Explanation on usual build items

warlock's sash I usually go this item directly after Vampiric Shroud, as this item requires the largest number of stacks of any item in the entire game. While this item doesn't give much in the early game (50 initial magical power is relatively low compared to many 'proper' damage items, especially for an expensive 2650 gold item), when finished stacking, this item gives very big stats. not only 110 Magical Power, but also 600 Health and 400 Mana as well, increasing your survivability and sustain.
while Shoes of Focus is not bad, putting Shoes of Focus in the build above will make you have zero penetration until level 15, and power without penetration is inefficient.
This item gives huge amount of power as well. Full build with full stacks will result in a mana of 2355, and adding 3% mana conversion with base 100 power it adds up to more than 170! All of his damage have relatively low base damage but very high power scaling, so the power will give you even more damage than other mages would get.
This item is relatively inefficient in terms of player damage, as its 33% penetration doesn't have the best interaction with Demonic Grip's protection reduction. However, this percentage penetration applies to towers and phoenixes, and the section 4 of his clock will make your tower damage even larger. I've once hit phoenix for 547 damage with this item, destroying it in just 2 seconds. Note that you should only choose one of Spear of the Magus, Spear of Desolation and Obsidian Shard. Don't get more than one of them, but you should also not be getting none of them.
Attack Speed and Protection Reduction on Basic attacks, as well as a good bit of Magical Power. The reason for getting it as 5th item, later than most other builds on Chronos, is that his basic attacks won't do much damage until you get 3-4 items.
A must item for every mage, Chronos is not an exception.

Other items

This item gives no starting health, making your start more risky. While conditional 60 extra power helps your clear combined with your high scaling values, taking minion damage at early game will hurt even more as you have no health gain except for top section of your clock, which is a relatively small heal on a long cooldown.
This item is, as you all will know, all about early power. it gives 100 power plus passive, and a small amount of lifesteal as well. The reason I don't get this item often is the passive is, while good on paper, in the later stages of the game it is bad (or even negligible), as you won't be attacking enemies with 1/3 health. Also lifesteal doesn't give that much sustain even in the laning phase, and even less in the later teamfight phase where you will lose health much faster.
This item will give you a smaller amount of power, but another 75% of your magical power as additional damage on your next basic attack (which is easy to confirm with his 3) adds up as an even larger burst damage.
The cooldown reduction from this item will make you able to use your abilities more often, and the large mana regeneration (25 MP5 is equivalent of constantly having a mana buff) also helps you on using more abilities, as cooldown reduction alone will make your mana deplete faster.
If you want to get Shoes of Focus instead of Shoes of the Magi, you will have to get some form of penetration ( Obsidian Shard) as one of your first three items.
Its protection reduction passive was nerfed a while ago, making this item require 3 instead of 2 stacks and only doing flat reduction. While 30 protection reduction is far from a weak passive, getting full effect requires hitting all of his damaging abilities. One positive thing about this item is what this item gives does not result in a bad interaction (unlike Obsidian Shard, as percentage penetration and reductions will make each other less effective), so I go this item in cases where there is no high protection target or tanks aren't doing many things.
This item's point is to counter healers (such as Ra, Hel, Aphrodite) at the cost of worse item stats. The duration of 8 seconds makes it easy to apply long term healing debuffs to the healers, but as most of their heal is relatively small in the early game, you should get it after getting a few 'core' items.
120 Magical Power and 20 Magical Penetration, plus a passive that reduces the cooldown of every ability by 8 seconds. These are all given by this item. However, a major downside of this item, however, is that it has an extremely high cost (3800 gold, 85% more expensive than Obsidian Shard). Furthermore, while the amount of power is high, When Spear of the Magus' passive is applied the passive's protection reduction will actually outweigh the power difference, and Obsidian Shard's percentage penetration will be better against high protection targets. Personally I don't find this item's passive that strong, so I am still going Obsidian Shard as in the build above.
This item can give you an early advantage as this item gives large amount of power at low cost, but it carries the risk of stacks being removed upon death. This is essentially a much cheaper but worse version of Book of Thoth, as it gives everything Thoth gives but less. Comparing those two at full stacks, Thoth gives more power at 150-170 compared to Doom Orb's 140, more mana and MP5 at 875 mana + 15 MP5 compared to 200 mana + 7 MP5, and its stacks are also permanent.

Hey, nice guide.
But, i think you should take a bit more Protection, otherwise he is Quichy as hell.
Unless you have a solid build, just maybe take Rod of Tahuti a bit earlier.

But for the rest it is nice. ;)
