the place of Obsidian Shard. If you do need pen, replace Pythagorem's Piece.

Void Stone
This is the item to get if you are in need of some magical defense. Magical defense is its main purpose, but it also gives you a good amount of power, and allows your whole team to do a bit more damage with its passive. If you need penetration to deal with tanky gods, replace Pythagorem's Piece. If not, replace Obsidian Shard.

Hide of the Urchin
This item is good for all around defense. If you are just loosing health a little too fast, or just wan't more sustain, go ahead and get this. Once again, replace Pythagorem's Piece if you need pen and Obsidian Shard if you don't.

Spirit Robe
This item is overall pretty similar to Hide of the Urchin, except its passive gives you damage mitigation after taking crowd control. Because of Anubis's passive, Sorrow, crowd control effects last a much shorter time than normal, which is why this item is a better choice to deal with CC than magi's blessingMagi's Blessing. Replace Pythagorem's Piece if you need pen and Obsidian Shard if you don't.

Other Optional Items

warlock's sash

Warlock's Sash
This is useful if you wan't to be tankier, yet still keep some power. It is important to stay in your lane a lot and keep farming, because getting it to max stats (100) is going to be the most effective way to use this item. If you decide to get it, it should be the first item you purchase, and the item to remove from your build should be either Pythagorem's Piece for pen or Obsidian Shard if you don't need pen.

Spear of the Magus
Spear of the Magus is another item that gives some pen, a bit of power, and it has a passive that lowers the opponents defenses, acting as pen but for the entire team. If you are facing extremely tanky gods, you may want to get this item. Paired with Obsidian Shard, you can mitigate most of your opponent's defenses and shred them much faster. Replace Pythagorem's Piece with this item.

Ethereal Staff
Ethereal Staff is an item you should get if you feel like you need to have a bit more health. This will give you more sustain, and allow you to take more damage without getting too low. Its passive also helps lower the power loss you will get by picking up this item. Replace Pythagorem's Piece if you need pen and Obsidian Shard if you don't need pen.

Divine Ruin
Divine Ruin is very similar to Pythagorem's Piece, the main difference being their passive. If you are facing a god with a lot of heal, such as Hel or Hercules, this item will help you kill them quicker, without them being able to heal up. Replace Pythagorem's Piece if you decide to pick up this item.

Actives

Combat Blink
Due to that fact that Anubis has not escape from his abilities, Combat Blink is almost a must. This active will allow him to escape situations if he gets stuck or gets out of position.

Greater Purification
This active will allow Anubis to quickly remove crowd control effects. If Anubis is stunned, rooted, silenced, or slowed and you believe it could result in a death, quickly use greater purification to escape.

Weakening Curse
This active will allow Anubis to combo and kill an opponent easier, or lower the entire enemy teams ability in a team fight. This should only be purchased if another active is not needed, however.

Shield of the Underworld
This active will allow you to mitigate a bit of damage if you are taking too much in a short amount of time. It will mainly be useful in the early laning phase, if an enemy mage is dealing too much damage too you.

Game Phases

In this section, we will cover what Anubis's role is in the different game phases.

Early Game
During the early game, Anubis's role is to remain in lane. You should clear the minion wave to gain gold and xp, and keep the enemy off your lanes tower, in order to keep control of the lane. If the opportunity is right, you should poke the enemy a bit with Grasping Hands or even go for the kill with your main combo if you can get off enough damage.

Mid Game
During the mid game, Anubis should start to get some more items online. Due to his great ganking potential, he should leave the lane and rotate frequently, trying to help secure kills in the lanes near him. As the mid game reaches its second half, team fights will start to break out. You should try to make it to nearly all of them to provide a lot of damage.

Late Game
During the late game, Anubis should focus on clearing waves to help push towers or defend your own towers, and deal massive damage during team fights. When the time comes to push something like the Fire Giant or the Titan, you can do a lot of damage to the objectives using Plague of Locusts and Death Gaze.

Team Fights

This chapter will explain what Anubis's role is in team fights.

When team fights start occuring, you should attempt to reach nearly all of them. His main role is going to be shredding enemies or stunning and slowing them for his team mates.

You can throw out Grasping Hands into the enemy team to deal a bit of damage and slow them.

If there is a specific target that needs to be locked down, use Mummify to stun them when they are in a good position for your team to attack, and then deal damage to them with Plague of Locusts, causing them to take massive damage from you and your team and hopefully killing them.

If an opponent gets low, but manages to escape behind a tower or behind teammates, you can use Death Gaze to deal long range damage and finish them off.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Anubis is an extremely powerful god that can use his abilities to quickly kill an enemy before they even know what hit them. While his main combo has a very serious counter, he can still time it right and keep good positioning to deal massive damage and secure multiple kills.

I just started playing and enjoying Anubis as I was trying out fun mages for Arena and whatever other gamemodes that were going on. As a beginner, it was very refreshing to learn that Anubis can be played in the solo lane, and I will give him a try once I start playing more Normal>Conquest games. On top of massive sustained damage, the spitting noise from Plague of Locusts is the best.

I very much enjoyed this guide. I used your offensive build for the longest time and secured a lot of kills with it, but here lately, I find myself wanting to make Anubis tankier. With all offensive items, Anubis is just so frail, and it can be hard out damaging the enemy.
